MRS. MARY FRANCES W. MacMILLAN
TEACHEY -- Mrs. Mary Frances Wells MacMillan, 80 of 113 MacMillan St., in Teachey, died Saturday, May 1, 1999 at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. from the Teachey Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Charles Love and Rev. Bob Cornwell. Burial will follow in Rockfish Memorial Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Ray MacMillan of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Brenda Teachey and husband, Grady of Raleigh; one son, Henry D. MacMillan of Wilmington; two grandsons, Wilson Teachey and wife, Nancy of Stedman and Ray Teachey of Greenville; one sister, Mrs. Robert C. (Eloise) Mohr of Wilmington; two brothers, John Franklin Wells and Joe Wells, both of Teachey.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Bill (Charlotte) King.
A native of Duplin County, Mrs. MacMillan was the daughter of the late John Boney and Mary Florence Williams Wells. She was a graduate of Flora MacDonald College and was a member of Teachey Presbyterian Church and Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel of Topsail Beach.
The family suggests those so desiring may make memorial contributions to Teachey Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 156 Teachey, NC 28464 or Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel, Topsail Beach, NC 28445.
The family received at the Padgett Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Sunday and will be at their residence, 113 MacMillan St., in Teachey other times.

GEORGE MADISON MITCHELL JR.
RALEIGH -- George Madison Mitchell Jr., 73, of Raleigh, died Sunday. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Montlawn Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Phipps Mitchell; son, George Madison Mitchell III of Apex; daughter, Patricia Mitchell Oglesby of Garner; sister, Mary Mitchell of Raleigh; and grandchildren, Kim Stewart of Virginia Beach, Scott Oglesby of Smithfield, Jodi Madison Mitchell of Apex.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's St.
Flowers are accepted, those considering memorial contributions may make them to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St. Fourth Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

H. PHILIP NESBITT
KENSINGTON, MD -- H. Philip Nesbitt, 77, of Kensington, Maryland, died April 30, 1999. A private service was held in Virginia.
Survivors: sons, H. Philip Nesbitt, Jr. of Oakton, VA and Jeffrey Nesbitt of Garner, NC; daughters, Debra Blauman of Madison, Ohio, and Kathi Nesbitt of Cary, NC; and eight grandchildren.

FRANCES KATHLEEN MCREE NORWOOD
HICKORY -- Frances Kathleen McRee Norwood, age 82, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at the Abernethy Center in Newton, NC. She was born September 5, 1916, in Catawba County, the daughter of William and Ola Deal McRee.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at the First United Methodist Church in Hickory, NC.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Long Norwood; and brothers, Rev. George McRee, Rev. O. T. McRee, and Marshall McRee..
Survivors: daughter and son-in law, Nancy and John Lambert of Raleigh; son, Don Norwood of Hickory; grandsons, Michael and Wallace Lambert of Raleigh; sister-in-law, Elizabeth McRee; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church/Pastor's Discretionary Fund or World Hunger, 311 3rd Ave. N.E., Hickory, NC 28601.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ORIE HERMAN PEARCE SR.
RALEIGH -- Orie Herman Pearce, Sr., 92, of 417 Colleton Rd., died Friday, April 30, 1999. Mr. Pearce was born in Wake County. Prior to retirement Mr. Pearce was a conductor for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad and General Chairman of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He was a Mason and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge. A son, Orie H. Pearce, Jr., preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are two granddaughters, Susan Pearce Benfield and Beth Pearce both of Raleigh; daughter-in-law, Jacqueline R. Pearce of Raleigh; cousins, Douglas Small and Walter Richardson, both of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday evening at the home of Jacqueline Pearce, 3221 Marie Dr., Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.

