LOUISBURG - Russell Perry Nelms, 74, of Louisburg, died Friday, April 9, 1999 at his home. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday from the Hill King United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens.
Survivors: wife, Mavis Layton Nelms; daughter and son-in-law, Jane N. and W. Edward Barber of Emerald Isle; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen T. and Jackie H. Nelms and Warren E. and Jeannie W. Nelms, all of Louisburg; sister, Helen N. Barham of Wake Forest; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Lancaster Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hill King United Methodist Church, c/o Treasurer Ricky May, 1897 NC Hwy. 39 S., Louisburg, NC 27549.

IMA JEAN TURBYFILL ROWLAND
APEX - Ima Jean Turbyfill Rowland, 79, died Thursday, April 8, 1999. Mrs. Rowland was born March 25, 1920 in Mitchell Co., NC, the daughter of Mallie and Selma Turbyfill.
She was a graduate of Mars Hill College and The Rex Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1944. From 1951-55, she was a nurse for the Atlas Construction Co. Hospital in Casablanca, French Morocco. Mrs. Rowland retired in 1985 as a nursing supervisor at Rex Hospital, where she was known affectionately as "Turby" to many of the doctors and staff. She was a dedicated nurse for over 43 years.
Mrs. Rowland is survived by her husband of 49 years, Robert T. Rowland. Mr. & Mrs. Rowland spent their retirement winters in Clewiston, FL.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with entombment in Montlawn Mausoleum. Friends may visit at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Saturday, 6-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mars Hill College or to Hayes Barton Baptist Church Television Ministry.

MRS. CLEO E. CHINNIS STEWART
WILMINGTON - Mrs. Cleo Elizabeth Chinnis Stewart, died Friday, April 9, 1999 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center. She was born on August 12, 1916 in Leland, daughter of the late William Herbert and Ellen Strickland Chinnis. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Neil Stewart.
Mrs. Stewart was a life time member of First Baptist Church of Leland, where she joined in 1928.
Surviving are her daughter, Carol McDuffy and husband, Nathan of Wilmington; son, James Neil (Buddy) Stewart Jr. and wife, Carol of Raleigh; eight grandchildren, Joe McDuffy and wife, Linda, Mark McDuffy and wife, Nancy, all of Wilmington, Neil Stewart and wife, Ginnie of Youngsville, Michele Gottlier and husband, Marc, Ashley Watson and husband, Joel, Chuck Watson and wife, Traci, and Kevin Watson, all of Raleigh; 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 12, 1999 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel by Rev. Chris Hall. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 4-5 p.m. Sunday at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, N.C. 28401, or First Baptist Church of Leland Building Fund, 517 Village Road, Leland, N.C. 28451.

DR. HERBERT WALTER WEY
BOONE - Dr. Herbert Walter Wey, 84, of 366 Howards Knob Road, Boone, retired Educator and Chancellor of Appalachian State University, died Friday morning, April 9, 1999, at his residence.
He was a native of Terre Haute, IN, born June 1, 1914. Dr. Wey was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jean Jensen Wey of the home; four daughters, Buddy Wetli of Miami, FL, Linda Jean Leach and husband, Ralph B. of Goldsboro, Mary Jane Cruser and husband, Roger of Peebles, OH, Brenda Wey and husband, John Fillinger of Boone; two brothers, Woodie Wey and Willie Wey, both of Cory, IN; sisters, Agnes Rector of Cory, IN, Betty Hector of Daytona Beach, FL; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
Funeral service for Dr. Herbert W. Way will be conducted Monday morning at 10 o'clock at Grace Lutheran Church, officiated by Pastor Tim Smith. Entombment will follow in the Montlawn Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Appalachian State University for the Herbert W. Wey Scholarship, Boone, NC 28608, or to Grace Lutheran Church, 115 East King Street, Boone, NC 28607.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3-5 o'clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

THOMAS HOLLAND WOODARD
GARNER - Thomas Holland Woodard, 78, of Fairfax, VA, and formerly of Garner, NC died Wednesday, April 7, 1999. Mr. Woodard was born in Selma, NC to the late Ernest V. and Effie Holland Woodard. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lanie Gunter Woodard. Mr. Woodard was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College. Prior to his retirement in 1981, Mr. Woodard was a chemist for US Dept. of the Interior Geological Survey. Mr. Woodard served in the US Army during WWII and was a life long musician.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh. Burial will follow in the Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
Surviving are his two daughters, Linda Tatum and husband W. Barnes Tatum of Greensboro, NC and Sallie Dail Tiso and husband Bruce Tiso of Burke, VA; brother-in-law, Hardin Gunter of Durham, NC; four grandsons, Chris Wilson, Hal Wilson, Ben Tiso, and Tom Tiso.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to the Burke United Methodist Church, 6200 Burke Centre Parkway, Burke, VA 22015.

