EVELYN "EVIE" GILBERT
SANFORD - Evelyn "Evie" Gilbert, 82, of Carolina Trace, died Monday at Central Carolina Hospital. Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Carl Rush.
Surviving: daughter, Dottie Gilbert of Raleigh.

HULDA A. LANEY
CHAPEL HILL - Hulda Ashburn Laney, a resident of Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill, NC; passed away on January 29, 1999 at the age of 95 years, 8 months and 12 days.
Hulda was born May 17, 1903 near Patagonia and lived in Arizona until 1977. She lived in the same house in Nogales, AZ for seventy years before moving to North Carolina to be near her grandson and his family. She attended high school in Tucson, Arizona.
In 1926, Hulda was married to the late Robert C. Laney, a marriage which was blessed with one daughter, the late Zelda Laney Walter. Surviving Hulda is her grandson Robert Scott Walter and his wife Holly of Raleigh, NC; two great-grandsons, Robert Laney Walter and Steven James Walter; one sister Zelda Ashburn Fraser of Los Angeles, CA and her son-in-law Robert D. Walter of Chapel Hill. In addition, she is survived by her sister-in-law Helen Ashburn, the widow of Marshall Ashburn, a rancher in the San Rafael Valley, AZ and many nieces and nephews and their children.
Hulda will be remembered by her family and friends as a gracious and wonderful lady whose focus was always on the future and the needs of others.

JOHN A. LIKNES
DURHAM - Mr. John Arthur Liknes, 50, of Clayton, died Tuesday morning in Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Liknes was a native of Great Falls, Montana. He moved to Clayton in 1998 as part of his employment with Bayer Corp.
Surviving are his wife, Sissel S. Liknes; daughter, Greta Merrick of Ajo, Arizona; son, Haakon Liknes of Chandler, Arizona; his mother, Anna Golie of Great Falls; brother, George of Great Falls; two sisters, Mildred Kuchera of Farmington, New Mexico, Sissel Goldman of Billings, Montana.
Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home is handling cremation arrangements for the Liknes family.
A memorial service will be held later in Montana.

BETTY JEAN M. MILLER
ENTERPRISE, AL - Mrs. Betty Jean Moore Miller, 67, of 208 Holly Hill Road, Enterprise, AL, formerly of Benson, died Sunday. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel, Benson. Officiating will be Revs. Carl Dixon and Ruben Cason. Burial will follow in Dixon family Cemetery, Benson.
Mrs. Miller was born August 26, 1931, in Johnston County to Nellie Surles Moore of Benson and the late Quester V. Moore, Sr. She was a homemaker.
Survivors: in addition to her mother, include husband, Harry Miller and brother, Q.V. Moore Jr. of Smithfield; several nieces and nephews.
Family will be at Rose & Graham Funeral Home, Benson 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

SALLIE H. PRICE
RALEIGH - Sallie H. Price, of Raleigh, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999. Born in Johnson County on Feb. 9, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Valerie Hines. She was a member of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church.
Funeral service conducted by the Rev. Denise Thorpe will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary's St. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park at Smithfield.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the services.
Surviving are a sister, Mae Stevens of Clayton, and several nieces and nephews.

ROY H. RABON SR.
MARION - Roy H. Rabon Sr., 90, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999 at McDowell Nursing Center. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999 at Westmoreland Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Dr. Robert Davis officiating. Burial will be in the McDowell Memorial Park.
He retired as a carrier in 1973 from the Asheville Citizen-Times, his family has resided in McDowell County since 1947.
Surviving: sons, Larry H. Rabon of Charlotte, Jerry L. Rabon and wife, Carol and daughter, Nicole of Durham, Freddy Rabon and wife, Dawn and children, Joey and Julie of Marion; daughter, Elizabeth S. Wallsmith and husband, Jim and her son, Burr Seaver of Fairfield Glade, TN, Joyce R. DuPalevich and husband, Phil and son, Paul of Jacksonville, NC; grandchildren, Curt Rabon and Ashley R. Cunningham, (Roy Jr.'s children); niece, Betty Yost of Salisbury.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marjorie Harrell Rabon; son, Roy Hayse Rabon Jr.; daughter, Evelyn Jane Rabon.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1998 at Westmoreland Funeral Home.

