VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Gladys P. James, 86, died Wednesday at her residence. She was born in Pitt County, NC and was the widow of Robert C. James Sr. She was a retired seamstress.
Surviving: four daughters, Eleanor Bunting of Greenville, NC, Jean Holbert of Chesapeake, Barbara Krier of Ocala, FL, Kay Sharp of Virginia Beach; sons, Robert C. James Jr. and Russell James both of Chesapeake;14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 18, 1999 Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Terry Beck officiating.

LOUISE WHITNEY McALLISTER
CHARLOTTE - Louise Whitney McAllister, of Whispering Pines, died on Wednesday, June 16, 1999, in Charlotte, NC.
Mrs. McAllister is survived by her son, David Whitney McAllister; a brother, Charles Flagg Whitney; and two grandsons
Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Mrs. McAllister.

JOAN MAYER MCSORLEY
CARY - Joan Mayer McSorley, 69, of Cary, died Thursday morning at her home.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph A. McSorley; two sons, David J. McSorley and wife Debra of Apex, James M. McSorley and wife Laura of Greensboro; one daughter, Joyce M. Sigmon of Conover, NC; four grandchildren, Grant and Gregory Sigmon of Conover, and Brian and Kimberly McSorley of Apex.
Funeral services will be held Saturday evening at 8 p.m. at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Chapel in Cary. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the American Diabetes. Association, 434 Fayetteville Street, 2 Hanover Square, Suite 1600, Raleigh, NC 27601-1764 or to the Cary Kidney Center, 5045 Old Raleigh Road, Cary, NC 27511.

RUDOLPH HESTER PLEASANTS
WALLACE - Rudolph Hester Pleasants, 69, of 191 Sunset Road, formerly of 4720 Mitchell Mill Road, Wake Forest, died Thursday, June 17, 1999 at Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville.
Mr Pleasants had retired from Davie Warehouse Auto Parts.
Funeral service 3 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, Knightdale. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Parks.
Surviving: wife, Lucille Keziah Pleasants; stepsons, Max Godfry of Cary, Jeffrey Yandle and Russell Yandle, both of Raleigh; step daughter, Susan Yandle Hayes of Wallace; brother, James Pleasants of Florida; sisters, Della P. Medlin of Wendell, Lucille P. Morgan of Durham; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 18, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home of Russell and Sheila Yandle, 3633 Meadow Creek Lane, Raleigh, NC.

ONES E. POLK
RALEIGH - Ones E. Polk, of 2020 Waters Drive, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999 after a lengthy illness. Mr. Polk was born in Polkton, NC on July 30, 1925. Son of the late Ernest and Flonnie Bell Polk. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sadie P. Lindsey and grandson, Ones Waddell Polk, II. He attended school in the Anson County School System and later served in the U.S. Army. After discharged Mr. Polk moved to Raleigh, NC, gaining employment with Pine State Creamery. Several years later he gained partnership with ACME Cab Company and owned several lines of transportation. His transporting services included serving the Wake County School System and Wake Federation of the Blind. Mr. Polk was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church serving in the Male Chorus and on Deacon Board.
Surviving: wife, Lee Elsie Hinton Polk of the home; sons, Ones Waddell, Ricky L., Reginald S., Frankie C., all of Raleigh; brothers, James E. Polk, Curtis Polk of Charlotte, NC; sister, Louis M. Davis of Charlotte; a special mother-in-law, Mrs. Lillian Hinton of Raleigh; and special aunt, Easter H. Sanders of Garner.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 18, at Faith Missionary Baptist Church, 908 Suffolk Blvd.
Acknowledgments and remarks will be presented during the viewing from 12:30-1 p.m. on Friday.
Interment will follow in Carolina Biblical Gardens.

