LAURA BELLE McLEAN
RALEIGH - Laura Belle McLean,of 748 Bunche Drive, died Friday, March 12, 1999 at Rex Hospital. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Cosmopolitan Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday, 7-8 p.m.

LOUIS C. MITCHELL
RALEIGH - Louis Carr Mitchell, 72, died Sunday, March 14, 1999. Mr. Mitchell was born in Ahoskie, and came to Raleigh in 1947. He was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, and was a CPA for over 50 years. Mr. Mitchell was a longtime member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church, and was on the Board of Directors of the Tammy Lynn Center for 27 years.
Surviving are his wife, Myra; daughter, Sandra Southgate and her husband Christopher of Devon, England; sons, Louis C. Mitchell, Jr. and his wife, Darlene of Gastonia, and Robert B. Mitchell and his wife Kim of Raleigh. His first wife, Margaret, died in 1997. Also surviving are stepdaughters, Robin Sieprawski and her husband Jay of Cary, and Glenda Cranwell and her husband Donald of Holly Springs; grandchildren, Jack Copeland and Heather and Stephen Mitchell; step-grandchildren, Brandon and Megan Sieprawski and Brittney, Bryce and Bailey Cranwell; a niece, Carolyn Paul and her children, Julie, Christy and Kendrick, and his beloved pet, Happy. He was well loved by his family and friends, and will be sorely missed.
The funeral will be Wednesday, 2:00 p.m. in Hayes Barton Baptist Church, with interment following in Montlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be in the church parlor from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., before the service.
Flowers are welcomed, or memorials may be made to Tammy Lynn Center, 739 Chappell Dr., Raleigh, NC 27606.

BRENDA L. TUTOR
FUQUAY-VARINA - Brenda L. Tutor, 52, of 119 N. Woodrow St., Fuquay-Varina, died Sunday, March 14, 1999. The loving wife of Ronald P. Tutor of Fuquay-Varina; sister, Patricia C. Graham, of Bradford, Ohio; seven half-sisters; four half-brothers; a very special aunt of, four nieces, Tawanna Delproda, Straelsa Avolos, both of Florida, Carmel Hiex and Lisa Gillian of Ohio; two nephews, Douglas and Walter Hiex of Ohio; five great-nieces and three great-nephews.
You were greatly loved and will be missed by many. Family will receive friends Tuesday evening 7-9 p.m. Sugg Funeral Home.
Funeral service Wednesday 2 p.m. Sugg Funeral Chapel. Burial, Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

ANNIE H. ADER
WINSTON-SALEM - Mrs. Annie Hammack Ader, age 93, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at the home of her daughter in Raleigh, NC. Prior to moving to Raleigh in October 1998, she had lived for over eight years in the Heritage Woods retirement residence in Winston-Salem, NC.
Mrs. Ader was born in Walkertown, NC, on May 4, 1905, to Dr. John Columbus and Ollie Fiddler Hammack. She spent most of her life in the town and married Dr. Ottis L. Ader there in October 1928. Mrs. Ader was preceded in death by her brother, William T. Hammack, in 1934, and by her husband of 67 years in 1996. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt, she is survived by her two daughters, Nancy and husband Charles Ragland, Winston-Salem, and Frances and husband Henry Read, Raleigh; three grandsons, David Ragland, Winston-Salem, John Read, Raleigh, Hank and wife Cammie Read, Walkertown; one great-grandson, Connor Read, Walkertown; and one nephew, Dr. John T. Hammack, Bethesda, MD.
Mrs. Ader was a lifetime member of The Medical Alliance of the Piedmont, and of the North Carolina Medical Society and the American Medical Association Alliances. During her early life, she was an active member of the Walkertown Baptist Church, where she served as pianist and Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Woman's Missionary Society. Mrs. Ader later joined Love's United Methodist Church and was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class and the Clyde Auman Circle.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 17, in the Love's United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Reverends David Calhoun and James F. Weekley. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the homeplace, 3092 Main Street, Walktertown.
Memorials may be made to Love's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8, Walkertown, NC 27051, or to the charity of the donor's choice. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is handling arrangements.

