ANNIE AUSTIN BRANNAN
RALEIGH - Annie Austin Brannan, 92, of Raleigh, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999.
Mrs. Brannan was born in Johnston County to the late David A. and Callie Stephenson Austin.
Mrs. Brannan worked for 42 years at Dorthea Dix Hospital before retiring in 1969 as Director of Nursing.
Her husband, David Lee Brannan and six brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Athen Drive Baptist Church. Burial will be private.
Surviving are her son, Michael A. Brannan and his wife, Carol Ann of Raleigh; daughter, Ann W. Neisz of Raleigh; sister, Vileigh Narron of Goldsboro, NC; four grandchildren, Lee and Lance Neisz, Melissa Hughes and Lesley Warren, all of Raleigh; and great-grandson, Trey Hughes.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington St.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605; or to the Annie A. Brannan Library, c/o Dorthea Dix Hospital.

DR. WILLIAM J. FURR
RALEIGH - Dr. William J. Furr, died Thursday, June 17, 1999 at Rex Hospital.
Bill was born in Concord, North Carolina. He graduated from Wingate College in 1959, received the Bachelor of Arts Degree (cum laude) from Furman University in 1961. He received the Bachelor of Divinity Degree and the Doctor of Ministry degrees from Southeastern Seminary. Bill was president of the student body his high school senior year and president of the student body at Wingate College.
Bill lived out of God's call for his life by serving the Lee's Chapel Baptist Church, Middlesex, NC, the Bethesda Baptist Church, Clayton, NC, the First Baptist Church of Chadbourn, NC the First Baptist Church of Newton, NC, Northwest Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC and then finished his full-time ministry at Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh, where he served for 17 years. During the past year Bill served as intentional interim minister at Clemmons First Baptist Church in Clemmons, NC.
Bill is survived by his wife, Bobbie; his children and their spouses: son, William Jeffrey and Meredith Furr of Raleigh, NC and daughter, Jamie and Brian Marlowe of Winston-Salem, NC. Bill is also survived by two sisters, Peggy Huneycutt of Concord, NC and Linda Riley of Lincolnton, NC. Bill was a beloved husband, father, pastor, and friend.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh. Interment will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road in Raleigh.

EVELYN BATTS BAILEY
TARBORO - Evelyn Batts Bailey, 87, died Wednesday. Mrs. Bailey, a resident of the Albemarle died Wednesday, June 16, 1999. She was the wife of the late Radford B. Bailey and the daughter of the late David Franklin and Narcissus Hayes Batts of Macclesfield. Evelyn was a member of Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church where for many years she served as a Sunday School Teacher and pianist. She was an employee of the Edgecombe County Memorial Library for 21 1/2 years serving as Director of the library for seven years.
A memorial service 3 p.m. Sunday at the Albemarle, 200 Trade St., Tarboro.
Survivors: son, Radford B. Bailey, Jr., Charlotte; sister, Joyce Batts Bardin, Raleigh; brothers, Vincent Hayes Batts, Charlotte, Raymond Howard Batts, Macclesfield; two nieces and six nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church, 303 E. St. James St., Tarboro or Edgecombe County Memorial Library, 909 Main Street, Tarboro.
The family will greet friends following the memorial service.

THOMAS E. BAKER
GREENSBORO - Mr. Thomas E. Baker, 47, of Greensboro, NC, died June 15, 1999 at Wesley Long Community Hospital.
There will be a Memorial Service at 2 p.m. Friday, June 18, 1999 at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church. The family will receive in the Church Parlor after the Service.
Thomas was predeceased by his father, John Mebane Baker.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Debra Woodhouse Baker of the home; mother, Nina Garrison Baker of Greensboro; brother, William Mebane Baker and his wife Margaret of Easley, SC; sister, Glenda Wilkinson and husband B. R. of Chester, VA; nephews, Bryan A. Baker of Easley, SC, Jason, Jeremy Wilkinson; niece, Jennifer Wilkinson of Chester, VA.Thomas received his B.S. from UNC Chapel Hill and his Master of History at UNC at Greensboro. He was employed by the U.S. National Park Service as the military Historian at Guilford Courthouse National military Park, Greensboro, NC.
The family would like memorials in lieu of flowers to be made to the Thomas E. Baker Memorial Fund, c/o Guilford Battleground Company, 2332 New Garden Rd., Greensboro, NC 27410.
Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Chapel is serving the family.

