DOVER -- Estelle Moye Lane, 88, of 10735 Hwy. 55W, Dover, NC Sunday, January 31, 1999. She was a member of Lanes Chapel United Methodist Church and played piano and organ there for over 40 years and a member of United Methodist Women. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lanes Chapel United Methodist Church, Dover. Rev. J.C. Parker and Rev. Dan Powers officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery, Kinston, NC.
Surviving: three sons, Doug Lane of Raleigh, Robert Lane of Raleigh, Sam Lane of Dover; three sisters, Frances Cox of Greenville, Brownie Russell of Greenville, Irma Barwick of Lenoir; seven grandchildren.
GERTRUDE H. MORRIS
FUQUAY-VARINA -- Gertrude Allie Hardy Morris, 82, died Saturday, January 30, 1999 at her home. She was born June 21, 1916 in Halifax County, the daughter of William Robert and Georgeanna Gardner Hardy. She was married to the late Thurman Roy Morris.
She is survived by one son, William Henry Morris of Fuquay-Varina; one daughter, Ann Morris McLean of Bladenboro; four brothers, William A. Hardy of Franklinton, John Hardy, Sam N. Hardy and Lloyd Hardy, all of Nashville; two sisters, Betty Hardy Hale of Rocky Mount, Mary Hardy Benton of Columbia, Mo.; two grandchildren, Jonathan Morris McLean of Chicago, Ill., Mary Elizabeth McLean of Anapolis, Md.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 2, 1999 at Bowling Funeral Home Chapel, Rocky Mount. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Bowling Funeral Home, 661 English Road, Rocky Mount.
RAYMOND R. MULFORD
SMITHFIELD -- Raymond Ross Mulford, age 77 of Smithfield died Saturday following a brief illness. He was the owner of "The Batters Box" in Smithfield, a business which sold baseball cards. Before moving to Smithfield in 1987 he was associated with the printing industry in New York for 36 years. He was active in Little League Baseball in West Hempstead, New York and served as Little League President for several years.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Underwood Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Bruce Taylor, Pastor of Centenary United Methodist Church. Ray is survived by his wife, Esther Davis Mulford and a cousin, Ralph S. Mulford of Levitttown, New York. Memorial contributions may be made to "The Johnston County Room" c/o Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, 305 East Market Street, Smithfield, NC 27577.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home following the memorial service.
MICHELE L. PARRISH
RALEIGH -- Michele Lynn Parrish, 26, of 224 Glascock Street, died Saturday at Wake Medical Center. Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday, Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: mother and father, Bill and Betty Parrish; brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Lynn Parrish of Robbins Air Force Base; nephew, Wyatt Parrish.
Family will receive friends and relatives 7-8:30 p.m. today at Montlawn Funeral Home, Raleigh.
MYRTIE P. PEARCE
LOUISBURG -- Myrtie P. Pearce, 92, of Louisburg, formerly of Rt. 3, Zebulon (Pearces) died Saturday, January 30, 1999 at her home. A lifetime resident of Franklin County, she was a caring daughter of the late Omri and Florence Pearce. She was a devoted wife of Bertis C. Pearce for 50 years before his death in 1987. She was a dedicated member of Pearce Baptist Church for 80 years. She was a loving mother of one daughter, motherly to many and a friend to all.
Surviving are: daughter and son-in-law, Lucretia P. and Matt Buttram of the home; sisters, Maude Pearce, Oma P. Stalling, and Vernie P. Perry all of Zebulon; several sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Melba Pearce, Flora P. Carter, Zoie P. Pearce, Annie Rue P. Bowling, Meldrin, Oris, Wallace and Vaden Pearce.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Pearce Baptist Church. Entombment will follow at 3 p.m. from the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the Lancaster Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Lucretia and Matt Buttram, 2198 N.C. Hwy. 561, Louisburg.
MAE PENDERGRAFT
MAYODAN -- Mrs. Mae Vaughn Pendergraft, 86, of 615 N. Fourth Avenue, died Saturday, January 30, 1999 at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden.
Her funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Ray Funeral Home Chapel in Madison, with burial in the Mayodan Municipal Cemetery.
Mrs. Pendergraft was a lifelong resident of Rockingham County, was a former employee of Washington Mills Company, attended the Mayodan Moravian Church, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard D. Pendergraft; her parents James M. and Sarah Glidewell Vaughn; brothers, John Vaughn, Tom Vaughn, Joe Vaughn, and Bill Vaughn. She is survived by her daughters, Wanna Marley and husband Ronnie of Madison, Carolyn Ferguson and husband Mike of Stoneville, Betty Brown and husband Richard of Wake Forest; brothers, Charles "Chico" Vaughn of Mayodan, Pete Vaughn of Madison, three grandchildren, Dain Marley, Ashley Marley, Vaughn Marley and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Ray Funeral Home and other times at her home.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, or the Leukemia Society.
PHILLIP C. RANSDELL
FUQUAY-VARINA -- Phillip Clifton Ransdell, 67, died Sunday, January 31, 1999.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 2, 1999 at Wake Chapel Christian Church. Burial, Wake Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Ransdell was born September 1, 1931 in Fuquay-Varina to William Garland Ransdell and Elva Clifton Ransdell. He graduated from U.N.C. in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Certified Public Accountant. He received his Doctor of Law Degree from U.N.C. in 1958. From 1958 until 1998 he was a partner in the law firm of Ransdell, Ransdell and Cline.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, William Garland (Buck) Ransdell, Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Page Ransdell; sons, Phillip C. (Cliff) Ransdell and wife, Marty of Fuquay-Varina; Paul A. Ransdell of Cary; daughter, Page R. Gunter and husband, Jeffrey of Kernersville; brother, E. Byron Ransdell and wife, Sara of Raleigh; sister, Martha R. Hicks of Wendell; sister-in-law, Ann S. Ransdell of Raleigh; grandchildren, Martha-Page, Mary-Clifton and Katherine-Parker Ransdell of Fuquay-Varina, Drew, Ethan and Brady Gunter of Kernersville.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday, February 1, 1999 at Thomas Funeral Home.

