GEORGE EDWARD MARK
RALEIGH - George Edward Mark, 85, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, in Raleigh, where he has resided since April, 1998. He was a former resident of Brackenridge, Pennsylvania, and he and his wife of 64 years moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1969 after retiring from Alcoa.
He is survived by his wife, Helen B. Mark; sons, George Mark, Jr. of Daytona Beach, FL, Charles A. Mark of Dinuba, CA, Richard J. Mark of Raleigh; nephew, John Mark of West Huntington, PA; niece, Sharon Hardy of Port Charlotte, FL; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 at 2 p.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 3901 Computer Drive, Raleigh, NC 27609.
Arrangements will be made by The Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

ANNA L. PARKER
NEW BERN - Mrs. Anna Lawton Lumsden Parker, 100, of 213 New Street, died February 24, 1999 at her residence. Born February 7, 1899 in New Bern, to Clara (Cad) Barrus Lumsden and Horace Charlton Lumsden. She was the wife of the late John Harvey Parker. Lawton Parker had been an active member of Christ Episcopal Church. One of her contributions was the completing of the needle point altar kneeling pads and chair cushions.
Surviving: four cousins, Jack Reardon of New Bern, Rose Allen Parker of Richmond, VA, Gray Hodges and Jay Hodges, both of Washington, NC; nieces, Frances Parker Shell of Raleigh, Ann Parker Garrison of Martinsville, VA, Mary Parker Woodward of Cashiers; nephews, David Freeman and Tom Freeman, both of Chapel Hill, John Freeman of Brevard.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. February 26, 1999 in the Christ Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Mrs. Parker's Home, 213 New Street, New Bern.
Memorials may be made to the Christ Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 320 Pollock Street, New Bern, NC 28560.

FORREST NESBIT PEARCE
KNIGHTDALE - Forest Nesbit Pearce of 1123 Hodge Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999 at his home after a lingering illness. He was a salesman for 35 years with Noland Company and five years with Bradford Sales. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday, February 26, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel. Entombment, Montlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Raleigh.
Surviving: wife, Betsy Driver Pearce; brothers, Walter P. Pearce of Raleigh, Addison E. Pearce of Zebulon; sisters, Elvin P. Poythress of Zebulon, Ernestine P. Ellis of Durham; special nephew, Gary Baker and other nieces and nephews.
Mr. Pearce was preceded in death by his son, Michael Forrest Pearce on August 2, 1994.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, Fourth Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605 or to Green Pines Baptist Church Building Fund, 1498 Hodge Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.

W. DURANT SWINDELL
SWAN QUARTER - William Durant Swindell, 87, of Fairfield died Tuesday evening, February 23, 1999, at Heritage Hospital in Tarboro.
Born in Hyde County, May 29, 1911, he was the son of the late Thomas Franklin and Rebecca Murray Swindell.
He served in the Armed Forces, spent most of his working years in New York City where he retired as accounts executive with Sunkist Corporation. He returned to his beloved Fairfield to reside in his homeplace, and was very active in church, civic and community affairs often providing assistance with music either vocal or accompaniment. He was a member of the Fairfield United Methodist Church. he had spent these last three years living near or with family members in Raleigh, and Hobgood. While in Raleigh, he lived in Country Club Homes.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Swindell Family Plot in Fairfield Cemetery. Rev. Lon Miller and Steve Bryan will officiate.
Surviving are a sister, Catherine Murray Biglelow of Sebastian, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Frank Swindell, Leon Swindell and Lennox Swindell; sister, Elizabeth Mann, Murray Mann, Rebecca Swindell, Margaret Gill and Inez Dodd.
The family suggests that Memorial be sent to Fairfield United Methodist Church, Fairfield, NC 27826.
The family will receive friends at the Church Street Home, Fairfield and the body will lie in state at Bryan Funeral Service, 119 Main Street, Swan Quarter until 9:45 a.m. Friday, when it will be moved to Fairfield for the funeral.

