GARNER -- James Mossie Mitchell, Jr., 69, of 499 Cornwallis Rd., died Sunday, February 14. Services, Wednesday 2:00 p.m. at McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. L.E. Godwin officiating.
He is survived by son, Kenneth Mitchell of Four Oaks; daughter, Patricia Markham of Garner; sisters, Margie M. Puryear of Smithfield, Janie M. Evans of Wilson and Hazel M. Beckwith of Raleigh; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Family will receive friends Tuesday 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

JAMES J. NEWKIRK
RALEIGH -- Mr. James Junior Newkirk, 81, of 3609 Bond Street, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. Funeral 12 noon, Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 at New Providence Baptist Church, Fuquay-Varina. Burial, church cemetery.
Survivors: wife, Mrs. Louise Newkirk; daughters, Swannie Marie Chavis, Mary Magdalene Farrington (Mack Jr.), JoAnna Brice (Haywood Lee), Rev. Libby Bethea (John), Brenda K. Dunn and Gretchel Newkirk-Carter; sons, Richard Matthew (Rosa), Cleveland (Joette), Ronald (Queen) and Joel (Jewel), all of Raleigh; 44 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation 11-12 prior to funeral.

PAUL M. OBER
EDENTON -- Mr. Paul Milton Ober, 91, of the 2300 block of Rocky Hock Road, died Sunday, February 14, 1999 at his home. A native of Canton, Ohio, Mr. Ober was the husband of the late Blanche White Ober and a son of the late Daisy Nunnamaker and David J. Ober.
Mr. Ober was a retired farmer, a member of the Rocky Hock Baptist Church and a charter member of the first Rocky Hock Rurtian Club. He was a former Republican Election Board Judge, and a former Mason with the Unanimity Lodge #7. Mr. Ober was a member of the Southern Modena Pigeon Club, and the National Modena Pigeon Club and had achieved the award of Master Breeder.
He is survived by daughters, Faye Ober of Edenton, Frances O. Merritt of Hertford, Mary Ellen Boyce of South Hill, VA, Patsy Sheppard of Portsmouth, VA; sons, David Ober of Edenton, Carl Ober ofRoper and Scot Ober of Carmel, IN; 22 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Ober and a brother, George Ober.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Rocky Hock Baptist Church by the Rev. Ron Cava. Burial will follow in the family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Evans Funeral Home, Tuesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the residence of David Ober, 2230 Rocky Hock Rd.
Memorials may be made to the Rocky Hock Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 113 Rocky Hock Church Rd., Edenton, NC 27932.

HARRY PILOS SR.
RALEIGH -- A funeral service for Harry Pilos, Sr. will be held Wednesday 10 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 5000 Leadmine Road. The burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's St.

OLIVER A. "BOBBY" THOMAS, JR.
ZEBULON -- Oliver A. "Bobby" Thomas, 67, retired Postmaster with the US Postal Service, died Saturday. Mr. Thomas was a Navy Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels of Wake County. Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday, Zebulon Baptist Church. Burial, Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: wife, Susan M. Thomas of the home; mother, Lillian K. Thomas of Raleigh; daughters, Deborah Clements of New Bern, Tina Shoaf of Knightdale; son, Oliver Austin Thomas, III of Winston Salem; step-daughters, Laura Dellinger of Raleigh, Amy Jackson of Greenville; sister, Mable Wall, Betsy Wall, both of Raleigh, Sue Hall of Clayton; brother, Jimmy Thomas of Raleigh; granddaughter, Ashley Gregory of Savannah, GA; special buddy, "Putter" of the home. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his father, Oliver A. Thomas, Sr. and his brother, Jerry and Harry Thomas.

LECY ANN WEST
ROCKY MOUNT -- Lecy Ann West, 99, died Sunday, February 14, 1999. She was born June 19, 1899, daughter of the late Oliver and Martha Ann Yarbough Stallings. Mrs. Stallings was preceded in death by her husband, Roger West. She was a member of Peoples Fellowship Baptist Church.
Surviving: daughter, Madelyn Boone of Nashville; sons, Marvin West of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Wayne Mercer of Cary, Roger West of Edenville, Washington, Ray West of Red Oak, Ricky West of Rocky Mount; great-grandchildren, Melanie Moseley, Lori Moseley, Kelsey Mercer, Mandi West, Eric West, Shawn West, Staci West, Allison West; sister, Rhada Matthews of Momeyer.
She was preceded in death by her son, James O. West, her daughters, Lessie Mercer and Mary Cook, and granddaughter, Barbara Boone Moseley.
Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson Funeral home, Sunset Avenue with Dr. W.D. "Bill" Ezzell and Rev. Dougald McLaurin officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

MARTIN L. WHITE
PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- Martin Luther White, 77, of 300 block of Charlotte Drive, a retired painter for Norfolk Naval Shipyard, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999. He was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church, native of Martin County and an Army Veteran of WWII.
Survivors: wife, Jane Poole White; daughters, Brenda Ann Homsher of Portsmouth, Connie Ruth Scott of Chesapeake; sister, Ruby Davis of Oak City, N.C.; brother, Robert Lee White of Oak City, N.C.; grandchildren, Deborah Johnson of Portsmouth, Kimberly Zoladkiewicz of Hampton, Rickey Scott and Joey Scott, both of Chesapeake; nephew, Gene Powell of Robersonville, N.C.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Wed., Feb. 17, 1999 at Pinecrest Baptist Church. The Rev. Tom Potter officiating. Burial, Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation, Tuesday from 7-8 p.m. in Loving Funeral Home.

