MAX H. COOKE
HIGH POINT - Max Hartsell Cooke, 71, of 1732 Mirabeau Court, died Thursday, January 21, 1999 at High Point Regional Hospital following surgery.
Max was born October 15, 1927, in Kannapolis, NC, the son of Herman Smith and Annie Overcash Cooke. He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill on a football scholarship where he received his Masters Degree. After graduation he was Physical Director and later Executive Director of the Gilvin Roth YMCA in Elkin, NC from 1949-1956. He then came to High Point as the director of the YMCA from 1956-1973. During that time he also founded and directed Camp Cheerio, for the High Point YMCA for ten years. He then took over as the Metropolitan Director of the Central Florida YMCA, in Orlando, FL, consisting of seven branches. He was then called to Raleigh, NC to develop Camp Oak Hill, a summer camp and Christian conference center. Camp Oak Hill was also the first established site for a week long summer camp for Asthmatic Youth in North Carolina.
Max retired in 1989. Throughout his life he was involved in various civic organizations such as the Gideons, Rotary Club, Y's Men's Club of High Point, and Women's Prison Ministry in Raleigh. Max and Helen spent their retirement traveling together to various places and enjoying their time together.
Max was always devoted to his faith and church and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in each area where he lived. He served as elder, Sunday School teacher, and was superintendent of Sunday School over the years. He also led various Bible study groups, and chaired many committees in service to his Lord and church. He was married to Helen Harris on December 22, 1947, who survives of the home.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Virginia "Ginger" Coley, and husband, Van, of Salisbury, Mrs. Amy Jacobs, and husband, John, of Four Oaks, two sons, Jeffrey Scott Cooke, and wife, Linda, of State Road, Kim Henderson Cooke and wife, Pamela, of Charlotte. Max was the proud grandfather of Jay Cooke "Cayce" Cooke, Adam Kapfhamer, Benjamin, Austin, and Zachary Jacobs. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Phyllis Mabry of York, SC, Mrs. Nancy Bleckley of Anderson, SC, Mrs. Gayle Sebastian of York, SC; and two brothers, Herman Cooke, Jr. of Kannapaolis, NC and Sidney B. Cooke of Concord, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack J. Cooke.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. R. Scott Woodmansee, and the Reverend Lisa M. Mullen. Visitation was held at Sechrest Funeral Service, E. Lexington Ave., Friday evening from 7-8:30. Entombment will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home until placed in the church thirty minutes before the funeral.

ELLIS FIELDS JR.
PINEHURST - Mr. James Ellis Fields, Jr., 79, died Thursday, January 21, 1999 at Manor Care Health services. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, January 23, from the Community Presbyterian Church with Dr. M. Bennett Bishop, III officiating. Burial will be privately held at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines.
Mr. Fields was born on June 6, 1919 in Pinehurst, a son of the late James Ellis, Sr. and Nellie Glaspool Fields. He was a Plumbing and Heating Contractor.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Corlee; three daughters, Janice Ross of Pinehurst, Joan Blalock of Greensboro, Jean Stimpson of Peachtree City, GA; six grandchildren, Natalie Wittmer of Southern Pines, Christina Ross and Melissa Ross, both of Pinehurst, Jennifer Blalock of Greensboro, Robert Stimpson of Colorado Springs, CO, Andrew Stimpson of Peachtree City, GA; sister, Helen Alexander of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Memorials may be made to the church of one's choice.

EDDIE GILCREAST SR.
RALEIGH - Eddie C. Gilcreast Sr., of 509 Glenwood Ave. Apt. 902, died Thursday. Funeral service 7 p.m. Sunday at Deliverance Cathedral of Love. Burial, 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Surviving: sons, Cleo Gilcreast of Ohio, Henry Gilcreast of Chicago and Eddie Gilcreast of Charlotte; sister, Queen Ester Gilcreast of Ft. Worth, Texas; 12 grandchildren.
Visitation at church 6:30-7 p.m. Sunday.

