RONALD RUDOLPH EVERETT JR.
RALEIGH -- Ronald Rudolph Everett, Jr., 36, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999. Funeral service 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 27 at First Baptist Church in Robersonville. Burial will follow in Martin Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Everett was born on December 3, 1962 to R. Rudolph Everett, Sr. and the late Betty Frances Haislip Everett of Robersonville. Mr. Everett was a member of Robersonville First Baptist Church and attended Bayleaf Baptist Church in Raleigh. He was an Eagle Scout, a graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and received his MBA from Duke University.
He was employed with Mastec where he was Senior Vice President. Some of his professional achievements included Co-owner of Scotts Cleaners, Computerland and a local restaurant in Greenville. He was also a successful real estate investor and President/CEO of Electronic Equipment Analizers of Raleigh.
Survivors, in addition to his father, are his wife Pamela Turner Everett of Raleigh; sons, Ronald Rudolph "Trey" Everett III, age 6, and Christian Taylor Everett, age 5, both of the home; brothers, Matthew Lee Everett of Cary and William Robert "Rob" Everett of Raleigh.
Ron was recently challenged by his oldest son Trey who won first place in the Scout's Pine Box Derby. Ron won this same competition when he was Trey's age.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trey and Taylor Everett Trust Fund, c/o Robersonville First Baptist Church, 208 W. Railroad St., Robersonville, NC 27871.

DR. HENDERSON DAVID MABE, JR.
ERWIN -- Dr. Henderson David Mabe, Jr., beloved Erwin Physician and former state representative, died Wednesday afternoon of a progressive illness in Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. By his side at the time of death was a life-long friend and business partner Robert Morgan, a former U.S. senator.
"He was a great doctor who really cared for people," Mr. Morgan said. "Long before Medicare and Medicaid came along, he was seeing every patient who came through his door whether they had money or not."
Dr. Mabe was born in Kinston in 1924 to the late Henderson D. Mabe Sr. and Pauline Joyner. He attended Grainger High School and went on to attend North Carolina State College. In 1944, Dr. Mabe transferred his studies to Wake Forest College, from which he graduated in 1946. He continued his education at Wake Forest until 1950 when he graduated from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine.
"We graduated together on the same day 49 years ago and we've remained close friends," Mr. Morgan said. "Back in the old days, he was the "big man" on campus - president of the senior class, president of student body."
After completing an internship at Watts Hospital in Durham, Dr. Mabe came to Erwin in 1951, where he began a family medicine practice. In 1963, Dr. Mabe was shipped out to help American troops embroiled in the Korean War. He served as a lieutenant in the Medical Corps. Dr. Mabe returned to the states and spent one term as a member of the House of Representatives in 1963-1964. Dr. Mabe, co-owner with Hoover Adams of the Harnett County News and The Angier Independent, was Erwin's "Man of the Year" in 1975 and received numerous other honors and awards for distinguished medical and community service throughout the years. He was a faithful member of the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Erwin.
He is survived by one sister, Frances Bollett of Jacksonville, FL; several nieces and nephews including Sprunt Mabe of Greenwood, SC, Eugene Mabe, Jr. of New Orleans, Louise Buck of Greenville, Mrs. Monte Sowers of Golden City, MO, Betty Mabe of Annapolis, MD; cousins, Patricia Graham of Wallace, Dan Caison Waters of Roseboro.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephens Episcopal Church with Father Tom Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Erwin Memorial Park.

ARTHUR LEE ROGERS
RALEIGH -- Arthur Lee Rogers was born October 12, 1941 in Raleigh to George and Bessie Rogers. He departed this life on Sunday, March 21, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. An employee of Ready Mixed Concrete, Arthur was preceded in death by his twin brother, Arnold, his younger brother, George, and his daughter, Christine.
Funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, at First Cosmopolitan Baptist Church, 1515 Crosslink Road. Interment to follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens. Viewing will be at 12:00 noon and the service will follow at 12:30 p.m.
Arthur leaves to cherish his memory many friends and loved ones including: Mary Ann Partin, his companion of 14 years; two sons, Arthur LaFonda of Raleigh and Arnold Eugene of New Jersey; his parents, George and Bessie Rogers of Raleigh; three sisters, Barbara Parker (Isiah) of Washington, DC, Iris Rogers Brooks (William "Blake") and Felecia Rogers of Raleigh; his best friend of many years, Harold "Malt" Robinson of Raleigh; six grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, church family from First Church of God and First Cosmopolitan Baptist Church; and friends near and far.
Flowers are accepted or donations can be made to Drug Action of Wake County or Narcotics Anonymous in his name.

