GRACE E. JENNINGS
CHARLOTTE -- Grace Elizabeth Matthews Jennings, 78, passed from this life on May 19, 1999, at home after a long and courageous battle with lymphoma. A memorial service will be held at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 20 1999 at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Caroline Craig and Dr. Andrew M. Smith officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Grace, the loving wife of 57 years of Carlos Daniel Jennings of Charlotte, was born February 14, 1921 in Kings Mountain. She was the daughter of Margaret Cabiness and Joseph Lee Matthews of Kings Mountain.
Grace and Carlos joined hearts in marriage on June 21, 1941. After World War II, Carlos and Grace settled in Charlotte. While raising her children, Grace enjoyed working with the P.T.A., touching children's lives as a preschool teacher at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church, and supporting her husband and children in all of their activities.
She was an active member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church and graciously served the sick and needy in the community. She cherished her days as a member of the Charlotte Herb Guild and her volunteer work at Wing Haven. Grace leaves a legacy of deep love and appreciation of nature of her children, grandchildren and friends.
In addition to her devoted husband, Carlos, she is survived by a brother, Joseph Livingston Matthews and his wife, Helen; son, C. Daniel Jennings, II and his wife, Carol Loveless Jennings; grandson, Daniel Nathan Jennings, all of Charlotte; daughter, Susan Elkins Reda, and her husband, Robert Alexander Reda, Jr. and grandchildren, Cydnor Elizabeth Elkins, Alexander Jennings Elkins, Jonathan Robert Reda, and Janine Ellen Reda of Chapel Hill; nieces, Sally Croxson Williamson of Charlotte, Lynn Matthews Pond of Raleigh; nephews, Robert Earl Matthews of Oberursel, Germany, Joseph Livingston Matthews, Jr of Weddington. Grace took great pride in her family and instilled her beauty and love in each of them.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be appreciated by Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, 28204; Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church, 2929 Selwyn Avenue, Charlotte NC 28209; or a charity of one's choice.
M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, Clover, SC is serving the family of Grace M. Jennings.

ELIZABETH B. MCCABE
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- Elizabeth Bond McCabe, 89, died Tuesday. She was born in Chowan Chowan, NC and retired as a registered nurse. She was a member of Freemason Street Baptist Church.
Surviving: stepson, Ralph Lupton of Florida; one sister, Cora B. Morrison of Wilson, NC; two brothers, Dr. George Bond of Richmond, VA and Walter bond of Edenton, NC; two grandchildren; three nephews; and one niece.
Graveside service 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, 1999 at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at Brighton Gardens, 5620 Wesleyan Dr., Virginia Beach, Thursday 6-8 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to Freemason Street Baptist Church.

MARY MCGINLEY MCNALLY
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Mary McGinley McNally, 93, of Raleigh, NC, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, in Raleigh Community Hospital.
Mrs. McNally was born in Riddrie, Scotland on April 3, 1906.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas M. McNally, Sr.
Surviving are one son, Thomas M. McNally Jr. and wife, Gail of Raleigh, NC; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Michael McNally.
Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, 1999 in the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church by Father Dan Kenna. Interment will be on Saturday, May 22, 1999 in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC.

MIDORI S. MIYA
OMAHA, NE -- Midori S. Miya, wife of the former Dean of the UNC School of Pharmacy, Tom Miya, passed away May 13, 1999 in Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Miya was a long-time supporter of the UNC School of Pharmacy, both during and after her husband's tenure as Dean.
She is survived by her husband; her daughter, Dr. Pamela Miya of Omaha; two brothers, Dr. Peter and Mr. Moss Sakamoto; one sister, Mrs. Nobuko Geerstma; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will take place on Saturday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at the Crosby Burkett Swanson Golden Colonial Chapel in Omaha, Nebraska. The Miya Family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent in her name to the Pharmacy Foundation of North Carolina, UNC School of Pharmacy, CB# 7360-121 Beard Hall, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7360.

CAROLINE BONNER PURDUM
CLAYTON -- Caroline Bonner Purdum, infant daughter of Michael Brent and Frances (Beth) Elizabeth Purdum of Clayton, was born May 16, 1999 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, and went to be with the Lord on May 16, 1999.
Besides her parents, she is survived by maternal grandparents, John and Debbie Bonner of Rocky Mount; paternal grandparents, Larry and Paulette Purdum of Rocky Mount; maternal great-grandparents, George and Frances Brown of Rocky Mount; paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. August Purdum of Mechanicsville, VA, Zeke and Doris Crawford of Mountain Home, NC; aunts, Karey Fuller and husband, Dale and Ms. Katherine B. Bonner; uncle, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Bonner, Jr.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 21, 1999 at Rocky Mount Memorial Park with the Dr. Ronald Crawford officiating.