RUBY J. POLLARD BENNETT
RALEIGH - Ruby Jacqueline Pollard Bennett, 62, of 1117 Beacon Lake Road, died Thursday, June 17, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital. Memorial service 7 p.m. Friday, June 18, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel.
Surviving: sons, Glenn Anderson Mills and his wife, Maureen of Susquehanna, PA, Tony Wayne Mills and his wife, Brenda of Wendell, Richard Gordon Mills and his wife, Peggy of Indianapolis, Indiana; daughters, Jackie Lynn Mills Hinton of Wake Forest, Tammy Marie Mills of Raleigh; brother, David Wayne Pollard and his wife, Faye of Apex; 11 grandchildren.
Ruby was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Daniel Mills, December 1992.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 18, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service & Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC.

VIRGINIA AUSTELL BIRD
MATTHEWS - Mrs. Virginia Austell Bird, 85, died Thursday. She was born in Greenville, SC and was formerly of Raleigh. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Matthews, NC. A member of Eastern Star of Saint Pauls and Red Springs, NC and a graduate of Mars Hill College. She was preceded in death by her husband Marion Wylie Bird and parents Joseph Hopson "Joe" and Edna Roberts Austell
Surviving: son, Thomas Bird and wife Debbie Bird of Anderson, Indiana; Carolyne Mew and husband John Mew of Fairmont, NC, Jo Bird Conway and husband Donald Conway of Monroe, NC, Marion Hester of Stoneville, NC; brothers, Joseph Roberts Austell and sister-in-law Frances Jones Austell of Palm Coast, FL, sister-in-law, Sara Tiller Bird of Darlington, SC; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Matthews, NC. Burial, Sunset Cemetery. Rev. John Butler and Rev. Jimmy Bird officiating.
Family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Matthews from 10-11 Saturday. Graveside service 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Shelby, NC.

BETTIE WARREN BOONE
NASHVILLE --Bettie Warren Boone, 98, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at Methodist Retirement Home in Durham. She was born in Nash County, January 25, 1901, daughter of the late Thomas Thaddeus and Etta Bryan Warren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert W. Boone. Mrs. Boone was a graduate of State Norman Industrial School, a retired employee with Nash County School System and a member of White Oak United Methodist Church.
Surviving: daughters and son-in-law, Thelma B. and Walter Cooke of Nashville, Edna B. James of Nashville, Edith B. Toussaint of Raleigh, Joyce B. Ammons of Fayetteville; son and daughter-in-law, Warren and Lois Boone of Spring Hope; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Nashville United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Redmond, Rev. Lester P. Jackson and Rev. John Crowe officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
Family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Johnson Chapel, Nashville and other times at 313 S. First Street, Nashville.
Memorials may be made to Nashville United Methodist Church or White Oak United Methodist Church.

JOHNNIE L. BROWN
AHOSKIE - Mrs. Johnnie Leggett Brown, 100, of the 200 Block of Carolina Drive, died June 16, 1999 in Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
Mrs. Brown was born in Bertie County and was a member of Creech Memorial Baptist Church. She was the widow of Luther Brown.
Survivors include three daughters: Inez Pierce of Ahoskie, Florence Norville of Severn, MD, Ann Batchelor of Durham; two sons, Carl Brown of Newport, NC, Arthur Brown of Ahoskie; two sisters, Lucy Modlin and Laura Holloman, both of Ahoskie; 15 grandchildren; several great and several great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie. Entombment will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. Friday and other times at the home.
Memorial donations may be made to Creech Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 764, Ahoskie, NC, 27910.

