ARTHUR N.B. ROBERTSON
RALEIGH -- Arthur N.B. Robertson, 86, Lt. Col. retired, U.S. Marine Corps died February 18, 1999 in Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden, SC. Graveside service will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh.
Col. Robertson was born in Raleigh on September 20, 1912 to Malcolm Stewart and Elsie Camden Robertson. He graduated from the University of South Carolina where he played football and ran track. He was commissioned in the first Marine Corps Leaders Course (PLC) in 1935. He went on active duty in 1940. He served in World War II at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima, served on the Peace Team at Panmunjom during the Korean War. Other duty stations included Parris Island, SC; Quantico, VA; San Diego, CA; Camp LeJune, NC,; Norfolk, VA; Tokyo and Yokoshuka, Japan; Georgia Tech, Atlanta; and Charleston SC. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1960. During his distinguished career he was awarded the Bronze Star.
He formed and headed Robertson Realty Co. in Charlottesville, VA from 1961 until his retirement in 1981. The following years were spent in Jacksonville, NC and Camden, SC.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lyn McPherson Robertson of Camden, SC; three daughters, Anne McCauley of Burke, VA, Katharine Pittman of Waxhaw, Cindy Behrendt of Charlotte; sister, Anne Pond of Raleigh; brother, M. Stewart Robertson, Jr. of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

RUTH E. RUBENS
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Ruth E. Rubens, 71, of 4909 Hermitage Dr., died Thursday evening at Wake Medical Center.
On Sept. 11, 1998 she and her beloved husband, Alfredo Rubens celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In 1948 they were married at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ithaca, NY.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home on Glenwood Ave. Interment will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
Surviving: husband, Alfredo Rubens; daughters, Joyce L. Rubens of Cary, Cathleen A. Rubens of Apex, Victoria R. Otto of Smithfield, Cynthia R. Rubens of Youngsville, Vivian R. Cooke of Louisburg; sister, Doris McEver of Ithaca, NY; four grandchildren.

ORA DEE FRIZZELL SULLIVAN
PITTSBORO -- Ora Dee Frizzell Sullivan, 88, died Friday, February 19, 1999. Mrs. Sullivan was a native of Cookeville, TN and a resident of Pittsboro. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Pittsboro Presbyterian Church by The Rev. Robert Cleveland. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Sullivan is survived by her daughter, Betty S. Bullard and husband, Cecil of Fayetteville; two sons; Beverly H. Sullivan and wife, Jean of Warrenton, VA, and Erbie Lee Sullivan and wife, Reba of Pittsboro; five grandsons; and one granddaughter.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Griffin Funeral Service in Pittsboro and at other times at the home of Lee Sullivan.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Pittsboro Presbyterian Church.

SIGNE A. SWANSON
AUG. 20, 1905 - FEB. 18, 1999
RALEIGH -- Signe Anderson Johnson Swanson, 93, of Parkway Rest Home, formerly of Independence Village, died Thursday night. She was born in Ronneby Sweden and was the widow of Tage Werner Swanson. A graveside funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 at Raleigh Memorial Park with Reverend John Wenberg officiating.
Surviving: daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Robert Owens, Janet and Louis Giannattasio, all of Raleigh; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Alzheimers Association, 400 Oberlin Rd., Raleigh, NC 27605 or the Westover United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 300 Powell Dr., Raleigh, NC 27606.

