JOYCE LUCAS POPE
GOLDSBORO -- Joyce Lucas Pope, 60, of 100 Trey Drive, died Sunday at her residence. A native of Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Zebulon and Ann Bynum Lucas. She was a former personnel director at Belk's and was an accounting clerk with the NC Forestry Service.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. William Gay officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan M. Lewis of Goldsboro and a nephew, Robert V. West and wife, Teresa of Raleigh; other nephews, Steve Brodgen and wife, Shelia of Goldsboro, Don C. West and wife, Julie of Goldsboro, Ray Lucas and wife, LaDonna of Stewartstown, Pa.; niece, Evita C. Bizzell and husband, Jesse of Micro.
Mrs. Pope was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte West and a brother, Pershing Lucas.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.

LOUISE WATKINS SOLANICK
WAKE FOREST -- Louise Watkins Solanick, 92, died Sunday, April 18, 1999 at Carolina House in Wake Forest. She was a retired antique dealer.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: Bob Watkins Yow of WakeForest; several cousins.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, April 19, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home of Randy and Gale White, 1525 Old Watkins Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27604.

ESTHER KATHERINE SWAYER
RALEIGH -- Esther Katherine Swayer, 91, of Raleigh, died Friday, April 16, 1999.
Mrs. Swayer was a retired school teacher from Brooklyn New York, an avid bird watcher, and a world traveler. She moved to Raleigh in 1990 to be closer to her family. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Surviving are her sister, Ruth S. Murphy of Raleigh; and her nieces and nephews, Katherine Lail of Wendell, Philip Murphy of Atlanta, Ga, Loretta Wall of Raleigh, Edmund Murphy of Denver, CO, and John Murphy of Raleigh.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road. Burial will be in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family received friends on Sunday, April 18, 1999 from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Brooklyn Bird Club, c/o Ruth Murphy, 909 Chatham Lane, Raleigh, NC 27610.

BEULAH H. BASS
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Beulah H. Bass was born, November 8, 1933 in Wake County.
She is the daughter of Iola Hinton and the late Johnnie W. Hinton. She departed this life on April 30, 1999 at 9 p.m.
At an early age she joined Good Samaritan, later membership was moved to Bright Hope Holiness Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. In the late 1970's she and her husband built Deliverance Tabernacle Holiness Church where she served as pastor. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Eddie L. Bass Sr., and to this union 11 children were born.
Preceding her in death were two sons, Patrick and Maurice and husband of 49 years Eddie L. Bass Sr.
She leaves to mourn her death, mother, Iola Hinton; nine children, Herman Bass Sr. (Silvia), Katie McCullough (Van), Carolyn Atkinson (Eddie), Johnnie Bass (Gloria), Elaine Bass, Eddie Bass Jr. (Bobbie), Barbara Bass (Irvin), Michael Bass (Sabrina), Patricia Savoury (Eddie); three brothers, Johnnie Hinton (Peggy), Joseph Hinton (Leola), David Hinton (Mary); 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
Funeral service to be held, Tuesday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at Bible Way Holiness Church, 514 Main Street, Garner, NC. Interment to follow at Rand Street Church Cemetery.

