MARGARET J. MURRAY
CHAPEL HILL - Mrs. Margaret Jamieson Murray of Chapel Hill died Tuesday at the UNC Hospitals. She was 70.
A native of Scotland, Mrs. Murray came to live in Kearny, NJ in 1952 and married in 1953. Mr. and Mrs. Murray retired to North Carolina in 1987 where she was a homemaker.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Margaret Devenney Jamieson. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sarah Jamieson.
A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Phillip Murray; a daughter, Margaret Scocozza of Blairstown, NJ; and three sons, Brian Murray of Durham, Robert Murray of Seattle, WA, and David Murray of Andover, NJ; six grandchildren, Heather, Erin, Sam, Will, Ian, and Luke.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Walker's Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the church.

MARIA RICE
RALEIGH - Maria Hinton Rice, of 2912 Bannf Court, died Sunday. Funeral service 1 p.m. Friday at Elevation Baptist Church. Entombment, Raleigh Memorial Park.
Surviving: sisters, Florence H. Royster of Raleigh, Irene H. Milburn of Philadelphia; brother, James W. Hinton of Raleigh; many favorite nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins and church friends.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service; all other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Royster (sister), 1320 Carp Road, Raleigh.

ANGELA S. RIETVELT
JAN. 26, 1935-FEB. 16, 1999
RALEIGH - Angela S. Rietvelt, 64, of Raleigh, formerly of Springfield, MA, died Tuesday.
Funeral 11 a.m. Friday at Turner Memorial Baptist Church. Burial, Maplewood Cemetery, Clayton.
She was the widow of Arie Rietvelt.
Surviving: daughters, Connie Clark of Hendersonville, Angela LaFrance of Agawam, MA; son, Steve Rietvelt of Raleigh; sisters, Irene Desmond and Durine Uiterwijk; brothers, Barry Dieters and John Dieters; grandchildren, Scott Rietvelt, Rachel Lanoie, Katelynne Lanoie, Lucas Clark, Marcus Clark and Michael Patrick Clark.
The family will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, 7-9 p.m. today with a prayer service at 8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Arthritis Foundation.

BENJAMIN RODIN
DURHAM - Benjamin Rodin, 90, of 103 Forest Oaks Drive, Durham, NC, died February 16, following an extended illness.
He was the benefactor of the Benjamin and Mark G. Rodin Scholarship at the University of North Carolina for students in the College of Arts & Sciences, School of Education and School of Journalism. In addition he was the founder of the American Academy of Medical Administrators, an International Organization of healthcare administrators, which was organized in 1957.
Mr. Rodin graduated from UNC in 1933 and received his master's degree in Education from New York University a year later. Following service in the United States Navy during World War II, Mr. Rodin spent 32 years as a hospital administrator for the United States Veteran's Administration, then was public health administrators for the town of Framingham, Massachusetts and associate administrator at Worcester State Hospital, Worcester, Ma.
Mr. Rodin also taught Hospital Administration at Boston University and classes at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York.
Surviving are a son, Mark G. Rodin of Durham; a daughter-in-law, Karen also of Durham and two sisters, Ann Finley and Pearl Kurs of Forest Hills, New York.
Graveside service will be conducted at 10:45 a.m. Friday in Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be mailed to Judea Reform Congregation, 1995 West Cornwallis Rd., Durham, NC 27705; or to the Benjamin and Mark G. Rodin Scholarship Fund in care of the UNC Development Office, Chapel Hill, NC.
Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

JOSEPHINE JOHNSON SLEDGE
RICH SQUARE - Josephine Johnson Sledge, 96, of the 100 block of North Main Street, died February 16, 1999 in Greenville Villa & Rehabilitation Center, Greenville.
Mrs. Sledge was born in North Hampton County, and was a member of Rich Square United Methodist Church. She attended Greensboro College and William and Mary College and was a former school teacher in Roanoke Rapids.
Survivors include a daughter, Jo Ann Tully of Bristol, Va.; a son, John B. Sledge Jr. of Kill Devil Hills; a brother, Lloyd Johnson of Dickens, TX; seven grandchildren, John Sledge III of Burlington, Robert Sledge of Raleigh, William Sledge of Farmville, Joseph Sledge of Kill Devil Hills, Thomas Tully and Greg Tully, both of Bristol, Va.; and Ruthie Henson; a great-grandchild, Andrew Sledge of Raleigh and a nephew, Dell W. Millar of Seneca, S.C.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, February 19, 1999 in Cedar Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Sally Plowman.
The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Rich Square from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday and will assemble at the cemetery at 12:50 p.m. Friday, prior to service.
Garrett Funeral Home, Rich Square is handling arrangements.

