ALICE B. MASON
WILSON -- Alice Bell Mason, 87, a native of Hyde County, died Tuesday. Funeral 1 p.m. Friday, Thomas-Yelverton Funeral chapel, Wilson. Interment, 3 p.m. Friday, Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington.
Surviving is her daughter, Juanita Nelson with whom she lived; son, Glenn Mason of Wilmington; sister, Margaret Elizabeth Cahoon of Washington; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.
VIRGINIA SNYDER NEWSOME
AHOSKIE, NC -- Virginia Snyder Newsome, 70, of the 1000 block of Colony Ave., died October 6, 1999, in her home, after a long illness.
Mrs. Newsome was a native of Davidson County and was a member of First Baptist Church, Ahoskie. She was a graduate of North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and was retired from Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie. She was the daughter of the late Paul A. Snyder of Winston-Salem.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Alvin C. Newsome of Ahoskie; a daughter, Dr. Suzanne Newsome of Lewisville, NC; two sons, A. Creech Newsome Jr. and his wife, Jan, of Houston, TX, David W. Newsome and his wife, Debbie, of Winston-Salem, NC; her mother, Mrs. Ree P. Snyder of Winston-Salem, NC; two sisters, Dorothy S. Berrier and Gerlene S. Graham both of Winston-Salem, NC; a brother, Jack S. Snyder of Lexington, NC; and grandchildren, Robert, Paul, Daniel, David Jr. and Jennifer Newsome.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Ahoskie First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom.

MARY DOBBINS PAYNE
RALEIGH -- Mary Dobbins Payne, 76, of 4807-A Hollenden Drive, died Tuesday, October 5, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital. Graveside service 11 a.m. Friday, October 8, 1999 at New Knightdale Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving: husband, Charles Payne; son, Eric Payne and his wife, Patricia of Raleigh; daughter, Karen P. Starkey of Raleigh; grandchildren, Dorie, Emily, Trae, Kelly; great-grandchild, Tyler.

MARY LEWIS PEELER
RALEIGH -- Mary Lewis Peeler of Raleigh, 90, died on September 21, 1999 at Glenaire of Cary. She was born on March 25, 1909 in Randolph County.
She was predeceased by her husband, R.J. Peeler, Sr. and her son, R James Peeler, Jr. and Thomas Frederick Peeler.
Surviving: daughter-in-law, Shirley Hodge Peeler of Raleigh; grandsons, R. James Peeler, III of New Bern, John Thomas Peeler of Raleigh; great-grandchildren, Shelby and James Peeler, both of New Bern, Kendall and Manning Peeler, both of Raleigh.
She was a member of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years. During that time, she served as Pastor's Aide, and she was a lifetime member of Women of the Church. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 8, 1999 at 11 a.m. at West Raleigh Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Montlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to N.C. Hurricane Relief Fund.
ELIZABETH S. POE
RALEIGH -- Elizabeth Shigley Poe, 86, died Monday at the Stewart Health Center. She was born in Fremont, Michigan, the daughter of Roy and Ora Monroe Shigley, and graduated from Michigan State University. She taught school in Michigan for five years before coming to Raleigh, where she was active in the Junior League and many other organizations and clubs.
Her husband, Charles A. Poe died in 1994. Her only sibling her brother Monroe, passed away just two weeks ago.
Surviving are three children, Betsy Sharp of Boulder, CO, Mary Twitchell and husband, James of Gainesville, FL, Charles Poe, Jr. and wife, Patricia of Raleigh. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Tracy Sharp Clement, Suzy Sharp, Mike Sharp, Kate Twitchell, Elizabeth Twitchell, Toby Poe and Hamilton Poe; one great-grandson, Travis Clement; two sisters-in-law, Mary Graham Shigley and Rosalie Richardson Poe; seven nieces and nephews.
The family will be at the home of her son at 3033 Granville Drive.
The funeral service will be at Christ Episcopal Church, 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

CLARKTON -- Herman Tart, 86, of Tart Rd., died Tuesday, at Rex Hospital. She was a member of Western Prong Baptist Church.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday, Western Prong Baptist Church, with Dr. Leon Thomas officiating. Burial, Western Prong Church Cemetery.
Visitation from 7-9 p.m. Thursday McKenzie Mortuary.
Survivors: daughter, Mary Grey T. Porter of Raleigh; daughter, Ann T. Young of Bladenboro; sister, Lalan T. Lennon of Wilmington; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
JUDITH M. LONG
RALEIGH -- Judith Moore Long was born February 18, 1932 in Atlanta, GA and was the only child of Annie Laurie Kytle Moore and Andrew Jackson Moore. Her family moved to North Carolina in 1946. She attended Central High School in Charlotte and Meredith College in Raleigh. While attending Meredith, she met and married Donald Scott Long of Roxboro, who was a student at N.C. State University. During her many years in Raleigh, Judy joined a bridge club which now has occasional social gatherings. She and her husband also have been members of a small supper club which has been meeting over 45 years. Since she was an only child, she felt a special kinship with this group - that of brothers and sisters. They are Panky and Hilliard Greene, Margaret and Bob Morrison and Dottie and George Blum.
She is survived by her loving husband, Donald Scott Long; son, Donald Scott Long Jr. and his wife Maureen Matt Long; two grandchildren, James Zachary "Jake" Long and Christina Lauren Long all of Raleigh; cousin, Jack Lassiter and his family of Macon, GA; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m Tuesday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. on Monday.

