AHOSKIE - A memorial service honoring Jack William Futrell will be held Saturday, April 3, 1999 at Ahoskie Cemetery, beginning at 11 a.m.

LT. TONYA D. GILLIKIN
ENFIELD - Lt. Tonya Doreen Gillikin, 30, died Monday.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, at Glad Tidings Church in Morehead City with the Rev. Don Wolford officiating. Burial will follow in the Otway Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Lt. Gillikin was employed with the Enfield Police Dept. for three years and was previously employed with the Beaufort Police Dept. for two years.
She is survived by her mother and step-father, Doreen and Tony Lawrence of Otway; her sister, Deidra Gillikin of Otway; and her maternal grandparents, Tilton and Iona Lawrence of Otway. She was preceded in death by her sister, Tara Gillikin.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday at the Enfield Baptist Church and from 6-8 p.m., Thursday at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Lt. Tonya Gillikin Trust Fund, Account # 0100147800, c/o Centura Bank, 100 North Railroad St., Enfield, NC 27823, or at any Centura Bank.

BESSIE H. GRUBB
RALEIGH - Bessie H. Grubb, 94 a resident of Rex Convalescent Center, Raleigh died Monday, March 15, 1999 at Rex Hospital. A Native of West Chester, PA she moved to Raleigh in 1993 to be near her family. She lived most of her life in West Chester, PA where she assisted her husband in his business. She later worked at the West Chester University. She was very active in volunteer and in 1980 was named volunteer of the year in the West Chester area.
She is survived by two sons, Donald H. Grubb and his wife Jean of Raleigh, and H. Richard Grubb and his wife Dolores of Fredericksburg, Texas, and by 11 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in West Chester, PA. Memorials may be made to the Rex Convalescent Care Center, 4210 Lake Boone Trail, Raleigh, NC 27607.

JOSEPH A. "ALEX" LAUGHTER
NOV. 6, 1965 - MARCH 12, 1999
WAKE FOREST - Joseph Alexander "Alex" Laughter, 33, of 5812 Barham Siding Road, Wake Forest, died Friday, March 12, 1999.
He was the son of Joseph Albert Laughter and Mabel Young Laughter (Dr.) of Greenville. He attended J.H. Rose High School in Greenville and graduated from the Institute of Audio Research, New York, N.Y.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Tara Charleen Laughter of Wake Forest; maternal aunt, Myrtle Smith and daughter, Phyllis of Hendersonville; paternal aunts and uncles include Chris and John Levesque of Downey, Idaho, Nancy and Larry Pitkin of Bethlehem, Pa., Nettie and Rowland Davis of Hendersonville, Betty Laughter of Tryon, James Laughter of Saluda.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at Wilkerson Funeral Home, Greenville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joseph Alexander Laughter Scholarship Fund, Institute of Audio Research, 64 University Place, New York, N.Y. 10003.

MARJORIE FERRELL LEDFORD
WENDELL - Marjorie Ferrell Ledford, 84, of 9 Ledford Lane, died at her home early Tuesday morning, March 16, 1999 after an extended illness. Mrs. Ledford was a homemaker and a seamstress. Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 1999 at Wendell Baptist Church. Burial, Greenmount Cemetery.
Surviving: sons, Luther E. Ledford Jr. and his wife, Shirley of Pink Hill, Joe Lynn Ledford and his wife, Julia of Wendell, R. Keith Ledford and his wife, Nancy of Raleigh; seven grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; sister, Laura Ferrell Liles of Wendell.
Mrs. Ledford was preceded in death by her husband, Luther E. Ledford Sr. March 17, 1987.
The family will remain at the home on 9 Ledford Lane for visitation of relatives and friends.

