CLAYTON - J. Alice Suddith, 82, died Thursday July 29, 1999. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, VA. Arrangements by McLaurin Funeral Home.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Jane Suddith of Clayton; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara J. and Frank Cooper of New Castle, PA; sister, Anne Perry of Englewood, FL; grandchildren, Tammy Harden, Lindy Wersching, Sherrie Burns, Robin Markham, Betsy Williams, Missy Cooper; great-grandchildren, Kenny Edwards, Caleb Hardin, Joseph Suddith, Carrie-Anne Wersching, Kayla Burns.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136 or the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30329. Family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

DOUGLAS MANN WESTER
WILSON - Douglas Mann Wester, 84, died Thursday, July 29, 1999. He was born in Franklin County, October 13, 1914, son of the late Crocker Thomas and Viola Ball Wester. Mr. Wester was a member of Marsh Swamp Free Will Baptist Church of Wilson, a past member of the Loyal Order of the Moose of Rocky Mount and Wilson. He was preceded in death by his first wife Lucille Beddingfield Wester.
Surviving: wife, Pattie Flowers Wester of the home; daughter, Janie Wester Thompson of Rocky Mount; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Douglas and Rosie Wester of Faison; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Joan F. and Morris Lamm of Rock Ridge; five grandchildren, Tommy Boulden, Amy B. Sugg, Renee W. Tucker, Roni Beth Wester, Reid Wester; three step-grandchildren, Wendy L. Davis, Kristie Lamm, and Sharon Lamm; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Sugg, Emily Sugg, Lindi Prevost; two step-great-grandchildren, Jeanna Davis and Shannon Davis; sister, Anne Leigh McKinney of Maryland.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, August 1, 1999 at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount, with Rev. Ray Wells officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

KARL P. WILLIAMS
GLEN CARBON, IL - Karl P. Williams, 93, of Glen Carbon, Il and Chapel Hill, N.C., died at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 1999 at his apartment in Eden Village.
He was born September 5, 1905 in Salemburg, N.C., a son of the late Charlie Williams and Annie Sikes Williams.
He married Gladys Sutton Williams, September 17, 1928, she preceded him in death. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Deane Huntley and husband, David of Edwardsville, five grandchildren, D. Kimsey Huntley, Dean S. Huntley, Mark W. Huntley and wife, Lorraine of Edwardsville, Mary Lynn Gayler and husband Michael of Houston, Texas and Matthew Huntley and wife, Lori of Clearwater, Florida and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Williams was associated with Julian's College Shop in Chapel Hill, North Carolina for 40 years and although he officially retired in 1973, he continued to perform duties with the firm through his 92nd year. He was recipient of the Rotary Club's Paul Harris Award in 1997 and was honored by the University of North Carolina as a Commencement Marshal and honorary member of the Class of 1998. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chapel Hill, N.C.
Funeral arrangements are pending and burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Memorials may be directed to the Salemburg Baptist Church in Salemburg, North Carolina.
Walker Funeral Home, Chapel Hill, N.C., is in charge of local arrangements.

PERCY W. WOODRUFF JR.
GREENSBORO - Percy W. Woodruff, Jr., 81, died Friday, July 30, 1999 at Community General Hospital in Thomasville. A service of remembrance will be held 10 a.m. Monday, August 2, at the First Lutheran Church. Mr. Woodruff was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a graduate of NC State College of Textiles. Mr. Woodruff was a retired employee in quality control management for Erwin Mills and Burlington Industries.
Mr. Woodruff is survived by his wife, Winifred Losse Woodruff; daughters, Julia W. Wildes of West Linn, OR, Christine W. Jarvis of Six Mile, SC, Nancy W. Minter of Greensboro. He is also survived by his brothers, John T. Woodruff of Wrightsville Beach, NC, David S. Woodruff of Burlington, Kenneth Woodruff of Burlington. Mr. Woodruff has four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday following the service at First Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be made to the Pastor's Discretionary Fund of First Lutheran Church, 3600 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410-4844 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements were made by Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Chapel.

WALTON T. FERRELL SR.
RALEIGH - Walton T. Ferrell Sr., 73, a life-long resident of Raleigh, died Tuesday, August 17, 1999 after a long battle with leukemia.
Walt, a well-known athlete, attended Needham B. Broughton High School, Blue Ridge Prep School and N.C. State University. He was retired from the Raleigh Fire Department Communication Center.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church and the Everette Miller Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the North Raleigh Optimist Club where he spent many hours working with youth, especially the underprivileged.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Carmen Henderson Ferrell; three sons, Walton T. Ferrell Jr. of Washington, D.C., Steve Ferrell and wife, Susan of Raleigh, NC, and Larry Ferrell and wife, Judy of Columbus, Ga.; four brothers, Grady Ferrell and wife, Mary, C.D Ferrell, Carl Ferrell and wife, Gladys all of Raleigh, and Gene Ferrell of Powder Springs, Ga.; one sister, Yvonne Gill and husband, T.J. of Wilmington, NC; two grandsons, Johnny and William Ferrell; and two great-granddaughters, Amanda and Lauren Ferrell. He was preceded in death by a brother, Percy Ferrell of Wilson, NC.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 19, 1999 in the First Baptist Church by Dr. J. Daniel Day. Interment will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh.
Flowers will be accepted, but the family would ask that those wishing to do so, make memorials to the First Baptist Church, 99 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27603 or to the Walton T. Ferrell Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o N. Raleigh Optimist Club, P.O. Box 58381, Raleigh, N.C. 27658.