LEORIA R. WATSON
AUG. 18, 1907-FEB. 18, 1999
GARNER -- Leoria Cook Rowe Watson, born August 18, 1907 to John Isaac Cook and Maggie Mitchell Cook, died Thursday, February 18, 1999. A retired elementary teacher, NCAE member, graduate of East Carolina and Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College). She taught in Johnston, Wake and Dare counties. After retirement from Cape Hatteras School in Buxton, she lived in Kill Devil Hills for 25 years and with her granddaughter, Melinda Canady of Garner before moving to Lawndale Manor.
She was preceded in death by her son, Roger Derrieux "Derry" Rowe; husbands, Robert Alvin Rowe and John Preston Watson; sisters, Lela Griffin of Edenton, Mildred Batts and brother, John Cook both of Wilson.
She is survived by daughters, Betty Lou Rowe Penny and husband Horace of Rocky Mount, Ann Rowe Baucom and husband William of Rome, Italy, daughter-in-law, Trudy Rowe Jackson of Maltby, England; grandchildren, Roger D. Rowe, Jr, and his wife Kathy of Montgomery, AL, Melinda Penny Canady and husband Wayne of Garner, Melanie Penny Mangum and husband Donald of Fuquay-Varina, Melissa Penny Murphy and husband Charles of Naugatuck, CT; great-grandchildren, Rebekah Claire Mangum, C. Austin Murphy, III, and Jacob Dexter Murphy; step-grandchildren, Amy and Ashley and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Watson was also a charter member of Highland Baptist Church, Raleigh, a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and St. Mary's Free Will Baptist Church in Kenly. She was instrumental in the organization of St. Mary's Home Demonstration Club of Wake Co. She was a lover of flowers, animals and her church. Memorials may be made to the church of your choice or to the Leoria C. Watson Endowment Fund, Mt. Olive College, 634 Henderson Street, Mt. Olive, NC 28365, or your local Meals on Wheels.
Visitation will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner, on Sunday, February 21, 1999 from 3:30-5 p.m. The funeral will be at Bryan-Lee on Monday, February 22, 1999 at 11 a.m. The family will also receive friends one hour before the funeral. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.

MARJORIE F. ADAMS
WARRENTON -- Marjorie Frances Daniel Adams, 73, of 151 Ridgecrest Drive, died Saturday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Macon Baptist Church by the Rev. Rob Evans. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Blaylock Funeral Home on Monday from 7-9 p.m.

ELIZABETH "LIB" F. CANADAY
FOUR OAKS -- Mrs. Elizabeth "Lib" Floyd Canaday, age 72, of 510 N. Main St., Four Oaks died Sunday at Rex Healthcare. Mrs. Canaday was born in Robeson County on June 16, 1926 to the late Fred Williams and Lillian Bullock Floyd. She graduated from Brenau College in 1947 and was a member of Mu Chapter of the Phi Mu Sorority and Phi Beta Speech Fraternity. Mrs. Canaday's service to her community included the following: member of the Johnston County Mental Health Board; volunteer for Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; member of Women's Auxiliary of the NC Pharmaceutical Association; member of Keep Johnston County Beautiful Board; past president of First Baptist of Four Oaks WMU; held many teaching positions in the First Baptist Church, as well as president of the trustees; past chairman of James Bryan Creech Library Board; Trustee and Treasurer of the library since March 1, 1967; led numerous drives for the Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Easter Seals, American Heart Association and United Way; and member of the Smith-Bryan Chapter of DAR.
Funeral services for Mrs. Canaday will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday morning in the First Baptist Church of Four Oaks. The Rev. John Norman and Dr. Sherrill Stevens will officiate over the service. Burial is to follow in the Four Oaks Cemetery.
Surviving are: husband, Merwin S. "Bill" Canaday; daughters, June Canaday and husband Don West of Burlington, Jean Canaday Wilson of Clemmons, Jo Ann Canaday and husband Peter Williams of Charlotte, Jennifer Canaday and husband David Smith of Graham; sisters, Pearl Saleeby of Fayetteville and Hilda Merrill of Jacksonville, FL; brothers, Francis Floyd, Ralph Floyd and Carey Floyd, all of Fairmont and Richard Floyd of Lexington; grandchildren, Richard and Jennifer West, Catherine and Michael Wilson, Mary, Ashley, Elizabeth and Jonathan Williams, Jessica, Sara and Brian Smith.
Family will receive friends at Minshew Funeral Home in Four Oaks from 7-9 p.m. Monday.

REV. STERLING MORDECAI CHESTON SR.
DEC. 21, 1929-APRIL 18, 1999
NORLINA -- Reverend Sterling Mordecai Cheston died April 18, 1999.
He was born in Trenton, NC, eldest son of the late Reverend Augustus and Bertha Cheston on December 21, 1929. He was married to the late Mollie P. Hardy (1930-1984). In 1987 he married Rose Hedgepeth; they maintained residences in Oxford and Norlina, NC until his death.
After serving in the Air Force, he later taught in the Warren County Public School System. He retired in 1990 after 31 years of dedicated service. He served as Associate Minister at Locust Grove Baptist Church, Wise, NC and Belton Creek Baptist Church, Oxford, NC.
He was active in many religious and civic activities including devotional and Bible study leader for senior citizens' home, all auxiliaries of the General Baptist State Convention, Habitat for Humanity, 4-H leader, Boy Scout leader, and Little League coach. He was recognized by Governor Hunt for outstanding volunteerism. He was always ready to do any thing for anybody.
Survivors include his wife, Rose; sons, Sebastian (Sandra) of Forestville, MD, Sterling Jr. of Apex, NC, Shawn (Julia) of Durham, NC, Derrick (Sharon) of Woodmere Village, OH, Kevin (Constance) of Winterville, NC, Vincent Hedgepeth (Angelique) of Greensboro, NC, Donald Hedgepeth (Tonia) of Henderson, NC; daughter, Oita Coleman (Charles) of Apex, NC; brothers, Johnny Cheston (Sallie) of Temple Hills, MD, Augustus, Jr. (Vivian) of Fernpark, FL; sisters, Etta Williams of Forestville, MD, Mattie Colson (Alexander) of Forestville, MD; 13 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon on Wednesday at Belton Creek Baptist Church in Granville County by Rev. Anthony Cozart. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
The family will receive visitors 7-8 p.m. Tuesday night at Wright Funeral Home and other times at 103 Warren Ave., in Oxford.