LILLIAN G. BALLENTINE
RALEIGH - Lillian G. Ballentine, of 16 S. Pettigrew Street, died Friday. Funeral service 1 p.m. Wednesday, First Baptist Church. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: sisters, Helen L. Degraff of Washington, DC, Carrie Garnett of New York; brother, Julious Shumate of Washington, DC.
Visitation 12:30-1 p.m. at the church

DANIEL WEBSTER BASTIAN
CARY - Daniel Webster Bastian, husband of May Eckel Bastian, died March 13, 1999.
Mr. Bastian was born in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of Daniel and Carrie Meyer Bastian. He was a resident of Ocean City, NJ until 1995 when he moved to Cary, NC.
Mr. Bastian is survived by several nieces and nephews.
There will be a graveside service at Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, PA on March 24, 1999 at 12-noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Bastian's name to the Activities Department, Cary Health and Rehabilitation Center, 6590 Tryon Road, Cary, NC 27511.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

PERCY L. BATTS
ATLANTIC BEACH - Percy Lee Batts, 71, of 206 W. Dobbs St., Atlantic Beach, formerly of Raleigh, died Saturday, March 13, 1999 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean War and was an Air Traffic Controller for the Federal Aviation Administration for 23 years.
Graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson.
Surviving: wife, Meda Mae Batchelor Batts; son, Jonathan Neal Batts and daughter-in-law, Susan of Knightdale; daughter, Sandra B. Wilder and son-in-law, David of Hubert; grandchildren, Keri Lane Wilder, Ashley Elizabeth Batts, Katherine Lee Batts and Jonathan Neal Batts Jr.; brother, John Henry Batts Jr. of Chocowinity.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Family Funeral Care, 1201 N. Arendell Ave., Zebulon, 919-269-9377 and other times at the home of Jonathan Neal and Susan Batts, 301 Carrington Drive, Knightdale.

LILLIAN BEASLEY
ORANGEBURG, SC - Funeral service for Miss Lillian Beasley who died Monday in Orangeburg, SC, will be Wed., Mar. 17, 1999 at 11 a.m. from the Biggs Chapel, Lumberton, NC.
Surviving: sisters, Mary Elizabeth Phillips of St. Matthews, SC and Winifred McKellar of Charlotte, NC.
Visitation, Tues. 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

DANIEL LEWIS BENNETT
RALEIGH - Daniel Lewis Bennett, 58, of 7921 Castle Lake Court, died Friday in Wake Medical Center, Raleigh. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Dafford Funeral Home chapel, Dunn. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Dunn.
Surviving: wife, Truly Johnson Bennett; daughter, Trudie Ann Bennett of Raleigh; sons, Tyrone Bennett, Gary Bennett, Howard Bennett and Tim Bennett, all of Raleigh, Tyrone Bennett of Tillery; stepson, James H. Johnson of Raleigh; mother, Orlena J. Bennett of Raleigh; sisters, Lena Mae Perry and Geneva B. Williams, both of Raleigh; 25 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

MARLIE L. CHOPLIN
RALEIGH - Marlie Linard Choplin, 73 died Monday at Wake Medical Center, after an extended illness. He was the son of the late James Walter and Lelia Frances Smith Choplin, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He had retired as a general foreman from Westinghouse in Raleigh.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday from the New Hope Baptist Church, in Raleigh. Burial will follow in the Woodland Baptist Church Cemetery in Wake Forest.
Surviving is his wife, Lessie Manning Choplin; sons, Pepper "Dean" Choplin and his wife Heather, of Raleigh; and Marlie Steven Choplin and his wife Carol, of Raleigh, a daughter, Santa Claire Bogdon and her husband Gary, of Orlando, Florida; sisters, Cora Bailey and Billie Lowery both of Wake Forest, Betty Williams of Charlotte, Magdaline Thompson of Raleigh, and Evelyn Cross of Garner, brothers, James Choplin, and Lewis Choplin both of Wake Forest, Elton Choplin, and Joe Choplin, both of Raleigh, six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest.