CAROLINE EGERTON POWELL
ELON COLLEGE - Miss Caroline Egerton Powell, 92, of 309 East Haggard Avenue, Elon College, North Carolina, died Tuesday, August 17, 1999, at the Alamance Regional Medical Center.
Born February 20, 1907, in Warren County, she was the daughter of Thomas Edward Powell, Sr., and Clara Bobbitt Powell. She earned her A.B. degree in English from Elon College in 1928, and her master's degree in zoology from Duke University in 1938.
Miss Powell taught biology at Alexander Wilson High School in Hawfields from 1928 to 1930. In 1930, she moved to Salisbury, North Carolina, where she was head of the science department at Boyden High School until 1942. From 1942 to mid 1944 she taught biology at Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh.
In August 1944, she joined the staff of Carolina Biological Supply Company in Burlington, as Head of the Accounts Receivable Department, and Head of the Mailing List Department. In 1947 she became Corporate Secretary, a position she held until her death. She served as a member of the Board of Directors from 1980 to 1992. Miss Powell was a staff member of Carolina Biological Supply Company for 55 years.
Miss Powell is listed in the Marquis Who's Who of American Women, and has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Alamance County. She also served as a member of the Women's Division of the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce. Miss Powell was a member of the Elon College Community Church of the United Church of Christ, serving as a deacon.
Miss Powell is survived by her sister-in-law, Annabell C. Powell of Burlington; five nieces, Clara Elizabeth Lee Harvey of Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania, Sophia Powell Wolfe of Odenton, MD, Jo Anne Lee Jeffries of Durham, Carolyn Lee Wollaston of Naperville, IL, Dr. Annabelle Council (Beth) Powell, II of Burlington; six nephews, Dr. Thomas Edward Powell, III, John Sharpe Powell, Esquire, Dr. James Bobbitt Powell, Mr. William Council Powell, Dr. Samuel Christopher Powell of Burlington, Joseph Eugene Powell of Denton, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Mary Brantley Powell, Clara Powell Lee, Josephine Powell Newell; brother, Dr. Thomas Edward Powell, Jr.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening, and other times at home at Willeli, 950 East Lake Drive, May's Lake, Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 19, 1999 at the Elon College Community Church by the Reverend William M. Jeffries and Reverend Dr. Kenneth Tyson. Burial will be in the Magnolia Cemetery in Elon College.
Memorials may be made to the Elon College Community Church, Box 625, Elon College, North Carolina 27244.

BENJAMIN N. WALTERS
JAN 16, 1940 - AUG. 16, 1999
GARNER - Major Benjamin Newton Walters, 59, of 606 Dupree Street, died at home Monday. He was a retired officer of The Salvation Army and a member of the Rotary Club, Kiwanis, Lions Club, and the Masonic Lodge. He was also the Fire Chaplain of Atlanta 1971 to 1974 and Water Department Chaplain 1972 to 1974.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Salvation Army in Raleigh. Burial will be Monday at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Ga.
Surviving are his wife, Major Carolyn a. Walters; daughters, Monica Kay Moore and her husband, Douglas of Laurens, SC, Rhonda Faye Walters of Atlanta, GA; sons, Cadet Benjamin Newton Walters, Jr., and his wife, Rhonda and Charles Macon Walters and his wife, Ginnifer, all of Atlanta; his mother, Margaret A. Walters of Garner; grandchildren, Kyle, Becky, Suzanne and Cheyenne Moore of Laurens, SC and Bailey, Ben, III and Raegan Walters of Atlanta, GA and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles M. Walters; sisters, Lurline Alice Stephenson; brothers, Charles Macon Walters, Jr. and Lewis Elwin Walters.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 27584, Raleigh, N.C. 27611.