JAMES DOW SHEPPARD, JR.
RALEIGH - James Dow Sheppard, Jr., 58, formerly of Shelby, NC died Monday, February 1, 1999 at Rex Hospital. The son of Grace Shytle Sheppard and the late James Dow Sheppard, Sr., he was born October 13, 1940 in Greensboro, NC. Jim, as he was known to friends, graduated from Shelby High School in 1958 after which he attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where he studied Journalism. During his career he worked for the Raleigh News and Observer and the High Point Enterprise and was Managing Editor of three North Carolina newspapers; The Lincoln Times in Lincolnton, the Courier-Sun in Rutherfordton and the McDowell News in Marion. He also worked as an Assignment Editor at WRAL-TV in Raleigh and was a Public Information Officer for the State of North Carolina.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Elam Sheppard; daughter, Kelly Ann Sheppard; son, Jason Dow Sheppard; mother, Grace Sheppard; and sister, Mary Ellen Sheppard.
A graveside service will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at their home at 5412 Parkwood Dr.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cleveland County Humane Society, 1010 West Sumter St., Shelby, NC 28150.

KARL REINHARDT MEHLICH
RALEIGH - Karl Reinhardt Mehlich, 58, died Sunday, February 7, 1999. Karl was president of Mehlich Electronics, Inc., where he designed and engineered the Mehlich Multiplex Nurse Call System. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir, served on the church council and various committees. Karl lived life to the fullest. He was a loving husband, father and friend to everyone who knew him. He will be missed by all and our cherished memories of him will be our source of strength. He was born March 10, 1940 in Raleigh to Dr. Adolf and Emma Mehlich. He attended North Carolina State University majoring in electronics.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn U. Mehlich; daughter, Kim M. Jordan and son-in-law, Rev. James W. Jordan of Greensboro; brother, A. Leonhard Mehlich; sister, Elfrieda Turnage; two nieces, three nephews, six great-nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park cemetery.
In addition to flowers, donations may be made in honor of Karl R. Mehlich to: Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2723 Clark Ave., Raleigh, N.C. 27606-7199; or to a charity of one's choice.

EDWARD BURTON ROGERS
RALEIGH - Edward Burton Rogers, 96, of 700 Calloway Drive, died Saturday, February 6, 1999, at his home after a brief illness.
He was a born August 16, 1902, to Louis and Mattie Rogers. A native of Raleigh, Edward grew up in the Oakwood section of Raleigh and attended the old Crosby Garfield School. As a life-long member of Davie Street Presbyterian Church, he served diligently as an Elder and was honored on numerous occasions for his outstanding service and commitment.
He was member of Widow's Son Lodge #4.
For many years, he served as a male nurse to many of Raleigh's "old' patriots.
As the patriarch of the Calloway Drive Community, he was a mentor to his neighbors. He was known throughout for his gardening and his storytelling.
Surviving are his wife of 75 yrs., Mary Maude Rogers; three daughters, Primrose Jackson of Raleigh, Margaret Anderson of Fayetteville and Frances Rogers Sledge of Southern Pines; two nephews, Lonnie and William Rogers of Durham; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; a special daughter-in-law, Mae Frances Rogers; and two special sons-in-law, Eli Anderson and John Sledge.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 1999, at Davie Street Presbyterian Church. Interment, Carolina Biblical Garden.
The family will receive friends at 12:30 p.m. at the church. Public viewing only at Lightner Funeral Home, Wed. from 2-7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, he asked that donations be made to Davie Street Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 300 E. Davie Street, Raleigh, NC 27601.

IRENE B. BOYKIN
WILSON - Irene B. Boykin, 86, died Feb. 8, 1999. She worked at Churchwell's Jewelry Store in Wilson for over 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer Boykin.
Surviving: daughters and son-in-law, Sue B. and Thomas Stott of Wilson, Carol B. Adkison of Charlotte; granddaughter and husband Dr. Suzanne S. and James Holmes of Wilson; grandsons and wives, Alsey and Dianne Stott of Rock Ridge, Paul M. and Robyn ADKISON of Charlotte, Mark C. Adkison of Nashville; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Thomas Stott and Lauren Hope Stott of Rock Ridge.
Visitation 6:30-7:45 Wednesday, Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 US 264 West other times the family will be at 1303 Cloverdale Drive.
Services 8 p.m. Wednesday at Joyner's Funeral Home. Graveside service 10 a.m. Thursday at Maplewood Cemetery with Rev. Michael McHarg officiating.