MISS MARTHA MITCHELL
WAKE FOREST -- Expired Mon., March 1, 1999. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday, March 5, 1999, Friendship Chapel Baptist Church.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one sister, Mary J. Mitchell of Wake Forest; seven nieces; six nephews; many other loving relatives and friends. Dr. Enoch E. Holloway is the officiating pastor.

ADELE M. THOMAS
CHAPEL HILL -- Adele Mounger Thomas of Chapel Hill died Tuesday at Carol Woods. She was 86.
Born in Memphis, TN, Adele grew up in North Mississippi and graduated from the University of Mississippi. She taught grade school, earned a degree in Library Science from Carnegie Tech, and became a librarian. She was a life-long pacifist and civil rights advocate. She moved to Indianapolis, IN in 1950. There she ran her own business and was involved in a number of civic activities including serving for several years as the chief lobbyist for the Indian League of Women Voters. Shortly before Adele and her late husband, Claude A. Thomas retired to Chapel Hill, she received a "key to the city" from the Mayor of Indianapolis.
In Chapel Hill Adele was an active supporter of numerous civic organizations and causes,including the Coalition for Battered Women, the Dispute Settlement Center, Share-a-Home, the Interfaith Council, University United Methodist Church, Planned Parenthood, the Triangle Community Foundation, and All God's Children United Methodist Church ( a recently founded outreach ministry). She was honored for her activities by being named Philanthropist of the Year in 1995 by the National Society for Fund Raising Executives.
She is survived by her daughter, Catilyn Dana of Santa Monica, CA; son, John V. Thomas, his wife, Beth and her granddaughters, Oleta and Jean Marie Thomas, all of Falls of Church, VA.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at the Carol Woods Retirement Community.

RACHEL T. BAREFOOT
NEWTON GROVE -- Mrs. Rachel T. Barefoot, 79, of 7569 Harper House Road, Newton Grove, NC died Tuesday. Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday at Unity Presbyterian Church. Rev. Fred Albright officiating. Burial, Unity Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Surviving:husband, Sherrill Barefoot; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicky and Jerry Barfield of Garner, Pamela and Larry Gregory of Newton Grove; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joey and Sannie Barefoot of Garner, Dale Barefoot of Garner, Ricky and Barbara Barefoot of Newton Grove; three sisters, Allene Dudley of Benson, Christine Langston of Four Oaks, Pennie Lou Barefoot of Newton Grove; two brothers, Roy I. Thornton of Newton Grove, David Thornton of Benson; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Barefoot was preceded in death by a sister, Grace T. Barefoot and a brother, Hubert Thornton.

ROY V. DOUGHTIE
RICH SQUARE -- Mr. Roy Vann Doughtie, 97, died March 2, 1999 at Autumn Care Nursing Home. Mr. Doughtie was a native of Hertford County, a retired farmer and member of Brantleys Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving: son, Alphus "Shorty" Doughtie of Lasker; grandchildren, Tony Doughtie, Robert Doughtie, Michael Doughtie and Mary Ann Barnes; nine great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Marian Dildy, Macie Rhea, Nancy Conner, and George Dunning.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 5, 1999 at Brantleys Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Jimmy Ward and Rev. Robert May. Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery in Ahoskie.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander.

LARAE McCLAIN DUNCAN
RALEIGH -- Larae McClain Duncan, 87, of Raleigh, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at Britthaven of Wrightsville Beach.
Mrs. Duncan was employed with the Raleigh News and Observer and the Raleigh Times from 1952 to 1970.
Graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 5, 1999 at Raleigh Memorial Park.
Mrs. Duncan was preceded in death by her husband, Russell McClain.
Surviving is her son, R. Harold McClain; grandchildren, Kimberly McClain Jones, Russell Harold McClain Jr., and Rosemary McClain Gregory; and three great-grandchildren.

PAYTON EDWARD DUNN SR.
RALEIGH -- Mr. Payton Edward Dunn Sr., 76, of Raleigh, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 in Wake Medical Center.
Mr. Dunn was born in Franklin Co., N.C., on March 2, 1923, the son of the late James Thomas and Mary Blanche Abbott Dunn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Barker Dunn.
Mr. Dunn was retired from the Jefferson-Pilot Life Insurance Company.
Surviving are two sons, Payton Edward Dunn Jr., Ret. Lt. Col., USAF of Vineland, N.J., and William L. Dunn of Louisburg, one daughter, Sara Kathryn Sizemore of Raleigh; one sister, Blanche Overton of Bervard; five grandchildren.
Graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 5, 1999 in Oakwood Cemetery by Rev. William West and Rev. Leon Bizzell.