MARGARET O. LEWIS
WINSTON-SALEM - Margaret Overton Lewis, 75, a resident of St. Paul's Place, formerly of High Point, died Monday evening, March 15, 1999, in the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born September 8, 1923, in Clinton, N.C., a daughter of Preston F. Lewis and Nell Blackburn Lewis. Ms. Lewis was a graduate of East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. While a resident of High Point she was a Decorator with Tomlinson Furniture Company of High Point and was owner of Tally Ho Gift Shop. Ms. Lewis was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. After Margaret moved to Winston-Salem in 1982, she was involved with her church, with art, and with her neighborhood. Margaret felt a deep reverence for God's Creation and appreciated natural beauty. At St. Paul's Church she participated in the Altar Guild's Flower Committee, on the Earth Stewardship Committee, and in the St. Francis Fellowship, the ministry developing the gardens and worship on the church grounds. She was a member of the West End Garden Club, designed decorations for homes on the West End House Tour, and for several years maintained the garden in front of the YWCA. She appreciated the power of words. She studied writing at Chapel Hill and served on the board of the "Crescent Review", a literary magazine. At St. Paul's she was a lay leader and coordinated the workshop services sponsored by the Francis Fellowship in the outdoor chapel. Margaret was also an artist an an art teacher. She was an art instructor for the YWCA, as well as a volunteer for Project New Start, a program for female offenders and inmate families at the YWCA. After she became ill, she was a faithful member of the cancer support group at St. Paul's and helped to provide art therapy to cancer survivors. Margaret also loved her neighborhood, her church community, and her friends in the West End. She served on the board of the Summit Apartments where she lived and also on the board of the West End Association.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Pegram Helton and husband Ephraim of Danville, KY; a son, Chauncey M. Pegram, III and his wife Kimberly of Greensboro; four grandchildren, Chelsea Elyse Pegram, Chauncey Miles Pegram, Megan Woods Helton and Patrick Gardner Helton. She was preceded in death by sisters, Elizabeth Lewis Mims and Kathryn Lewis Frederick, and brother, Preston F. Lewis, Jr.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 18, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with Rev. Donald P. Goodheart officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the assembly hall of the church.
The family request memorials be directed to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101; to the Francis Fellowship at St. Paul's; to Project New Start at the YWCA, 1201 Glade Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101; or to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27013.
J.C. Green & Sons, Thomasville will handle arrangements.

MYRA JOYNER MITCHINER
RALEIGH - Myra Joyner Mitchiner, died Saturday, March 13, 1999. She was born in Rocky Mount, on November 14, 1913, and later graduated from Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College in Wilson. Mrs. Mitchiner also held a Master's Degree in Social Work from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is the former Director of North Carolina Public Assistance Programs, administered by the North Carolina Department of Social Services. Besides being a charter member of St. Paul's Christian Church, she was an elder and the first choir director of the church. Mrs. Mitchiner had a great love of music, and an avid reader, and an animal lover.
She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Dail of Goldsboro; niece, Nancy Dail Taylor of Mt. Olive; nephew, Glen Dail of Annapolis, MD; half-sister, Nancy Viverette of Rocky Mount. For many years, Mrs. Mitchiner shared a home with Mrs. Idonna Russell.
A memorial service for Ms. Mitchiner will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m., at St. Paul's Christian Church, 3331 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27612.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Fund of St. Paul's Christian Church.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

MARY L. "LINDA" NORFORD
RALEIGH - Mary L. "Linda" Norford, 75, a long time resident of Raleigh, died on Tuesday, March 16, 1999 in King George, Virginia. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Norford worked with the Governor's Office of Citizen Affairs.
Surviving is her son, David A. Norford and her daughter-in-law Donna J. Norford, of King George. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Lisa Carr of Sterling, VA, Michelle Schiro of Centreville, VA, John Norford of Chantilly, VA, and their spouses; and Michael Norford of King George. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted at 12 noon, Friday, March 19 in the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, 27603. The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 2217 Princess Anne St. #002-1, Fredericksburg, VA 22401.

