RAYE C. DAWSON
DENVER, CO - Raye C. Dawson, 87, of 1112 Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount, died in her sleep Thursday, September 30, 1999, in Denver, Colorado.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, October 5, in Pine View Cemetery, Rocky Mount, with Rev. Tucker Burnette, pastor of the Red Oak Baptist Church officiating. She was the widow of Benjamin T. Dawson, Jr., and a lifelong homemaker. Mrs. Dawson is survived by several nieces and nephews both locally and out of state.
Arrangements by Bowling Funeral Home.

ROSALIE RIVES DOWDY
MOREHEAD CITY - Rosalie Rives Dowdy, 94, of Morehead City, died Monday, October 4, 1999. A native of Chatham County, Mrs. Dowdy was born October 28, 1904, to the late William Edward Rives and Ethel Hadley Brafford Rives.
Mrs. Dowdy was graduated from East Carolina Teacher's College with an A.B. in English in 1929 and from the University of Michigan with an M.A. in English in 1950. She taught English in the Carteret County schools for 42 years. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Dowdy survived her late husband Rudolph Francis Dowdy who died in 1940 and her daughter, Nancy Rives Dowdy, who died in 1935. She is survived by her sisters, Zona Rives Hoaglin of Greensboro, Mildred Rives Kistler of Pleasant Garden and Phoebe Rives Bender of Hot Springs, Arkansas; many admiring nieces and nephews and her devoted cat, "Grayboy."
Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bay View Cemetery. The Rev. John H. Grayson, associate rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will officiate.
The family will receive friends at home following the service.
Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to West Carteret High School Education Fund, 4700 Country Club Road, Morehead City, NC 28557.

MELVIN A. FAUR
WILLOW Springs - Melvin Allen Faur, 39, of Willow Spring, died Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at Wake Medical Center after a brief illness.
Burial service was held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Camanche, IA on Saturday, October 2, 1999.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, October 9, 1999 at 10 a.m., St. Joseph Catholic Church, Raleigh.
Mel Faur was born August, 15, 1960 in Savannah, IL, to Jacque and Alice Faur. He graduated from Central Community High School in DeWitt, IA, in 1978.
He married Madonna Green , August 28, 1987 at Sts. Phillip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound, IA. He was employed at Gregory Poole Equipment Company in Raleigh, as a generator start-up technician. He enjoyed sports and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye's fan.
Survivors include his wife, daughter, Carrie; son, Austin; his parents of DeWitt, IA; brother Kelvin of Moline, IL.

STEPHEN C. FENN
RALEIGH - Stephen C. Fenn, 79, of Raleigh (formerly of Norway, Maine) died Friday, October 1, 1999 at Wake Medical Center.
Mr. Fenn was born June 13, 1920 in New London, CT, son of the late Stephen and Bessie Fenn. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Vivian A. Fenn.
He is survived by two sons, 1st Sgt. Thomas Fenn, U.S. Army, Ret. of Ft. Collins, CO and Stephen V. and Maria Fenn of Raleigh, NC; three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside service at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at Raleigh Memorial Park.

NORMA E. GARDNER
PITTSBORO - Norma E. Gardner, 72, of Fearrington Village, Pittsboro, died Sunday at U.N.C. Hospitals.
A native of Canton, OH she was a graduate of Bowling Green State University.
She is survived by her husband, Donald J. Gardner; a son, Mark D. Gardner of Atlanta, GA and two grandchildren.
A memorial service and interment will be at a later date in New Canaan, CT.
Memorials may be made to the U.N.C. Medical Foundation, c/o Dr. Wesley Fowler, UNC OB-GYN #7570, Chapel Hill, NC 27599.
Arrangements are with Walker's Funeral Home, Chapel Hill.

SEAN J. JONES
RALEIGH - Sean Jason Jones, 25, of 112 Kirkwood Place, Rocky Mount, died on Sunday, October 3, 1999. Memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, 1999 at Englewood Presbyterian Church, Rocky Mount with Rev. Drew Clark officiating. The family will receive friends at 112 Kirkwood Place, Rocky Mount.
A memorial and wake service will be conducted on Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at the Haywood Funeral Home Chapel, 2415 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, 4-6 p.m.
Sean is survived by his mother, Karen Jones of Rocky Mount; father, Edmond V. Jones of Kissimmie, Fla.; brothers, Dan D. Jones of Kissimmie, Fla., Patrick A. Jones of Raleigh; maternal grandmother, Veda Fay Ehmann of Rocky Mount; stepfather, Richard Rose of Rocky Mount; several relatives of Texas; a host of other relatives and friends.
Arrangements by Stokes Mortuary, Inc., 207 Albermarle Avenue, Rocky Mount, N.C. 27801.