C.J. ROGERS
CHARLOTTE - C.J. Rogers, 83, of Harrisburg, NC, died Thursday, June 17, 1999 at Carolinas Medical Center. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 1999 at Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church with Reverend James M. Armstrong Jr. officiating. Interment with full Highway Patrol honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. this evening at Hankins and Whittington - Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Blvd.
Mr. Rogers, a native of Franklin County, was the son of the late W. A. Rogers and Addie Foster Rogers. He grew up in the Rolesville area of Wake County. In 1941, C.J. joined the North Carolina Highway Patrol which he served until his retirement in 1977. Following his retirement, he was a hearing officer for the North Carolina Department of Insurance for four years. C.J. was a longtime member of Hawthorn Lane United Methodist Church, the JOY Outlook Sunday School Class, Young At Heart, a greeter, and many other capacities at the church. He was a member of the Excelsior Lodge No. 261, Scottish Rites Bodies, Oasis Temple, Oasis Patrol Unit and the Royal Order of the Jesters. He was also a member of the Cabarrus County Law Enforcement Association.
Mr. Rogers is survived by a brother, John C. Rogers of Charlotte; sister, Lucille Reynolds of Alexandria, VA; nieces and nephews, Debra R. Baker and husband, Ronnie, Johnna Spry and husband, Kenny, Betsy Rogers, William Baucom and wife, Judy, Joan Peterson and husband, Dennis.
Mr. Rogers was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Rogers.
Memorials may be made to Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church, 501 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC 28204.
Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington, Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Boulevard.

M. EILEEN SENDZUK
JAN. 26, 1927 - JUNE 15, 1999
RALEIGH - M. Eileen Sendzuk, 72, of 7312 Stonecliff Drive, Apt. 9, died Tuesday at Rex Hospital.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Surviving are her husband of 49 years, George T. Sendzuk; daughter, Mary Kay Deuser of Raleigh; son, Bryan Sendzuk of New York Mills, NY; sisters, Catherine Connaughton of Raleigh, Rosemary Fitzgibbon of Rochester, NY; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends following the Funeral Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to, St. Joseph Nursing Home, 2535 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13501.
Service by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.

JOHN C. "JIGGS" WATSON
WAKE FOREST - John C. "Jiggs" Watson, 75, of 968 E. Wait Ave., died Tuesday night at Hillside Nursing Center. He was born the son of the late John Clinard and Henretta Morris Watson in Vance County, and was preceded in death by his wife, Clair Roberts Watson, a sister, Lorrene Watson, and a brother-in-law, Jerry Lairson.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: sisters, Christine W. Jeffries and her husband, Billy, Pauline W. Lairson, all of Wake Forest; several loving cousins, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4109 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC 27609.

KATHLEEN HAUGH WESTERFIELD
CARY - Kathleen Haugh Westerfield, 55, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999.
Mrs. Kathleen Westerfield was born in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from Mundelein College.
She was a teacher in the Spring Branch School District in Texas and thereafter a homemaker for 29 years. She was loved and cherished by all family and friends who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, George Sumner; sons, Daniel and wife, Emily of Greensboro, Stephen and Michael of Cary; daughter, Ann and husband, Stephen Rotr of Durham; one grandchild, Joshua Alex Westerfield of Greensboro; brothers, Martin Hugh of Charlotte, Stephen Haugh of Crystal Lake, Ill., and James Hawk of Corrinth, Texas; mother, LaVerne Haugh of Charlotte and a host of other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Apex, NC on Saturday, June 19, 1999 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the American Breast Cancer Society, local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association or Missions for the Poor, St. Andrew Catholic Church, Apex, NC.

