RACHEL F. RAWLS
RALEIGH -- Rachel F. Rawls, Ph.D., of 2209 The Circle, died suddenly on May 18, 1999.
She was the daughter of Ernest Wyatt Fulton and Mabel Petree Fulton of Winston-Salem.
Her husband, Dr. Horace D. Rawls, preceded her in death.
Born on February 9, 1922 in Walnut Cove, North Carolina, her early life was spent in Winston-Salem. She was graduated Summa Cum Laude from Meredith College, received her Master of Science degree from N.C. State University and her Ph.D. from the George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Rawls taught in Wake County Schools and was employed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. She joined the faculty of the North Carolina School for the Blind (The Governor Morehead School) in 1945 where she worked as psychologist and councilor becoming Director of Research in 1965.
She was Professor Emerita of the Department of Psychology at North Carolina State University where she had been a leader in the School Psychology program. A licensed, practicing psychologist, she continued her work for several years after her retirement, largely in the area of special education. Dr. Rawls was especially well known throughout North Carolina for her work in the field of visual impairment.
Her professional and special interest affiliations, spanning several decades, include the following: Board Member of the North Carolina Commission for the Blind; New Bern Avenue Day Care Center Board of Directors; Past President and Board of the Sir Walter Lioness Club; Past President and Board, Wake County Genealogical Society; Board of the North Carolina Friends of the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped; Board of the Gamma Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; and the Human Rights Committee of The Governor Morehead School. She was a longtime member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. In the mid-eighties friends and professionals in the field of visual impairment honored Dr. Rawls by establishing an annual award, "The Rachel Rawls Award" to recognize an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of visual impairment in North Carolina.
An educational fund was also established in her name for professional development of students and employees in the field of visual impairment. She was honored upon her retirement from North Carolina State by the establishment of a scholarship fund in school psychology.
Dr. Rawls will be lovingly remembered as Rachel by her friends and longtime associates, who will miss her kindness and generosity, her spirit of volunteerism, her keen mind, and her laughter. She loved children and animals, especially cats, reading, and genealogy, and would put aside everything to help a friend.
Dr. Rawls is survived by Kay and Bill Walter of Raleigh, Bill Walter III of Costa Mesa, California, and first cousins, Jonathan Fulton of Winston-Salem, Wilbur Fulton of Seven Lakes, Martha Fulton Wycke of Shelby, Nancy Fulton Kelley of Greensboro, Ray Burke of Kernersville, Elsie Burke Menzel of Durant, Oklahoma, Jane McKinney Deggs of Greensboro, William Hester of Belews Creek, Jean Hester Clark of Winston-Salem, Ruth Hester of Charlotte and Helen Fulton Elliott of Kernersville.
Family will receive friends on Thursday evening, May 20, from 7-9 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Saint Mary's Street.
The graveside service will be held on Friday, May 21, at Montlawn Cemetery at 1 p.m.
Family and friends are invited to gather at 2209 The Circle following the service.

RUBY LEE TART
CHAPEL HILL -- Ruby Lee Tart, 82, formerly of Dunn, NC, and Sherman, Texas, died earlyWednesday, May 19. Mrs. Tart was born in Wilson Mills in Johnston County on April 7, 1917.She was the daughter of the late Jim and Rena McLeod Lee.She marriedFelton W. Tart in 1943 and they lived in Dunn for over forty years.Sheworked as a bookkeeper and tobacco market office manager while helping herhusband run Tart's Grocery on 301 South until he died in 1983. She was anactive member of Hood Memorial Christian Church and the Long Branch HomeDemonstration Club.In 1987, she married Thomas D. Griffin of Sherman,Texas, where they lived together happily until his death in 1996.Shebecame a much beloved member of the Forest Avenue Baptist Church whereThomas had been active for many years.In 1997, she moved to Chapel Hillto be near her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Tart Maultsby and husband, Timothy,of Chapel Hill; Helen Lee Tart and husband, Donald Pickett, of Raleigh;sister, Eunice L. Lee of Raleigh; step-daughters, Ena Knapp and husband,Richie, of Grand Prairie, Texas; Debbie Doty of Denison, Texas; Jim Griffinand wife, Donna, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Lee Griffin and wife, Celia, ofTulsa; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, eleven nephews and tennieces and their families.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, and the funeral willbe held at 2 P.M. Friday at the Skinner Funeral Home in Dunn.

BEULAVILLE -- Doris "DB" Basden, 75, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999 at home. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday, May 21, 1999 at Community Funeral Home Chapel, Beulaville. Burial, Oak Ridge Memorial Park, Pink Hill.
Surviving: wife, Irene Basden of Beulaville; daughter, Marilyn Whaley of Cary; two sons, Douglas Roger Basden Sr. of Beulaville, Kenneth Earl Basden of Fuquay-Varina; four sisters, Mollie Hall of Gibsonville, Dorothy Mae Quinn of Jacksonville, Margaret Jarman of Jacksonville, Margie Puffenberger of Statesville; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

BLACK CREEK --Charles "Lack" Bedford, 82, retired carpenter, died Wednesday.
Funeral, Friday 11 a.m., Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Chapel, Wilson. Interment, Ferrell Cemetery, near the home.
Surviving: wife, Mary Ann Bass Bedford; son, Billy Ray Bedford of Wilson; sisters, Juanita Crawford of Pinkney and Lillian Radford of Princeton; three grandchildren.