CARLTON LEE GREEN
RALEIGH -- Carlton Lee Green, of 813 Peyton St., died Saturday. Funeral 1 p.m. Tuesday, Upper Room Church of God in Christ. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: mother, Daisy Lee Burgess and her husband, Early I. Burgess of Raleigh; father, Clarence R. Green Sr. and his wife Doris Green of Garner; sisters, Kesha Leverette of Raleigh, Amy Bailey and Sylvia Green both of Waterbury, CT, Pam Green of New York, NY, Wilhemenia Lindsay of Lexington, NC, April Green of Garner, Loretta Burgess of Arlington, VA, Sherry Burgess of Raleigh, and Edna Gutherie of Wake Forest; brothers, Clarence R. Green Jr. and Keith Green both of Raleigh, and Ricky Burgess of Fayetteville; a special brother, Prentice B. "Benjie" Little of Virginia Beach, VA; maternal grandmother, Pauline Jeffreys of Raleigh; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation, Tuesday, 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church. All other times at the home.

HARRY LEE LOVIC LOVIC SR.
WILMINGTON -- Harry Lee Lovic Sr., of Wilmington, died Saturday, April 17, 1999 at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Lovic was born on July 14, 1928 in Farmville, the son of the late Ralph William and Rosa Wooten Lovic.
He was the retired owner of ABC Fire Protection and Safety Equipment Co., and a member of American Legion Post 10. Mr. Lovic was a member of Long Leaf Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Helen Marshburn Lovic of the home; one son, H. Lee Lovic Jr. and wife, Brenda of Wilmington; one daughter, Brenda Gayle Lovic of Wilmington; one grandson, Brandon Lovic; two sisters, Sally Baldree and husband, Otis of Farmville, and Louis Rigsbee and husband, Austin of Durham; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at Long Leaf Baptist Church, with Rev. Eugene Ridley officiating. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be employees of ABC Fire Protection Co. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Sunday School Class at Long Leaf Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel.
Memorials may be made to Long Leaf Baptist Church, 317 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington, NC 28412.

LOVIE E. McELROY
APEX -- Lovie E. McElroy, Sr., 80, of Apex, North Carolina died April 14, 1999, at Rex Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
After retiring from the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C. Mr. McElroy and his wife, Hazel, relocated to the Cary-Apex area. He was a member of the Greenwood Forest baptist Church, Cary Masonic Lodge, and the Amran Temple. Mac was an avid pigeon fancier and world-renowned expert on racing pigeons.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel; sons, Stephen and L.E. McElroy, Jr.; Grandsons, Mark and Shawn; honorary granddaughter, Kimberly Wells; and great-granddaughter, Hannah, all of Cary and Apex; and brothers William H. McElroy, Harris McElroy; and sister, Annette Peck, of Georgia.
Celebration of Life Service will be held April 19, 1999 at 6:45 p.m. at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County.

ROXIE MULLEN POOLE
ZEBULON -- Roxie Mullen Poole, 102, died April 17, 1999.
She is survived by daughters, Twila Moss of the home, Mae Mitchell of Bunn, Ann Wilson of Raleigh and Louise Edwards of Greensboro; sisters, Ruby Arnold of Zebulon and L.G. Smith of Raleigh; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren; Special caregiver, Linda Wheeless.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Poole and a daughter Mary Taylor.
Funeral 11 a.m. Monday, April 19, 1999 at Pine Ridge Baptist Church. Burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the burial.