LOIS GARRIS VICK
ROCKY MOUNT - Lois Garris Vick died Wednesday, February 24, 1999 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount following an extended illness. She was born in Edgecombe County, daughter of the late John Mann Garris and Mary Elizabeth Garris. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Dorsey Vick Jr. in July 1998.
She is survived by her son William Dorsey Vick III and her sister, Hazel Garris Wooten; several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Vick was a charter member of the Church of the Resurrection-Lutheran (now Trinity Lutheran Church) where she served her church faithfully as a member until her illness. She was for many years a member of the church choir.
Having worked all her life, Mrs. Vick is best known for her many years in Ladies Ready-to-Wear, most notably at Carole Dress Shop and Bridge's Room where she outfitted women and then their daughters. Upon the closing of Carole's, she worked full-time at the family's restaurant, "Just What the Doctor Ordered" which she helped open in 1982.
She always greeted everyone with a smile and many with a hug. Known affectionately by many as "Kuka" her life was a model of Christian commitment in service to her family and friends. The light and joy she brought into so many lives will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 28, 1999 at Johnson Funeral Home, Fairview Road, with the Rev. Don Safrit officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery, Section 39. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Edgecombe-Nash Humane Society Building Fund, P.O. Box 1783, Rocky Mount, NC 27802-1783.

MARY L. WARD
RALEIGH - Mary Louise Fogg Ward, 82, of 2200 Anderson Dr., died peacefully at her home Wednesday, February 24, 1999. Mrs. Ward was born in Wilkes Barre, PA to the late Charles Williford and Agnes Gannon Fogg. She was a registered Nurse and later became co-owner of Ward Tile. Mrs. Ward was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd. Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in the Montlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. The family will be receiving friends at their home on Anderson Dr.
Surviving is her husband, Joseph Eugene Ward; daughters, Betsey Anne W. Martin of Raleigh, Genie Marie Smith of Columbus, KS; son, Joseph E. Ward Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL; five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to the Helping Hand Mission, 501 New Bern Ave., Raleigh, NC 27601 or to Warmth for Wake, PO Box 46833, Raleigh, NC 27620.

JOHN TRAMMELL CHURCH, SR.
HENDERSON - John Trammell Church, Sr., 81, of 420 Woodland Road, died on Saturday, February 27, 1999. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at The church of the Holy Innocents. Henderson by the Rev. Michael Dunnington. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Funeral arrangements are by J.M. White Funeral Home.

JOAN M. JOHNSON July 12, 1956 - February 28, 1999
WENDELL - Joan Marie Johnson, 42, of 622 Whitley Way, died Sunday night at Wake Med. She was the daughter of the late Tommy and Martha Larson Whitaker. She was owner and director of Education of IntraMed of Raleigh.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Zebulon.
Surviving: husband, Marcus W. Johnson; daughter, Chelsea Joy Johnson of the home; son, Trevor Gregory Johnson of the home.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home, 211 W. Third St., Wendell, other times at the home.

ALMA S. MOODY
"And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord, forever"
LILLINGTON - Our precious Mother, Grandmother and Sister, Mrs. Alma S. Moody, 81, joined her beloved spouse, Richard C. Moody, and her Savior on Sunday, February 28, 1999. Mrs. Moody was the daughter of the late Needham A. and Carrie L. Smith. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Louise Shackleford, and one brother, Needham Smith, Jr.
Mrs. Moody was one of the first to be baptized in Temple Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. Mrs. Moody cherished her family, and possessed cherubic qualities that delighted all that knew her.
Funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. March 3, 1999 at Temple Baptist Church in Raleigh with the Dr. Charles Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Montlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home and other times at the home of Charles and Cara Langdon.
Survivors: son, Richard C. Moody, Jr. of Four Oaks; daughter, Carolyn M. Langdon of Lillington; six sisters, Mable Wallin and Beth Fulford of Farmville, Mary Eason of Macclesfield, Lydonia Nowell of Clayton, Judy I. Smith of Raleigh, Nancy Baxley of Lilburn, GA; two brothers, Thad A. Smith of Garner, William Smith of Wilmington; four grandchildren.
The family would like to thank all those at Harnett Manor Nursing Home who provided such loving care.