MABEL S. SMITH
CARY - Mabel S. Smith, 89, of Cary, died Wednesday, February 17, 1999. Mrs. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church of Cary, where she was a former kindergarden teacher and pianist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Ray Smith and her son, Robert Graham Smith. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Cary. The burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughters, Margaret Elizabeth "Betty" Sanders of Morrisville and Anne S. Cooper of Cary; son, E.R. Smith Jr. of Polk City, Fl., James H. Smith of Raleigh; grandchildren, Robert L. Smith of Raleigh, Dale Smith of Cary, Robin Callahan of Siler City, J.H. Smith Jr. of Raleigh, Louis Smith of Polk City, Fl. and Carol Jensen of Holly Springs; great-grandchildren, Marshal Thomas of Cary, Jennifer L. Smith of Raleigh, Courtney and Dustin Callahan, both of Siler City; Robert Jensen Jr. of Raleigh and Roger Jensen of Morrisville; great-great-grandchildren, Alexander Thomas of Cary and Chelsea Jensen of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

R. MARSHALL STEWART
GREENVILLE - Rev. R. Marshall Stewart, 66, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999, at Duke Medical Center.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Friday at the Black Jack Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Rev. Stewart, a native of Ninety Six, S.C., had been a resident of the Black Jack community in Pitt County for a total of 28 years; 1965-1976 and 1981-1999. He was a graduate of Ninety Six High School in S.C. and Holmes Bible College of Greenville, S.C., where he earned a B.A. degree in Religious Studies. He later received a Master's Degree from Carter Bible College and Theological Seminary. He taught theology at Carter Bible College and Theological Seminary for five years and at Heritage Bible College for 17 years.
Rev. Stewart had pastored in several eastern N.C. communities including Rocky Mount, Dublin, Dunn and Greenville. He was presently the Pastor of the Black Jack Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. He was an avid gardener and had an extensive library.
Survivors: wife, Annie Laura Brown Stewart; two sons, R. Marshall Stewart, Jr. and wife Candace of Raleigh and Chris Stewart and wife Nancy of Kenansville, NC; three grandchildren, John Marshall Stewart of Raleigh, Brian Christian Stewart, Jr. and Noah Williamson Stewart, both of Kenansville; and two sisters, Mattie Butler of SC and Bessie Leopard of Virginia.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home Thursday night.

FOY MARIE WILLIAMS THORNTON
SMITHFIELD - Foy Marie Williams Thornton, 90, formerly of Kinston, died Wednesday.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Thornton.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Selma Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are her brothers, Charles L. Williams and Norwood Williams, both of Clayton, Lee Curtis Williams of Smithfield and Leon Williams of Selma; sisters, Nelda Barnes and Beatrice Powell, both of Clayton, Ethel Childers of Claremont and Lottie Nichols of Sanford and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Friday, at Parrish Funeral Home, just prior to the service.

RAYMOND A. TURNAGE
ERWIN - Raymond Allen Turnage, 87, died Tuesday afternoon at Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Wilda May Pope, and his wife, Mary Messer Turnage. On his spear time, he made small fishing boats. He also worked in Erwin Cotton Mills for the past 56 years. He was also the last Charter Member of the Erwin Church of God.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at the Erwin Church of God, with Rev. Currie Parker officiating and burial will follow in Erwin Memorial Park.
He is survived by two sons, Donald Raymond Turnage of Garner, Joe Allen Turnage of Lillington; three daughters, Wanda T. Barefoot of Falcon, Doris T. Ennis of Coats, Elgie T. Beasley of Angier; 2 brothers, Woodrow Turnage of Erwin, Fred Turnage of Richmond, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. at Price Funeral Home Thursday and at other times at the home, 501 South 16th St., Erwin.

