MICHAEL McKINNEY
RALEIGH - Michael McKinney, 21, of 101 Maywood Avenue died at his home on Sunday, February 21, 1999.
He is survived by his mother Karen McKinney and his sister Alta Peters. A gathering in memory of Michael will be held Wednesday, February 24, 1999 10 a.m. at the Caraliegh Baptist Fellowship Hall, 118 summit Avenue in Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Michael McKinney Fund, c/o Paula Jackson, 5320 Burning Oak Court, Raleigh, NC 27606. The family would like to extend their love and gratitude to the MacNairs 4H Club for their help and support.

JOSEPH McMULLEN
SOUTHPORT - Joseph McMullen, age 30 of Southport, NC died Friday.
Surviving parents: Don and Carol McMullen of Roxboro, NC; brothers, Don McMullen, David McMullen, John McMullen, Richard McMullen; sisters, Anne McMullen, Laura Wilkins, Mary Smith; brothers-in-law, Nathan Wilkins, Jeff Smith; sisters-in-law, Angie McMullen, Margaret McMullen; six nieces and three nephews.
Funeral, 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary and Edwards Catholic Church, 611 N. Main Street, Roxboro, NC. Viewing one hour prior to service.
In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorial contributions be made to the church.

ANDREW "JOE" NORTH
RALEIGH - Andrew "Joe" North, 46, of 1726 Quail Hollow Dr. formerly of Kingston, NY, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999. He was born September 26, 1952, to the late Ronald and Delores Rathgaber North. He attended Kingston High School.
Mr. North was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves for 21 years, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 485th Regiment, 108th Division as a supply Sergeant. Prior to moving to Raleigh, he had been stationed with the 854th Engineer Company A at the U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. Dietz Center in Kingston, NY.
Prior to moving to Raleigh, he had been employed by Dyno-Nobel in Port Ewen, NY, and had been a driver for Kingston Kabs. He was presently working for Rea Construction in Raleigh.
Mr. North was a member of the Clinton Avenue United Methodist Church in Kingston, NY, and also a member of St. Andrews Men's Club and had helped at church functions at Clinton Avenue Methodist Church. He had been a member of the Kingston Indian Troop #12 Drum and Bugle Corp. Boy Scouts of America and had been active with Ulster County Civic Defense.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda S. Daugherty North, whom he married July 18, 1976; a daughter, Kimberly North of Raleigh; a son, Jason North of Raleigh; two sisters, Donna North Quick of Mt. Marion, NY, and Bonnie North of Saugerties, NY; a brother, Steven North of Hudson, NY; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces, nephews also survive. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Sharon Cogswell, and two brothers, Gary and Ronald North.
Funeral service will be held on Thurs. at 11 a.m. at the Clinton Avenue United Methodist Church, Kingston, NY. Rev. Arlene Dawber officiating. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC, at a time and date to be announced. Burial will be in Montrepose Cemetery, Kingston, NY, with full military honors.
Friends may call at Keyser Funeral Service, Kingston Chapel, 326 Albany Ave., Kingston, NY 12401, on Wed. from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605 or Rex Health Care Foundation, Hospice or Oncology Unit, Suite 316, 2500 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607.

MARGARET L. G. PATCHELL
RALEIGH - Margaret Lillington Graves Patchell, 84, died Sunday at Raleigh Community Hospital.
Mrs. Patchell was preceded in death by her husband, Burr Edward Patchell. She was the daughter of the late Felix Williamson Graves and Mary Williams Clark Graves and she was the grand niece of Chief Justice Walter Clark of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Mrs. Patchell was the owner of Patchell Enterprises.
Funeral service will be Wednesday at First Baptist Church-Raleigh at 1:00 p.m. with a visitation of friends and relatives to follow immediately at the church after the funeral service. Burial at 3:00 p.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park.
She is survived by a daughter; Mary Belle Patchell of Mebane; son and daughter-in-law, Edward Burr Patchell and Janet Patchell of Garner; grandchildren Jeanne Margaret Carbone, Monica Lynn Hunnicutt, Dora Jeneen Barbour and Martin Clark Patchell; great-grandchildren, Taylor Lynn Carbone, Christopher Matthew Carbone, Ryan Grey Hunnicutt, Russell Edward Hunnicutt, and Jessica Dora Barbour; brothers, Edward Thorne Graves of Alton, VA and William Griffin Graves II of Pawleys Island, SC; sisters, Mary G. "Cindy" King and Elizabeth Graves Spence both of Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to First Baptist Church, 99 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27603 or First Baptist Church Library of Mebane, 3rd & Jackson Street, Mebane, NC 27302.

