RICHARD HOWARTH BENNETT
GOLDSBORO - Richard Howarth Bennett, 76, of 111 Hilldale Lane, died Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital. A native of Newark, NJ, he was the son of the late George Easman Bennett and Florence Mae Howarth Bennett. A graduate of Westside High School, he attended New York University and Rutgers University, leaving to enlist in the United States Army at the outbreak of World War II. During the war, Mr. Bennett rose to the rank of Warrant Officer Junior Grade. He was awarded the Bronze Star for valor in combat in Germany.
Following the war, Mr. Bennett attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 1949. After graduation, he began a career as a claims adjuster with Motors Insurance Company, moving to Goldsboro in November 1949. He later worked for General Adjustment Bureau, Seibels Bruce & Company, Gay & Tayor Company, and North Carolina Farm Bureau. From 1956 to 1976 he owned and operated the independent adjusting firm R.H. Bennett & Company. In 1962, Mr. Bennett co-founded and served as first president of the North Carolina Adjusters Association. He also served many terns on the NCAA board of Directors, and was longtime chairman of the NCAA Scholarship Committee. He served at various times as president of the Neuse Claims Association. He was also a member at Raleigh Claims Association.
Mr. Bennett was a charter member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church. He was also a longtime member of the Sunrise Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro and served as editor of their newsletter. He had also served as president of the Goldsboro Jaycees.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Madison Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Jeffrey Wisdom officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Staton Bennett: sons and daughters-in-law, Steven Richard Bennett and Harriett Bennett of Elm City, John Howarth Bennett and Helen Bennett of Raleigh; daughter and son-in-law, Julia Bennett Jagger and John Robert Jagger of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, James Richard Bennett and Elizabeth Carroll Bennett of Elm City, William Howarth Bennett and Andrew Edward Bennett of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends Thursday at Seymour Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Richard Bennett Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Maryhelen Wood, Executive Director of the North Carolina Adjusters Association, 7032 Tabor Lane, Charlotte, NC 28211 or to the Children's Home Society, Greensboro.

HOWARD B. BENTON
BENSON --Howard B. Benton, 88, of 507 W. Main St., died Tuesday at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Mr. Benton was born March 1, 1910, in Moore County, NC, to the late John B. and Minnie Fisher Benton. He was owner and operator of Benton Card Company in Benson, which printed Show Cards for theaters. He was very involved in his community, having served as Mayor of Benson and on the Johnston County Board of Commissioners. In 1994, Mr. Benton endowed the Benton Scholar Program at South Johnston High School which received national recognition for high school endowments. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a member of Banner Post #109 of the American Legion. He was married to the late Leta Johnson Benton who died in May of 1998.
Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Benson City Cemetery. His pastor, Rev. Kendell Cameron and Rev. Don Price will officiate.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Steve Cook of Benson; grandson, Ben Cook of Benson; sisters, Mildred B. Canaday of Benson and Joan B. Machmer of St. Joseph, MO.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to the Benton Endowment at SJHS; the Mary Duncan Public Library, the Benson Rescue Squad or the Benson Baptist Church.

JOHN C. "JOHNNIE" BETTS
SELMA - John C. "Johnnie" Betts, 87, died Wednesday. Funeral services will be held Friday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home. Burial will be in Selma Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are: his wife, Annie Ryals Betts; a son, James Stanley Betts of Chapel Hill; and a sister, Priscilla Hotho of Florida.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7-9 p.m. at Selma Baptist Church, 1500 N. Webb St., Selma, NC.

MRS. MAUD PATRICIA "PAT" LEE
DURHAM - Mrs. Maud Patricia "'Pat" Hartshorn Lee, wife of John Will Lee Jr., for 53 years and 10 months, died February 24, at Durham Regional Hospital following an extended illness.
A resident of Durham since 1945 and was employed with the Durham Police Department in communications until her retirement in 1987.
Mrs. Lee will be remembered for her dedicated service with the City of Durham and the many lives she touched with her warmth and laughter.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, John Will Lee III of Durham, and David C. Lee of Efland; two grandchildren, Yvonne Lee of Rougemont and John Will Lee IV, of Creedmoor; and one sister, Trudy Tomlinson of Mt. Clemes, Michigan.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Phil Wiggins officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers are representatives of the Durham Police Department, Fire Department and Communications Department. Serving will be, Franz Lunsford, Michael Dellinger, Jimmy Lively, Frank Edwards, Bobby Porter and Tom Fowler.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