JAMES THOMAS WILKINS JR.
CLAYTON - James Thomas Wilkins Jr., 82, died Monday evening. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma with burial following in Oakland Heights Cemetery in Smithfield.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Seate Wilkins; one grandson.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday night from 7-9.

WILLIAM M. WREN
SILER CITY - William M. Wren,<\n > 92, of 14150 US 64 West, Siler City, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999 in Chatham Hospital. Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 19, 1999 at First United Methodist Church and interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Conducted by Rev. Thomas Sweeley and Rev. Travis Owen. Mr. Wren was a lifelong resident of Siler City. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated from the University of Alabama where he played on the University tennis team and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, and served with the Naval Air Corps during World War II including combat duty in the Pacific aboard the Carrier USS Bennington. Mr. Wren was the former CEO of Siler City Mills, Inc., and President of Wren Industries, Inc. He was also past President of Chatham Poultry Farms, Inc. and Wren Foundation, Inc. He served as President of The Chatham Bank and upon its merger with First Union National Bank he served as a Director in Charlotte and Siler City from 1946-1968 and as an Executive Committee Member of First Union Corporation from 1968-1976. He was named an Honorary Director for Life for his outstanding service. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church where he served for many years on the Administrative Board. He also supported The Children's Home Society as a member of the Board of Directors and served on the Chatham Hospital Board of Trustees. Mr. Wren was a member of the Siler City Rotary Club since 1952 and named a Paul Harris Fellow. An avid golfer, Mr. Wren served as President of the Siler City Country Club where he won the club championship. He was also the first golfer to tee off on the original course on Thanksgiving Day in 1958.
Mr. Wren was preceded in death by his son, William Galloway Wren and is survived by his wife of fifty years, Marion Galloway Wren.
Surviving also is his daughter, Margaret Wren de St. Aubin and husband, Denis de St. Aubin, along with three grandsons, Chip Farrar, Wren Farrar and Denis de St. Aubin Jr. of Siler City.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday evening at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City.

EDDIE DEAN
THOUSAND OAKS, CA - Eddie Dean, one of the last of the singing cowboys of the silver screen, died March 4 in Thousand Oaks, California from complications of pneumonia. He was 91.
Dean was famous among B-Western stars as a "clean-living', straight-shootin" cowboy, a role model for youngsters at Saturday matinees in the 1940s through mid-1950s. With his death and the deaths of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers in 1998, Monte Hale and Rex Allen become the surviving members of an elite group who could sing and strum a guitar at a full gallop.
Dean was born in Posey, Texas on July 9, 1907, the youngest of seven boys and two girls. He was exposed to country music at an early age and could read music by the time he was six. He began his career as a singing cowboy in the mid-40s, galloping through 60 features on his faithful steeds, White Cloud, Copper and Flash.
Off-screen, Dean was a successful composer, with over 200 songs to his credit, including "I Dreamed of a Hillbilly Heaven" and "One Has My Name, The Other Has My Heart". He was a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was a tireless supporter of the Red Cross and entertained U.S. troops all over the world, including five trips to Viet Nam. Dean's death came 16 days before he was to be honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame.
Dean is survived by his wife, Lorene, whom he always called Dearest, son, Eddie Dean, Jr. and daughter, Donna Lee, many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Dean will be featured in a 13-part CBS Special on singing cowboys and classic country artists scheduled to begin March 31.

STEPHEN GLENN JR.
RALEIGH - Stephen Glenn Jr., 72, of Raleigh, died Tuesday at Cary Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Glenn was the former owner of the Chicken-in-the Box and a retired School Bus Mechanic.
He is survived by his wife of 9 years, Bettie Harris Glenn of Raleigh; three daughters, Lydia, Glacia, and Cecelia and a son, Craven Glenn, all of Raleigh; a stepson, Joseph F. Hunter of Abilene, Texas; a sister, Juanita of Raleigh and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday, March 13, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. at Watts Chapel Baptist Church, 3703 Tyron Road, by Dr. Frank B. Weaver.
The Family will receive friends from 12:30-1:00, before the service at the church.
Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to the Watts Chapel Building Fund, 3703 Tyron Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27606.
