MARIE CARTAGINE SMITH
CARY -- Marie Cartagine Smith, 60, of 106 Lochinvar Ct., Cary, NC, died May 18 at Rex Health Care in Raleigh, NC. She was a parishioner of St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church in Apex.
Survivors are: husband, Gerald D. Smith, of the home; two sons, Jerry Smith and wife Melodie and Paul Smith and wife Carla; two daughters, Marilee McCoy and husband Rob and Maureen Nixon and husband Frank, all of Raleigh, NC.; brother, Tony Cartagine and wife Anne of Roslyn Harbor, NY; sister, Rosalie Russo and husband Saverio of Greensboro, NC; five grandchildren, Matti, Grace, Paul, Rachel and Marie.
The family will received friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, May 20 at St. Andrew The Apostle Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Rd., Apex, NC. A Prayer Service was 8:15 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21. Burial will follow in the Apex Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Wake Co., 1300 St. Mary's St., 4th Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605 or to the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, P.O. Box 3828, Durham, NC 27710.
Arangements have been entrusted to Apex Funeral Directors, Inc., 511 W. Williams St., (Hwy. 55), Apex, NC.

LEILANI A. SOVERN
GARNER -- Leilani Anne Sovern of Garner died May 16, 1999 after a short illness.
Born April 4, 1946, daughter of Robert and Katherine Parry in Portland, Oregon. Mrs. Sovern worked in the printing industry in both printing and sales. She once owned her own print shop in Cedar Rapids, IA. Recently she worked as a sales associate in Home Depot in Garner. Loni's favorite thing was to be everyone's cheerleader. She was known to be happiest when she was with her family and friends.
Surviving are her mother, Katherine Preston of San Diego; husband, W. J. "Tony" Sovern; brother, Robert Parry and wife Debbie; sister, Veronica Madeley; sons, Zachary Sovern, Robert F. Hull, Sean W. Hull and wife Alix; granddaughter, Sarah.
There will be a memorial gathering 3-6 p.m. June 5, 1999 at the Sertoma Arts Center at Shelly Lake, 1400 Millbrook Rd., Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Johnston Memorial Home Care and Hospice, 509 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield, NC 27577.
Leilani's last days were in her home with her loved ones under Hospice's home care at no charge to the family.

HUGH McLEAN WILLIFORD
ROCKY MOUNT -- Hugh McLean Williford, 77, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 1999 at Nash General Hospital. He was born February 27, 1922 in Lumber Bridge, NC son of the late Mr. & Mrs. J.E. Williford. Mr. Williford was a graduate of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA and retired from Burlington Industries in 1986.
Surviving are his wife, Colleen C. Williford; daughters, Jan W. Meriwether and her husband Neal of Vienna, VA, Barbara Magnante of Ft. Myers, FL; granddaughters, Maria and Catherine; sisters, Mrs. Murphy Smith of Cary, Mrs. Elizabeth Tolar of Lumberton, Miss Millie Williford of Raeford.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Lumber Bridge Presbyterian Church, Lumber Bridge, NC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are by Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, Rocky Mt.

CLIFFORD ARNOLD WYRICK SR.
WINSTON-SALEM -- Mr. Clifford Arnold Wyrick, Sr., 78, of Gyddie Dr., Winston-Salem, died Thursday, May 20, 1999 at his daughter's home in Raleigh after a short period of declining health. Mr. Wyrick was born in Ashe County March 14, 1921, the son of the late James Lester and Roxanna Hudson Wyrick. He was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. He retired from the NC Highway Patrol in 1971 with 20 years of service. Following his retirement he worked in security at Wachovia Bank, retiring with 17 years of service. Mr. Wyrick was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII.
Surviving are two daughters, Myra Jarvis and husband Wayne of Lewisville, Arnette Prescott and husband Ron of Raleigh; one son, Clifford Arnold Wyrick, Jr. and wife Sharon of Booneville; five grandchildren, Alex Jarvis of Washington, D.C., Matthew Prescott, Lauren Prescott, Whitney Prescott and Cole Butner.
Mr. Wyrick was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Canter Wyrick, in 1995.
Funeral Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 1999 at Edgewood Baptist Church by Rev. Richard Odom. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall with military Honors conducted by American Legion Post 290 of King.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, 4th Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