JOSEPHINE B. BURWELL
OXFORD - Mrs. Josephine Babcock Burwell, age 96, died Wednesday, February 24, 1999 at Brantwood Nursing & Retirement Center. She is the daughter of the late Arthur L. and Susan Augusta Simpkins Babcock and the widow of the late Nathaniel D. Burwell. Mrs. Burwell was a native of Chase City, VA and a member of Oxford United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, February 26, 1999 at Oxford United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Alan P. Swartz and the Rev. Dr. James G. Arnold. Burial will follow inElmwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Burwell was preceded in death by a daughter, Joy Burwell Averett.
She is survived by daughters, Augusta Burwell Prince of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and Virginia Burwell Arnold of Cashiers, NC; sons, Nathaniel D. Burwell, Jr. of Clayton, NC, and Venable Babcock Burwell of Monroe, NC; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Oxford United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 757, Oxford, NC 27565.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford.

ANITA M. EGAN
CLINTON CORNERS, NY - Anita M. Egan, a resident of Clinton Corners, passed away, Tuesday, February 23, 1999, at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, NC. She was 80 years old.
Mrs. Egan lived in Clinton Corners for 45 years and was a member of Forever Young Club of Stanfordville and the Stanford Garden Club. A beautician and hairdresser Mrs. Egan was a former owner of Cinderella's Beauty Salon in Poughkeepsie and operated a beauty shop from her home in Clinton Corners.
She was born April 19, 1918 in Hamburg, Germany, the daughter of the late August and Ida Fellenberg Herrmann. On July 28, 1940 in the Bronx Mrs. Egan married John P. Egan, he survives at home in Clinton Corners.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Egan is survived by a daughter, Margaret A. Layton of Stanfordville; sons, John P. Egan, III of Stanfordville, Walter P. Egan of Holly Springs, NC; grandchildren, Robert J. Egan of Pompano Beach, FL, Michael P. Egan of Brooklyn, Stefanie Egan of Holly Springs, NC, Shaunna M. Egan of Holly Springs, NC; great-grandchild, Morgan Egan of Pompano Beach, FL; a great-grandchild soon to be born, and a sister, Helma Desser of Clinton Corners.
She was predeceased by one brother, Walter Herrmann.
Friends will gather in remembrance of Mrs. Egan Saturday, February 27th 1-2 p.m. at the Peck & Peck Funeral Home, S. Main St., Pine Plains.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Stanford Rescue Squad, Stanfordville, NY 12581.

MAXINE WITHAM HANSEN
RALEIGH - Maxine Witham Hansen 78, of Sunrise Assisted Living died Monday, February 22, at Rex Hospital.
Mrs. Hansen was born in Portland, Oregon on September 24, 1920. She graduated from Grant High School and earned her undergraduate and Masters degrees from Portland State University.
Surviving are her daughters, Carol Blankenhorn of Raleigh and Marsha Underhill of San Francisco; grandchildren, Kristin, Karl and Richard Blankenhorn all of Raleigh; stepmother, Marjorie Witham of Portland, Oregon; half-brother, David Witham of Portland, Oregon.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Millbrook United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

WILLIE FORESTER HARRISON
RALEIGH - Willie Forester Harrison, 89, died Feb. 23, 1999. Funeral service 1 p.m. Friday, William-Toney's Funeral Home Chapel, Spring Hope. Burial, Spring Hope Memorial Gardens.
Wake will be 12-1 p.m. Friday, prior to service at the chapel.
Surviving: daughters, Joyceteen Harrison of Akron, OH, Erma H. (Carl) Crews of Knightdale, Yutha Mae Harrison of Rocky Mount, Yvonne H. Green (Marvin) of Garner, Gloria Lucille Russell of Jamaica, NY; sons, William Harold Harrison (Barbara) of Washington, DC, Mervin Harrison of Rocky Mount; brothers, Robert Lee, Sylvester, Wiley and Lawrence Harrison, all of Rocky Mount; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Services by William-Toney's Funeral Home, Spring Hope.

