BOBBIE M. LEWIS
ROCKINGHAM - Mrs. Bobbie Medlin Lewis, 83, of 128 Cumberland Circle, died Saturday in the Richmond Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Lewis was born in Franklin County, NC, October 7, 1915, daughter of the late Eli and Ludie Green Medlin. She taught in the Richmond County School System for many years.
Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. G. Carl Lewis, who was the Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Rockingham for many years.
In addition to her many community and church activities, Mrs. Lewis also served as a Trustee of Wake Forest University.
Funeral services are set for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church with the Revs. David Jordan and Scott Turner officiating. Entombment will be in the Richmond County Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday evening at Marks Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by her son George and his wife Peggy Lewis of Southern Pines; daughter Mary and her husband David Lukov of Rockingham; four grandchildren, Judd and Heather Lewis of Southern Pines and Brett and Megan Lukov of Rockingham.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Richmond County, 230 South Lawrence St., Rockingham, or the First Baptist Church, 201 North Randolph Street, Rockingham, NC .

KATIE P. OVERMAN
ROANOKE RAPIDS - Katie Elizabeth Pierce Overman, 86, of 519 Vance St., died Saturday, January 23, 1999 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.
She was born November 5, 1912 in Sunbury, NC, the daughter of Willie Benton and Charles Herbert Pierce and was educated in Gates County Schools. She attended Elon College on a scholarship, graduating with a double major in English and French and a minor in music. She taught in the Elizabeth City Schools for several years until her marriage to William Henry Overman, then superintendent of Gates County Schools. The Overmans moved to Roanoke Rapids in 1947 when he became superintendent of the Halifax County system, serving in that capacity for 27 years. Mrs. Overman continued as homemaker, teacher, and community volunteer in Roanoke Rapids until her death. Her community service included serving as a board member at The Union Mission, as a volunteer with Meals On Wheels, and as a long-time member at the Halifax Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. She also served as a planner for the Halifax Technical Institute, now Halifax Community College. She was the first teacher of English as a second language at the College, working with the earliest Vietnamese immigrants to our area. As a member of Rosemary Baptist Church for 50 years, her special interest was serving as a volunteer assisting those less fortunate. She will be remembered by her close network of friends all of whom contributed to the quality of her life during the last years. Her family expresses its sincere gratitude to each of them.
She is preceded in death by her husband William Henry Overman and her son-in-law William Lawson Brady, III.
She is survived by her children: Kay Overman Ferrell of Irvine, California, Dr. William Henry Overman, Jr. and wife Pierce of Wilmington, NC, and Mary Overman Brady of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Will and Patrick Ferrell, Katie Carter Sutton, and Sarah Lawson Brady; and one great-grandchild, Carter Russell Sutton.
The service will be at 3 p.m. on Monday, January 25, at Rosemary Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at Branch Funeral Home From 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, 1999.
In lieu of flowers, her request is that donations be made to the Roanoke Rapids Public Library and The Union Mission.

JULIA G. PAINTER
GREENVILLE - Mrs. Julia Gaylord Painter, 82, died Friday, January 22, 1999. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at First Christian Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Col. (Ret.) Dean E. Painter Sr.; sons, Dean E. Painter Jr. and wife, Wendy of Raleigh; and Michael Painter and wife, Rhonda of Blanco, Texas; daughter, Mollie Painter Raab of Woodside, California; grandchildren, Jill Painter and fiance', Gordon Mattocks, both of Charlotte, NC; Michael Painter of New York City, New York; Nicholas Painter, Zachary Painter, and Peyton Painter all of Blanco, Texas; Dean Raab and Julia Raab of Woodside, California; brothers, Louis W. Gaylord Jr. and Richard Gaylord, both of Greenville; sisters, Mattie Moye Hagerty and Virginia Scales, both of Greenville; and Harriet Whitehurst of Durham.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Saturday and at other times at the home. They have suggested that anyone desiring to make a memorial contribution consider The First Christian Church, 520 Greenville Blvd. SE, Greenville, NC 27858.

