CHARLES R. McNEILL SR.
MOREHEAD CITY -- Charles Russell McNeill Sr., passed away on the evening of Friday, May 14, 1999, at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Monday, May 17, 1999, at the First United Methodist Church in Morehead City, with Dr. Milton Gilbert officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
The son of George Raymond McNeill and Ida Jane Russell, Charles was born on June 8, 1920 in Whiteville.
His education included time at the College of Charleston, SC, which he left in 1942 to fulfill an appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. Following graduation from Kings Point, he served in the U.S. Maritime Service and U.S. Naval Reserve, through the war years and in all theaters of World War II.
Following the war, Charles returned to his native Whiteville to work in the family pharmacy, the oldest family-owned pharmacy in the state. It was during this time that he met and married Frances Sansbury of Timmonsville, SC. The couple had their first two children in Whiteville, Janice Cameron and Charles "Chuck" Russell.
In 1957, Charles accepted a job as assistant operations manager at the NC State Ports Authority Port Terminal at Morehead City. He later became operations manager, working for the Port Authority for a total of 17 years. It was during this time that Charles and Frances had their third child, Neil Angus.
In 1975, Charles was appointed as the only employee of a small, poorly-funded, and virtually unknown state museum called the Hampton Mariners Museum. Over a few years he developed this rented-storefront museum into a nationally recognized institution.
His vision for the museum was to expand its focus to include maritime history as well as coastal natural history. Under his direction, the museum received full state funding and erected its firs permanent building under the new name of the North Carolina Maritime Museum, with Charles as its Curator.
During this period, the museum earnedaccreditation from both the American Association of Museums and the Council of American Maritime Museums. Further representing the depth of his involvement in the life of this museum, he negotiated the donation of land for the new museum building and also the museum's nearby Watercraft Center. The many special programs he developed and implemented included the Wooden Boat Show, Summer Science School for Children, and Boatbuilding Skills Program, all of which continue to this day.
His commitment to the preservation of the state's maritime history and his understanding of the influence of the coastal environment on the culture was the foundation for the museum's mission today.
Charles retired from the Museum in 1987. On December 14, 1997, the Museum honored his vision and commitment by dedicating its library as the Charles R. McNeill Maritime Library.
Throughout all of Charles' previously described history, he also maintained another significant career as a watercolor artist. This began quite early, and continued even aboard ship during the war years. Thus the body of his work includes exotic places like Baghdad and Dar es Salaam, as well as his beloved Lake Waccamaw, NC and of course, Carteret County. His paintings have been shown in Atlanta, GA, Charleston, SC; the National Watercolor Society Galleries in NY, as well as numerous local NC Art Shows. For many NC residents, he is best known for his scenes of Cape Lookout, waterfront boats and docks, and salt marshes.
Charles also had an array of other hobbies and interests including woodworking and carving, model ship building, fly fishing, gardening, and bonsai tree culture.
A man of many talents, his gentle nature, sense of community, and desire to inform and entertain others endeared him to everyone.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; sons, Charles and Neil; daughter, Jan; brothers, John and Hector; grandsons, Roddy and Cameron.
The family encourages donations in his memory to the International Multiple Myeloma Foundation, or to the Charles R. McNeill Endowment at the NC Maritime Museum.
Arrangements by Munden Funeral Home and Crematory, Morehead City.