PANSY BARKER HEDRICK
DURHAM - Pansy Barker Hedrick of 3528 Darwin Rd., died at home, Wednesday morning, February 24, 1999.
A Durham native, she was born September 25, 1929 to Mark Virgil and Iola Hall Barker. Mr. Hedrick was a 1951 graduate of Duke University. She worked briefly as a secretary at Duke Medical Center prior to raising her family, and in recent years, until 1993, was co-owner of "Images at South Square Mall. She was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church, the House & Garden Club, the Counterpoint Dance Club, the Durham Debutante Ball Society and Board of Visitors of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Pansy Hedrick faced her illness with extraordinary courage and optimism. Through her positive attitude, she was an inspiration to other cancer patients, offering them her gentle presence and gifts of counsel, encouragement and hope.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, James Taylor Hedrick; her children, Mary Sasser Hedrick Holloway of Durham, Martha Hedrick Newsom of Charlotte and James Taylor Hedrick Jr. of Charlotte; a brother, Mark V. Barker Jr. of Orlando, FL and sister, Katherine Barker Russell of Riverside, CA.
A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday in Maplewood Cemetery with the Rev. Haywood Holderness officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Campus Box 7295, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7295.

HERBERT CLINTON HUDSON
OCT. 21, 1914-FEB. 21, 1999
RALEIGH - Herbert Clinton Hudson, 84, of 1501 Chester Road, died on Sunday, February 21, 1999 after a long illness with Alzheimer's. Mr. Hudson was a longtime resident of Downey, CA where he worked and retired as an electrician. His entire life was one of loving husband and father, and horse lover.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sammie K. Hudson, and their two sons, Donald Billy Hudson of Reno, NV and his wife Beverly; their children, Rhonda Hudson of Los Angeles, CA and Heidi Hudson of San Francisco, CA., and Jack Brian Hudson and his wife Brenda Goodson, and ; their children Rachel and Ryan all of Raleigh, NC.
A memorial service will be held at Highland Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC on February 25, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jonathan Jeffries officiating. The family will receive friends on that day 12:30-6 p.m. at the family home at 1501 Chester Road, Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers, commemorations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 919 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 1000, Chicago, IL 60611-1676 (800) 272-3900 FREE.

NANCY J. KIGER
RALEIGH - Nancy Jane Kiger, 68, a retired AT&T operator, died on February 23 following a brief illness. She is survived by her mother, Eleanor Davis and stepfather, Howard Davis of Canton, OH. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Nancy was an active member of the Apex Church of Christ, The Young at Heart, and the Telephone Pioneers.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, February 26 at the Apex Church of Christ, 219 North Salem St., Apex, NC 27502.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

DOROTHY WOODARD KLEIN
KENLY - Dorothy W. Klein, 81, of 203 Alford Ave., died Tuesday. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Kenly United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Will Hoyle. Burial will follow in Kenly Cemetery.
Mrs. Klein was a member of Kenly United Methodist Church where she served as a lay speaker, church historian, member of United Methodist Women and in many offices of the church. Mrs. Klein was meteorologist with the Women's Army Corps 1943-1949. She taught at Kenly High School and Kenly Elementary School; was a merchant at W.R. Woodard Co. in Kenly; a former town commissioner.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law; Martha Dawn K. and Mayo E. Collier Jr. of Florence, SC; sisters; Sara Mae W. Jenkins of Raleigh; Louise W. Shepard of Wilmington; sister-in-law; Lois Woodard of Missouri; grandchildren; Kimberly C. Hammer of Atlanta; Eli Collier of Florence, SC, Peter Collier of Sumter, SC.
Visitation; Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Coley Funeral Home.

EVELYN B. LEGGETT
WASHINGTON - Mrs. Evelyn Brown Leggett, age 85, a resident of the Beaufort County Home and formerly of 3437 Gaulberry Road, Washington, died Tuesday afternoon February 23, 1999 at Beaufort County Hospital.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, February 25, 1999 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington conducted by Dr. John Ledford. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are: Felton Outland, Ed Outland, Carroll Glen Brown, D. Franklin Buck, Frankie Buck and Alston Cutler.
Mrs. Leggett was born in Bertie County on December 24, 1913, daughter of the late Issac McCony and Minnie Viola Perry Brown. She was a graduate of Mars Hill High School and Tayloe School of Nursing. She later became a Registered Nurse working with the Tayloe Hospital. She married Wilson Tayloe Leggett, Sr. on October 7, 1938 who preceded her in death on May 20, 1992. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Washington, the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, and the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was active in the church and community for many years.
She is survived by: one son, Wilson T. Leggett, Jr. of Seaview, VA; one daughter, Patricia Leggett Skinner of Raleigh; two grandsons; two brothers, Marshall Brown of Colerain and Edward Brown of CA; two sisters, Viola Outland of Sunbury and Joy Sumner of Colerain.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Family will receive friends 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 24th at the Paul Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, 401 E. 2nd Street, Washington, NC 27889.
Arrangements are by Paul Funeral Home, Washington.
