BUTNER - Mrs. Evelyn W. Cook, 84, of Butner, NC, died Sunday, February 28, 1999 in Rex Hospital.
Mrs. Cook was born in Caswell Co., NC on August 26, 1914, the daughter of the late James E. and Mary Van Hook Walker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd C. Cook.
Surviving are two sons, John R. Cook of Raleigh, NC and Thomas E. Cook of Stockton, CA; one daughter, Lynda C. Villeneuve of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Martha Crumpton of Blanch, NC and Margaret Collins of Danville, VA; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 1999 in the Mitchell Funeral Home St. Mary's St. Chapel. Interment will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC.

JIMMY L. CUDDINGTON
FREMONT - Jimmy L. Cuddington, 70, died Monday.
He was the current chairman of the Board of Deacons at Union Grove Free Will Baptist Church.
Funeral, Wednesday, 2 p.m., Union Grove FWB Church. Interment, Holland Family Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Ernestine Barnes Cuddington; son, Gerald Cuddington of Pinkney; grandsons, Jamey Cuddington and Kevin Cuddington; mother, Louise Ballance Cuddington of Wilson; brother, Thomas Earl Cuddington of Wilson; sister-in-law, Velma Rose Sullivan of Pinkney.
The family will be at Shackleford Funeral Service, Tuesday, 7-8:30 p.m.

ELIZABETH J. DUNN
PINETOPS - Elizabeth J. Dunn, 89 died Saturday.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday 3 p.m. at the Pinetops United Methodist Church with the Rev. Graham Royall officiating.
Mrs. Dunn was preceded in death by her husband William L. Dunn, Jr.
Survivors: daughter, Betsy D. Peeples, Concord, CA; sons, William L. Dunn, III, Raleigh, Charles E. Dunn, Salisbury; sister, Ann J. Touey, St. Petersburg, FL; brother, M. Harrison Joyce, Martinsville, VA; granddaughter, Caroline J. Dunn, Chicago; grandson, Robert C. Peeples, Concord, CA.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Pinetops United Methodist Church, Pinetops, NC 27864.
The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the fellowship hall at the church.

REITA CORBETT GATTIS
RALEIGH - Reita Corbett Gattis, 93, of Hillside Nursing Center, Wake Forest, NC, formerly of 4015 St. James Church Road, Raleigh died Monday, March 1, 1999.
Mrs. Gattis was born September 29, 1905 in Johnston County and was the daughter of the late Perrin Busbee Corbett and Lucy Ella Spence Corbett.
Her husband, Carver Milton Gattis preceded her in death. She is survived by one daughter, Julia Franks and her husband Lewis Franks, Raleigh; three grandchildren, Charles M. Franks, John W. Franks and wife Holly Franks of Raleigh; Susan Basnight and her husband, Roger Basnight of Kill Devil Hills, NC; two great-grandsons, Tony and Bob Basnight.
She was a Charter member of St. James United Methodist Church and a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 3308 St. James Church Road, Raleigh, NC 27604.
Funeral service will be conducted at 12 noon on Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and at other times at the home of Lewis and Julia Franks.

ABDEL-HAMID K. HAMDY
RALEIGH - Abdel-Hamid Khaled Hamdy, 86, 8008 Windsor Ridge Drive, Raleigh, died Monday, March 1. Funeral prayer will be held 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at the Islamic Center of Raleigh.
Dr. Hamdy graduated from Yale and Northwestern University and was the director of the United Nations Information Center, New York. He also taught at the University of Alexandria, Egypt and Fairleigh Dickinson Institute of Graduate Studies in New Jersey.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Neveen Hamdy Kamel of Texas and her husband, Elhamy M. Kamel, Shereen Hamdy Faddah of Raleigh and her husband, Adel M. Faddah; four grandchildren, Mona A. Faddah, Jihan E. Kamel, Suzanne E. Kamel and Dina A. Faddah; and his brother, Moustfa Khaled of Cairo, Egypt.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Islamic Center of Raleigh.
Arrangements made through Hanes Funeral Home, Durham.

DR. WALTER H. HARMON
WINSTON-SALEM - Dr. Walter H. Harmon, 93, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999. He attended Buies Creek Academy - graduated in 1923. Graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1926 and Jefferson Medical College in Pennsylvania in 1930. He served his internship at US Naval Hospital in Norfolk, VA and was an assistant surgeon there. Dr. Harmon did his pediatric training at Babies Hospital in Newark, NJ and practiced medicine for 39 years in Hackettstown, NJ. He retired to Pinehurst and was the Track Doctor of NASCAR. Once retired, he moved to Buies Creek and then to Winston-Salem.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday at Buies Creek First Baptist Church in Buies Creek with Dr. Michael Simmons and Rev. John Rogers officiating. Burial, Buies Creek Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Budd and Lenora Stewart Harmon;
Surviving daughter, Gayle Laverty of Winston-Salem; son, Leland "Lee" Harmon of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Buies Creek First Baptist Church Benevolent Fund, Buies Creek, NC 27506.

JOHN WILLIAM LEAGAN
APRIL 21, 1926 - FEB. 28, 1999
RALEIGH - John William Leagan, 72, of 922 Ranch Farm Road, died Sunday. he was a retired supervisor for Bellsouth with 37 years of service. A member of the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church, he was a member of the Vandora Masonic Lodge #745 and served as Master of the lodge in 1973.
Funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Bryan-Lee Funeral chapel in Garner. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh with Masonic Rites.
Surviving: wife, Ida Keith Leagan; sons, William H. "Bill" Leagan II of Raleigh, Richard W. Leagan of Charlotte; two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.