CAROLYN M. HALL
WILSON - Carolyn Morris Hall, 49, of 404 Hawthorne Lane, died Friday at her residence. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home, Wilson with a memorial service at 8 p.m. in funeral home chapel. Entombment service 11 a.m. Monday, Edgecombe Memorial Park, Tarboro.
She is survived by her husband, Donald E. Hall; two sons, Darren McKinney of Black Creek, Jason Earl Hall of Cary; two daughters, Darlene McKinney of Black Creek, Celena K. Hall of Lucama; one grandchild, Jade McKinney of Black Creek. She is also survived by her mother, Lucy Morris and two brothers, Donnie and Curtis Morris, all of Tarboro.

MARY W. MACOMSON
SHELBY - Mrs. Mary Wallace Macomson, 84, a homemaker and employee of H&R Block Tax Service, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 at White Oak Manor. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday, Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Dr. Dolores Queen officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 1:30-2 p.m. Sunday. Burial, Sunset Cemetery.
She was the daughter of the late James Y. Wallace Sr. and Mary Crews Wallace and the wife of the late Michael Rhett Macomson.
Surviving: sons, Michael R. Macomson Jr. of Shelby, Dr. James B. Macomson of Gastonia, Dr. Robert E. Macomson of Charlotte; daughter, Rebecca M. White of Shelby; brother, James Wallace of Lake Lure; sisters, Sarah Kendrick, Barbara Tabbott, Carolyn Kreuzer and Marjorie Poteat, all of Spartanburg, SC, Elizabeth Ritchie of Greenville, SC, Martha Nelson of Clinton, SC.; five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Alma McRae, Edna Martin and Frances Metz.
The family will receive friends 7:30-9 p.m. Saturday, Clay-Barnette Funeral Home other times at the home, 910 W. Marion St., Shelby.

JAMES EDWARD MARINO SR.
APEX - James Edward Marino Sr., 79, a retired corrections officer with The Federal Government, died Thursday morning following a lengthy illness. He was a WW II Army veteran. A Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 1999 in St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church in Apex. Burial will be in the Apex Cemetery.
Mr. Marino was pre-deceased by his wife, Louise Claps Marino in 1990, and his son, James E. Marino Jr. in 1995.
Surviving: daughters, Joyce Marino Austin and husband, Bob of Apex, Janice Rocco of Old Bridge, NJ, Karen Marino Boykin and husband, Terry of Moncure; son, Richard Trippiedi and wife, Patricia of Oxford, NY; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 at the Apex Funeral Home, 511 W. Williams St. (Hwy. 55) in Apex.

MAUDIE H. McGEE
AUG. 8, 1922 - JAN. 22, 1999
ANGIER - Maudie Honeycutt McGee, 76, of 3867 Old Fairground Road, died Friday. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial, Devotional Gardens, Dunn.
Surviving: husband, Harold Bledsoe McGee; sons, Gary McGee of Hickory, Ray McGee of Garner, Ken McGee of Benson; grandchildren, Keri McGee, Scott McGee, Jeffrey McGee, Amber McGee, Lauren McGee, Mackenzie McGee and Madison McGee; sisters, Edna H. McLamb and Pauline H. Jones, both of Angier; brothers, Leonard Honeycutt of Benson and Clarence Honeycutt of Angier.
The family will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, 7-9 p.m. today and other times at the home.

JOHN C. OVERMAN JR.
APEX - John C. Overman Jr., 76, of 8905 Tody Goodwin Rd., Apex, died at Duke Hospital, Jan. 20, 1999. Mr. Overman was a retired farmer and dairyman, a member of Olive Chapel Baptist Church. A WWII veteran and member of the American Legion and The Disabled American Veterans Association. Mr. Overman was a native of Middlesex in Nash Co. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 in the Olive Chapel Baptist Church by Dr. Mark Crumpler Pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors: wife, Doris Goodwin Overman; daughter, Kay Taylor and husband, David of Yokosuka, Naval Base, Japan; mother, Maude E. Overman of Wilson; brother, Joe Overman and wife, Florence of Middlesex; sisters, Virginia Greene and husband, Ray of Deep Gap, Pauline Morgan and husband, Lewis of Richmond, VA, Frances Hester and husband, David of Wilson; grandchildren, Captain David Taylor of Fort Benning, GA, John K. Taylor of Raleigh.
Memorials may be given to the Olive Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, 600 New Hill-Olive Chapel Rd., Apex, NC 27502.