ERIN J. CHAFFEE
RALEIGH -- Erin Jean Chaffee, 16 who's name translates to peace, loving daughter of John and Debbie, little sis of Ryan, Matt, Jill and Jeff special niece and cousin, fun loving and giving friend and classmate, brilliant student, gifted dancer and joyful child of God, passed from us on Friday April 30, 1999.
Wispy bangs, dancer's legs disarming smile, ready laugh, this was Erin on the outside. Intelligent, introspective, sensitive, nurturing, fun loving, giving, warm, humorous, charming are some of the traits that made Erin, Erin. Best reflected by her choice of friends and activities, she was the life of the group, the consummate teammate.
Erin attended Leesville Road High School and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She was very active in her community, school, and church, having danced (Tap, Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, and Street) for 12 years. Erin was a yearbook editor in 11th grade, Yearbook Ambassador, a member of the National Honor Society Student Council, Choir, the Spanish Club, Spirit Committee, Shepherd's Quake, Teens Encounter Christ, HOPE, Youth Director search Committee, Senior High Servant Team and a church Youth Council Officer. She participated in Track and Field, Powder Puff Football, Crop Walk and MS Walk. She was a dance assistant, a tutor, and a Special Olympics Volunteer. Erin won 2 student choice awards, a US Academy Achievement Award and was nominated for a Morehead Scholarship. Erin chose to be an organ donor and helped save the lives of five others. All the lives she touched were enhanced as a result, and our community is a better place. We love you and we will miss you.
Surviving are her parents, John and Debbie Chaffee of Raleigh; brothers, Ryan of the home and Mathew of Decorah, Iowa; sister, Jill and husband Jeff Grober of Denver, Co.; maternal grandparents, Jean and Russ Seidel of Wyomissing, Pa.; paternal grandmother, Beatrice Dickieson of Sun City, Az.; four aunts; two uncles; ten very special cousins and her God-Parents, Barb and Dave Williams. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Carlton Chaffee.
The funeral service will be 6 p.m. Monday, May 3, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 Creedmoor Road, and will be officiated by Pastors David Sloop, Dave Keck, and Denny Brake. A private burial will be Tuesday morning.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6-9 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Erin Chaffee Fund to support community youth activities. Mail donations in care of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27615.

LEWIS VERNON PARRISH
KNIGHTDALE -- Lewis Vernon Parrish, 77, of #7 Park Avenue, died Saturday, May 1, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. He was President of WETC Radio Station in Wendell-Zebulon, N.C. and former Chief Engineer of WPTF Radio of Raleigh, N.C. Mr. Parrish began his career in radio by maintaining the communications system for the Raleigh Police Department while he was a student of N.C. State University. From this he moved to broadcast engineering for stations in Richmond, Washington, D.C., New York City, and the Mutual Broadcasting System. He spent seven months in Vietnam and five months in Saudi Arabia supervising the construction of high power broadcasting stations for these governments. He has also served as broadcast consultant in Latin America and The Bahamas. Mr. Parrish founded WFTN, Franklin, NH and WETC, Wendell-Zebulon, NC and was a consultant for many radio stations throughout the Eastern United States. Mr. Parrish was past President of the Knightdale Lions Club and member of the Knightdale Baptist Church. Mr. Parrish was the son of the late Eddie V. and Irene Stone Parrish.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at Knightdale Baptist Church. Burial, New Knightdale Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving: sister, Edna P. Lindsey and husband, Hal of Raleigh; brothers, J. Paul Parrish of Spartenburg, S.C., John B. Parrish and wife, Dorothy of Knightdale. Many loved nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Mr. Parrish was preceded in death by his sister, Lottie P. Flowers.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday, May 3, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home of John Bruce and Dorothy Parrish, #3 Park Avenue, Knightdale, NC 27545.

BERNICE KNIGHT DALTON
RALEIGH -- Bernice Knight Dalton, of Raleigh, died Saturday, May 1, 1999. She was born November 13, 1927 in Nelson County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Emmett L. and Winnie G. Knight. She was a retired secretary with the Wake County Public Schools.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road. Interment will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Bernard "Buddy" Dalton; daughter, Kim Hankins and husband Ellis; son, Mark Dalton and wife Judy; three grandchildren, Kate Hankins, Brett Dalton, Travis Dalton, all of Raleigh; sister, Eleanor K. Hilts of Santa Barbara, CA; and brother, Louis M. Knight of Frederick, MD.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 714 E. Whitaker Mill Road, Raleigh, NC 27608.

JOSEPH LOUIS EDER
DURHAM -- Joseph Louis Eder, 73, of 3920 Swarthmore Road, died Friday, April 30th.
He was born and reared in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late John and Rosa Sammer Eder. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 44 years, Ruth Lucas Eder and two brothers, George and John Eder of Maryland. Mr. Eder served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant, having served during the Korean Conflict and in the Vietname War. Following his retirement from the Army in 1968, he and his wife Ruth operated the Hope Valley Rest Home until 1983. Mr. Eder was a member of the Holy Infant Catholic Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Joni E. Burke of Chatham County; two sons, J. Blake Eder of Carrboro and Brian K. Eder of Cary; one sister, Mrs. Rose E. Doster of Nevada; and seven grandchildren.
Liturgy of the Lord's Resurrection will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Monday in Holy Infant Catholic Church. Officiating will be Fr. John McGee OSFS and Fr. Richard Cleary OSFS.
The family will receive friends at Holy Infant Catholic Church from 6:30-7 p.m. and following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Triangle Hospice, 1804 Martin Luther King Pkwy., Durham, NC 27707 or the American Cancer Society, 11 S. Boylan Ave., Raleigh, NC 27603.