MARJORIE RICHARDS PULLEY
ROLESVILLE - Marjorie Richards Pulley, 91, of Rolesville, died Saturday, January 23, 1999 at Hillside Nursing Center.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 25, 1999 in the Rolesville Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Rolesville church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, W. Raymond Pulley; sons, Bill Pulley and wife, Jean of Wake Forest, Ted Pulley and wife, Mary of Roxboro; daughters, Lois Alford and husband, Ed of Rolesville, Lou (Lougenia) Weaver and husband, Tommy of Glouchester, Wanda Madden and husband, Butch of Raleigh; brother, Harold Richards of Youngsville; sister, Dorothy Pearce of Zebulon; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made in her name to Rolesville Baptist Church Building for the Future Fund, P.O. Box 185, Rolesville, NC 27571.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Bright Funeral Home; other times at the home of Lois Alford, 203 West Young St, Rolesville.

HOWARD M. SMITH
CHARLOTTE - Howard Manning Smith, 78, of Charlotte died at his residence on Friday, January 22, 1999. Mr. Smith was born April 10, 1920 in Apex, NC and was a member of the Swift Creek Baptist Church in Apex. He was a graduate of Apex High School, attended N.C. State University, taking courses in welding, served in the US Army in Europe during WW II, was plant manager for National Welders, retiring after 30 years, and later associated with Vincent Metals for eight years.
Surviving are his dearest friend, Nancy S. Schwaiger of Huntersville, NC; sons Howard Earl Smith of Baltimore, MD, and Larry Michael Smith of Charlotte; daughter, Audrey Ann Rowley of Charlotte; brother, Clarence E. Smith of Raleigh, NC; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McEwen Derita Chapel with the Rev. Bill Englebreth officiating. Interment, Sharon Memorial Park.
The family will receive family and friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

JUANITA S. STEPHENSON
CARY - Juanita Sanderford Stephenson, 87, beloved mother and grandmother of Cary, died at Cary health and Rehab on Friday, January 22, 1999.
Mrs. Stephenson was a longtime resident of Tryon Road, Cary, a member of Macedonia Baptist Church for 34 years, attending the Lillie Atkins Class.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Macedonia Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Etta S. and Dr. Odell C. Kimbrell of Raleigh; son, David W. Simpkins of Kipling; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Stephenson is preceded in death by her husband, W. Lacy Stephenson and son, Donald S. Simpkins.
The family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Cary.
Those considering memorial contributions may make them to Macedonia Baptist Church, 7100 Holly Springs Rd., Raleigh, NC 27606.

ETHEL C. STUCKEY
PRINCETON - Ethel Creech Stuckey, 84, died Saturday. She was the widow of Archie Leon Stuckey.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday at Parrish Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her sons Billy Harold Stuckey and Danny Ronald Stuckey both of Princeton, Charles "Duck" Stuckey of Pine Level and Norwood Wayne Stuckey of Lumberton; daughters, Betty Jean Collier of Chesapeake, VA and Nell Phelps of Selma; brother Herbert Carlton Creech of Monkton, MD; sister, Annie Crocker of Smithfield; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma.

RAYMOND A. THOMASSON SR.
MAY 14, 1942 - JAN. 23, 1999
GARNER - Raymond Alton Thomasson, Sr., 56, died Saturday after a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral service, 7:30 p.m. Monday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Private burial at Hollaway Family Cemetery in Durham.
Surviving: wife, Carol Lee Thomasson; six children, two step-children; mother, Ethel Thomasson; three brothers; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Thomasson of Durham.

E. CLYDE WOODRUFF
SMITHFIELD - Elton Clyde Woodruff, 74, died Friday.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in Carter's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church near Selma. Burial will be in Selma Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are: his wife, Jean Holt Woodruff; daughter, Joan Moser and her husband Randy of Brandon, FL; two brothers, Harold Woodruff of Greenville and Clifton Woodruff of Selma; sisters, Beatrice Bass, Betty Eason, and Kay Lamm, all of Selma and Imogene Wright of Wilson's Mills; and one step-grandson, Patrick Moser of Clayton.