EUNICE P. OGBURN
RALEIGH - Eunice Parker Ogburn, 83, died Monday. She was a graduate of the King Business College and worked with CIT finance in Raleigh for 42 years. Eunice was the widow of James Alfred Ogburn.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are her sister, Flossie P. Barber of Clayton and several nieces and nephews.

DOROTHY "GERRY" RICKS
MOREHEAD CITY - Dorothy Marie Oldham Ricks, known as Gerry, 76, formerly of Long Beach, NC, died Monday at Sunrise Care for Crystal Coast. Mrs. Ricks was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sat., March 6th at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. John H. Grayson officiating.
Surviving: daughters, Vicki Ricks Bishop of Newport, Geri Lee Plummer of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Jim Bishop of Topsail Beach, Tyler Bishop of San Jose, CA, Katherine Adams of Garner, Ashley Plummer and Kayla Plummer, both of Jacksonville, FL; great-grandchild, Brittany Ann Adams of Garner; sisters, Marguerite Creber of Mara, BC, Kathleen Allen of Langle, BC, Irene Muir of Penticton, BC, Edie Noel of Victoria, BC, Doris McEachren of Chilliwack, BC, Isabelle Geldart of Langley, BC; brother, Robert Oldham of Kelowna, BC.
The family will receive friends at St. Andrew's Church parish hall following the service.

MARY YATES
GARNER - Mary Frances Yates of 210 Purvis Street, Garner, died Saturday. Funeral service 12-noon Wednesday at Smith Temple Free Will Baptist Church. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: husband, James A. Yates; son, Gordon A. Yates of Garner; brother, Junior Jackson of Raleigh.
Visitation 11:30-noon Wednesday at the church.

DIANNE J. HARDERSEN
RALEIGH - Dianne J. Hardersen, 48, died Thursday, May 27, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and was involved in the church choir and Stephen Ministry. She was also a member of the Wood Valley Women's Club and Bible Study.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald L. Hardersen; daughters, Angela Hardersen Keith and husband Brandon of Apex, Katherine Grace Hardersen, and Christina Lynn Hardersen, both of Raleigh; parents, Allen and Betty Thompson of Faribault, MN; brothers, Dennis Thompson and wife Kay of Rochester, NY and Roger Thompson and wife Peggy of Faribault, MN; sister, Rebecca Keebaugh and husband Greg of Blue Earth, MN.
The family will receive friends and relatives at North Raleigh Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 am at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. The Hardersen family is being served by North Raleigh Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Rd., 870-5123.

MARGARET SNOW CALLAHAN MANOOCH
RALEIGH - Margaret Snow Callahan Manooch, 76, died May 30, 1999, at her home on Canterbury Road in Raleigh.
Funeral services will be conducted, Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
A native of Raleigh and summer resident of Hoop Hole Creek, Atlantic Beach, "Snow" graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School and Peace College. In the 1940's the Raleigh news media often fondly referred to her as "Raleigh's Golden Girl". During her lifetime, Snow was forever working on behalf of her beloved Raleigh and the State of North Carolina. She was one of the organizers of the Raleigh Boy Choir and served on that group's Board until her death. An active member of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society, she also served for nine years on the North Carolina Tryon Palace Commission. She was a member of the North Carolina Preservation Group and the Raleigh Women's Club. She was a volunteer with the North Carolina Museum of Art and a Docent at the Governor's Mansion in Raleigh. Snow was also a member of the Coral Bay Club at Atlantic Beach and the Bogue Banks Country Club at Pine Knoll Shores.
She is survived by her husband, Col. Charles S. Manooch, Jr. USA (Retired); a son, Dr. Charles S. Manooch, III, of Morehead City; two granddaughters, Rebecca Manooch and Alexandra Manooch; one grandson, Charles S. Manooch, IV, and a great-granddaughter, Laurie Genevieve Capps, who lives with her mother in Raleigh. Snow is also survived by her brother, John W. Callahan, of Lexington, and her aunt, Mrs. Truman Williams, of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers memorials, in her memory, may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, 4th Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605 or The Raleigh Boy Choir, 1329 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607.

VIRGINIA "GENA" MEWIS
RALEIGH - Virginia "Gena" Tatum Mewis, 81, of Springmoor Retirement Community, passed away Sunday, May 30, 1999.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park.
Mrs. Mewis was born June 14, 1917, in College Station, Texas, the daughter of the late Colyar Sutton and Maude Brock Tatum.
Gena was a graduate of Hugh Morson High School and UNC-Greensboro, formerly Women's College. She was a program director with WPTF Radio Station in Raleigh, a News Anchor on the today Show in Washington, DC, and retired in 1979 after 32 years of service as a speech writer for the Department of Agriculture, Washington, DC. During her tenure with the Department of Agriculture, she wrote speeches for many notable politicians of the time, including President John F. Kennedy.
She married Beaufort H. Mewis in 1965, and had been a resident of Springmoor Retirement Community since, 1986.
She is survived by her sister, Marion Tatum Fitz-Simons; nephews and nieces, Sean and Ann Fritz-Simons, Gordon and Carolyn Fitz-Simons, Terence and Linda Fitz-Simons, and Haskell Fitz-Simons, and great-nephews and nieces, Patrick, Blain, Melissa, and Taylor Fitz-Simons.
The family will receive relatives and friends Monday, May 31, 1999, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Springmoor South Village, Valley Apartments, Ground Floor Parlor.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SPCA, P.O, Box 10682, Raleigh, NC 27605-0682.