MRS. MICHAEL "MIKKI" ELLIOTT
WINSTON-SALEM -- Mrs. Michael "Mikki" Letitia Elliott, 81, died Thursday, April 29, 1999 at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was a former resident of Richmond, VA and recently moved to Winston-Salem. She was born January 3, 1918 in Pulaski, VA to Malcolm Trenton and Bertha Jordan Runyon. Mrs. Elliott was retired from Thalhimer's Department Store where she was a retail buyer for over 20 years. She was a volunteer tour guide for the Virginia Science Museum in Richmond until her health declined.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Saunders Elliott.
Surviving: daughter, Letitia "Tish" Patrick and husband, Jerry of Sparta, NC; granddaughter, Michael "Mika" Letitia Drew and husband, Dr. Julian S. of Raleigh; great grandchildren, Julian Gibson Drew and Ella Letitia Drew, both of Raleigh; sister, Toni Runyon and an uncle, Harold Jordan and wife, Mary, all of Winchester, KY.
A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 2, 1999 at the Chapel at Forsyth Medical Center, 3333 Silas Creek Pkwy., Winston-Salem, officiated by Chaplain Randy Hillman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

DOROTHY "DOLLY" J. HUIZENGA
PINEHURST -- Dorothy "Dolly" Huizenga died on May 1, 1999 at her home in Pinehurst, NC following a long and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Dolly was born in Grand Rapids, MI on July 29, 1924, attended Calvin College and received a R.N. degree from Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids.
She was married to John R. Huizenga on February 1, 1946. Following an initial period in Urbana, IL, the family moved to the Chicago suburbs in 1949, to Rochester, NY in 1967, and retired to Pinehurst, NC in 1994. Sabbaticals were spent in Amsterdam, Paris, Berkeley, Munich and Copenhagen and extended visits were made to Japan and China. Dolly had a keen interest in languages and studied seriously the respective languages of each country prior to and during visits.
Dolly enjoyed reading, painting, pottery (for years she had a potter's wheel and kiln at home), home design and decoration. She designed and decorated her family's homes in the Chicago suburbs, Rochester, NY and her retirement home in Pinehurst, NC which won the Grand Prize from the Moore County Home Builders for 1995.
Dolly is survived by her loving family: husband, Dr. John R. Huizenga; daughters, Linda Huizenga of Los Angeles and Jann Huizenga of Santa Fe, NM (and her husband Kim Crowley); sons, Dr. Robert Huizenga of Los Angeles, CA (and his wife Wanda), and Joel Huizenga of La Jolla, CA; grandchildren, Ashley, Troy and Hayley Huizenga of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Theda Woalkes of Grand Rapids, MI; brother, Donald Koeze of Pinehurst, NC; numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Health Hospice, P.O. Box 1956, Pinehurst, NC 28370.

ROWENA GORDON KEITH
WAKE FOREST -- Rowena Gordon Keith, 85, of 1132 Louisburg Road died Sunday morning in Raleigh Community Hospital. She was born the daughter of the late Joe and Katie Goode Gordon and was preceded in death by her husband, Hassie B. Keith.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Rolesville Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Louisburg.
Surviving are her stepdaughters and their husbands, Emogene and Charles Massey of Wake Forest, Mary Sue and William Stell of Wake Forest; a stepson and his wife, Jerry W. and Cathy Keith of Wake Forest; sisters, Margaret G. Driver of Louisburg and Mary Helen Layton of Wake Forest; three step-grandchildren; and six great-step-grandchildren.
Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions can be made to the Rolesville Baptist Church, Family Center Building Fund, P.O. Box 185, Rolesville, NC 27571.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Bright Funeral Home and all other times at the home of Jerry and Cathy Keith, 1124 Louisburg Road.
