THOMAS HOLLAND WOODARD
GARNER - Thomas Holland Woodard, 78, of Fairfax, VA, and formerly of Garner, NC died Wednesday, April 7, 1999. Mr. Woodard was born in Selma, NC to the late Ernest V. and Effie Holland Woodard. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lanie Gunter Woodard. Mr. Woodard was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College. Prior to his retirement in 1981, Mr. Woodard was a chemist for US Dept. of the Interior Geological Survey. Mr. Woodard served in the US Army during WWII and was a life long musician.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh. Burial will follow in the Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
Surviving are his two daughters, Linda Tatum and husband W. Barnes Tatum of Greensboro, NC and Sallie Dail Tiso and husband Bruce Tiso of Burke, VA; brother-in-law, Hardin Gunter of Durham, NC; four grandsons, Chris Wilson, Hal Wilson, Ben Tiso, and Tom Tiso.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to the Burke United Methodist Church, 6200 Burke Centre Parkway, Burke, VA 22015.

WADE C. (CHIP) LEWIS III
Sept. 11, 1947 - Jan. 21, 1999
RALEIGH - Chip Lewis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wade C. Lewis, Jr., died from a massive heart attack, while in Cincinnati, Ohio on business.
He is survived by his wife, Wylene; his son, Christopher, director of Camp Cheerio in N.C.; and his daughter, Sara, a junior at Indiana University. Their home is in Elkhart, Indiana, where Chip was employed by Goshen Rubber Company, as Vice President of Human Resources. His brother, Dale who has spent most of his adult life in the bush country of Zambia, Africa, is on the staff of N.Y. Zoological Society, serving as a wildlife conservationist.
Chip began the game of golf at age seven, after a bout with Polio. As the years rolled by he continued his love of the game making a name for himself in junior golf tournaments played throughout the southeastern states. He played on Broughton High golf team, and later entered Wake Forest University on a golf scholarship. While still an amateur he played in the U.S. Open and followed that by turning professional. His first job as a pro did little to stimulate his long-term interest in golf, and after a few short years he gave up his professional status and finally regained his amateur standing.
Other survivors include Mr. and Mrs. Edwin E. Flythe, and their son, Skip, who, on numerous occasions played with Chip when participating in member-guest tournaments at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh, N.C. Also, Walter F. Lewis of Topsail, N.C. and Walter F. Lewis, Jr. of Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held at St. Michaels Episcopal Church on Wednesday, January 27, 1999 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Y.M.C.A. Camp Cheerio-Lewis Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 6258, High Point, N.C. 27262 or Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27605

RICHARD H. BEHRMAN
HILLSBOROUGH - Richard H. Behrman, 71, died Thursday morning at the Triangle Hospice in Hillsborough.
Mr. Behrman grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y. and served in the Navy during World War II. He retired from the Liggett Group as corporate director of marketing. He taught at Meredith College and was associate professor in the Business Department. He was also the Director of the M.B.A. Program at Elon College and retired as the Interim Dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business at Elon.
Mr. Behrman is survived by his wife, Mary of Chapel Hill; his three daughters, Barbara Dan of Omaha, Neb.; Margaret Payne of Greensboro; and Dorothea Hyde of Cincinnati, Ohio, and five grandchildren.
Mr. Behrman was and elder at the University Presbyterian Church, Chapel Hill, and a family memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Richard H. Behrman of Duke Melanoma Research; Box 3828; DUMC; Durham, N.C. 27710.
Arrangements for the Behrman family are being handled by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Inc., Raleigh.

JOSEPH R. BYRD
Apr. 21, 1919 - Jan. 22, 1999
GARNER - Joseph Rebon Byrd, 79, formerly of Clayton, died Friday at the VA. Hospital in Salisbury.
Graveside service, 2 p.m. Monday at Montlawn Memorial Park by Dr. James R. Bousman.
Surviving: daughters, Joyce B. Crowder of Clayton and Judy B. McLamb of Wendell; sons, Jerry Byrd of Knightdale and Johnny Byrd of Smithfield; sister, Betty Zora Cowing of Raleigh; brothers, Judd Byrd of Matchey, Ms and G.L. Byrd of Raleigh; 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, 7-9 p.m. today and at other times at the home of Mrs. Betty Cowing, 8100 Old Baucom Road, Raleigh.