ALMA GOFF ANDREWS
RALEIGH - Alma Goff Andrews, 71, of 207 E. Drewry Lane, Raleigh, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at her home after an extended illness. She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-two years, J. Jack Andrews and daughters, Jackie A. Gooch and husband Robert of Wilmington and Janet A. Johnson and husband Charles of Cary. She is also survived by nieces Ann Johnson of Tarboro, Faye Royal of Florida, Myrtle Yourchick of Nevada, nephews Donald Goff of Conetoe, Jay Goff of Pinetops as well as her lifetime friend, Alice Langley of Fountain.
Memorial service at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 1999 at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27605 or The Memorial Garden Fund of Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 4921 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27609.

LUTHER "LUKE" HUGGINS JR.
RALEIGH - Luther "Luke" Monroe Huggins Jr., 74, of Raleigh, died Monday, March 15, 1999 in Rex Hospital.
Mr. Huggins was born in Hoke County on October 19, 1924, the son of the late Luther M. and Hattie Cope Huggins.
He served and was decorated in World War II as part of the 101st Screaming Eagles Paratrooper Unit. Luther went to the Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton and received a business degree. He trained horses at his family stable, taught riding for a number of years at Vardell Hall in Red Springs and retired after 21 years of being the director of Equitation at Meredith College in Raleigh. He was active in numerous horse related societies and had taught beginning horsemanship at Wake Technical Community College.
Surviving are one sister, Margaret H. Brock of Morganton; two brothers, Jack M. Huggins Sr. and wife, Margaret of Anderson, S.C., James C. Huggins and wife, Loretta of Fayetteville; three nephews and five nieces; friend and companion of 20 years, Georgea L. White of Raleigh and her son, George T. Norris and wife Jeanie F. of Raleigh.
Memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 1999 in the Mitchell Funeral Home, Saint Mary's Street Chapel, by Rev. J.P. Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the N.C. State College of Veterinary Medicine, 4700 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, N.C. 27606 or to the ASPCA, 503 Highway 70 East, Garner, N.C. 27529 or your favorite horse charity.

CLEVELAND LANE
RALEIGH - Cleveland Lane, 93, of 1920 Boaz Road, deceased Saturday, March 13, 1999 at Rex Hospital. Funeral service 12-noon Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Knightdale. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: daughters, Ann Adams (Ernest), Lottie L. Hodge (Arthur), Linda L. Woods (James); sons, Manley Lane, Herman Lane (Mary) all of Raleigh; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; one God niece, Jovita Lee; one adopted granddaughter, Princess Clemons; special niece, Maurice Mials; one sister-in-law, Bethel Lane; one brother-in-law, James K. Hinton, all of Raleigh; a host of other relatives and friends.

LILLIE S. BALLENTINE
RALEIGH - Lillie G. Ballentine, of 16 S. Pettigrew Street, died Friday. Funeral service 1 p.m. Wednesday, First Baptist Church. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: sisters, Helen L. Degraff of Washington, DC, Carrie Garnett of New York; brother, Julious Shumate of Washington, DC.

CLAUDE AUSTIN BARBER
WAKE FOREST - Claude Austin Barber, 87, of 1716 Forestville Road, died Monday, March 15, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital. He was born in Indiana and was the son of the late Irwin and Ella Powell Barber. He was a retired mechanic and was a member of the masonic lodge.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 1999 in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home.
Mr. Barber is survived by his wife, Grace E. Barber; daughter, Peggy B. Clark of Wake Forest; son, Robert S. Barber of Harrisonburg, VA; brother, Earl Barber of Las Vegas, NV; four grandchildren.
A service of Bright Funeral Home and Cremation.

