WILLIAM "MITCH" CURRAN
MAY 29, 1959-APR. 10, 1999
GARNER - William Mitchell "Mitch" Curran, 39, of Hwy. 42, died Saturday.
Funeral 7 p.m. tonight in the Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial, 11 a.m. Tuesday Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Surviving: daughter, Jennifer Curran of Garner; parents, James R. and Lucille Curran of Middlesboro, KY; brothers, Robert Curran and John Curran, both of Garner. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Curran.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.

DR. CHARLES W. DUFFY
NEW BERN - Dr. Charles W. Duffy, MD, age 93 died April 10, 1999 in the Twin Rivers Nursing Center, New Bern, NC.
He practiced general medicine for 58 years. He was born in New Bern in 1905 and was the fifth generation of doctors, carrying on the tradition of his late father, Dr. Leincester Duffy. His mother was the late Bertha Mathilde Kafer Duffy.
After graduation from Washington and Lee University, he went on to complete Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1930. He interned at Episcopal Hospital and did his residency in Pediatrics at Babies Hospital in Philadelphia where he met his wife of 51 years, the late Mary Pickett Breck Duffy, a registered nurse at the time.
Dr. Duffy was in the Medical ROTC from 1930 to 1936. During World War II he was on the Craven County Draft Board as examining physician. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Craven County Medical Society. He was preceded in death by two brothers, the late Leincester Duffy and the late Col. Marcelus Duffy USAF Retired.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 13, 1999 at 3 p.m. in the Pollock-Wells & Best Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Coleman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by: two sons, Charles Duffy, Jr. of New Bern, Daniel Breck Duffy of Virginia Beach, VA; a daughter, Mathilde Duffy of Watertown, Massachusetts; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

GERTRUDE W. ECKERT
RALEIGH - Gertrude Westen Eckert, 101, of Springmoor Retirement Community, died Saturday.
Born December 28, 1897 in Harrisburg, Pa., she moved to Raleigh in 1942 with her husband Harold E. Eckert who died in 1983. She had been an active member of Hayes-Barton United Methodist Church and was a member of the Raleigh Country Club since its founding.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Eckert Quinn and her husband, Dr. Galen W. Quinn of Raleigh; grandson, Christopher Eckert Cates and his wife, Laura T. of Fayetteville; granddaughter, Catherine Westen Cates of Wilmington.
Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will be at 444 Drummond Drive.

ASOMANA JUDD
FUQUAY-VARINA - Asomana B. Judd, 80, of 76 Cokesbury Rd., died Friday at Western Wake Hospital in Cary. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Christian Chapel Church. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: one son, Ervin Young Judd of Holly Springs; three daughters, Vivian Gainey of Apex, Lottie Jane Evans of Durham; Sharon Paige of Wendell; one foster daughter, Gaynelle Hall of Raleigh; two sisters, Mildred Judd of Apex, Christine Albert of New York; two brothers, Stant Bullock of Apex, Willie Bullock of New York; 26 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Wake 7-8 p.m. today at Trice Funeral Home Chapel, Fuquay-Varina.
Services under the direction of Trice Funeral Home.

RAYMOND C. MORING
RALEIGH - Raymond C. Moring, of 804 E. Lane Street, died Wednesday.
Funeral service Tuesday 1 p.m. at Martin Street Baptist Church. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: wife, Mary Esther Moring of Raleigh; daughters, Barbara M. Graves (Raymond), Esther Patricia Moring, Pamela Odessa Anderson, and Marion Michele Moring all of Raleigh; son, Raymond Ceola Moring Jr. of Raleigh. Also surviving three grandchildren, Raymond B. Graves, Alicia Y. Graves, and Clyde W. Anderson, Jr.; 12 nephews; 15 nieces; other relatives and friends.
Visitation at Lea Funeral Home from 7-8 p.m. Monday. The family will also receive friends at 1908 Southgate Dr.