VIRGINIA S. CURRIN
FUQUAY-VARINA - Virginia Senter Currin, 79, a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, died Saturday, January 23, 1999.
Funeral service 11 a.m., Monday, January 25, at the Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church. Burial, Harnett Memorial Park.
Mrs. Currin was a retired Harnett County School teacher; a lifelong member, Sunday school teacher and organist at Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church; WMU association director for several years, a Harnett County Guardian Ad Litem, and an avid collector and traveler.
She is survived by her husband, Billy Ray Currin; daughter, Candy Taylor of Clinton; son, William S. Currin of Chalybeate Springs; son-in-law, Cary B. Taylor III; daughter-in-law, Stella H. Currin; grandchildren, Jess and Georgia Howard, Senter and Grayson Currin; brothers, John Aaron Senter of Lillington, Dr. W.J. Senter of Raleigh, and Grayson Senter of Fuquay-Varina.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Sunday, January 24, 1999, at Thomas Funeral Home in Fuquay-Varina; other times at the home of Bill Currin, 3531 Chalybeate Springs Road, Fuquay-Varina.

DOROTHY L. DICUS
FUQUAY-VARINA - Dorothy Liles Dicus, 74, died at her home in Fuquay-Varina, NC on Friday, January 22, 1999.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 25, at Avent Ferry United Methodist Church with Rev. Bryan Faggart and Rev. Denise Thorpe officiating. Burial will be private at Montlawn Memorial Park.
Mrs. Dicus was the daughter of the late Thomas Ernest and Mary Brigman Liles of Bennettsville, SC. She graduated from Marboro Business College. She was a member of the Carteret Street United Methodist Church, Beaufort, SC and the Hope McLeod Foster United Methodist Church Women's Circle. Mrs. Dicus was an accomplished bridge player and a member of the American Contract Bridge League. Mrs. Dicus was an avid volunteer with the Beaufort Memorial Hospital and various other causes through the Marine Corps Officers' Wives Association.
Surviving are her husband, Col. William Anderson Dicus, Jr. of Fuquay-Varina, NC; children, Martha Browning Dicus of Charleston, SC, Mary Woodley Dicus of Raleigh, NC, and William Anderson Dicus, III and family of Boone, NC; sisters, Frances L. Liles of Raleigh, NC, Mrs. Grady Hubbard of McColl, SC, and Mrs. Tillie Liles Hagan of North Myrtle Beach, SC; brothers, Rev. Thomas Liles, Jr. of Surfside Beach, SC and Robert Liles of Bennettsville, SC.
Memorials may be made to the Carteret St. United Methodist Church, Carteret St., Beaufort, SC 29901 or the Avent Ferry United Methodist Church, 2700 Avent Ferry Rd., Raleigh, NC 27606.

JANICE EVANS
WILSON - Janice Evans, 61, died Saturday.
Funeral, today, 3 p.m. Evans Family Cemetery, Scott's Church Rd., Lucama.
Surviving: sisters, Joyce Lamm and Thelma Mercer of Wilson, Willowpean Pennington of Knightdale, Margie Johnson of Hagerstown, Md.; brothers, Roland Evans of Wilson and Rudolph Evans of Micro.
The family will be at Thomas-Yelverton, today, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the Janice Evans Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 3932, Wilson, NC 27895.

DORIS E. GODWIN
RALEIGH - Doris E. Godwin, 76, of Raleigh, died Thursday, January 21, 1999. Mrs. Godwin was born in Durham County, the daughter of Alexander and Mollie Emory.
Mrs. Godwin was predeceased by her husband, William Lee Godwin, Jr.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 25, 1999 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Cary, NC.
Surviving are her son, Johnnie L. Godwin; daughter, Billie J. Hanrahan; brother, Bill Emory; sister, Mary James; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC.