CHARLES A. WILKINSON
RALEIGH - Charles Arnold Wilkinson passed away at Springmoor in Raleigh on June 9, 1999.
Mr. Wilkinson was born in Mandan, N.D. on March 27, 1900. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Grace Wilkinson; three brothers, Arthur, Ernest and Archie; two sisters, Maude and Alice. Mr. Wilkinson was predeceased by his wife, Luella Clanton Wilkinson, who passed away in 1970 and his wife, Esther Shreiner Wilkinson, who passed away in 1992.
Mr. Wilkinson lived in Minneapolis, Minn.; Milwaukee, Wis. and Prairie du Chein, Wis. before moving to Springmoor 14 years ago. He was a veteran of World War I. He owned and operated a bakery in Milwaukee for many years. Mr. Wilkinson enjoyed music, especially Dixieland jazz and travel. He was an avid reader, lover of baseball and ardent bridge player.
Mr. Wilkinson is survived by one daughter, Sandra Woolsey and husband, James of Charlotte; stepson, John Schreiner and wife, Heidi of Saint Michael's, MD; stepdaughter, Ruth Boyce of Chapel Hill. He is further survived by seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.
Many friends and family will remember Mr. Wilkinson at a memorial service at the Springmoor auditorium on Saturday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations to the Church of The Good Shepherd, 125 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, N.C. 27611.

ELIZABETH "BETTE" BICKEL
RALEIGH - Elizabeth "Bette" Bickel, 73, died Thursday at Rex Hospital.
Mrs. Bickel was born in Mahanoy City, PA and was a member of Raleigh Mennonite Church. Through her life as a Christian, she devoted herself to her Creator, to her family, and to the service of others. Her love and compassion will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include: husband Donald, son Mark and wife Janet, sons Geoffrey and Peter, and grandchildren Andrew, Brad, and Parks, all of Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6612 Creedmoor Rd., at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 1999.
The family will receive friends to celebrate Bette's life on two occasions, Saturday night, January 30, 1999 at Building Together Ministries, 1116 N. Blount St., between 7 and 9 p.m. and after the memorial service at Asbury UMC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be given to Building Together Ministries, 1116 N. Blount St., Raleigh, NC 27604.

MIRIAM RYAN HOODII
RALEIGH - Miriam Ryan Hood, 83, died Thursday evening, January 28, 1999, at Rex Hospital.
Mrs. Hood's smiling face, genial manner and contagious high spirits graced all who knew her. She made hosts of friends as a volunteer at the NC Museum of Art, Christ Episcopal Church, and Hospice of Wake County, where she gave generously of her time and talent since moving to Raleigh from Boca Raton, Florida in 1987.
Former president of Parkside Bishops Park Condominiums, she was also president of St. Margaret's Guild of Christ Church for over a decade.
With her husband, IBM Executive James DeKalb Hood, she played an active role in the communities of San Jose, California, Boulder, Colorado, Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Manassas, Virginia, where they had lived prior to Mr. Hood's death in 1976.
Survivors include, daughter, Lynn Hood Holtzclaw and husband, Robert of Raleigh; granddaughter, Hilary Holtzclaw Phoebus and husband, Brian of Winston-Salem, and her beloved pets, "grand-dogs" Tippy and Daisy and grand-cat" Mavis.
A funeral service will be held at Christ Church at 11 a.m. Monday, February 1. Interment will follow in the Christ Church Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends in the Christ Church Parlor immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., 4th floor, Raleigh, NC 27605; or to the Christ Church Altar Guild, 120 E. Edenton, St., Raleigh, NC 27601.

RUTH ESTELLE NIPPER
RALEIGH - Ruth Estelle Oates Nipper, of 3330 Friartuck Road, will be Eulogized on Saturday, January 30, 1999.
Ms. Nipper was born in Johnston County, but was a longtime resident of Raleigh.
She is survived by a daughter, Mamie Oates Moore of Goldsboro; two grandchildren, Melody and Donnell Moore; mother, Mamie Lee Oates of Dudley; brothers, Louvester Oates of Goldsboro, Ennis Oates of Wilmington, James Alexander Oates of Philadelphia, PA; sisters, Blondell Oates of Philadelphia, PA, Jacqueline Oates of Dudley, Anthinette O. Hines of Herndon, VA.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Lea Funeral Home, 2500 Poole Road, Raleigh, 231-1000.