MARIE CARTAGINE SMITH
CARY -- Marie Cartagine Smith, 60, of 106 Lochinvar Ct., Cary, NC, died May 18 at Rex Health Care in Raleigh, NC. She was a parishioner of St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church in Apex.
Survivors are: husband, Gerald D. Smith, of the home; two sons, Jerry Smith and wife Melodie and Paul Smith and wife Carla; two daughters, Marilee McCoy and husband Rob and Maureen Nixon and husband Frank, all of Raleigh, NC.; brother, Tony Cartagine and wife Anne of Roslyn Harbor, NY; sister, Rosalie Russo and husband Saverio of Greensboro, NC; five grandchildren, Matti, Grace, Paul, Rachel and Marie.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, May 20 at St. Andrew The Apostle Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Rd., Apex, NC. A Prayer Service will begin at 8:15 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21. Burial will follow in the Apex Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Wake Co., 4513 Creedmoor Rd., 4th Floor, Raleigh, NC 27612 or to the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, P.O. Box 3828, Durham, NC 27710.

J. LOUIS SMITH
FALKLAND -- Mr. J. Louis Smith, 71, retired farmer, tobacconist, and owner and operator of Bright Leaf Tobacco Warehouse, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Entombment will be in the Falkland Cemetery.
Mr. Smith, a native and lifelong resident of the Falkland Community of Pitt County, and was a member of the Falkland Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by wife, Aldine Harrell Smith; son, Richard D. "Rick" Smith and his wife, Linda of Belvoir; daughter, Edith Smith Edwards and her husband, Frankie, of Falkland; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Walter E. Smith of Pinetops, Roy Smith of Falkland; sisters, Earline S. Wooten of Cobbtown, Gladys S. Cobb of Cot sisters, Earline S. Wooten of Cobbtown.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Falkland Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 28, Falkland, N.C. 27827; or to the Falkland Rescue Squad, Drawer AN, Falkland, NC 27827.

WILLIAM F. VAUGHAN
GRIFFIN, GA -- William F. Vaughan, 51, formerly of Raleigh, died Sunday, May 16, 1999 at home. Mr. Vaughan was born in Wake County, and moved to Georgia in 1993. He was a member of Orchard Hill Baptist Church, Griffin, GA and the Masonic Lodge, Burgaw, NC.
Surviving are his wife, Wendy Eatman Vaughan; sons, Woodson Vaughan, and Frank Vaughan and his wife Erin; daughter, Kris Vaughan; two grandchildren, Daisju and Jontel; mother and father, Christine and John Ward; sister, Teresa Wood and her husband Jeff and their three children, Travis, Christine and Daniel.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Montlawn Memorial Park. Friends may visit Thursday, 7-9 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's Street.

TRAVIS NELSON JONES
WAKE FOREST -- Mr. Travis Nelson Jones, 35, of 5904 of Phillips Landing Dr. in Wake Forest, expired on Monday at Wake Medical Center. in Raleigh.
The service will be professionally conducted 2 p.m. Saturday evening at Corinth U.C.C. in Youngsville. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday at Corinth U.C.C.s in Youngsville
Surviving: wife, Candice McClaim Jones of the home; sons, T.J. and Trea Jones, bothof the home; parents, Raymond and Ernestine Jones of Wake Forest; sister, Marie Alston (Henry) of Wake Forest; brothers, Raymond Earl Jones (Alicia), Terry Jones (Angela), Thurman Jones and Demarcus Jones (Cynthia), all of Wake Forest, Dewayne Jones of Raleigh; grandparents, Herman and Lizzie Jones of Wake Forest; father and mother-in-law, William and Evelyn McClaim of Raleigh; sister-in-law, Camelia McClaim of Knightdale; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.

