WADE JACKSON LAWRENCE
RALEIGH - Wade Jackson Lawrence, 94, of 802 Chamberlain St. died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999. He retired from CP&L after 43 years of service.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Wed., Feb. 10, at Montlawn Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Ballard Lawrence; a son, Donald J. Lawrence of Raleigh; a daughter, Rebecca Davenport of Seven Lakes; a sister Grace Overton of Olive Chapel; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Tues., Feb. 9, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary's St.

BRUNHILDA L. LOFTON
RALEIGH - Brunhilda Lawson Jones Lofton, of 6-B Hoke St., died Sunday, February 7, 1999 at Wake Medical Center after an extended illness. Funeral service to be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, at United Church for All People. Burial follows in Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Mrs. Lofton was the daughter of the late Lee and Jessie Lawson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Lofton and her brother, Leon Lawson, III.
She is survived by her children, Carolyn J. Hinton and Claudia J. Graham, both of Raleigh, Nathaniel Lofton of Richmond, Va., Ernest Lofton of Miami, Fla.; sister-in-law, Rev. Dr. A.M. Lawson; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three nieces; three nephews and a host of loving family members and treasured friends.
The wake will be at the Haywood Funeral Home, 7-8 p.m. Tuesday.

ASHLEY S. MATKINS
FUQUAY-VARINA - Ashley Shay Matkins, 11, died Saturday, February 6, 1999. Memorial service 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 1999 at Thomas Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Surviving: parents, John and Jeanene Matkins; sister, Laurel Matkins of the home; maternal grandparents, Bill and Jean Lewis of Chocowinity; paternal grandparents, Garland and Ruby Matkins of Washington; several aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Ashley Matkins to the Duke Cystic Fibrosis Center, Box 2994, DUMC, Durham, N.C. 27710.

HERMAN W. "KYSER" OVERBY
BRANCHVILLE, Va - Herman Wilson "Kyser" Overby, 72, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, Va.
Funeral services will be held in Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins Virginia Chapel on Wednesday, February 10, 1999 at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins, Va.

THOMAS R. PEPPER
PINEHURST - Mr. Thomas Richard Pepper, 60, died Feb. 7, 1999 at his home. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Feb 9, 1999, at 6 p.m. in Boles Funeral Home chapel conducted by Chaplain Pam Hudson. Mr. Pepper was formerly of Raleigh and a resident of Pinehurst for 5 years.
Surviving are his wife, Irene C. Pepper; daughters, Sharon Pepper of Clayton, Karen Raymond of Raleigh; brother, Kenneth Pepper of Arlington, Va.; aunt, Kathleen Shuman of Richmond, Va. Memorials may be made to First Health Hospice, P.O. Box 1956, Pinehurst, N.C. 28370.

FRED DARDEN SHIPP
CLAYTON - Fred Darden Shipp, 74, of 2005 Arrow Wood Circle, died Monday February 8, 1999. Graveside service Wednesday 3:30 p.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Randy Bishop officiating.
He is survived by: wife, Evelyn P. Shipp of Clayton; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan Shipp of Henderson, Jan S. and Mike Wallace of Clayton, Kim S. Allen of Clayton, Cathy S. and Harold Boyette of Clayton; grandchildren, Heather and David Brown of Clayton, Lindsay Wallace of Raleigh, Scott and Leslie Boyette of Clayton.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Clayton Rescue Squad, 231 E. 2nd St., Clayton, NC 27520.
Family will receive friends at McLaurin Funeral Home, Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. other times at the home.

ANNIE MAE SMITH
APRIL 29, 1914 - FEB. 7, 1999
FUQUAY-VARINA - Annie Mae Smith, 84, of 103-B Youngwood Road, died Sunday. Funeral 2 p.m. Thursday at Bryan-Lee Chapel, Garner. Burial, Raleigh Memorial Park.
Surviving: daughters, Roberta Dunn of Franklinton, Ethel B. Bridges of Garner, Margaret Brady of Fuquay-Varina, Christine Smith of Kipling; stepdaughter, Dorothy Kelly of Raleigh; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and other times at the home of Margaret Brady, 103-B Youngwood Road, Fuquay-Varina and Ethel Bridges, 827A Delta Street, Garner.

NATHAN BRINSON
RALEIGH - Nathan Brinson of 1423 E. Jones Street died on Thursday, April 8, 1999.
Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, 1999 at First Congregational Church. Visitation at the church Tuesday from 11:30-12 p.m. Interment takes place at Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving relatives, to cherish his memory include his wife, Dorothy Trevan Brinson; one sister, Edna B. Gray of Clinton, NC; two brothers, Earl Brinson of Snow Hill, NC and James Brinson of Englewood, NJ; several nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

