Though she prized the solitude of her rural home, Mrs. West was a warm and welcoming hostess. A dedicated gardener and farm wife until recent years, her home overflowed with the results of her labors--cut flowers, freshly picked blueberries, pails of pecans, and baskets of eggs. Her kitchen was a busy place, the center of the home where she did her country cooking and served meals. She was noted especially for her pecan pies from her own "fine tuned" recipe. At meals all would linger over talk of politics, local events, and activities of family members. She was an avid reader and kept her home well-stocked with books, magazines, and newspapers. For those family members outside of Lenoir County, she was quick to clip articles from the Kinston Daily Free Press and keep them in touch with their "roots." She and her late husband were both deeply devoted to the education of their children and also saw to it that each received music lessons for the instrument(s) of their choice.
The family expresses their special thanks to her devoted caregivers: Joan Holloway, Shelia Holmes-Graham, Angela Jones, and Laura White.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Lenoir Memorial Hospital Foundation, 100 Airport Road, Kinston, NC 28501, or to the Sand Hill Volunteer Fire Department, 3216 British Road, Kinston, NC 28501 or to the charity of their choice.