HENRIETTE LOEHFELM
APEX - Henriette Loehfelm died Sunday, October 3, 1999 at the age of 85. She is survived by her son Gerard; daughter-in-law Beth and granddaughter Brenda of Apex; eldest son, Fred, of Mahopac, NY, son Peter of Seattle, WA; daughters Katherine Pfadt of Staten Island, NY, Henriette Klauser of Edmonton, WA, Mary Cox of Woodinville, WA, and eight other grandchildren.
Henriette was a member of the Carmelite Order of Lay Sisters, and a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Church of Apex.
Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, 8 p.m. at St. Andrew the Apostle Church. Friends may visit the Church from 6:30-7:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Rd., Apex, NC 27502.
Arrangements by Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh.

RUBELLE E. PERKINS
OCT. 18, 1904-OCT. 4, 1999
WENDELL - Rubelle Evans Perkins, of 233 Todd Street, died Monday morning at Raleigh Community Hospital. She was the widow of John Cecil Perkins, who died on October 4, 1991. She was born in Greenville, NC, the daughter of the late Sallie Hardy and Roy Tull Evans. She was predeceased by a son, James Cecil Perkins.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at the Wendell Christian Church. Inurnment in Greenmount Cemetery.
Surviving son and daughter-in-law, Edward T. Perkins and Nan Phipps Perkins of Burlington; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Perkins Wall of Wilson; grandchildren, Tabb Perkins of Wilson, Bradley Perkins of Lebanon, MO, Elliott Perkins of Duluth, GA, Laura Perkins Catoe and Molly Perkins Harrison both of Nags Head, and Edward T. Perkins, Jr. of Greensboro; 10 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wendell Christian Church, Living Endowment Fund, or the Hurricane Relief Fund, P.O. Box 874, Wendell, NC 27591.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home, 211 W. Third St., Wendell, other times at 233 Todd St., Wendell.

MICHAEL LEE PRUITT
MOSHEIM, TN - Michael Lee Pruitt, 50, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999. He was a member of Hartmans Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors: mother, Launa Pruitt; sons, M. Anthony Pruitt and Donovon L. Pruitt; daughter-in-law, Kristy Pruitt; grandchildren, Jamey Pruitt, Lorrie Pruitt, and Haden Pruitt; two uncles; three aunts; several cousins; several special friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vester Lee Pruitt and a half sister, Patsy Brown.
Funeral 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, Kiser Funeral chapel. Interment 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, Hartmans Chapel Cemetery with Rev. James Parham and Rev. Millard C. Taylor officiating.
Pallbearers: Steve Albright, Leroy Smith, Glen Livingston, Ric Gullatta, Scott Legg, Edward Seay.
Honorary pallbearers: Louis Fincher, Andrew Fincher, John Dority, Louis Debusk, Orgil Bible, Leonard Bible, Billy Pruitt, James Seay, and the men of Hartmans Chapel.
The body is at Kiser Funeral Home where the family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
It is requested that friends and family members meet at the funeral home on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

BETTY STALLINGS TUNNELL
RALEIGH - Mrs. Betty Chamblee Stallings Tunnell of 2600 Oberlin Road died October 3, 1999. She was born in Rocky Mount, NC, the daughter of Joseph Sumner Stallings and Nancy Underhill Stallings. She was the widow of H. Frank Tunnell, Jr. She has lived the majority of her life in Raleigh.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Tunnell Lyday (Mrs. Russell) of Raleigh; granddaughter Nancy Underhill Lyday Addison of Atlanta; grandson Russell O. Lyday, III of Denver, CO; five great-grandchildren, John Bennett Addison and Laura-Douglass Addison, Rachel Maureen Lyday, Alexander Tunnell Lyday, and Daniel Alan Lyday.
Mrs. Tunnell was a member of The First Baptist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, the Magna Charta Dames, and The Royal Order of the Garter.
Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church, 99 N. Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary's Street on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 4-6 p.m.
Graveside service will be held at Montlawn Memorial Park on Wednesday, October 6 at 1 p.m.
Arrangements are by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street.