W. FRANK FERRELL
APR. 12, 1919 - JUNE 17, 1999
GARNER - William Frank Ferrell, 80, of 2800 Dunhaven Drive, died Thursday, June 17, 1999.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Saturday at Garner United Methodist Church by Rev. James Sutton and Rev. Keith Nanny. Entombment, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Born in Wake Co., he was the son of the late Willie Edward Ferrell and Lina Agnes Jones Ferrell. His professional career in retail furniture included an association with Kimbrell's Furniture in 1942 until the late 1950's when he was the co-owner of Wilson-Ferrell Furniture Co., in Raleigh. In 1963, Mr. Ferrell opened Garner Wayside Furniture in Garner which he operated until 1986 when he retired due to health reasons.
He is survived by his wife, Doris N. Ferrell; a daughter, Kathy F. Rowell and her husband Ronnie Rowell of Raleigh; a son, Bill Ferrell and his wife Betsy Ferrell of Raleigh; a sister, Lina Mae Edwards of Apex; and six grandchildren, Eric, Ginny, Amy, Molly, Sarah, and David.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake Co., 1300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.

PETER A. GOGG
RALEIGH - Peter Alfred Gogg, died on June 16, 1999 after a long illness. Born Feb. 19, 1944 in Neunkirchen, Austria, he lived in Fairfield, Connecticut before relocating to Raleigh. He worked for Avon Products in New York and traveled the world extensively.
Surviving are his wife, Maria Judith de la Cruz; daughter, Nadine of CT; sister, Monika Eilerman of Dallas, TX; stepson, Christopher Michael Woodlief of Wake Forest.
The memorial service will be held 12 p.m. Friday, June 18, 1999 at St. Catherine of Siena Church with Father Tully officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Catherine of Siena Church, 520 W. Holding Ave., Wake Forest, NC 27587.

MURIEL M. HAUG
CHAPEL HILL - Muriel M. Haug, died on Wednesday, June 16, 1999.
Born on February 11, 1944 in Brooklyn, NY, and raised as an Air Force dependent, she lived in Florida, Alaska, Alabama, Japan, Ohio and Washington, DC. She moved to Greensboro, North Carolina in 1964 and moved to Chapel Hill in 1975.
Muriel is survived by many loving friends and family members.
Surviving family are son, Paul Adrian of Dayton Ohio; mother, Muriel A. Haug of Punta Gorda, FL; sister, Paulette C. Compton of Phoenix, AZ; nieces, Jessica A. Liebman of Phoenix, AZ; Stephanie A. Liebman of Flagstaff, AZ; nephew, Joseph A. Liebman of Flagstaff, AZ; aunt and uncle, Cathie and Howard F. Haug of St. Augustine, FL; cousins, Kat and Armand Boatman of Phoenix, AZ and Howard J. Haug of Atlanta, Georgia.
Muriel was employed for 16 years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Recently, she held the position of Administrative Assistant at the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine, where she was a cherished and valued employee and friend.
A special memorial will be held in Memory and Honor of Muriel M. Haug on Friday, June 18, 1999 from 1-3 p.m. at Wesley Foundation on Pittsboro Street.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh, NC.

JOEL B. HONEYCUTT
WILSON - Joel Bright Honeycutt, 75, died Thursday.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Kent Honeycutt.
Funeral, Saturday, 4 p.m., Thomas-Yelverton Chapel. Interment, Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: wife, Mary Ann Parrish Honeycutt; daughters, Libby Gallaghner of Wilson and JoAnn Tucker of Greensboro; sons, Joel B. Honeycutt Jr. of Wilson and Kenny Honeycutt of Tarboro; sisters, Rebecca Honeycutt of Fuquay-Varina and Vada Griffin of Chesapeake, Va; brother, Lee Honeycutt of Angier; seven grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home, today, 7-8:30 p.m.