WILLIAM M. BRUCE
GORDONSVILLE, VA - William Mercer Bruce, died Fri, Feb. 5, 1999 in Jacksonville, FL. Mr. Bruce was born June 9, 1912 to James Garnett Bruce and Hallie Wilkins Bruce in Culpeper, VA.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Scoggins Bruce; one sister, Mary Reed Bruce of Culpeper, VA; two brothers, Dr. James G. Bruce of Orange, VA, Lucien Wilkins Bruce of Hilton Head, SC; two sons, William Mercer Bruce Jr. of Silver Spring, MD, Robert Garnett Bruce of Highland, MD; three grandchildren, Andrea Lynn Bruce of Ellicott City, MD, Garnett Rollins Bruce of Denver, CO, Matthew Merkel Bruce of Montpelier, VA; one great-grandchild, Emmaline Rachel Bruce of Montpelier, VA.
Mr. Bruce held degrees from Virginia Tech at Blacksburg, VA and the University of Georgia at Athens, GA where he received his masters. He spent most of his adult life in service with the U.S. Government in Agricultural Research and Engineering at Beltsville, MD and Tifton, GA.
Family will receive 7-8 p.m. today, Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville, VA.
Funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Christ Episcopal Church in Gordonsville, Va with the Rev. Theodore McConnell officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Culpeper, VA.

EDWIN M. "DINK" FOWLER
MOREHEAD CITY - Edwin M. "Dink" Fowler, 91, died February 8, 1999 at Harborview Towers, Morehead City, NC.
Funeral service Wednesday, February 10, 1999 at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Morehead City with Dr. Milton Gilbert officiating.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Morehead City; moved to Morehead City in 1971 after retiring from Seeman Printery where his father was President.
Survivors: wife, Margaret H. Fowler; daughter, Melba Fowler of Fayetteville; grandson, Jason Edwin Sherrill of Raleigh.
Flowers will be welcomed or memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Morehead City, NC or St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1200 West Cornwallis Rd., Durham, NC 27705.
Family will receive friends following services.

ADA G. FRATZKE
NEW BERN - Ada Goodwin Fratzke, 78, of New Bern, NC died Tuesday at her home. She was a charter member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church.
Funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, New Bern, NC with the Reverend Gary Roth officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Memorial Park, New Bern, NC.
She is survived by her widower Everett Fratzke of the home; a son, Melvin Fratzke of Greenville, NC; three daughters, Barbara Dalleske of Foster City, CA, Anne Coan of Raleigh, NC and Margaret Cahoon of New Bern, NC; three brothers, Ronald Goodwin of Cedar Island, NC, Leonard Goodwin of Sea Level, NC and Dennis Goodwin of Morehead, NC; three sisters, Aileen Olkowski of Havelock, NC, Norma Boyd of Morehead City, NC and June Jones of Harkers Island, NC; two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Cotten Funeral Home, Wednesday, 7-9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew Lutheran Church Debt Reduction, 1605 Neuse Blvd., New Bern, NC 28560.

MIRIAM O. HART
YOUNGSVILLE - Miriam Oakley Hart, 69, of 165 Baron Circle, died Tuesday at Franklin Regional Medical Center, in Louisburg. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home, Wake Forest. Burial will follow in Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery. She was a devoted wife and mother and was a former member of Harris Chapel Baptist Church, and over the years she made countless friends in Clinton, Southport, Orlando FL and Charleston, WV.
Surviving is her husband of 50 years, Ray "R.J." Hart; son, Raymond Hart Jr. of Greenville, NC; daughter, Melody H. Duncan of Raleigh; brother, Selby D. Oakley of Youngsville; grandson, Matthew P. Duncan of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and all other times at the home.