ELIZABETH S. JONES
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Elizabeth Smith Jones, daughter of the late Armstead and Nina Smith, was born January 15, 1914 in Wake County, NC. She departed this life on Sunday, May 9, 1999. She was preceded in death John G. Jones (husband), Mary J. Debnam (daughter) and Garnell A. Debnam (grandson).
She leaves to mourn: six grandchildren, Zandra D. Lee, Tyrone Debnam, Jacqueline Debnam-Bailey, Sheila D. Thorpe, Marda Y. Debnam and Russ V. Debnam; three grandsons-in-law; one daughter-in-law; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank Smith; one sister, Lottie Mae Whitaker; a host of nieces, nephews, foster children and friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday 7-8 p.m. at Malaby's Crossroad Baptist Church. Funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday at Malaby's Crossroad Baptist Church.
Arrangements handled by William Toney's Funeral Home, Zebulon.

EDITH N. PERRY
CARY -- Edith N. Perry, 95, retired teacher and bookkeeper, died May 9, 1999. She was born November 13, 1903 in Opp, Alabama, and spent most of her adult life in Sylvester, Georgia. Edith was married to Terrell R. Perry, Jr. for 24 years prior to his death.
Surviving are three children: Betty Gibson and Bill Perry of Cary, NC and Terrell R. Perry III of Pascagoula, MS.
Edith and her son Bill moved to Cary, NC in 1978. She has always been an active member of her community. Edith was always involved in her church, women's club, garden club, D.A.R., and served on the Board of Life Experiences, Inc., the company where her son Bill has been an employee since 1978. Life Experiences is a company in Cary, NC that employs developmentally disabled adults. Edith began China painting at the age of 80 and won many ribbons for her work. In addition to her three children Edith is survived by a sister, Virginia Lindler of Sylvester, GA; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was an exceptional lady who lived her 95 years full of life and as a wonderful example of Christ's love. It is her wish that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Life Experiences, Inc., 1335 Buck Jones Rd., Raleigh, NC 27606.
Graveside services for Mrs. Perry will be held in Sylvester, GA on Friday, May 14th at 11 a.m. A memorial service will be held in Cary in the First Baptist Church on Monday, May 17th at 10 a.m.

STUART H. RIORDAN
RALEIGH -- Stuart Harlow Riordan, 49, of Raleigh and a native of Watertown, N.Y. died suddenly on Friday May 7, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Hetzler Riordan, three sons, Benjamin, Timothy and Brian of Raleigh; his parents, Harlow and Elizabeth Riordan of Watertown, N.Y.; brothers, Steven Riordan, Whitesboro, N.Y. and Frederick Riordan of Sydney, N.Y.; nephews, Jason, Kevin and Adam and several aunts and uncles from northern, N.Y.; parents-in-law, George and Patricia Hetzler from Sarasota, Fl.
Prior to graduating from State University of New York at Potsdam in 1978 with a degree in Computer Science, he served in the United States Navy. He was an employee of I.B.M. for twenty years.
He was active in the community in Indian Guides, Y.M.C.A. coach, Habitat for Humanity and as a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 1999 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 11401 Leesville Road. The Liturgy of Resurrection will be celebrated immediately following the calling hour at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions are requested to Habitat for Humanity, 2300 Capital Blvd., Raleigh, N.C. 27604 or to St. Francis of Assisi School Fund, 11401 Leesville Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27613.
Arrangements by Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue.

PENNIE R. BARBOUR
CLAYTON -- Pennie R. Barbour, 87, of 204 Dairy Rd., died Sunday, May 9, 1999. Service 2 p.m. Tuesday, Powhatan Free Will Baptist Church with burial in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens. Rev. Jim Bogle and Rev Billy Nowell officiating.
Arrangements by McLaurin Funeral Home.
Surviving: daughters, Laura Corbett, Edna Todd, Ann Holmes and Diana Petty all of Clayton; sons, Lloyd M. Barbour and Judson Barbour, both of Clayton; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren.
Family received friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

SUZANNE ADDISON BRACKETT
RALEIGH -- Suzanne Addison Brackett, 38, of Raleigh, died Saturday at her home near Garner. The family will receive relatives and friends 7-9 p.m. today at North Raleigh Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of North Raleigh Funeral Home.