RUTH IRENE NEWTON PHILLIPS
RALEIGH - Ruth Irene Newton Phillips, 72, of 12 Gilbert Avenue died Monday, March 15, 1999. Mrs. Phillips was born in Wake County to the late Martin Van Buron and Katie Irene Simpson Newton. Prior to retirement, Mrs. Phillips was a Parts Clerk for Sir Walter Chevrolet. Her husband Melvin Vernon Phillips preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving is her daughter, Martha Rose Whitehead and husband Steve of Raleigh; two sons, Van Phillips and wife Betsy of Raleigh and Steve Phillips and wife Debbie of Fuquay-Varina; sister, Ginger Newton and friend Lee Smith of Durham; three grandchildren, Joshua, Adam, and Michael; and her canine companion Bandit.
The family will be receiving friends Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC.
Flowers are welcome or donations made to the Caraleigh Baptist Church Building Fund, 1400 Green St., Raleigh, NC 27603.

ALBERT T. SLAUGHTER
ANGIER - Albert T. Slaughter, 72, of Route 1, Coats, retired farmer and former owner of Ma's Grill, and a veteran of WWII, died Monday. Funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday, chapel of Overby-Johnson Funeral Home, Elder Fred Williams officiating. Burial will be at Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Rt. 2, Angier.
Surviving: wife, Virginia W. Slaughter; daughters, Patricia S. Knust of Richmond, VA, Sylvia Faircloth and Debbie Johnson, both of Angier; son, Dorsey Lee Slaughter of Angier; sister, Mattie Lewis of Angier; five grandchildren, Karen Faircloth, Matthew Thomas Slaughter, Amber Elaine Johnson and Christopher Ryan Slaughter, all of Angier, Kenneth F. Knust, Jr. of Richmond, VA.

JOHN F. VARGAS
RALEIGH - John F. Vargas, of Raleigh died Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital following a brief illness. He was 88 years old.
Mr. Vargas was born in 1910 in Taunton, Massachusetts to the late Joseph F. Vargas and Julia Jacintha Vargas. In 1934, Mr. Vargas married the late Esther Mae Pearce of Pilot, NC, daughter of the late Sisco Moye and William David Pearce. He graduated from the Manhattan State School of Nursing also in 1934, and pursued a career in nursing until 1941 when he joined the Merchant Marine as a radio officer and served in World War II until late 1944. Mr. Vargas was active in many civic, military and professional organizations. Mr. Vargas was a member of the American Radio Relay League, distinguished member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association and member of the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society. In 1964 Mr. Vargas was made a Master Mason in Friendship Lodge in Park Ridge, NJ. In 1987 he demitted to Hiram Lodge No. 40 in Raleigh and was admitted to the Shrine in 1989. John was very active in the Eighth Air Force Historical Society. He was a director in the North Carolina Chapter for the past several years. His presence will be sorely missed by his fellow veterans.
Family will receive relatives and friends Thursday, March 18, 1999 4-6 p.m. until the funeral service.

Inurnment Service: 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 19, 1999 at the Pearce Family Cemetery, Clyde Pearce Road, Pilot, NC with military honors.
Mr. Vargas is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Vargas Parsons (Mrs. Steven Parsons) of Raleigh; a son, William F.. Vargas of Amherst, NH; a granddaughter, Nora Julia Vargas of Amherst, NH; and numerous nieces and nephews in the Connecticut and North Carolina area.

OBDULIA P. ZAPATA
CARY - Obdulia Perillo Zapata age 91 of Cary, NC and a native of Lacoruna Galicia, Spain died Monday, March 15, 1999 at Western Wake Hospital due to an extended illness.
A memorial service will be held today Wednesday March 17, 1999 at 2 p.m. in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Father David Fitzgerald. The family will receive friends from 12-2 p.m. at Apex Funeral Home, 511 West Williams St. Hwy 55 in Apex, NC.
Survivors are: three sons, Michael Zapata Jr. and wife Susan of Cary, NC, John Zapata and wife Nora of Nesconsett, NY, Harry Zapata and wife Margarita of Middletown, NJ; twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are entrusted with Apex Funeral Home.

