EVERETT KERMIT VEACH SR.
SCOTLAND NECK -- Everett Kermit Veach, Sr., 93, died May 29, 1999.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at the Scotland Neck United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery.
Mr. Veach is survived by his wife, Evelyn J. Veach of Scotland Neck; daughter, Barbara V. Piland of Winton; son, E. Kermit Veach, Jr. of Scotland Neck; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday evening, May 31, at Letchworth Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Scotland Neck United Methodist Church; the Scotland Neck Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 13, Scotland Neck, NC 27874; or to the Winton Baptist Church, Winton, NC 27986.

MARIAH H. WILLIAMS
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Mariah H. Williams of 512 Rock Quarry Road, died Thursday, May 27, 1999.
Funeral 1 p.m. Tuesday, Smith Temple FWB Church. Burial, Oak City Baptist Church Cemetery, Method, NC.
Surviving: daughters, Marjorie M. Peterson, Gwenerva M. Williams, both of Raleigh; sons, Charles C. Howard of Raleigh, Robert M. Howard of Jersey City, NJ., Clarence E. Williams of Raleigh, Robert M. Howard Jr. of Raleigh; 26 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at the church.

HOWARD ADOLPHUS WILLIAMS
GARNER -- Howard Adolphus Williams, 71, of Garner and Four Oaks, died Friday, May 27, 1999. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Reedy Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Williams of Four Oaks; sons and daughters-in-law, Sherwood and Betsy Williams of Four Oaks and Mark and Amy Williams of Apex; granddaughter, Briana Ellen Williams; brother, Stanley S. Williams of Cary; sisters, Lillian W. Sorrell, Ruth Williams, and Doris W. Wood, all of Durham, Jan W. Edwards of Raleigh; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Cary. Those considering memorial contributions may make them to Reedy Creek Baptist Church, 1524 N. Harrison Ave., Cary, NC 27513.

EVIE HENLEY ZACHARY
KNIGHTDALE -- Evie Henley Zachary, 75, died Friday, May 28, 1999. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at McLaurin Funeral Chapel with burial to follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Clayton. Rev. Terry officiating.
She is survived by: daughter, Lura Z. Perry of Knightdale; son, Frank Ray Zachary of Graham.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at McLaurin Funeral Home, Inc., Clayton, NC.

PAUL J. DOYLE
CLAYTON -- Paul Joseph Doyle, 56, of 2017 Walden Way, died Thursday, Feb. 18, Prayer services 7 p.m. Saturday at McLaurin Funeral Home chapel with visitation following from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Rev. Joseph Mulroney officiating. Burial in Norton Common Cemetery, Norton, MA.
He is survived by: son and daughter-in-law, John and Katherine Doyle of Chesterfield, VA; mother, Muriel Rudian of Clayton; sisters, Leanora Scharle of Barrington, NJ, Kathleen Shover of Tioga, PA; brother, Joseph Doyle of Woodbury, NJ; grandchildren, Sean Doyle and Melissa Doyle, both of Clayton.
Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Ann's Catholic Church Building Fund, 113 N. 7th St., Smithfield, NC 27577.

PRENTISS M. GARNER
NEWPORT -- Prentiss M. Garner, 85, of Newport, died February 16, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A native and lifelong resident of Newport, Mr. Garner was a graduate of Newport High School and Norfolk Business School. He was a retired magistrate and a member of Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church.
The widower of Florida E. Garner.
He is survived by three daughters, Betsy Garner and Nancy Moore, both of Newport, Patsy Garner of Virginia Beach, VA; son, Prentiss M. Garner, Jr. of Graham; three grandchildren, Jennifer and James Luther Moore of Raleigh, Jeremy Moore of Cary.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Amariah Garner Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at his residence, 967 Mason Town Rd.
Flowers are acceptable or memorial contributions may be made to the Newport Public Library, 431 Howard Blvd., Newport, NC 28570.

HENRY T. GOSWICK
FRANKLINTON -- Henry Tucker Goswick, 75, 212 Bullock St., died February 19, 1999 at Rex Hospital. He was a member of Franklinton Baptist Church, a retired supervisor in textile mfg., and was associated with Sandling Funeral Home.
He was predeceased by his parents Hixie Wheeler & Henry Goswick.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Sandling Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dupre Sanders officiating. Burial, Fairview Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Ann Goswick; daughter, Lynn Goswick of Lexington; sons, Wayne Goswick of Greenville, Jeff Goswick of Ayden, and Ronnie Goswick of Franklinton; sister, Joyce Roberts of Franklinton; brother, Garland Goswick of Franklinton; and nine grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Sandling Funeral Home.