MARGARET G. PULLEY
FINCASTLE, VA - Margaret Grace Garrison Pulley, 81, of Fincastle, died Saturday, February 20, 1999. She was a Lieutenant in the US Navy during WW II, retiring from the US Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC in 1975. Mrs. Pulley was preceded in death by her husband, Durwood Alex Pulley in 1972 and her daughter Cathryn P. Camper in 1998.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Garrison and Peter Dunn of Fincastle; sisters, Ethel G. Simon of Swoope and Emma G. Wrenn of Danville; cousin, Betty Bomar of Lynchburg; aunt, Rosa Gosney of Reidsville, NC.@obittext :Graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 24, 1999 at 1 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery in Clayton, North Carolina. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-9 p.m. at Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan (254-3000) and Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at McLaurin Funeral Home, Clayton, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 3512 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke, VA 24018.

REBECCA E. SCOTT
SNOW HILL - Mrs. Rebecca Elmore Scott, 93, formerly of Burlington, NC died at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, NC on Monday. Funeral service will be held graveside 10 a.m. Wednesday at Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, with the Reverend David R. Williams, Rector of the Church of Holy Comforter officiating.
Survivors are a son, Paul B. Scott, Jr. of Snow Hill; two grandchildren, Paul B. Scott III of Greenville and Adrienne S. Anderson of Boca Raton, FL.
The family will receive friends Tuesday at the home of Paul & Glenda Scott, 101 N. Greene St., Snow Hill, NC. Memorials may be made to the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.

BRUCE ALLEN SMITH
CHAPEL HILL - Bruce Allen Smith, 47, died at University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital on February 18, 1999 from complications of multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer which he fought valiantly for three years.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, February 24, 1999 at 4 p.m. at University Presbyterian Church on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, with a brief reception following the service in the church's Fellowship Hall. His ashes will be buried in a private family gathering prior to the memorial service.
He was raised in Michigan, the son of Curtis and the late Mary Smith of Pleasant Ridge, near Detroit. He is also survived by his wife of twenty-one years, Becky Castor Smith, formerly of Ann Arbor, Michigan, their children Allen (16) and Rachel (10) of Chapel Hill and his brother Nelson Smith of Ferndale, Michigan.
Bruce graduated from Albion College, in Michigan in 1974 and received his MS degree in Biology from the University of Michigan in 1976. Reichhold Chemicals employed him for over twenty years, first in Ferndale, Michigan, later in Jacksonville, Florida and for the past seven years in the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. He had numerous roles within the company both as a Technical Service manager and later as Director of Quality. He was thankful for the opportunity for meaningful work and was well enough to work full time until the day of his death. Bruce and his family appreciate the support Reichhold gave him during his illness, the bone marrow transplant he had in August 1996, and chemotherapy since.
Bruce enjoyed his hobbies of reading novels, seeing movies and candle-making as well as camping trips with his family. Before his illness he was an avid tennis player and was a former member of Hollow Rock Swim and Tennis Club. He will be remembered as a loving, involved father and husband. Bruce's competitive spirit at bridge and games was also reflected in his dedicated fight to withstand the effects of his disease. His strength of spirit and faith was inspiring to many. His family extends their thanks and appreciation to the staff who cared for him at UNC's Memorial Hospital and Hematology-Oncology clinic.
Contributions in memory of Bruce may be made to the International Myeloma Foundation, 2120 Stanley Hills Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90046 to further research for a multiple myeloma cure.

ROBERT PAUL TAYLOR JR.
ZEBULON - Robert Paul Taylor, Jr., 43, of 113 West Sycamore Street, died Monday, February 22, 1999.
Memorial service: 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 1999 at Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, 1300 Jones Street NE, Zebulon, NC 27597.
Surviving: mother, Jo Anne Gwynn Taylor of Zebulon; sister, Leta Gwynn Chesson of Wendell; maternal grandmother, Bertie Smith of Reidsville; niece, Kristina Toups.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1300 Jones Street, N.E., Zebulon, NC 27597.

DOUGLAS "DINK" WATSON
WENDELL - Douglas "Dink" Watson, 74, 1716 R.C. Watson Road, died Monday, February 22, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital. Mr. Watson was a retired farmer.
Funeral service 3 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 1999 at Bethany Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Alberta "Berty" Lucas Watson; daughter, Debbie Currin of Wendell; son, Doug Watson and his fiancee' Mandy Brown of Wendell; grandchildren, Jonathan Wayne Currin and Matthew Alan Currin.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, February 23, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, N.C. 27545 and other times at the home.