BENSON -- Elder Seba Clifton, 80, of 745 Parrish Rd., Benson, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999. Mr. Clifton was a Primitive Baptist Minister and had served several churches in the Benson Area.

NAHUNTA -- Betty Jean Edgerton, 47, who had recently been appointed as the minister of the Chatham Friends meeting, Snow Camp, died Tuesday at her home in Snow Camp.
Funeral 4 p.m. Friday, Nahunta Friends Meeting near Pikeville. Interment, Nahunta Cemetery.
Surviving is her father, Douglas M. Edgerton; sister and her husband, Janet and Perry Sumner of Goldsboro; brother, Shelton Edgerton of Nahunta.

LUNA W. ELLIOTT
FUQUAY-VARINA -- Luna Warren Elliott, 94, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999 on her 94th birthday. Funeral service 4 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 1999 at Thomas Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, Wake Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Elliott was a native of Alexander County, NC where she was born May 18, 1905 to the late Lafayette and Otilla Teague Warren. She and her husband moved to Thomasville, NC in 1937 and resided there until moving to Fuquay-Varina in 1991 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Boyd Warren Elliott and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Ballentine Elliott.
Surviving, husband, Jay Hoyle Elliott; granddaughter, Nancy Elliott and husband, Ross Stocks of Fuquay-Varina; granddaughters, Jacquelyn Elliott and Caroline Elliott of Fuquay-Varina.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m., Thursday, May 20, 1999 at Thomas Funeral Home.

DOROTHY NORMAN FERRELL
DURHAM -- Dorothy Norman Ferrell, 78, of 2311 W. Carver St. died Tuesday at home following an extended illness. She was born in Tarboro to Roscoe and Martha White Norman. She moved to Durham in early childhood and attended the Durham city schools. Mrs. Ferrell was a member of Westwood Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class.
Surviving are her children, Lloyd Ferrell and Linda Ferrell, both of Durham, and Edie F. Cox of Atlanta; two brothers, Don Norman of Durham and Marvin Norman of Greensboro; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, George L. Ferrell, Sr.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Hall-Wynne Chapel with the Rev. Mac Bare and the Rev. John Yevak officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
Friends will be received 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
J. CARL FULGHUM
WILSON -- J. Carl Fulghum, 77, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999. He was a draftsman, World War II veteran and a member of the Moose.
Funeral, 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church. Interment, Maplewood Cemetery with Moose burial rites.
Surviving: wife, Frances Winstead Fulghum; sons, Lance Fulghum of Wilson, Rusty Fulghum of Rocky Mount and Tracy Fulghum of Durham; two grandchildren.

RUTH MOTON GOLD
NEW BERN -- Ruth M. Gold, 94, of 2701 Amhurst Boulevard, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999. Mrs. Gold was a longtime resident of Cherryville and Gaston County. She taught in the North Carolina Public School System for over 40 years.
She was predeceased by her father, Henry Alexander Moton; mother, Jennie Laura Moton; and loving husband, Milton E. Gold Sr.
Until illness, she was active in the First United Methodist Church of Cherryville, NC.
Mrs. Gold is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Milt and Jennifer Gold of New Bern; three grandchildren, Kelly G. Patrick of Buies Creek, Kevin Casey Gold of New York City, Nick Putnam Gold of New Bern; and great-grandchild, Reilly Patrick.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Carpenter's Funeral Home in Cherryville.
The family will receive friends at Carpenter's Funeral Home from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, May 21, 1999.
A graveside funeral will be held at City Memorial Cemetery on Friday at 1 p.m. Reverend Kelley R. Jones and Chaplain Jack H. Cooke will officiate.

OAKDALE, NY -- James Riddagh Gregg, died May 15, 1999.
He is survived by brothers, William Robert Gregg of Richmond, VA, Charles Richard Gregg of Duxbury, MA; sisters, Elizabeth (Bette) Gregg Stebbins of Cary, NC, Joan Gregg Genova of Williamstown, MA, Ellen Gregg Van Eck of Cary, NC.
He graduated from Sewanhaka High School in 1946, Bucknell University in 1953, studied at Oxford and became a Rhodes Scholar. Worked for Macmillan Books, became an appraiser, earned the title of Colonel Auctioneer, and taught at CW Post.

RALEIGH -- Jane Ellen Gregory Janosko, 40, of 7747 Kelley Court, died Saturday, May 15, 1999 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Jane was a computer consultant with Computer Service Partners.