WILLIAM ALLEN COBB SR.
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH -- William Allen Cobb, Sr, 81, of Wrightsville Beach, NC, former District Attorney for New Hanover and Pender Counties, died Saturday night at Britthaven Northchase.
He was born in Wilson, NC, on November 24, 1917, the son of George Washington and Alba Allen Cobb. He grew up in Louisburg, NC and was a Eagle Scout. He graduated from The Citadel in 1938 and the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1941.
Mr. Cobb served in the United States Army in Panama, France and Germany during World War II and in the North Carolina National Guard from 1948 to 1965. He retired as a lieutenant colonel and was also commanding officer of the local 252nd group. He began his legal career working for U.S. Representative Harold Cooley in Washington, DC. After a stint with the Veterans Administration in Marietta, GA, he moved to Wilmington in 1947 and went into private law practice.
He served as town attorney for Wrightsville Beach for five years and as an Assistant District Attorney beginning in 1954. In 1967 he was appointed by Gov. Dan Moore as District Attorney. He served four terms over 17 years and retired in 1983. He then began part-time practice with the firm of Sperry and Cobb and later with the firm of Yow, Fox and Mannen.
Mr. Cobb was President of the North Carolina Azalea Festival in 1974. He served on the New Hanover County ABC Board for ten years, and in 1993 was President of the North Carolina Association of ABC Boards. He was a member of the Wrightsville Beach Lions Club, the American Legion Post 10, the Elks Lodge, Cape Fear Country Club and Carolina Yacht Club. He was a member of St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church for many years and served as a member of the Board of Deacons.
Mr. Cobb is survived by his wife of 55 years, Catherine Rogers Cobb; a daughter, Ann Terrell Williamson and her husband, Bill of Louisburg, NC; a son, Judge W. Allen Cobb Jr. and his wife Debbie of Wilmington; and a daughter, Catherine Pace and her husband Lee of Chapel Hill, NC. He has five grandchildren; Jenkins Williamson of Columbia, SC, John Allen Williamson of Greenville, NC, W. Allen Cobb III of Chapel Hill, NC, Terrell Williamson of Louisburg, NC and Tempe Williamson of Louisburg, NC. He is also survived by one sister, Betsy Cobb Alston and her husband Billy of Lumberton, NC.
The family will received visitors at Andrews Mortuary on Market Street in Wilmington, Monday, May 10, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church on Market Street in Wilmington by Dr. Edward G. Connette and Rev. Steven E. Hein. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Andrews Convenant Presbyterian Church or to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Society; 21021 Ventura Blvd., Suite 321, Woodland Hills, CA 91364 or to the Jim "Catfish" Hunter ALS Foundation, P.O. Box 47, Hertford, NC 27944.

PAULINE GREY NELSON COX
DURHAM -- Mrs. Pauline Grey Nelson Cox, 79, resident of 2240 Charlotte St., died Monday afternoon in Durham Regional Hospital following declining health. She was born in McDowell County, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Herbert and Pearl Pressley Nelson. She was the wife of the late Clarence Stuart Cox. Mrs. Cox was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
Surviving are four sons, Robert Cox and Steve Cox both of Durham, Jerry Cox of Wake Forest and Wendell Cox of Hillsborough; and ten grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Clements Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Josef Braun, Jason Colclough, Joseph Colclough, Michael Cox, Morgan Cox and Robert Cox, Jr. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home.
Flowers are acceptable or those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, 2200 W. Main St., Suite A230, Durham, NC 27705.

CLYDE W. CROOM
JAN. 24, 1912 - MAY 8, 1999
KNIGHTDALE -- Clyde W. Croom of 120 Broadway St., died May 8, 1999.
A graveside funeral service will be held a t 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home, 211, W. Third St., Wendell.Flowers welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, P.O. Box 88, Goldsboro, NC 27533-088.

ERVIN McDevet ESTES
RALEIGH -- Ervin McDevet Estes, 88, of 4704 Highview Court, Raleigh, died Sunday, May 9, 1999, in the Rex Convalescent Care Center in Raleigh after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Estes was a native of Wake County and was the son of the late Sidney Thomas and Betsy Keith Estes. He was married to the late Norma King Estes who died March 12, 1998. He owned and operated the Estes Garage. He was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Treasurer and Sunday School teacher for over 40 years.
Surviving: son, John Estes of Cary; daughter, Corine Johnson of Raleigh; sister, Carvie Barlow of Raleigh; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Mt. Herman Baptist Church. Rev. Phillip Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was held 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Hudson Funeral Home and other times at home of his daughter, Corine Johnson, 4705 Highview Court, Raleigh.
Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to Mt. Herman Baptist Church, 2919 Olive Branch Road, Durham, NC 27703.