RACHEL F. RAWLS
RALEIGH -- Rachel F. Rawls, Ph.D., of 2209 The Circle, died suddenly on May 18, 1999.
She was the daughter of Ernest Wyatt Fulton and Mabel Petree Fulton of Winston-Salem.
Her husband, Dr. Horace D. Rawls, preceded her in death.
Born on February 9, 1922 in Walnut Cove, North Carolina, her early life was spent in Winston-Salem. She was graduated Summa Cum Laude from Meredith College, received her Master of Science degree from N.C. State University and her Ph.D. from the George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Rawls taught in Wake County Schools and was employed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. She joined the faculty of the North Carolina School for the Blind (The Governor Morehead School) in 1945 where she worked as psychologist and councilor becoming Director of Research in 1965.
She was Professor Emerita of the Department of Psychology at North Carolina State University where she had been a leader in the School Psychology program. A licensed, practicing psychologist, she continued her work for several years after her retirement, largely in the area of special education. Dr. Rawls was especially well known throughout North Carolina for her work in the field of visual impairment.
Her professional and special interest affiliations, spanning several decades, include the following: Board Member of the North Carolina Commission for the Blind; New Bern Avenue Day Care Center Board of Directors; Past President and Board of the Sir Walter Lioness Club; Past President and Board, Wake County Genealogical Society; Board of the North Carolina Friends of the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped; Board of the Gamma Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; and the Human Rights Committee of The Governor Morehead School. She was a longtime member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. In the mid-eighties friends and professionals in the field of visual impairment honored Dr. Rawls by establishing an annual award, "The Rachel Rawls Award" to recognize an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of visual impairment in North Carolina.
An educational fund was also established in her name for professional development of students and employees in the field of visual impairment. She was honored upon her retirement from North Carolina State by the establishment of a scholarship fund in school psychology.
Dr. Rawls will be lovingly remembered as Rachel by her friends and longtime associates, who will miss her kindness and generosity, her spirit of volunteerism, her keen mind, and her laughter. She loved children and animals, especially cats, reading, and genealogy, and would put aside everything to help a friend.
Dr. Rawls is survived by Kay and Bill Walter of Raleigh, Bill Walter III of Costa Mesa, California, and first cousins, Jonathan Fulton of Winston-Salem, Wilbur Fulton of Seven Lakes, Martha Fulton Wycke of Shelby, Nancy Fulton Kelley of Greensboro, Ray Burke of Kernersville, Elsie Burke Menzel of Durant, Oklahoma, Jane McKinney Deggs of Greensboro, William Hester of Belews Creek, Jean Hester Clark of Winston-Salem, Ruth Hester of Charlotte and Helen Fulton Elliott of Kernersville.
The graveside service will be held on Friday, May 21, at Montlawn Cemetery at 1 p.m.
Family and friends are invited to gather at 2209 The Circle following the service.

RUBY LEE TART
CHAPEL HILL -- Ruby Lee Tart, 82, formerly of Dunn, NC and Sherman, Texas, died early Wednesday, May 19. Mrs. Tart was born in Wilson Mills in Johnston County on April 7, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Rena McLeod Lee.She married Felton W. Tart in 1943 and they lived in Dunn for over 40 years.She worked as a bookkeeper and tobacco market office manager while helping her husband run Tart's Grocery on 301 South until he died in 1983. She was an active member of Hood Memorial Christian Church and the Long Branch Home Demonstration Club.In 1987, she married Thomas D. Griffin of Sherman, Texas, where they lived together happily until his death in 1996.She became a much beloved member of the Forest Avenue Baptist Church where Thomas had been active for many years.In 1997, she moved to Chapel Hill to be near her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Tart Maultsby and husband, Timothy, of Chapel Hill, Helen Lee Tart and husband, Donald Pickett, of Raleigh; sister, Eunice L. Lee of Raleigh; step children, Ena Knapp and husband, Richie, of Grand Prairie, Texas; Debbie Doty of Denison, Texas, Jim Griffin and wife, Donna, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Lee Griffin and wife, Celia, of Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, 11 nephews; 10 nieces and their families.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Ellen Lee Dalrymple of Providence, NC, Annabelle Biniek of Wilson; brothers, Lumas D. Lee and James Hugh Lee, both of Wilson Mills.
Funeral will be held at 2 P.M. Friday at the Skinner Funeral Home in Dunn.

LOIS ANN MITCHELL CLARK-DAVIS
RALEIGH -- Lois Ann Mitchell Clark-Davis, 46, of 741 Grantland Drive, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999. Memorial service 7 p.m. Friday, May 21, 1999 at Revelation Freewill Baptist Church, 805 East Davie Street, Raleigh.
Surviving: daughter, LaToya Gartrell of Angier; granddaughter, Essence Gartrell; mother, Louise Clark of the home; sisters, Alice E. Clark, Reba C. Seagraves and Barnatha D. Clark, all of Raleigh; brothers, Norman F. Clark of Garner, Willis J. Clark and his wife, Linda of Raleigh; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Revelation Freewill Baptist Church, 805 East Davie Street, Raleigh, NC 27610.