CHARLES H. "CHARLIE" GOODWIN SR.
MOUNTAIN HOME - Charles Howard "Charlie" Goodwin, Sr., 59, of Mountain Home, passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 22, 1999, at Park Ridge Hospital. He was a native of Chatham County, North Carolina and was the son of the late Charles and Korlie Wilson Goodwin. He had been a resident of Henderson County for the past 24 years. He was the former operator and manager of Pisgah View Rest Home for nine years before his retirement in 1991 from Cardinal Care Center. He was a Sergeant for eight years in the North Carolina National Guard serving as a medic. He attended the Asheville Seventh Day Adventist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Wendy Goodwin. He was the proud father of three boys, Chuck Goodwin and Tony Edward Goodwin, both of Mountain Home, and Randy Lee Goodwin of Asheville; three sisters, Elizabeth Holland and her husband Odis of New Hill, North Carolina, Marie Stone and her husband Odell of Tallahassee, Florida, and Faye Holland and her husband Cary of New Hill, North Carolina; one grandchild, Emilie "Hope" Goodwin of Asheville, and several nieces and nephews.
Charlie always brought laughter, humor and joy to all whom he had contact with. He was a best friend to all. His family is so proud of him. He will be greatly missed.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery in Morganton, North Carolina. Elder James Wolter will officiate. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday evening at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors.

MARY MABEL CAMPSEN GRUBBS
CARY - Mary Mabel Campsen Grubbs, 103, of Raleigh, died Friday, January 22, 1999.
Mrs. Grubbs was a native of Newberry, South Carolina.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 25, 1999 at Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are her brother, Otto Campsen of Destin, Fla.; niece, Thelma Williams; nephew, Alfred Campsen, both of Spartanburg, S.C.; granddaughter, Anne Workman of Cary; and great-grandchildren.

CAROLYN M. HALL
WILSON - Carolyn Morris Hall, 49, of 404 Hawthorne Lane, died Friday at her residence. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Home, Wilson with a memorial service at 8 p.m. in funeral home chapel. Entombment service 11 a.m. Monday, Edgecombe Memorial Park, Tarboro.
Arrangements by Montlawn Funeral Home, Raleigh.

LYNWOOD EARL HOLTON
KNIGHTDALE - Lynwood Earl Holton, died Saturday, January 23, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. Mr. Holton was a retired self-employed builders.
Graveside service 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 1999 at Raleigh Memorial Park.
Surviving: son, Barry L. Dellinger-Holton and his wife, Janis Dellinger-Holton of Raleigh; daughter, Jan H. Richardson and her husband, Dannie Richardson of Wendell; grandchildren, Meredith Lynn Richardson, Hillary Elyse Holton; sister, Ethel H. Doyle of Irvine, California and her children, Ann D. Stephens, Edward Doyle and Steven Doyle.
The family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday evening January 26, 1999 from 7-8 p.m. at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Wake County Unit, 620 W. Morgan Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.

JAMES LOUIS HUGGINS
JACKSONVILLE, NC - James Louis Huggins Jr., 50, of Jacksonville, died January 21, at his home.
Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home chapel in Jacksonville, with the Rev. Jim Kelley officiating. A private burial will be held at Costal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Mr. Huggins was a veteran of the US Army.
Survivors include his parents, James L. and Nancy Dillon Huggins of Wilmington; a sister, Rebecca Huggins Getsinger of Florence, SC; a brother, Robert E. Dillon Jr. of Wilmington; an aunt, Ione Brand of Little Rock, SC; two nephews, David Melvin of Nashville and Luke Melvin of Maysville; a great-niece, Alyssa Melvin of Maysville.

JOSEPH D. HUGHES
FARMVILLE - Mr. Joseph Denver Hughes, 79, of Route 1, died Saturday morning following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Taylor-Edwards Funeral Home in Snow Hill. Burial will follow in the Snow Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Hughes was a member of Liberty Advent Christian Church, had served in the United States Army during WWII, was Past Commander of the VFW Post in Farmville and had served on the Greene County Board of Education.
Survivors include: daughters, Jean Nicolaus of Louisville, KY and Linda Payne of Winston-Salem; sons, J. D. Hughes of Benson, Robert Hughes of the Ormondsville Community and George Hughes of Farmville; sisters, Lila Little of Farmville and Ada Canney of McClean, VA; a brother, Julius Hughes of Farmville; eight grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Robert and Jackie Hughes in the Ormondsville Community.