LAWRENCE HUGHES BLACKWELL
OXFORD - Lawrence Hughes Blackwell, 70, of 108 Seaman St., died Friday, February 19, 1999 at Granville Medical Center.
A native of Oxford, son of the late Clifton M. and Lillian Hughes Blackwell. A graduate of Oxford High School, a veteran of the US Marine Corps, the plant superintendent of Southeastern Aromatic Turkish Tobacco Co., of Anderson, SC, and was affiliated with Clemson University in the research and development of Turkist Tobacco.
He was the former owner and operator of Blaco Machine, Welding and Product Co., of Oxford, and engineering consultant to Adams International in Ban Phai, Thailand.
He was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church where funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday by the Rev. Dr. Alan P. Swartz. Burial will follow in Hester Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Dianne B. and Vartan A. Davidian Jr. of Raleigh; brothers, James C. Blackwell of Henderson, Maurice R. Blackwell, Billie T. Blackwell, Bobby C. Blackwell, all of Oxford; sister, Mary Helen B. Parrott of Oxford; his grandson, Vartan A. Davidian III of Va. Beach, Va.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Fae Elizabeth Blackwell and one brother Ralph T. "Puddin" Blackwell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oxford United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 757, Oxford, N.C. 27565.

BILLY GLOVER
RALEIGH - Billy Glover, 61, of 1609 Shonnie Drive, died Saturday, February 20, 1999 at Rex Hospital. Mr. Glover had worked as a route saleman with Raleigh Linen, Flav-O-Rich and most recently with Krispy Kreme. Billy was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 23, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel. Burial, Bailey Town Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Lucille McKeel Glover; daughter, Kimberly Glover Brooks and her husband Robert L. Brooks of Knightdale; son, Ronnie William Glover and his wife Leslie Ellen Glover of Sumter, SC; grandchildren, Emily Michelle Brooks, Matthew Evan Brooks, Daisy Elaine Glover and Carolina Taylor Glover; brother, Bobby Glover of Bailey.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday, February 22, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home.

LEONARD RAY HAYWOOD
RALEIGH --Leonard Ray Haywood, 58, of 4141 Mangrove Drive, died Sunday, February 21, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital. Ray had retired, with 25 years of service, as an Office Machine Technician with Wachovia Bank.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 1999 at Rock Spring Baptist Church, 34 Rock Spring Church Road, Louisburg, NC. Inurnment following in the church cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Carolyn Haskins Haywood; daughters, Daphne "Dee" Haywood Holmes and her husband Dwight Holmes of Yigo, Guam and Darlene Haywood Troy and her husband Scott D. Troy of Wendell; grandchildren, Amanda Gayle Brewer, Cassandra Faye Holmes, Katie Elizabeth Holmes and Jonathan Ray Troy; father, Bernard Gerald Haywood of Raleigh; paternal grandmother, Estelle Ives of Danville, VA; and brothers, Danny Haywood of Garner, Steve Haywood of Fort, SC, Sonny Haywood of Montross, VA.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, February 22, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home.

BENNIE E. ALBRITTON
HOOKERTON - Mr. Bennie Earl Albritton, 66, died Saturday afternoon at his residence in Hookerton following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Albritton was a member of the Hookerton United Methodist Church, the Hookerton Masonic Lodge and prior to retirement served as the Plant Manager for A.C. Monk Tobacco Company in Farmville.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Taylor-Edwards Funeral Home in Snow Hill. Burial will follow in the Snow Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include: wife, Margaret McKeel Albritton of the home; a daughter, Cindy Albritton Guthery and husband, Paul of Raleigh; a grandson, Cameron Guthery of Raleigh; sisters, Daisy Vick of Snow Hill and Martha Ann Everett of Kinston; brothers, Richard Albritton and Arthur Albritton, both of Hookerton and Bob Albritton of Farmville.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

JOSEPH L. "LITTLE JOE" BAKER
SMITHFIELD - Joseph Lynn "Little Joe" Baker, 35, died Saturday.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Princeton. Burial will follow in the Baker's Chapel Church Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Debbie Stanley Baker; daughters, Samantha Jo Baker and Rebecca Ann Baker both of the home; parents, Joseph O. "Joe Boy" and Esther Capps Baker of Smithfield; and a brother, Doug Baker of Smithfield.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to an educational fund for Joe's daughters, c/o BB & T, P.O. Box 68, Princeton, NC 27569.