OCTAVIA SYKES SMITH
RALEIGH - Born in Gulf City, Florida, Mrs. Smith moved to Lemon Springs in Lee County upon her marriage to Alton Lacy Smith, merchant. There she raised her family, taught violin and piano and served for many years as organist for the Lemon Springs Methodist Church. After he husband's death, she came to Raleigh and was one of the first residents of Capital Towers retirement community. There will be a private family service at Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh.
Surviving: daughters, Lucy S. Martin and husband Van C. Martin of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; son, Dr. Alton L. Smith Jr.; five grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by spouse, Alton Lacy Smith and daughter Carolyn S. Wendrich.
Arrangements by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.

BEULAH W. MASON
RALEIGH - Beulah W. Mason, of 2009 Waters Drive entered into eternal rest on Sunday, April 11, 1999. Funeral service to be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Friday, at First Congregational Church.
The family will receive friends one half hour prior to the service. Interment takes place at Carolina Biblical Gardens. The service will be officiated by Rev. Donald R. Ingram Sr.
Mrs. Mason was educated in Raleigh Public Schools and received a Chemistry degree from Shaw University. She dedicated her life to teaching. She retired after 45 years of service within Wake County School System. After retiring, Mrs. Mason continued educating others by teaching GED classes at the YWCA. She also taught as an instructor at Wake Technical Institute.
Until her illness, Mrs. Mason was an active member of First Congregational Church. Throughout the years she held numerous positions within the church.
Surviving relatives to cherish her memory include her grandchildren, Michele Parks of Raleigh, Michael Palmer of Raleigh, Andre' and Juan Hinton of Raleigh, Henri and Anthony Glover of Dallas, TX, Velda Glover of New York; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

DORIS GILCHRIST ROGERS
LILLINGTON - Mrs. Doris Gilchrist Rogers, 63, a native of Harnett Co., died Wednesday at her home. She was a graduate of Flora MacDonald College of Red Springs in 1958. She was an elementary school teacher for Harnett Co. Public Schools for 36 years teaching mainly at the Boone Trail Elementary School. She also taught at Central Carolina Community College and was the secretary for Antioch Baptist Church.
Funeral 4 p.m. Friday, Antioch Baptist Church in Mamers with Rev. Martin Groover. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Thursday at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Gilchrist and Wilbur Gilchrist.
She is survived by her husband, Thurman Rogers of the home; daughters, Rachelle R. Harmon and Allison Doris Rogers, both of Lillington; sons, Henry Rogers of Apex; brothers, Charles Gilchrist and Ray Gilchrist, both of Sanford, Wade Gilchrist of Statesville; one step-granddaughter.

JAMES E. BRISCOE
KENLY - James Enos Briscoe, 76, of Kenly died Tuesday. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Coley Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Jerome Mozingo. Burial will follow in White Oak Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Surviving are daughters; Bonnie Hughes of Elm City, Dottie Boyette of Lucama, Kim Briscoe of Durham and Connie Crumpler of Stantonsburg; sons, Tommy Briscoe and Doug Briscoe of Selma and Cecil Thompson of Cary; sisters, Bette Crotts of Winston-Salem, Marie Annis of Raleigh and Edith Balazsi of Kenly; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Coley Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to; ALS Association, N.C. Chapter, 1301 N. Salem St., Apex, NC 27502.

MARY L. BROWN
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Mary Leonard Brown, 82, Twin Lakes Retirement Center, Burlington, died April 13, 1999. Mrs. Brown was born in Greencastle, PA and considered Waynesboro, PA her home.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John D. and Iva Marrah Porter and her first husband, Dr. Lawrence A Leonard.
She is survived by her 2nd husband, William L. Brown; son, Daniel L. Leonard of Carrboro; daughters, Virginia L. Ackley of Marietta, GA, Rebecca L. Curtis of Bent Mountain, VA; stepsons, Chris Brown of Greencastle, PA, Richard Brown of State College, PA; one grandson; two granddaughters; two step-grandsons; two step-granddaughters.
Mrs. Brown was a graduate of Catawba College and did graduate work at UNC Greensboro and UNC Chapel Hill in North Carolina. She was a school librarian for 20 years in the Burlington City Schools. Before that, she taught in the Lincoln County, Rowan County, and Asheboro City School Systems. She was a member of St. Mark's Reformed Church, a volunteer for 10 years of the Alamance Memorial Hospital, a member of ADK, a past president of Alamance/Burlington Retired School Personnel, a member of the Eastern Star, Elizabeth Chapter #41.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Friday, April 16, 1999 in St. Mark's Reformed Church.
Visitation will be in the St. Mark's Chapel immediately following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence at Twin Lakes Retirement Center, 3816 Wesley Court, Burlington, NC.
Rich & Thompson Funeral Service, Burlington is in charge of arrangements.

