RICHARD ALAN BRENNEMAN
AUGUST 24, 1943 - MAY 27, 1999
HOLLY SPRINGS -- Richard Alan Brenneman, 55, of Holly Springs, died Thursday. He was a real estate agent with Fonville-Morisey.
He is survived by his wife, Jean M. Brenneman; son, Jim Brenneman; sister, Sue Ann Cross and brother-in-law, Ron Cross; father and mother-in-law, Glenn and Lora Matthews; and nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, in Cary. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Sunrise United Methodist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 295, Holly Springs, NC 27540.

MARTHA H. COATS
FOUR OAKS -- Mrs. Martha Horton Coats, age 70, of 670 Berea Church Road died Friday at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church, Benson. The Revs. Aubrey Williamson and Billy Nowell will officiate. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Coats was born January 20, 1929 in Johnston County to the late Jimmy and Sarah Viola Young Horton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robinson Atlee Coats. Mrs. Coats was a retired dietician and was a nurse's aide and caregiver in the health care industry. She also was a homemaker. Mrs. Coats was a member of St. Mary's Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church where she served in many capacities.
Survivors include daughters, Lesia C. Raynor of Dunn and Wanda C. Norris of Charleston, SC; son, Robbie A. Coats, Jr., of Raleigh; sisters, Agnes H. Ingram of Benson, Eula Mae H. Allen of Four Oaks, Bobbie H. Ammons of Roseboro, and Faye H. Brooks of Bennettsville, SC; brother, C. Sherrill Horton of Four Oaks; six grandchildren, Todd Wood, Anthony Wood, Yuvette Buelna, Amy Berg, Tovia Coats and Amber Norris; four great-grandchildren, Shawna Wood, Brett McLamb, Kayla Buelna and Sydney Wood.
The family will be at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson 7-9 p.m. Sunday.
The family suggests memorials be made to St. Mary's Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church, c/o Cathy Langdon, 7151 Raleigh Road, Benson, NC 27504.

KATE GRIFFIN COLE
RALEIGH -- Kate Griffin Cole, 84, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 27, 1999 in Mayview Convalescent Center, Raleigh, NC. She was the daughter of the late Thomas C. and Daisy Austin Griffin and had three brothers and sisters.A native of Wingate, NC, she grew up in Monroe, NC and had been a resident of Hampton, VA for 62 years. Kate was an active member of Memorial Baptist Church in Hampton for over 55 years, served as an ordained Deacon, Sunday School teacher and was a member of the WMU. Vibrant and active, Kate was a member of the Wythe Women's Club, the Hampton Women's Club and the Hampton Lady Lions. She was an avid flower gardner
Kate was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Charles Eley Cole.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda L. and Lee C. Haas of Raleigh, NC; sister, Irene Ellis of Hampton; granddaughters, Cindy L. Tatem of Cary, NC and Karen L. Simmons of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; great-granddaughter, Madeline R. Simmons also of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; many nieces and nephews.
Kate Cole was a wonderful Christian wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. We will miss her.
The family will receive friends at the Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News, VA, from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, June 5. A memorial service will follow.

MARCUS COPELAN JR.
DURHAM -- Marcus Copelan, Jr., of Durham, died at his home on May 25, 1999.He attended Davidson College, the University of North Carolina School of Public Health at Chapel Hill and the University of Caen in Normandy, France.He served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Sierra Leone, West Africa from 1967-1969.For many years, Mr. Copelan lived in New York where he worked in public health and marketing.Upon his return to Durham in 1985, he worked as Director of Education for American Social Health Association.Marcus Copelan was a beloved member of the Men's Center of Raleigh and Wake County, where he was honored by election to its Leadership Council, serving as its President from 1996 through 1997.
He is succeeded by his mother, Kathleen Long Copelan, of Chapel Hill; two sisters, Kathleen C. Snethen of Hurdle Mills, and Ann C. Pierce of Apex; his constant canine companion, Max; and many friends.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3639 Old Chapel Hill Road, Durham.The service will be conducted by the Reverend Haywood Holderness and the Reverend Graham Patterson of Richmond.Burial will be a private ceremony at the family plot in Maplewood Cemetery, Old Section.
The family requests that flowers be omitted.Contributions may be made to your preferred charity.