IRA OTIS "JIM" WILKERSON JR.
RALEIGH -- I.O. "Jim" Wilkerson Jr., 77, died at Duke Memorial Hospital on Thursday, March 25th, 1999 after a short illness.
He was born on January 6th, 1922 in Roxboro, NC to the late Mr. and Mrs. I.O. Wilkerson. After serving four years in the United States Air Force, he graduated from Wake Forest University in 1948. He entered the hospital administrator internship program at Rex Hospital, where he stayed until 1954. After completing his internship at Rex, he accepted the position of hospital administrator at the Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville, NC. He returned to Raleigh in 1958 and joined the Division of Facility Services of the North Carolina hospital system and eventually became the Director. He also held a position on the Medical Care Commission, and served as it's director, until he retired in May, 1989. After his retirement, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the North Carolina Hospital Association, as well as the Order of the Longleaf Pine.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Bizzell Wilkerson; his children, William Albert Wilkerson II of Raleigh, NC and Mary Ellen Radford of Lawrenceville, GA; his sister, Margaret W. Thurston of Greensboro, NC; and his grandchildren, William Albert Wilkerson III of Raleigh and Emma Katherine Radford of Lawrence, GA.
Visitation will be in the parlor of Edenton Street Methodist Church on Sunday, March 28th, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. until the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. in the main sanctuary. Following the service, interment will be at the Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pipe Organ Fund at Edenton Street Methodist Church, 228 W. Edenton Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.

GEORGE NORMAN ACKER JR.
RALEIGH -- George NormanAcker Jr., 79, of Raleigh, died Friday, March 26, 1999.
Norman was born on February 24, 1920, in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Ella Buzby Acker and George Norman Acker Sr.
He served for four years with the Army Air Corps in India, during World War II. His travels with the Army during the war took him all over the world. He attended the University of Delaware and graduated from Westminster Choir college, Princeton, New Jersey in 1949 with a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in organ. While at Westminster he served as choir director and organist at an Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, New York. He was in the cast of "The Lost Colony" in Manteo for one summer during his summer years.
He came to Raleigh in 1949 and his first job after college was as the first full-time Minister of Music at Hayes Barton Baptist Church (1949-1954). He later served as Minister of Music at First Baptist Church in High Point, N.C. (1954-1958) and at Ridge Road Baptist Church in Raleigh (1958-1959) and as Organist at First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh (1959-1994).
During most of the years that Norman was Organist at First Presbyterian, he also maintained a private piano teaching studio. he retired from teaching in 1989. In addition, he was employed for a number of years at Edwards and Broughton Office Supply Co. He retired from that company in 1985.
Norman was a member of the Capital City Kiwanis Club and a former member of the Raleigh Music Club and the American Guild of Organists.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Moore Acker; his daughter, Anne Acker McNair and her husband, Bill of Columbia, South Carolina; his daughter, Carol Acker Hayden and her husband, Philip of Raleigh; his daughter, Mary Glenn Acker Hoge and her husband Carl of Tucson, Arizona; and his son, Norman Acker III, and his wife Yvonne of chapel Hill. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Lauren McNair, Melissa McNair, Katie Hayden, Michael Hayden, Matthew Hayden, Karen Hayden, Kent Hoge, Bradley Hoge, Steven Acker, Daniel Acker and Elizabeth Acker. He is also survived by two sisters, Eleanor Gohn of York, Pennsylvania and Jane Bolster of Berwyn, Pennsylvania.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 28, from 2-4 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Saint Mary's St.
Funeral service will be Monday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. Officiating will be Dr. Edwin W. Stock Jr. Interment will be at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, designated for the Norman Acker Memorial Organ Concert Fund and mailed to First Presbyterian Church, 111 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, N.C. 27601.

FRANK HENRY AHRENS
COATS -- Frank Henry Ahrens, 82, of 74 Brant Lane, Route 2, Coats, NC died March 25, 1999 at Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital of Dunn, NC. He served in the U.S. Army Airforce during WWII.
Surviving: wife, Anna Maria Ahrens of the home and one sister, Emily Hedricks of Hatfield, PA.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