SPENCER T. WOLFE
RALEIGH - Spencer Truman Wolfe was born in Coulee Dam, Washington to Clyde and Leona Wolfe on September 18, 1941. He was raised there and in Moses Lake, Washington where he attended Moses Lake High School. He was active in student government, the National Honor Society, played quarterback for the high school football team and was a two-time state wrestling champion. Upon graduation, he attended Washington State University in Pullman, Washington on a wrestling scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in architectural engineering. While at WSU, he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. In 1970, Spencer won a Fulbright Scholarship to study architecture in Finland which influenced his later work in its refinement and subtlety. He returned to WSU where he earned an MS in architectural design and taught for several years as a professor of design. He was an award winning architect who taught and practiced architecture in Washington State, Virginia and North Carolina. Spencer served on the faculty at NCSU School of Design and most recently as a Facilities Design Supervisor for the North Carolina Department of Corrections.
Spencer was of Osage ancestry and had embraced diverse spiritual and cultural convictions. He was an active proponent of Transcendental Meditation and recently visited with the Avatar, Mother Meera in Germany. Throughout life, Spencer has been an inspiration to a wide array of students, colleagues, friends and family.
Spencer is survived by his children, Nevada A. Wolfe and Manu A. Wolfe and their mother, Merja V. Wolfe of Raleigh. He had one grandchild, Ezra A. Frazier; two brothers, Clyde A. Wolfe of Sedona, Ariz., Thad A. Wolfe of Burke, Va. He is also survived by long time friend and companion, Kathryn Rodriguez of Raleigh and her daughters, Lisa and Ana of Asheville.
A memorial service is planned for Sunday, April 25, at 10 a.m. at the Lake Crabtree Boat Pavilion which Spencer designed. In the event of rain, the service will be held at Spencer and Kathryn's home at 6212 Rushingbrook Drive, Raleigh, N.C.
A memorial and burial service is planned for Sunday, August 1, 1999 in Grand Coulee, Washington at 3 p.m. at the Spring Canyon Cemetery.
Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road, Raleigh.

T. MOODY AUSTIN
FUQUAY-VARINA - Thomas Moody Austin, 87, died Sunday. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sugg Funeral Chapel. Burial, Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving: sons, Billy Austin of Fuquay-Varina and O'Neal Austin of Holly Springs; daughters, Jean A. Truelove and husband Percy, Ann A. Baker and Husband Gene, all of Holly Springs; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Sugg Funeral Home.

MICHAEL TERRY BELL
RALEIGH - Michael Terry Bell, 50, of 524 Grosvenor Drive, died Saturday at Rex Hospital.
Funeral service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 1999 at Krause Funeral Home Chapel, Milwaukee, WI. Burial will be on Thursday at Highland Memorial Park.
Surviving are hs wife, Lynn E. Bell; daughter, Heather M. Bell of the home; mother, Norma N. Bell of Ramseur, NC; brother, Maurice Bell, Jr. and wife, Vicki of Milwaukee, WI; sister, Donna Jessup and husband, Russell of Ramseur, NC; mother-in-law, Dolores A. Erickson of Raleigh, NC; other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at Krause Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the service.

LILLIE MAE POE BLAYLOCK
CARY - Lillie Mae Blaylock 80, of Cary, died Sunday, April 11, 1999. She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clifford Blaylock and a grandson, Wayne Sugg.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday 2 p.m., April 13, at the First Baptist Church in Cary. The burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
Mrs. Blaylock is survived by her three daughters, Marie Sugg of Angier, Ruth Heater of Sumter, SC and Shirley Davis of Atlanta, Georgia; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 12, at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church, General Fund, 218 South Academy Street, Cary, NC 27511.

CAROL ELAINE BOND
RALEIGH - Carol Elaine Bond, passed away on Saturday, April 10, 1999 at Rex Hospital. Ms. Bond was employed by the city of Raleigh in the Public Utilities Department as the Environmental Coordinator. Funeral service 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 1999 at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Surviving: daughters, Lisa Bond, Cheryl Bond, Cathy Bond and Karen Bond, all of Raleigh.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 12, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, N.C. 27545.

LEVIE CAROL BOWEN
ROCKY MOUNT - Levie Carol Bowen, 88, died Sunday. He was born January 11, 1911 in Duplin County. He was the son of the late James K. and Elizabeth Gideon Bowen. Mr. Bowen was preceded in death by his wife, Vonnie Underwood Bowen. He was a member of the Sunset Avenue Baptist Church and retired owner and operator of Bowen's Saw Service.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Willa Rae and Don Sutton of Rocky Mount; grandson and wife, Michael Don and Cathy Thorne Sutton of Red Oak; granddaughter and husband, Joanie S. and Jack King of Red Oak; great-grandchildren, Jaime Bowen King of Red Oak and Michael Don Sutton Jr. of Red Oak.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue with the Rev. Coye Still, III officiating. Burial will follow in the Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the home of the daughter, 3715 Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount.
The family request that memorials be made to Sunset Baptist Church, 3732 Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount.

FRED CLAUDE CATES
HALIFAX - Mr. Fred Claude Cates, age 84, of 104 Pittsylvania Street, Halifax, NC; died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Cates, was a native of Spencer, NC, the son of the late Currie Ransome Cates Sr. and Maude Tucker Cates. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, a former employee of Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company and retired Chief Examiner, for the NC Department of Insurance.
Mr. Cates was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Lee Hux Cates, who died, Sept. 10, 1984. He was a member of Royal White Hart Masonic Lodge #2.
Surviving: a daughter, Eva Davis Koenigsburg of Norfolk, VA; a sister, Maude C. Earnhardt of Salisbury, NC; a brother, Currie R. Cates Jr. of Spencer, NC; a sister-in-law, Sara Hux Townsend of Martinsburg, WVA; a brother-in-law, George A. Hux of Rocky Mount, NC; two grandchildren, G. Marc Davis of Norfolk, VA, Susan Lee Davis of Norfolk, VA; four great-grandchildren, William G. Davis of Norfolk, VA, Jackson G. Davis of Norfolk, VA, Sara Madison Ocampo of Norfolk, VA, Robert A. Ocampo of Norfolk, VA.
Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, April 13, 1999 at 3 p.m., at Halifax United Methodist Church with Rev. Caswell E. Shaw Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Halifax United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive at Wrenn Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, NC, Monday, April 12, 1999 from 7-8:30 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to Halifax United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund or Halifax United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 365, Halifax, NC 27839.