LEO WILTON WILLIAMS
WAKE FOREST -- Leo Wilton "Fatty" Williams, 71 of Wake Forest died Sunday, February 14, 1999 at the VA Medical Center in Durham. Mr. Williams was retired from the U.S. Air Force.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest.
Surviving are: his wife, Alma Perry Williams of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Emily W. Ennis and Steve of Wake Forest; son, Gary L. Williams of the home; sister and brother-in-law, Hilda W. Hayes and Clarence of Raleigh; two step grandchildren, Jessica Ennis of Middlesex and Steve Ennis, Jr. of Zebulon; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh on Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m.

APPIE W. WILSON
GARNER -- Appie Lenora Watson Wilson, daughter of the late Rufus and Ada Atkinson Watson, died February 11, 1999.
Surviving: daughter, Mary Wilson Dixon; four sons, James (Roxie) of Raleigh, Norman (Audrey), Shelton (Magdeline) and Booker T., all of Plainfield N.J.; brother, Percy Watson (Alice) of Garner; four sisters-in-law, Hattie Watson of Raleigh, Ethel Watson of Garner, Della Haggins of Newark, N.J. and Mertie Holder of Wendell; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Also surviving are two special friends, Nellie Cook and Ola Smith.
Funeral service 1 p.m. Tuesday, Poplar Springs United Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Visitation 12:30-1 p.m. prior to the service.

REBECCA S. WOOD
APEX -- Rebecca Stone Wood, 74, of 903 Towhee Drive, Apex, died Monday at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Haden Wood, in 1998.
Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 17, at 11 a.m. in the Apex Cemetery. Mrs. Wood is survived by two sons, Russell Hearn of Apex, Timmy Hearn of Chapel Hill; daughter, Phyllis Plummer of Chapel Hill; five brothers, David Stone, Frank Stone and Pete Stone, all of Moncure, Clyde Stone of Raleigh, Joe Stone of Durham; sister, Shirley Poe of Pittsboro; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Apex Funeral Home, 511 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55) and other times at Mrs. Wood's Home.

SHADE A. WOOTEN SR.
Nov. 18, 1925 - Feb. 14, 1999
CARY -- Shade A. Wooten Sr., 73, died Sunday evening at Rex Hospital due to an extended illness. He was born in Johnston County and came to Raleigh in 1952. He retired from Flu-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation in 1994 as manager of the Warehouse and Storage Division. Mr. Wooten was a veteran of World War II and served as a master sergeant in Japan. In 1981, Mr. Wooten was appointed to the N.C. Veterans Affairs Commission by Governor Jim Hunt and served four years. He was the past commander of Cary American Legion Post 67 and also a member of the 40 and 8. He was also a member of the Cary Masonic Lodge and Amran Shrine Temple. Mr. Wooten had been a member of the Young Men's Bible Class at First United Methodist Church in Cary.
He is survived by his wife, Becky Wooten and two children, Shade A. "Chip" Wooten Jr. and wife, Melody of Cary, B.J. Gibbs and husband, John of Waxhaw; four grandchildren, Shade Allen Wooten III and Bryant Hampton Wooten of Cary, Lindsay Patricia Gibbs and John Gordon Gibbs IV of Waxhaw; brother, Cecil C. "Chuck" Wooten of Raleigh; sister, Mrs. Lillian West of Greensboro.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Jack B. Wooten Jr. and Worth Amos Wooten.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Cary by the Reverend Douglas Jessee. Entombment will be in Montlawn Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund at First United Methodist Church of Cary, 117 Academy St. 27511.
The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

DANIEL L. ADAMS
JAN 26, 1965 - MAY 24, 1999
RALEIGH -- A memorial will be held by his good friend Dennis Bell in memory of Daniel L. Adams, 34, who went to heaven, on May 24, 1999. A beloved friend to all and had a love for the out-of-doors and all creatures great and small. Daniel's memorial will be held at Shelly Lake at 10:00 on July 10, 1999, to the right of the Sertoma Arts Ctr. All are welcome to attend who knew Daniel and your comments and prayers are welcomed. Please follow the memorial signs and dress casual.

PEANIE WILLIAMS BLIZZARD
BEULAVILLE -- Peanie Williams Blizzard, age 90, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Blizzard, and son, Stanley Blizzard.
Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 1999 at the Beulaville Presbyterian Church. Burial, Hallsville Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors: four daughters, Rovene Woodard, Jacksonville, NC, Joyce Fry, Carolyn Miller and Wanda Langston, all of Beulaville, NC; five sons, George Williams, Perry Williams, Sidney Blizzard, Sandy Blizzard, and Samuel Blizzard, all of Beulaville, NC; brother, Eake Williams, Beulaville, NC; 28 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 1999 at Community Funeral Home of Beulaville, other times at the home.
Memorial donations may be made to the church or charity of your choice.

CHARLES LEONARD BRIGGS JR.
CARY -- Charles Leonard Briggs, Jr. of Cary, formerly of Valdese, died Wednesday, July 7th at Western Wake Hospital after a long illness. Born in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of the late Charles Leonard Briggs, Sr. and Elda Pascal Briggs. He served as Police Chief of Cary from 1967 to 1972 and was the Chief building and fire inspector for the City of Cary until his retirement. He was a member of American Legion Post 234 in Valdese and VFW.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joan B. Baird.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hughey Briggs; daughters, Cheri Sutton of Lenoir, Tammy Badalamenti of Cary; sisters, Pamela B. Strickland of Raleigh, Maxine B. Hightower of Valdese; two grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 1999 at Family Funeral Care, Kirksey Chapel in Valdese with Rev. Paul H. Felker officiating. Interment will follow the service at Hillcrest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday morning prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.