JOHN JOSEPH LEICHT
RALEIGH - John Joseph Leicht, 54, of 7305 Tanbark Way, died suddenly on Wednesday at Raleigh Community Hospital. He was a marketing manager for Nortel Communications. Mr. Leicht enjoyed traveling, especially going to the beach. He also liked electronics and video taping family and friends. He was a fun loving husband and father.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Saint Raphael Catholic Church where he was a member.
Surviving are his wife, Joanne J. Leicht; daughters, Chris Leicht of Baltimore, MD, Cathy, Beth and Carrie Leicht, all of Raleigh; parents, Richard and Anna Leicht of Rochester, NY; brother, Ed Leicht of Rochester, NY.
The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road (876-6900) from 7-9 p.m. on Friday with a prayer service at 8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 3901 Computer Drive, Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27609.

WILLIS ELVIS MOODY JR.
ATLANTA, GA - Willis Elvis Moody, Jr., of Atlanta, GA, born March 30, 1924 in Raleigh, NC to Inez Marie (McDade) Moody and Willis Elvis Moody died on December 21, 1998 after a lingering illness.
Willis attended Murphy Grammar School and Hugh Morson High School in Raleigh. He received a BS, MS and PhD (1956) from North Carolina State University in Ceramic Engineering. He did post graduate work at Iowa State University and the University of California at Berkeley. More recently (1979) he received his JD in law from Woodrow Wilson College, Atlanta, GA and became a member of the bar in Georgia.
During World War II (1942-46) Willis served in the USAAF as navigator on B-24's in the European theater and received the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He retired from the Air Force Reserves as Lt. Colonel.
After the MS in Ceramic Engineering, Willis began his professional career with Auto-Lite Company (1949-50) and Laboratory Equipment Corporation (1950-51). He returned to NCSU for the PhD in Ceramic Engineering. During these studies, he spent summers (1954 and 1955) in the Oak Ridge National Laboratories and with 3M Company (1956). He was Associate Professor (1956-61) and Professor (1961-89) of Ceramic Engineering in the Georgia Institute of Technology. He authored and coauthored numerous scientific publications and patents.
Willis was active in the following professional societies: he joined the American Ceramic Society in 1949 and was Trustee (1965-68); Treasurer (1961-63) and Director (1962-63) of the Southeast Section of the American Ceramic Society; Secretary (1960-61), Vice President (1961-62), President Elect (1962-63), and President (1963-64) of the Ceramic Educational Council; Secretary-treasurer (1977-78) and President (1980) of the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers; member of the Ceramic Engineers Committee (1960-61), member of the Materials Committee (1961-65), Vice Chairman (1970-71), and Chairman (1971-72) of the Materials Division of the American Society of Engineers; Chairman of the Finance Committee (1963-65), Chairman of the 1970 meeting, and Councilor (1969-71) of the Clay Minerals Society; Governor of the American Association of Engineering Society (1979-81). Willis made major contributions to NICE by promoting continuing education programs. He was elected a Fellow (1964) to the American Ceramic Society. He was a member of Sigma Xi, Sigma Pi Sigma and Tau Beta Pi.
Willis is survived by his former wife, Mary Susan (McAfee) Moody, and mother of his children Susan M. Green, Houston, TX, Michael T. Moody (deceased), Atlanta, GA, Peggy M. Gardner, Atlanta, GA, Willis Elvis Moody, III, MD, Abington, VA, and William Scott Moody, Atlanta, GA. He had eight grandchildren. Willis had three sisters, Louise M. Benton, Raleigh, NC, Mildred M. Croom, Knightdale, NC, and Nancy M. Seltmann (deceased), Raleigh, NC, and two brothers, David S. Moody, Durham, NC and Lewis E. Moody, Raleigh, NC.
Interment of his ashes is in Historic Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, NC. The family will hold a memorial service for friends and family at the grave site on Sunday, April 18, 1999 at 10 a.m.