SYLVIA W. HAYNES
CARY -- Sylvia Wicker Haynes, 52, of Route #6, Hendersonville, formerly of Cary, died Sunday, February 14, 1999. She was born in Wake County and was the daughter of the late Harold and Evelyn Guess Wicker. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 1999 at Raleigh Memorial Park.
Mrs. Haynes is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roddy and Deana Hubbell of Raleigh; brother and sister-in-law, Chip and Sandy Wicker of Boone; nieces, Tara Wicker of Boone and Melissa Barnette of New Hill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Crews formerly of the Cary Police Department and by her sister, Michelle Barnette.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sylvia Wicker Haynes Fund, P.O. Box 651, Rolesville, NC 27571.
The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 1999 at Bright Funeral Home, Wake Forest.

DR. CATHERINE HENLY
CHAPEL HILL -- Catherine Henley died of Cancer on February 19, 1999 at her home at Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill. She was born on July 20, 1922, in Quantico, VA, the daughter of Regina Knowles and John Ralph Henley (Ret. Col., USMC). Because of her father's service duties, she spent her early years at a variety of military postings all over the world. Dr. Henley held the AB degree (1943) from UNC-CH, the MS degree from Johns Hopkins University, and the doctorate in biology from UNC-CH.
Her professional career was centered primarily in three areas: 1) she was associated with the Department of Zoology at UNC-CH until 1975, when 2) she joined the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health. At NEI she was responsible for the administration of peer review research grant applications until 1990. 3) During this entire period she carried out an active research career during the summers at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. At the MBL she also held a variety of administrative and committee posts, including membership on the Laboratory's Board of Trustees for two terms and 18 years of service as an editorial associate for The Biological Bulletin, the MBL's principal research publication.
In 1990 she retired from NEI and settled in Chapel Hill, NC. There Dr. Henley became actively involved in the work of two groups, the Triangle Radio Reading Service (for which she was an on-air volunteer reader for six years and a Board of Directors member) and Hospice.
A brother, Knowles Henley of Kemah, TX, survives.

RANDOLPH THOMPSON HESTER SR.
ROXBORO -- Randolph Thompson Hester, Sr., 85, of 500 Hillhaven Terrace, died Thursday, February 18, 1999 at Person County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Hester was born in Person County to the late Nathaniel Howard and Ada Jacobs Hester. He attended Elon College, was a WW II Army Air Corp veteran. He was employed by the US Department of Agriculture as a tobacco grader and spent some time in South America. He was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Wesley Hambrick Sunday School Class and a member of the United Methodist Men. Mr. Hester was also a member of the Roxboro Elks BPO Lodge No. 2005.
Surviving: are his wife, Virginia Green Hester; son, Randolph Thompson "Randy" Hester, Jr. of Berkeley, CA; grandchild, Nate Hester; brother, Stedman Hester of Durham; sisters, Catherine Bullock of Creedmoor and Eleanor Dickens of Roxboro.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the Long Memorial United Methodist Church the Rev. William D. Sabiston, III. Burial will be in the Hester family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.

JAMES "OWEN" HILLIARD
SARASOTA, FL -- James "Owen" Hilliard, 90, of 4532 Woodside Rd., formerly of Raleigh, NC, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999. Mr. Hilliard was born in Johnston County to the late Fredrick and Berta Jones Hilliard.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will be receiving friends prior to the service on Saturday afternoon from 1-2 p.m. at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC.
Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to the Hayes Barton Baptist Church TV Ministry, 1800 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27608-2385.

KATHLEEN C. JOHNSON
CARTHAGE -- Mrs. Kathleen Crenshaw Johnson, 72, died Thursday at her home. Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Charles Hinsonand Rev. Dr. Al Martin. Entombment will follow in Cross Hill Mausoleum.
Surviving: husband, S.B. "Brack" Johnson, Jr.; daughter, Victoria Kathleen Johnson of the home; son, S.B. "Trip" Johnson, III of Cary; sister, Betty Wilson of Atlanta, GA; brother, Ralph Crenshaw of Columbus, GA.
Family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home.

FANNYE MARKS
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- Fannye Marks, 95, died February 18, 1999, at a Virginia Beach, VA hospital. A native of Kinston, NC, and lifelong resident of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Fannye was founder and President of Fannye's, Inc., a well known ladies specialty shop located in Roanoke Rapids, until her retirement in 1995.
Miss Marks is survived by her brother-in-law, Robert G. Liverman; one nephew, Ben A. Marks; and three nieces, Marilyn Levy, Betty Moritz, and Nancy Millstein, and a number of great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Fleeta M. Bell and Marcella M. Liverman, and her brother, Samuel "Buddy" Marks.
She was a member of Temple Emanu-El of Weldon, NC, Temple Emanuel of Virginia Beach, VA, N.C. Association of Jewish Women, and numerous community organizations.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Marks-Liverman Scholarship Endowment Fund at Halifax Community College, P.O. Drawer 809, Weldon, NC 27890.
A private graveside service will be held in Roanoke Rapids on Sunday, February 21, 1999.