SYLVIA BAKER YORK
RALEIGH - Sylvia Baker York died Sunday, October 3, 1999 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. A Tarboro native, Sylvia was the daughter of the late King David and Callie Owens Baker, both of Edgecombe County.
Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday 11 a.m. at the St. James United Methodist Church, Tarboro with Dr. Ed Gunter officiating. Burial in the Greenwood Cemetery, Tarboro.
Ms. York was a senior loan officer with Crestar Mortgage at the time of her death. Beginning her career as a loan officer with Gibraltor in 1986, she worked for several mortgage companies before joining Crestar. She was one of the most productive and respected loan officers in the Raleigh area as evidenced by the numerous awards and trips she won throughout her career.
In her personal life she was dedicated to her family and a friend to everyone. She was loving, caring and giving and will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors: fiance and caregiver, Jack Manning; son, Michael York, Raleigh; sisters, Jimi Ruth Bartolone, New Jersey and JoAnn Brown, Tarboro; brother, Curtis Baker, Raleigh; eight nieces and seven nephews.
In lieu of flowers gifts to the Sylvia Baker York Scholarship Fund with the Edgecombe Community College Foundation, 2009 W. Wilson St., Tarboro, NC 27886 would be appreciated.
The family will receive friends at Carlisle Funeral Home Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the home of Frank and JoAnn Brown, 1517 Canterbury Rd., Tarboro.

WILLIAM MONROE GEER
CHAPEL HILL - William M. Geer, 84, died March 14, 1999 in Chapel Hill. A long-time Chapel Hill resident and University figure, Mr. Geer taught courses in modern civilization in the History Department from 1947 to 1980. He also served as Director of Student Aid from 1966 until his retirement in 1980. Geer was well known for his dramatic and engaging teaching style and for his provocative opinions on a wide range of issues, especially racial and gender quality and pacifism. He twice won the Tanner Award, the university-wide award for inspirational teaching of undergraduates. Geer had a passion for debate and challenging the opinions of his students, especially those who, like him, had grown up in the traditions of the rural South.
Mr. Geer was born in Jonesville, South Carolina in 1915. He graduated from The Citadel in Charleston, SC in 1935. He taught at West Point during World War II, and later served in the Army reserves, retiring with the rank of Colonel. His graduate work was at Emory University and the University of North Carolina. Geer was involved in many town and university organizations, and was an active member of the Community Church of Chapel Hill from its earliest days.
Geer was committed to giving educational opportunities to all students. He was particularly proud of his part in the establishment of the Johnston Awards Program, the University's largest single source of need-based scholarships; and of his early involvement with the Upward Bound program, a summer program for high school students.
He was married to Elizabeth Dantzler Geer from 1945 until her death in 1975.
He is survived by a daughter, Sarah Geer and husband, Samuel Jackson of McLean, Virginia; daughter, Anne Geer and husband, David Scott of Pittsboro; son, Frederick Geer and wife, Karen of Chapel Hill; six grandchildren, Travis and Ben Jackson, Will and Sarah Scott, and Thomas and Anna Geer; sister, Dorothy Smith of Boca Raton, Florida.
The family asks that memorial donations be made to the scholarship fund established in his honor, the William M. Geer Scholarship Fund, c/o the University Development Office, P.O. Box 309, Chapel Hill NC 27514.
Plans for a memorial service are incomplete at this time.

CLEVELAND LANE
RALEIGH - Cleveland Lane, 93, of 920 Boaz Road, deceased Saturday, March 13, 1999 at Rex Hospital. Funeral service 12-noon Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Knightdale. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: daughters, Ann Adams (Ernest), Lottie L. Hodge (Arthur), Linda L. Woods (James); sons, Manley Lane, Herman Lane (Mary) all of Raleigh; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; one God niece, Jovita Lee; one adopted granddaughter, Princess Clemons; special niece, Maurice Mials; one sister-in-law, James K. Hinton, all of Raleigh; a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at Lea Funeral Home Service, (919) 231-1000.