HAZEL BROWN RIVERS
RALEIGH - Hazel Brown Rivers, 79, died Sunday, February 28, 1999 at Rex Hospital. Mrs. Rivers was born in St. Johnsbury, VT and was a resident of Raleigh for 35 years. She retired from the YMCA where she had worked as Coffee Shoppe manager.
A Celebration of Life service in her memory will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 2 at Landmark Free Will Baptist Church, 9011 Chapel Hill Rd., Cary, where she was a member.
Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, Harold Heath and Mia Pegram of Germanton, NC, Don and Donna Heath of Clarksville, TN, Jim and Barb Heath of St. Johnsbury, VT, Bob and Patsy Rivers, David and Pam Rivers, Tom and Teresa Rivers, all of Raleigh; sisters, Leona Phillips of Baltimore, MD, Arline Dillon of Newport News, VA, Kathleen Michonski of Chicopee Falls, MA; brother, Ernest Brown of Plymouth, NH; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made in her memory to Landmark Free Will Baptist Church, 9011 Chapel Hill Rd., Cary, NC 27513.

RACHEL LEONA BUCHANAN
CONOVER - Rachel Leona Austin Buchanan, 71, of Charlotte St., Conover died February 28, 1999, at her residence. Born September 19, 1927 in Alexander Co., she was the daughter of the late Everette Sr. and Bessie Ruth Anderson Austin. She retired from Highland House Furniture Co.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Reid Buchanan; brothers, Bruce E. Austin, Coolidge P. Austin, Hal G. Austin, Jack M., Austin, J.E. Austin Jr. and two sisters, Ruby Austin and Blanche Reid Jones.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Turner Pigford of Clayton; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Becky Buchanan of Hickory; sisters, Mildred Hass of Hickory and Peggy Childers of Alexander Co. Survivors also include four grandchildren, Bryan Pigford of Charleston, SC, Justin Pigford of Smithfield, Bonnie and Reid Buchanan, both of Marietta, GA; four great-grandchildren. She is survived also by her sister-in-law, and best friend Peggy Austin.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Bass Smith Funeral Home chapel. Rev. Ernest Austin will officiate.
The family will receive friends at Bass Smith Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, 1999.

GRACE E. CARSWELL
MORGANTON - Grace Ellen Carswell, 89, of US 70 E. Morganton, died Monday, March 1, 1999 at Grace Hospital following an extended illness. Born September 16, 1909 in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Jordan and Etta Lane Jordan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm Taylor Carswell, Sr. and a daughter, Barbara Reep.
She was a member of High Peak Baptist Church, and a former employee of Broad Oaks Nursing Center.
Surviving: sons, Malcolm T. Carswell Jr. of Valdese, Charles W. Carswell of Marshall, Grady A. Carswell of Nebo, Howard W. Carswell of Morganton; daughters, Lillie Branch of Valdese, Elizabeth Jackson of Morganton; brother, Harold Jordan of Morganton; sister, Mildred Ann Branch of Morganton; 29 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 1999 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Reverends P. Dean Lavender and Chris McNeely officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sossoman Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 3157 US 70 East, Morganton.

FEB. 1, 1920-MAR. 1, 1999
GARNER - Loyd Alonze Coats, 79, of 337 B Pecan Lane, died Monday at Rex Hospital.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial, Raleigh Memorial Park.
Surviving: wife, Myrtle L. Coats; daughters, Gail Coats, Jean Trawick and Linda Coggins, all of Garner, Catherine Kelley of Benson; sons, Donald Coats of Durham, Rayvoin Coats of Garner; sisters, Dorothy Holder and Mozelle Page, both of Raleigh, Lela Holland of Benson; brother, James Coats of Clayton; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