ERNEST LEE "BILL" SEWELL JR.
RALEIGH -- Mr. Ernest Lee "Bill" Sewell, Jr., age 61, of English Ivy Lane, Raleigh, and formerly of Hickory, NC, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, in the Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. He was born March 1, 1938, in Erwin, NC, the son of Ernest Lee Sewell, Sr. and Lena Rose Quick Sewell. He graduated from Christ School, Arden, NC, in 1957. He attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, where he played basketball. He graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC; received his Masters from Western Carolina University; taught at Christ School for 17 years where he was head football coach and athletic director; was head coach and athletic director at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh; was the Southeast Commissioner of Babe Ruth Baseball; and was currently serving on the Board of Trustees of Christ School and inducted into the Christ School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. For twenty years he worked for Sirchie Corp. in Raleigh, NC. He was a member of Christ Church in Raleigh.
Survivors: wife, Helen Bass Sewell of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest Lee "Bill" Sewell, III and wife Martha and Edward Scott Sewell and wife Mary-Beth, all of Raleigh; son, George Douglas Sewell, II of Raleigh; brother, George Douglas Sewell of Raleigh; sister, Haffye Sewell Cox of Tarboro; grandson, Ernest Lee Sewell, IV of Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at Christ Church, Raleigh, with the Rev. Dr. Winston Charles officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service. A second memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 1999 at St. Joseph's Chapel, Christ School, Arden, NC, with burial following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bill Sewell Scholarship Fund, 500 Christ School Road, Arden, NC 28704.

ESTHER T. SLATER
FUQUAY-VARINA -- Esther Virginia Svendsen Tant Slater, 52, a machine operator for 26 years with Lufkin Rule Co., died Sunday. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sugg Funeral Home Chapel in Fuquay-Varina. Burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: husband, Paul Slater; daughters, Shirley Tant Davis and husband Travis, Anna Moore all of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jessie Lee Davis, Travis Dustin Davis, and Brandon Joseph Davis; brother, Arne Carl Svendsen of Smithfield; sisters, Frieda Avery and husband Donnie, Sandra Upchurch and husband Timmy all of Angier.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Sugg Funeral Home.

LAURA WOOD WHITE
RALEIGH -- Miss Laura Wood White, 85, of Barmettler Street, died Friday, April 30th. A lifelong resident of Raleigh, she is survived by her brother, Col. A. Wray White (Ret.), Terrance Park, OH and a niece, Catharine B. White of Skokie, IL.
She was employed as an administrator with Selective Service for the State of North Carolina. A memorial service will held 2 p.m. Monday, May 3, 1999 in the Chapel of The Annunciation, Christ Church. Memorials gifts may be made to Christ Church, P.O. Box 25778, Raleigh, NC 27611 or to a favorite charity.

RICKEY HAROLD WILLIAMSON
TUPELO, MS -- Rickey Harold Williamson, 47, died Saturday at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Tupelo.
He was a native and longtime resident of Chadbourn and had lived 14 years in Sanford, before moving to Tupelo last year. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Chadbourn and was a member of the North Carolina Board of Realtors.
Services were held 5 p.m. Sunday in the Jefferson Street chapel of W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors in Tupelo with Rev. Mike Sahler officiating. Additional service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Corinth Baptist Church with Rev. Elmore Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Vickie Green Williamson of Tupelo; one daughter, Holly Dianne Williamson of Wilmington; one son, Justin Grant Williamson of Chadbourn; his mother, Blanche Larrimore Williamson of Chadbourn; three sisters, Emily Mooneyhan and her husband, Al of Sanford, Gathel Martin and her husband, Charlie of Chadbourn, and Betty Kelly and her husband, Kenneth of Whiteville.
He is preceded in death by his father, John Isom Williamson.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.