JOHN C. COTTINGHAM
DILLON, SC - John Colin Cottingham, age 88, died Sunday, March 14, 1999 at St. Eugene Medical Center in Dillon.
Mr. Cottingham was born in Dillon, June 16, 1910 at the location of his present home on South 14th Ave., a son of the late Lila and Jennie McCutchen Cottingham. A 1934 graduate of Duke University, Mr. Cottingham was a retired farmer, teacher and businessman in Dillon where he was active for over 60 years. He was a founding member of the Dillon Lions Club and a charter member and very active in the Pee Dee Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society. In the Genealogical Society he held several positions and he was an award recipient for his extensive research on his Cottingham ancestors who he traced back to their arrival in America in 1635. He was a member of the Dillon County Historical Society, and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where he was recognized as "John the Methodist" in 1989 for being an active member of the choir since 1927. Over the years he participated in the Methodist Men and was a church trustee and participated in numerous other activities in the Church.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at Main Street United Methodist Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery directed by Kannaday's Funeral Home in Dillon.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Felder Cottingham of Dillon; sons, Capt. J. Richard Cottingham, U.S. Navy (ret.) of Raleigh, N.C., Charles F. Cottingham of Atlanta, GA, W. Stephen Cottingham of Santa Cruz, CA; daughters, Beth C. Anderson of Columbia, and Jennie C. DuBose of Newberry; sister, Jennie C. Henry of Orangeburg, and eight grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 401 E. Main Street, Dillon, SC 29536.

AGNES OMESA DUNN
FRANKLINTON - Mrs. Agnes Omesa Dunn passed away Saturday in Raleigh, NC. She was married to the late Dr. Otis Elson Dunn, former pastor of Nazereth First Baptist Church, Asheville, NC. Mrs. Dunn taught in the Asheville City School system and the Buncombe County School system for more than thirty years, from which she retired in the early 80s.
Funeral Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, Franklinton.
Cutchins Funeral Home in Franklinton has been entrusted with all final services.

JAMES M. "BUD" GRAINGER
GREENSBORO - Mr. James Marion "Bud" Grainger, 71, of 114 Pineburr Road, died on Saturday, March 13, 1999. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 1999 in the Fellowship Hall of West Market Street United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.
Born in Kinston, he grew up in Louisburg and was a graduate of Wake Forest College, now Wake Forest University. Since his retirement from Nationwide Insurance Company in 1990, he has spent many happy hours with his grandchildren and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Caruthers Grainger; daughters, Sherrie Grainger Stewart (Mrs. W. Harrison Stewart, Jr.) of Greensboro and Jennie Grainger Winston (Mrs. Ryland Winston, Jr.) of Cornelius; sister, Betty Levering of La Plata, Maryland; five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to West Market Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 870, Greensboro, NC 27402.

TOM HARPER
DURHAM - Mr. Tom Harper, 56, of Brighton Gardens Assisted Living Center in Raleigh, died Monday at his home. Mr. Harper, a Durham native, was the son of the late Thomas Talmadge Harper Sr. and Elsie Harper Barnes Campbell. he was retired from GTE and was also a member of IBEW Local No. 189. Mr. Harper was a member of Homestead Heights Baptist Church.
Surviving are his daughters, Amy Jo Harper and Melissa Anne Harper, both of Raleigh; his former spouse, Bonnie Harper Monson of Durham; sister, Betty H. Francis of Durham; half-sister, Sue McMullen of Live Oak, Fla.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Rev. Burke Raper officiating and Rev. Don Sanders assisting. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday, 7-9 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham and at other times at 3410 Fairway Lane in Treyburn.
The family suggests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to the charity of one's choice.

MARY PATRICK HARRELL
SNOW HILL - Mrs. Mary Patrick "Pat" Holden Harrell, 81, died Monday morning at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Harrell was a life long resident of Greene County, a member of the Cardinal Garden Club and a member of Calvary Memorial United Methodist Church.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Snow Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include, a daughter, Mary Holden Harrell Burke of Burlington; sons, Dr. Jack Harrell of Kinston, Percy H. Harrell, Gene Harrell and George Harrell all of Snow Hill; a sister, Doris Holden Henson of Kinston; ten grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor-Edwards Funeral Home and other times at the residence of George Harrell, 513 Sturbridge Drive, Snow Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boy Scout Troop 74, 119 SE Second St., Snow Hill, NC 28580 or to Calvary Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 445, Snow Hill, NC 28580.

BETSY MYATT HIGGINS
RALEIGH - Betsy Myatt Higgins, 81, of Tampa, Fl., formerly of Raleigh died Sunday. Graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Kay Johnson officiating. Surviving are her daughters, Sally Godbold of Odessa, FL and Stephany Myatt Smith of Pocatello, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her brother W.A. Myatt. Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary's Street (828-4311).