STEPHEN F. ALEXANDER
WASHINGTON, DC -- Stephen Fisher Alexander, 50, died March 9, in Washington, DC after a courageous eight month battle with melanoma. Burial took place March 10 at the King David Memorial Gardens in Putnum Valley, New York. Steve was born in Princeton, New Jersey, and moved to Durham with his family in 1962. He graduated from Durham High School in 1966 and from Princeton University in 1970. He also attended Hebrew Union College (1970-1973) and received a Master's Degree in Social Work from Yeshiva University in 1982. His entire professional life was one of service to the Jewish community. During high school and college he worked as a counselor at Jewish summer camps; in the 1970s he organized and led innumerable youth group meetings and religious services; Sunday School, Hebrew School, and B'nai Mitzvah classes; and was a cantor during High Holiday services at several New Jersey synagogues. From 1977 to 1981 he served as a B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO) regional director in New Jersey; from 1982 to 1984 he was assistant international director of field services. In 1993 he was promoted to international director for non-formal Jewish education. Programs Steve participated in or helped establish included contracting and encouraging Soviet Jewish dissidents; organizing Jewish education programs in Leningrad and Birobidzhan, Soviet Union; and leading the annual March of the living to the sites of former concentration camps in Poland. He also was the dean of BBYO University (a leadership training program in conjunction with Brandeis University) and director of BBYO Kallah, a summer youth leadership training program. Steve will forever be remembered by his family and many friends all over the world not only for his lifelong devotion to Judaism but also for his ready with, his deep love of travel and food, his encyclopedic knowledge of all sports (especially college basketball) and his enthusiasm for rock music.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Fisher Alexander, in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Nailya Sagitov Alexander of Washington, DC; father, Dr. Irving E. Alexander of 1111 Watts Street, Durham; brother, sister-in-law, and nephews David, Ryna, Max, Sam, and Peretz Alexander of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; sister and brother-in-law, Kay Robin Alexander and Stuart R. Asbel of 820 Wilkerson, Avenue, Durham; and nephew Tagir Sagitov of Russia.

MARY KATHERINE ANDREWS
RALEIGH -- Mary Katherine Andrews, 4, died Friday, March 26, 1999 at the Duke University Medical Center following a brief illness.
Katie as she was lovingly called was born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 25, 1994 to Susan Showfety Andrews and the late Richard R. Andrews. She attended First Presbyterian Church and Canterbury Day School.
Survivors include her mother, Susan Showfety Andrews of Raleigh; grandparents, Mark and Katherine Andrews of Atlanta and Michael and Mary Showfety of Cary.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 29, 1999 at H.M. Patterson and Son's Historic Spring Hill Chapel with interment to follow in Westview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

CHARLES EDWARD BAIN
WILSON --Charles Edward Bain, 75, died Friday. Funeral 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Joyner's Funeral Home, with Rev. William O'Neal officiating. Burial, Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: wife, Ruby McLean Bain, daughters-and-sons-in-law, Sylvia Bain and Quincy Jeffreys of Wilson, Janet Bain and Rev. William O'Neal of Fuquay-Varina, Connie Bain of Pensacola, Fla., brother, Lennis Bain Jr.; sister, Kathleen McAlister of Wilson; five grandchildren.
Visitation at Joyner's Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m., Saturday; other times at 409 Stadium St., and 3316 Deercreek Drive.

RUBY MORRIS BRYAN
GOLDSBORO -- Ruby Morris Bryan, 98, died Friday. Born in Black Creek, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Haskill Jones Morris and Addie Freeman Morris and was the widow of Raymond Arthur Bryan. Educated in Goldsboro City Schools and at Peace College, she lived in Goldsboro most of her life. She was member of the First Baptist Church and was active in the Women's Missionary Union. In her early years, she was active in the Goldsboro Gardens Club.
Graveside services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. from Willow Dale Cemetery with Dr. Glenn Phillips officiating.
She is survived by a son, Raymond Arthur Bryan Jr. and wife, Jo Ann Collier Bryan of Goldsboro; grandsons, Raymond Arthur Bryan III of Wilmington and Stephen Collier Bryan and wife, Kaye Bryan of Goldsboro; granddaughter, Ann Bryan Gardner and husband, Michael H. Gardner of Raleigh; seven great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; sisters, Margaret Morris Turner and Vivian Morris Wharton both of Goldsboro; brother, Haskill Jones Morris Jr. of Mount Olive; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday at the residence of Mrs. James Whaton's, 1608 E. Walnut Street.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 125 S. John Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530.

RUBY MORRIS BRYAN
GOLDSBORO -- Ruby Morris Bryan, 98, died Friday. Born in Black Creek, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Haskill Jones Morris and Addie Freeman Morris and was the widow of Raymond Arthur Bryan. DR. WORTH MILLER BYRD
SANFORD -- Dr. Worth Miller Byrd, 81, of 600 Carbonton Rd., died Friday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
Memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Carl Rush and the Rev. Rick Martindale.
Dr. Byrd attended Wake Forest University and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in dentistry. He received a master's degree in Orthodontics at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a member of the N.C. Orthodontics Society, N.C. Dental Society and American Dental Society, a member of Quail Ridge Golf Club, and an Elder Ameritus and member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving: his wife, Mrs. Virginia Byrd; sons, Jones Byrd of Asheville, Dr. Sam Byrd of Winston-Salem; daughter, Sarah Turner of Charlotte; brothers, W.H. Byrd of Lillington, Sam Byrd of Bunnlevel; eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at their home, 600 Carbonton Rd., Saturday afternoon and evening.
Arrangements are being handled by the Miller-Boles Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 203 Hawkins Ave., Sanford, N.C. 27330, Boys and Girls Club of Sanford/Lee County, or to a charity of one's choice.