FORREST EDWARD NEWKIRK SR.
FUQUAY-VARINA -- Forrest Edward Newkirk, Sr. of 128 Bridge St., Fuquay-Varina, NC passed away on Saturday morning, October 30, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital. Funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 3, 1999, at New Providence Baptist Church. His wake will be observed on Tuesday evening at the church from 7-8 p.m. Burial takes place at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh, NC.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Bullock Newkirk; sons, Forrest, Jr. and Gregory (wife-Terri) of Fuquay-Varina; Roderick (wife-Irish) and Sherwood of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jennifer M. Bush, Lewis and Lane Newkirk; sister, Anna Newkirk-Pratt, of Washington, DC; brother, George Newkirk (wife-Shirley) of Raleigh; aunt, Louise Newkirk of Raleigh; 13 nieces, three nephews.

KATHRYN MARIE BARBER
CLINTON -- Mrs. Kathryn Marie Barber, 85, of Mary Gran Nursing Center, died Saturday, October 30, 1999, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Hugh Cameron officiating. Burial will be in the Clinton Cemetery.
She was native of Chatham County, the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Lydia Womble Barber. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was the Treasurer for the city of Clinton for forty two years and a graduate of Duke University.
She was preceded in death by two sisters: Lena B. White Kerr and Bertha B. Senter; four brothers, Marvin Barber, Noah Barber, Edward Barber and Joseph Barber.
She is survived by niece; Jane Barber Carr of Bethesda, MD; nephew, Ronald E. Barber and his wife Sandra of Columbia, SC; nephew, Paul Barber White of Raleigh and his wife Sara of Raleigh; sister-in-law, Lew Evelyn Barber of Southwood and many great nephews and nieces as well as several grand nephews and nieces.
ZELA MANGUM BLALOCK
OCT. 27, 1904 - OCT. 30, 1999
ANGIER -- Zela Mangum Blalock, 95, of Brookfield Retirement Center of Lillington died Saturday, October 30, 1999. She was a member of the Angier Memorial United Methodist Church for over 60 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Pierce Blalock, and her son, Milton Cheek Blalock.
She is survived by her daughters, Sylvia B. Elliott of Summerfield and Evelyn B. Walters and husband, Marvin L. Walters of Raleigh; son, Donald R. Blalock and wife, Ann P. Blalock of Colfax and daughter-in-law, Ramona M. Blalock; seven grandchildren, Andy E. Blalock, George Elliott, Johnna Ruth Elliott, D. Flay Blalock, Doyle F. Blalock, Tanya W. Williams, Teresa W. Adams; six great-grandchildren, Andrea Blalock, Jennie Elliott, Alex Williams, Jeremy Williams, Colton Williams and Jacquelyn Mann.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 2, 1999, at the Angier Memorial United Methodist Church with burial following at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday, November 1, 1999, at Overby-Johnson Funeral Home in Angier.

DAVID DEXTER HILLIARD
CARY -- David Dexter Hilliard age 72 of Cary, NC died at Rex Hospital Saturday, October 30, 1999. He was retired with Exide Electronics and a native of Wake Co.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 2, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the New Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, New Hill, NC. Officiating will be Rev. Lalon Barnes.
Survivors are: his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Hilliard of the home; two sons, Bobby Ray Hilliard, Sr. of Zebulon, NC and Kenneth Earl Hilliard and wife Martha of Clayton, NC; a daughter, Ann Douglas and husband Ray of Holly Springs, NC; three brothers, William Hilliard and wife Faye of Dallas, Texas, Cary Hilliard and wife Myrtle of Sanford, NC, James R. Hilliard and wife Barbara of Plano, Texas; sister, Ruby Womble of New Hill, NC; four grandchildren.

MARY CLARE JACKSON
CHAPEL HILL -- Mary Clare Carruth Jackson of Chapel Hill, died Oct. 11 at Britthaven of Chapel Hill. She was 87 and suffered from Alzheimer's Disease. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia.
Born in Coral, Ms, she grew up in Canton, Ms, and graduated from Mississippi State College for Women (now Mississippi University for Women). She lived for many years in Rosedale, Ms, and was an elementary school teacher before joining the Mississippi Department of Public Welfare, first as a social worker and then as a county director. She retired in 1977.
She was an avid bridge player, an excellent seamstress, and an active member of the Democratic Party. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. After moving to Chapel Hill in 1985, she continued to enjoy playing bridge for several years after her diagnosis of Alzheimer's. In Chapel Hill, she was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family.
She was the widow of James Fenimore Jackson, Jr. of Rosedale and leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Eleanor Jackson Howe and Dan Howe of Chapel Hill, Clare Jackson Tufts and Rutledge Tufts of Durham; grandsons, Chaney Howe of Chapel Hill, Willy and Jackson Tufts of Durham; sister, Jane Fortenberry of Decatur, GA; numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in Rosedale, Ms, on Nov. 13 at Grace Episcopal Church, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places through her efforts.