JAMES W. WILLARD
RALEIGH - James Walter Willard, 83, of 2205 Oxford Road, died Sunday. He was a retired employee of the State of N.C.
Surviving his wife, Reba Tutor Willard; a brother, Edward D. Willard of Oxford; three nieces.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street.

ERIN VIRGINIA HUFFMAN
JUNE 29, 1976 - FEB. 23, 1999
RALEIGH - Erin Virginia Huffman, 22, of Raleigh, died February 23, 1999.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home chapel in Cary.
Ms. Huffman is survived by her daughter, Savanna Cassidy of the home; mother, Margi Sewell and stepfather, George Sewell of Raleigh; father, D. Dennis Huffman Jr. of Charleston, W.Va.,; paternal grandfather, Denver D. Huffman Sr. of Charleston, W.Va.; brother, Nathan Huffman of Raleigh; aunt, Cyrena Burnside of North Hollywood, CA, and aunt and uncle Steve and Vicky Freeman of Cary; stepsisters, Stacy Lumpkin of Concord, and Haffye Sewell of Winston-Salem; first cousins, Justin Barker and Sarah Barker of Cary.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 7-9 p.m.

PATRICIA ANN LLOYD SCHULZ
RALEIGH - Patricia Ann "Pat" Lloyd Schulz, 58, of 5007 New Hope Road, formerly of Beech Mountain, NC and Ann Arbor, Michigan, died Tuesday, February 23, 1999 after a long courageous battle with cancer. A gifted musician, she was a church organist during her high school years. After earning a degree in Education from the University of Michigan, she taught nursery and several different grades of elementary school before opening a day-care business, which she operated while raising three children of her own. After moving to North Carolina, she explored her passion for cooking, eventually opening Donovan's Restaurant on Beech Mountain, NC. She returned to Raleigh in 1989 to pursue a career in real estate with her husband. She especially enjoyed the beach at Salter Path where she felt closest to God, during her final years. She touched all who knew her with her warm smile, sense of humor and gracious heart. When we see the beauty of a sunset, or feel the soft touch of a warm breeze, or hear the roar of the ocean surf, we'll remember her fondly and rejoice in the many blessings her life brought to us. Pat's family wishes to offer a special thanks to the cancer team at the University of Chapel Hill Medical Center and to the staff of Simonton Cancer Institute in Santa Barbara, California.
Graveside service 2 p.m. Friday, February 26, 1999 at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens, Wake Forest.
Surviving: husband of 35 years, Paul Henry Schulz, Jr.; sons, Paul Henry Schulz, III and partner Stephen Cronk of Minneapolis, MN, Scott Lloyd Schulz of Knightdale; daughter, Carrie S. Johnson and her husband, Len Johnson of Knightdale; grandchildren, Britney Linn Johnson, Hannah Cierra Schulz, Keelie Nicole Johnson; brother, Dr. Richard Alan Lloyd, and wife, Molly Lloyd of Fayetteville, AR; beloved English Shepherd, Lady Tags V and many other relatives, friends and pets.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service & Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home.

SUSAN HEATH ALLEN
RALEIGH - Susan Heath Allen, 70, died February 21, 1999 at her home. Susan was born in High Point and was a long time resident of Raleigh. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Susan was preceded in death by parents, James and Madge Heath.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Cary D. Allen; daughter, Betsy Williams and her husband, Rev. Samuel Williams of Burlington; daughter, Suzanne Armstrong and her husband, Robert L. Armstrong of Raleigh; four grandchildren.
The family received friends 10 a.m. Wednesday, 2/24/99 followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church.

JETTIE E. BATTON
BLADENBORO - Jettie Jean Evers Batton, 74, of 10179 NC HWY 131 South, Bladenboro, died Tuesday, February 23, 1999.
Mrs. Batton was a native of Bladen County, and was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Harrison Batton.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday from Center Road Baptist Church, Rev. J. Vernon Britt and Rev. Maurice Milligan will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lewis Cemetery.
Mrs. Batton is survived by four sons, Harry Vann Batton of Bladenboro, Bobby G. Batton of White Oak, Danny Gene Batton of Cary and Pete Batton of Bladenboro. She is also survived by one brother, Roy Evers of Bladenboro, and 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Center Road Baptist Church.