HENRY "PETE" C. BASS
ELM CITY - Henry "Pete" Curtis Bass, 87, owner/operator of HC Bass Store for 33 years, died March 15, 1999. Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday, Peoples Chapel. Burial, Peoples Chapel Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Margaret Williams Bass; daughters, Hilda Bussell of Williamston, Sharon Bridgers and Kathy Fardy, both of Wilson, Glenda Bass of Goldsboro; sons, Wilton Bass of Pikevile, Kenneth "Bud" Bass of New Bern, Randall "Butch" Bass of Newport; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

ROBERT WILLIAM BENSON
CLAYTON - Robert William Benson, 56, of 3646 Barber Mill Rd., died Monday. Funeral services 2:00 p.m. Thursday in McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens. Rev. Brantley Stevens and Rev. Tony Massey officiating.
He is survived by: wife, Linda P. Benson of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Melissa Benson of Willow Spring, Scott and Doretta Benson of Goldsboro; four step-children; two grandchildren; mother, Maloa Benson of Clayton; brothers, Wayne Benson of Burke, VA, Linwood Benson of Grand Prairie, TX; sister, Linda Wheeler of Clayton. He was preceded in death by his father, Melza (Freck)Benson.
The family will receive friends, 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

SARAH JANE BIERLEY
APEX - Sarah Jane Thomas Bierley, 52, died March 14 following a 10 year battle with cancer. Born in Williamsport, PA the daughter of the late Harry E. and Jessie K. Thomas.
She is survived by her husband, Winfred B. Bierley Jr.; daughters, Kimberley Bierley of New York City, Christina Bierley of Apex; brothers, Bruce L. Thomas of Lancaster, SC, Robert J. Thomas of Columbia, SC.
Sarah was manager of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory for Pathology Associates International (PAI) in Durham. She had been with PAI for over 10 years where she was involved in examination of virus preparations using a method she developed. Her procedure is now recommended under the FDA's Points to Consider for production of monoclonal antibodies and cell lines. Prior, she worked at the NCSU School of Veterinary Medicine, Duke University Medical Center and Clemson University. She obtained her M.S. and B.S. degrees from Clemson University. Her favorite hobby for the past 15 years was Western Square Dancing.
Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund of the Prince of Peace Episcopal Church in care of the Treasurer 1513 Bullfinch Lane, Apex, NC 27502 or Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., 4th Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

DOLLY L. FLOYD
NORLINA - Dolly L. Floyd, 53, of 309 Elm Street, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at Duke University Medical Center. She was born in West Virginia and was the daughter of the late Fred and Lexie Merle Gregory Cogar. She received an Associate of Applied Science Degree from Vance-Granville Community College in 1997 and was a Senior Resource Analyst of Information Systems at Revlon.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock, Friday, March 19, 1999 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest.
Mrs. Floyd is survived by her husband, John Floyd; son, Tommy Floyd and wife, Edna of Wake Forest, Randy Floyd of Louisburg, Ernie Floyd of Norfolk, VA and Travis Floyd of South Hill, VA; sisters, Scharlott Dunlap and Judy McGary of Good Hope, WV; brother, Gary Cogar of Lost Creek, WV; grandchildren, Haley Floyd of Wake Forest, Joey Conley and Jimmy Conley of Norfolk, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Triangle Division, 3901 Computer Drive, Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27609.
The family will receive friends at Bright Funeral Home from 7-8:30 Thursday evening and at the home of Tommy and Edna Floyd, 5720 Barham Siding Road, Wake Forest at other times.

GORDON LEIGH FUTCH SR.
BURGAW - Gordon Leigh Futch, Sr., 80, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at Huntington Health Care. Mr. Futch was born April 14, 1918, in Pender County and was the son of the late Clyde Futch Sr. and Marie Pridgen Futch.
He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Elsie Pendergrass Futch and his sister, Inez F. Vick.
A life long resident and retired merchant of Burgaw, Mr. Futch served 18 years on the Burgaw Town Board. He also represented Pender County on the Lower Cape Fear Water & Sewer Authority for six years.
Surviving: son, Leigh Futch and wife, Wanda of Burgaw; daughter, Josette F. Wessell and husband, Edward of Raleigh; grandchildren, Mark and Kathryn Wessell, Michael Wessell, Lenora Futch and Eric Futch; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Clyde "Tom" Futch Jr. and Gregg Futch, both of Wilmington; sister, Faye F. Hamilton of Wilmington.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home chapel with the Reverend Dr. Ray Mendenhall and the Reverend Jack Dail officiating. Burial will follow in Burgaw Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home.