SHIRLEY C. DEANS
MICRO -- Shirley Jean Capps Deans, 52, died Friday. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are her son, Donald Lee Strickland of Charlotte; daughters, Shelby Jean Garscas of Kenly, Susie Deans and Jessica Campos both of the home; brothers, Clarence Capps of Wilson's Mills and Jimmy Taylor of New Bern; sisters, Christine Strickland and Lois Sellers both of Selma, Peggy Ann Capps of Four Oaks, Alice Capps of Roxboro and Hilda Thompson of Pine Level; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

DR. FRANK A. DOWNING SR.
PORTSMOUTH, VA -- Dr. Frank A. Downing, Sr., 78, formerly of Baltimore, MD, died Friday, May 28, 1999 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Dr. Downing was a graduate of Wake Forest University and Baptist Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. He was the minister of Belvedere Baptist Church in Baltimore for 43 years.
Funeral service will be held 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, at Northside Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth White Downing.
He is survived by one son, Dr. Frank A. Downing, Jr. of Portsmouth, VA.

ADDIE G. GARDNER
WILSON -- Addie Graham Gardner, 94, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, in Kinston. She had lived in Kinston with her daughter, Jean, for the past 9 years. She was the widow of Sylvester H. Gardner, a member of the Eastern Star and a retired florist. Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by a son, W.G. "Billy" Gardner of Wilson in 1997.
Funeral, Tuesday, 11:00 a.m., First Christian Church, Wilson. Interment, Maplewood Cemetery.
Surviving is her daughter and her husband, Jean and Jack Overman with whom she lived; daughter-in-law, Yvonne Landen Gardner of Wilson; grandchildren, Lou Ann O. Kernodle and her husband, Dr. Michael Wayne Kernodle, of Boone, Jan G. Overman of Boone, Cathi and Gardner of Wilson, Beth G. Hargett and her husband, Peter Stowe Hargett of Wilson, great-grandchildren, Jack and Leigh Ann Singley of Boone, Gardner and Matt Watkins of Wilson; close sisters-in-law, Ethel Harrell of Tarboro and Fannie Gay of Argyle, TX; several dear nieces and nephews.
The family will be at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Service, 2704 W. Nash St., Wilson, Monday, 7-8:30 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church, Wilson, or the First Baptist Church., Kinston.

SARA BROOKS NAIR JAMES
HAMLET -- Mrs. Sara Brooks Nair James, 76, died Thursday, May 27.
Born January 17, 1923 in Clifton Forge, Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles Perry Nair Jr. and Sara Logan Brooks Nair, and the wife of the late Dr. William Duer James, who was surgeon and chief of staff at the Hamlet Hospital and a North Carolina State Senator.
She is survived by five daughters, Dr. Sara (Sally) N. James and husband, David L. Mims Jr. of Staunton, Va., formerly of Norfolk, Betty James Montgomery and husband, Walter S. Montgomery Jr. of Spartanburg, SC, Lillian James Smith and husband, Percy R. Smith Jr. of Wilmington, Virginia James Shelley and husband, Mark E. Shelley of Concord, and Janet Marie James of Raleigh. She has 12 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Frances Nair Armstrong of Covington, Va.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Hillside Cemetery, Laurinburg, officiated by the Rev. Dr. E. Douglas Vaughan.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 200 Rice Street, Hamlet, NC 28345, Endowment Fund, Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, Va. 24401; or the charity of one's choice.
McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium of Lauringburg is serving the family.