JULIA G. PAINTER
GREENVILLE - Mrs. Julia Gaylord Painter, 82, died Friday, January 22, 1999. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at First Christian Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Col. (Ret.) Dean E. Painter Sr.; sons, Dean E. Painter Jr. and wife, Wendy of Raleigh; and Michael Painter and wife, Rhonda of Blanco, Texas; daughter, Mollie Painter Raab of Woodside, California; grandchildren, Jim Painter and fiance', Gordon Mattocks, both of Charlotte, NC; Michael Painter of New York City, New York; Nicholas Painter, Zachary Painter, and Peyton Painter all of Blanco, Texas; Dean Raab and Julia Raab of Woodside, California; brothers, Louis W. Gaylord Jr. and Richard Gaylord, both of Greenville; sisters, Mattie Moye Hagerty and Virginia Scales, both of Greenville; and Harriet Whitehurst of Durham.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Saturday and at other times at the home. They have suggested that anyone desiring to make a memorial contribution consider The First Christian Church, 520 Greenville Blvd. SE, Greenville, NC 27858.

REBECCA K. PITTMAN
RALEIGH - Rebecca Kelly Pittman, 64, of Raleigh, died suddenly Monday, January 18, 1999. Miss Pittman was born in Cumberland County to the late James Rowland and Lottie Johnson Pittman. Miss Pittman was a State Government Retiree.
Two brothers, James Roland Pittman Jr. and Joseph Edward Pittman preceded Miss Pittman in death.
Funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington St. The family will greet friends from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The burial will be private at LaFayette Memorial Gardens, Fayetteville.
Surviving: sister, Margaret "Peggy" Shook of Mars Hill; brother, Robert A. Pittman of Fayetteville; 13 nieces and nephews.

ARRIE M. VERNON
MILTON - Mrs. Arrie Mittie Vernon, 74, of 277 Sunset Dr., died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center. Born in Bertie County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Arrie Minnie Congleton. Mrs. Vernon was a teacher's assistant with the Caswell County Public School system for more than 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wrenton Vernon and grandson, Rodney Vernon.
Mrs. Vernon is survived by sons, Randy E. Vernon of Danville, VA, Robert L. Vernon of Reidsville, Ricky J. and Rodger W. Vernon, both of Milton; sister, Ethel C. Lassiter of Colerain; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Semora Baptist church, of which she was a member, by Pastor Joe Grubbs. Burial to be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home, Roxboro.
Memorials may be made to Semora Baptist Church Building Fund.

CHRISTINE FRANKS FOWLER
RALEIGH - Christine Franks Fowler, 76, of 6912 Penny Rd., died Tuesday at Rex Hospital. She was the retired president of MHF Corporation.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maylon H. Fowler and her brother, Walter Ray Franks.
Funeral 11 a.m. today, Catawba Springs Christian Church. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
She is survived by sons, Steve W. Fowler and wife, Beth of Cary, Robert H. Fowler of Raleigh, Dennis L. Fowler and wife, Saralyn of Raleigh, Ronnie W. Fowler and Ricky E. Fowler, both of Cary; three grandchildren, Maylon-James and Bobby Fowler, Hannah Fowler; brothers, Sherwood Franks, Cary Franks, Paul Franks and Earl Franks; sister, Pauline Franks.
A special thanks to all friends and family and her special nieces and nephews for the attention and love given to her in time of sickness, especially her special friend, Grace Mills.

MRS. ROBERT H. "JOHNNIE" UPTON JR.
RALEIGH - Mrs. Robert H. "Johnnie" Upton Jr., 93, died Thursday at a Raleigh nursing home.
Mrs. Upton was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. J.W. McLean of Godwin.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in music education. She was an accomplished pianist. For a number of years she provided musical accompaniment for her home church, Godwin Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Upton lived for 27 years in Atlantic City, NJ, where she and her family moved in 1937. She returned to North Carolina in 1963 following the death of her husband.
She is survived by two sons, Robert M. Upton of Raleigh; John Charles Upton of LaJolla, CA; one daughter, Mrs. Robert H. Wilson of Shrewsbury, NJ; a brother, Dr. James W. McLean of Fayetteville; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service is scheduled at Cross Creek Cemetery, Fayetteville, at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Billy Herring of Dunn will conduct the service.
The family requests no flowers.
Memorials may be made to the Children's Home at Barium Springs, Red Springs, N.C. 28377.