JAMES "JIM" WOMBLE
RALEIGH - James "Jim" Earl Womble, the son of Ruth Womble and the late Ernest Womble, passed away after a valiant battle with cancer of Tuesday, August 17, 1999. He never gave up and was surrounded with family when he left peacefully to be with his Maker.
Jim was a dedicated and beloved husband to Teresa Carroll Womble and loving father to his daughter, Regan Womble and son, Matt Womble, both of Raleigh. Jim was also loved by his sister and brother-in-law, JoAnn and Horace Stimson of Pilot Mountain; aunts, Edna Earle Womble and Mattie Mae Tudor, both of Raleigh; nieces and husbands, Kathy and Wayne Redding and Laurie and Robert Thomas; great-niece and nephews, Allyson Wright and Nathan and Alex Redding and his cousin and "big brother" Bryant Tudor of Washington, DC. Jim was also a beloved son-in-law, to Rose and Milton Carroll of Raleigh; brother-in-law, Pam and Joel Watson of Garner, and "Umple Jimmy" to Emma Watson of Garner.
Jim was Sr. Vice President of Precision Walls in Raleigh where he worked for 30 years. The employees of PWI were a second family to Jim. Jim's dedication and loyalty to PWI will forever be a cornerstone to the successes of PWI. His contributions and friendship will be missed by each employee in a very special way.
Jim also leaves behind countless friends that he made over the years at Broughton High School, NCSU, YMCA, on the golf course or just simply by walking around the neighborhood. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who were fortunate to have called him a friend.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Salisbury Street at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
The family will receive friends in Memorial Hall following the service. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to either Hospice of Wake County or the Jimmy V Foundation.
Arrangements are provided by Bryan-Lee Funeral Home of Garner. "I have fought the fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

EDITH G. AUSTIN
NEW BERN - Edith McCall Greene Austin, 86, died Tuesday.
She was president of District #21 of North Carolina Nurses Association, President of Eastern District of Nursing Home Association, Charter President of the Pilot Club, 1955-56 and selected as "Woman of the Week" during this period, and elected State President of the North Carolina Nursing Home Association in April 1960.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m. at the Lakeside Chapel of Greenleaf Memorial Park.

LYMAN LEE BARNES
WENDELL - Lyman Lee Barnes, 55, of 7651 Applewhite Road, died Tuesday, August 17, 1999 at his home. Mr. Barnes was a Correctional Officer at Central Prison with the N.C. Department of Corrections. Memorial service 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel.
Surviving: wife, Joyce Earp Barnes; children, Wendy Eason of Zebulon, Ginger Driver and McCray Earp, both of Selma; brother, William Barnes of Rocky Mount; sister, Lou Keene of Wilson; three grandchildren.
The family will receive relatives and friends following the Memorial Service from 8-9 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wilson Gospel Assembly Church, 802 Industrial Avenue, Wilson, NC 27893 or to Hospice of Wake County, Inc, 1300 St. Mary's Street, Fourth Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

ELIZABETH BERGER
CARY - Elizabeth Randolph Preston Allan Berger died on Monday, August 16, 1999 at Glenaire.
Mrs. Berger was born November 5, 1913, the daughter of the late Dr. William Allan and Louisa Purcell Allan. She graduated from Charlotte Central High School and attended St. Catherines School in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Berger was a 1935 graduate of Smith College and completed her graduate work at Mt. Holyoke College. During the 1940s, she served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy, where she was an air navigator, being one of the first twelve waves ever graduated from Air Navigation School. She taught at the Weems System of Navigation in Annapolis, Md., where she met her late husband, J. William Berger. Mrs. Berger performed regularly as an actress with the Charlotte Little Theater, the Mint Museum Drama Guild and appeared in many television commercials. She was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Charlotte, Cary Presbyterian Church and Cary American Legion Post 67.
Mrs. Berger is survived by a sister, Anna Brooke Allan of Chapel Hill; four children, Anne B. Salisbury of Cary, Elizabeth B. Upchurch of Apex, Jacob W. Berger and Louisa B. Cofer, both of Charlotte; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
A service celebrating the life of Mrs. Berger will be held Thursday, August 19, 1999 at 1 p.m. at Cary Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends after the service and at other times at the Salisbury home.
Memorials may be made to Cary Presbyterian Church, Pastor's Discretionary Fund, 614 Griffis St., Cary, N.C. 27511 or the Glenaire Foundation, 200 W. Cornwall Road, Cary, N.C. 27511.

EDWARD EARL "EDDIE" CAPRELL
YOUNGSVILLE - Edward Earl "Eddie" Caprell, 62, died Monday.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Thursday, 8/19/99, Bright Funeral Home Chapel, Wake Forest. Burial will follow in the Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and all other times at home on 264 Holden-Young Rd.

LESLIE G. COOK
ZEBULON - Leslie Graves Cook, 85, of The Fountains At The Albemarle, Tarboro, formerly of Bunn, died Tuesday. A memorial service will be held Thursday, 4 p.m., at Poplar Spring Baptist Church, 89 Brantleytown Road, Zebulon. The service will be conducted by Rev. Steven Wade and Rev. Tom Eldridge.
Mr. Cook graduated from Wake Forest College in 1936. He was retired from Aetna Insurance Co. with 38 years of service and N.C. Reinsurance Facility with 13 years of service. He was predeceased by his parents, Mark and Kiva Cook of Bunn and a sister, Ester Stallings of Spring Hope.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Jean Rowland Cook; daughters, Bobbie Johnson of North Myrtle Beach, SC and her husband, Buddy, Linda Mullen of Zebulon and her husband, Maurice, Carol Akerman of Wilson and her husband, John; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; twin sister, Sadie McCarter of Columbus, Ohio.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Building Fund or The Lions Club, Pilot, NC 27597.