LUCILLE H. JONES
SUFFOLK, Va. -- Lucille Harris Jones, 88, of the 1000 block of Carters Road, Hobbsville, and formerly of Carolina Road in Suffolk, died Saturday, May 29. 1999.
Mrs. Jones was born in Perquimans County, the daughter of the late Thomas Waff and Mrs. Frances Munden Harris. She was a homemaker and a member of Eureka Baptist Church in Corapeake. She was the wife of the late Seth Aaron Jones.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Lucille Woodard and her husband, Walter Woodard of Pendleton, NC; one son, S.A. Jones and his wife, Sharon of Hobbsville, NC; two grandsons, Rick Jones and his wife, Ann Marie of Hobbsville and Aaron Woodard of Pendleton, NC and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Brittany Jones.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Karen Renee Jones.
Graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Eureka Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Cameron Currin.
Friends may join the family, Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville and all other times at the home of her son, 1084 Carters Road, Hobbsville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eureka Baptist Church, Hwy. 32, Corapeake, NC 27926.

MARGARET BROWN PARAMORE
NASHVILLE -- Margaret Brown Paramore, 91, died May 28, 1999. She was born in Washington County, NC, on April 27, 1908, daughter of the late Henry and Kitty Stocks Brown. Mrs. Brown was a retired School Teacher of the Washington County School System and attended the Oak Level Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter H. Paramore Sr.
Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, Rex A. and Margaret Paramore of Nashville, Walter H., Jr. and Betty Paramore of New Bern; grandchildren, Walter H. Paramore III, Katherine Paramore Carman and Bettie Paramore Johnson; nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 1999 at the Johnson Chapel, Nashville with the Rev. Nathaniel Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.

MARY KEITH PERRY
SALISBURY -- Mary Keith Perry, of 301 Stuart Drive, Salisbury, NC died Friday, May 28, 1999, at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC following a long and valiant struggle against breast cancer.
Mrs. Perry was born in St. Pauls, NC and was the daughter of the late Frederick Rulfs and Grace Butler Keith. She was a graduate of Salem Academy in Winston-Salem and Catawba College in Salisbury and an alumna of Meredith College in Raleigh. She was married to Dow V. Perry on September 20, 1958, and was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. As her family matured, she worked in several social service, financial and public school position, always placing first the interests of her family before other activities.
She was an active and loyal member of First United Methodist Church where her leadership was valued and her numerous activities included the Chancel Choir, Sunday School teacher, many committees and membership in a Methodist Women's Circle. She loved music and was a charter member of The Concert Choir of Salisbury as well as an accomplished pianist and was an active supporter of the Arts and other civic activities in Salisbury. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a founder of the Serendipity Book Club, active in the Association of Couples of Marriage Enrichment and had volunteered her time to tutor Hispanic immigrants using her knowledge of Spanish to help them learn English. She continuously supported her family by taking leadership roles in any programs affecting her children, including Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, public school, church, and civic programs. Her many friends included members of her neighborhood club, her couples club and her YMCA swim group as well as fellow members of the organizations previously mentioned.
She was the extraordinary person, radiant and caring, who touched the lives of all who knew and loved her. She will be missed by all those who share the joy of her life.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 40 years, Dow V. Perry; three sons, Vick Jr. and wife Christie of Seattle, Keith of Raleigh, and Kent and wife Teresa of Atlanta; granddaughters, Laura and Eva Perry of Seattle and granddaughter, Madeline Perry of Atlanta; brothers, Fred Keith of Atlanta and Thomas Keith of Fayetteville.
A service celebrating her life will be held June 1, 1999, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Dr. Donald Haynes officiating. The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall following the service. A private memorial service at City Memorial Park will be held prior to the church service.
The family suggests that memorials be made to First Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 217 South Church Street, Salisbury, NC 28144.
Summerset Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GLADYS A. SKINNER
ROCKY MOUNT -- Mrs. Gladys Anderson Skinner, 78, of Rocky Mount, died Saturday, May 29, 1999 at home.
Mrs. Skinner was born in Iron Belt, Wisconsin on March 18, 1921, the daughter of the late Hans and Edla Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Clarence Anderson.
Mrs. Skinner is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, Thomas Brooks Skinner Sr. of the home; her son, Thomas Brooks Skinner Jr. of Durham, and two sisters, Alice Hartman of San Diego, California and Margaret White of Des Moines, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rocky Mount where Mrs. Skinner was a member of the choir for many years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Rocky Mount, Hospice of Nash or the charity of choice.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.