HELEN GOODWIN CHERRY
CLARKSVILLE, Va. - Helen Goodwin Cherry, 78, of Valley St., Clarksville, Va., died April 14, 1999 in the Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston, Va.
She was a native of Chatham Co., and was a retired secretary and bookkeeper. She was an avid bridge player.
Funeral service will be held Friday, April 16, 1999 at 2 p.m. in the Olive Chapel Baptist Church in Apex, N.C., officiating will be Dr. Mark Crumpler. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors are: her husband, Hugh P. Cherry of the home; three daughters, Jo Cherry of the home; three daughters, Jo Cherry Brooks and husband, Robert of Raleigh, Betsy Cherry Mohr and husband, Frederick of Raleigh, June Cherry of Cary; brother, Earl G. Goodwin and wife, Karen of Apex; a sister, Doris G. Overman of Apex; her stepmother, Veanna P. Goodwin of Apex; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today, April 15, 1999 at Apex Funeral Home, 511 West Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex, N.C. and other times at the home of Robert and Jo Cherry Brooks, 3608 Dade St., Raleigh, N.C.

NANCY ANN WOODLIEF DEBNAM
YOUNGSVILLE - Nancy Ann Woodlief Debnam, 53, of 2040 Moores Pond Rd., died Tuesday at Wake Medical Center. She was born in Wake County the daughter of the late Bennie Green and Nealie Alford Woodlief, and was preceded in death by an infant son. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home, burial will follow in the Bunn Town Cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Ashley Debnam Sr.; son, Ashley Debnam Jr. of the home; brothers, Carl Ray Woodlief and wife Janice of Youngsville, James Woodlief and wife Peggy of Wake Forest; very special friend, Vassar Shearon of Wake Forest; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church, 2124 Oak Grove Church Rd., Youngsville, NC 27596.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest.

MARY JANE GEIGNER HAYEK
ASHEVILLE - Mary Jane Geigner Hayek, 65, died Tuesday, April 13, 1999.
Born in Wauwatosa, WI, she was the daughter of Florence Ehlers Geigner and Charles Geigner.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Georgia Lambeck and Virginia Hass.
She received her B.A. in History from East Carolina University. She served as a volunteer at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC and at St. Joseph's Hospital, Asheville, NC. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Asheville, the Knitters Guild, the Woodland Hills Garden Club and Woodland Hills Bridge Club.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Dean H. Hayek of Asheville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and John Beamer of Franklinton, NC and Deanna and Sherwood Southerland, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Charles and Marcie Hayek of Shelby, NC; five grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Geigner of Milwaukie, WI and Paul Geigner of Hales Corners, WI.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Morris Funeral Home, Merrimon Avenue. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Morris Funeral Home with Dr. Albert G. Peery, Jr., and Rev. Elizabeth S. Duttera officiating. Memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O. Box 1616, Asheville, NC 28802.

ELI HILLIARD JR.
FUQUAY-VARINA - Eli Hilliard Jr., 74, died Tuesday. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday at Sugg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial in the Jones Family Cemetery.
Surviving: sisters, Ethleene Holland and Betty J. Baker of Fuquay-Varina, Charlotte Ward of Apex; brother, Charles W. Hilliard of Apex.