JOE ARTHUR HAYES
RALEIGH -- Joe Arthur Hayes, son of the late Matthew Hayes and Josephine H. Hayes, went from labor to reward on Monday, May 3, 1999. He was born in Franklinton, North Carolina on July 18, 1933.
Joe was a kind and loving person. He accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of the First Baptist Church in Franklinton, North Carolina. Joe remained a member there until he joined The Martin Street Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina in December, 1998. In 1960, Joe married Gladys Deloris Plenty. To this union a daughter was born: Denise Hayes DeLapp.
Joe received his early education from B. F. Person Elementary School, Franklinton, North Carolina and the Governor Morehead School (Garner Road Campus). After graduating from the Governor Morehead School, Joe enrolled at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (A & T), Greensboro, NC. He graduated with honors.
Joe's teaching career included: teaching at the Governor Morehead School, education specialist at Caledonia Correctional Center at Tillery, NC. After teaching at Caledonia for five years, he became an education specialist with the N.C. Department of Correction (Central Prison), Raleigh, North Carolina. He remained there until he retired.
Joe served in many supervisory capacities during his educational career. He was a member of many organizations. They included: former president and board member of The Raleigh Wake Chapter of The American Council of the Blind, board member of the Friends of the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, a former member of the Advisory Committee for Parks and Recreation Special Programs for the Visually Impaired.
Joe will be greatly missed by the members of the D.P. Social Club; this group is composed of dear friends who love and support each other in many, many ways.
Joe was loved and respected by his community. Bright and early on New Year's mornings, he would knock on neighbors' doors and wish them a Happy New Year. He will be missed!
He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Gladys Plenty Hayes; his daughter, Denise Hayes DeLapp and son-in-law Reuben of Garner, NC; two grandchildren, Kalen and Kendall DeLapp; two brothers, Melvin Hayes (Lou), Franklinton, NC and Cleotha Hayes (Marvie), Garner, NC.
The funeral service will be Saturday, May 8, at Noon at the Martin Street Baptist Church, 1001 E. Martin Street, Raleigh, NC 27601. Dr. Charles T. Bullock will be presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 11 a.m.-Noon on Saturday, May 8, 1999. Interment takes place at Carolina Biblical Gardens. Arrangements by Haywood Funeral Home.

MILDRED SNEAD ALLEN
FOUR OAKS -- Mildred Snead Allen, 85, of 1951 Strickland Crossroads Rd., Four Oaks, NC died Thursday at home. She was a sales clerk. She was born in Johnston County on Nov. 30, 1913 to the late Fulton & Vonnie Creech Snead. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at Pauline Baptist Church. Rev. Terry Batten, Rev. Eugene Clayton, and Rev. Niles Compton officiating. Burial, church cemetery. She was preceded in death by spouse Paul Allen.
Surviving: sisters, Surles Allen of Four Oaks, NC, Lois Massengill of Four Oaks, NC; special brothers-in-law, Hugh Allen of Four Oaks, NC, James Massengill of Four Oaks, NC; special sisters-in-law, Pauline McLamb of Four Oaks, NC; nieces, Ann Allen of Wilmington, NC, Johnnie Sue Lee of Four Oaks, NC; Von Karen Allen of Four Oaks, NC.
Family at Minshew Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Friday.

J. SAM BRAKE
ROCKY MOUNT -- J. Sam Brake, 82, died Thursday. He was born in Edgecombe County, June 16, 1916, son of the late Joseph Luther and Emma Fly Brake. Mr. Brake was a retired farmer, an Edgecombe County Attendance Counselor, Elder of the Second Presbyterian Church, A Lay Preacher of Presbyterian, and a volunteer with Adaptive Swimming Program at the YMCA of Rocky Mount.
Surviving: wife, Emma Stanton Brake of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Al Purvis of Tifton, GA, Evelyn and Marshall Weems of Franklin, TN; son and daughter-in-law, Sam Jr. and Judy Brake of Beaufort, NC; eight grandchildren: sister, Jean B. Edge and brother, Robert Earl Brake both of Rocky Mount.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bettie Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Brake Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home, Fairview Road, and other times at the home 3232 Cokey Road.
Memorials may be made to the Second Presbyterian Church, 1200 Old Wilson Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27801.

KATHERINE BRITTAIN
RALEIGH -- Katherine Brittain, beloved wife and mother of 7321 Ridge Grove Court, Raleigh, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999 at Rex Hospital after a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Rev. William Henry Brittain in 1990. Katherine was an artist, a member of the Cary Art Assoc. and the Sertoma Artist and has participated in exhibitions both here and in New England.
She is survived by her son, William H. Brittain and his wife, Kathleen of Chicago, IL; daughters, Karen Brittain LaRosa and her husband, Charles of Framingham, MA; Lisbeth Brittain Carter and husband, Jon Michael Carter of Raleigh; grandson, Frederick Loring Britain and his wife, Denise; great-grandson, Lucas Michael Brittain, all of Farmington, Maine; brother, Bruno Kolhonen of Simsbury, CT.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 1999 at Millbrook United Methodist Church, 1712 E. Millbrook Rd.
An internment service will be held at the graveside in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of your choice.
