HIGH POINT -- Mrs. Kathleen Woodward White, 90, of High Point, died Tuesday, June 9, 1999 at Maryfield Nursing Home.
a graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 1999, at Willow Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Willow Springs.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Maryfield Nursing Home at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 1999.
Mrs. White was a registered private duty nurse and was an active caregiver in her community. She was of the Primitive Baptist Faith.
She was preceded by her parents, James A. Woodward and Martha Howell Woodward and by her husband, John William White.
She is survived by her sister, Nora Helms of Raleigh and a large number of nieces and nephews.

EFLAND -- Barry Eugene Bailey, 43, died Monday, March 29, 1999 at UNC Memorial Hospital. Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Surviving: parents, Leroy Glenn Bailey, Sr. and Juanita Pegram Bailey of Knightdale; daughters, Laquisha Nicole Bailey and Clorinda Irene Bailey, both of Conover; brother, Leroy Glenn Bailey, Jr. and his wife, Diane of Knightdale.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999 at L. Harold Pool Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.
NAOMI TYNDALL DAVIS
RALEIGH -- Naomi Tyndall Davis, 97, died Monday, March 29, 1999 at Rex Convalescent Center in Raleigh where she had resided for the past six years. Mrs. Davis was formerly of LaGrange, a homemaker and a seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Egbert M. Davis and two sons, Edward Earl Davis and Leroy Vernon Davis.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. A.B. "Mildred" Boyette of Raleigh; son, William H. "Bill" Davis and wife, Nell of Swansboro; sister, Louise Gaskins of New Bern; brothers, Hugh Tyndall of Kinston, Lynwood Tyndall of New Mexico; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999 from the chapel of Garner Funeral Home in Kinston with Rev. Jack Benfield officiating. Burial will follow in Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
THOMAS O'NEILL JR.
COLINGTON HARBOUR -- Thomas O'Neill Jr., 20, of Kill Devil Hills, born December 7, 1978, died March 27, 1999 in U.N.C. Hospital, Chapel Hill. Tom was born in East Brunswick, N.J. and attended Manteo High School, Virginia Episcopal High School and N.C. State University in Raleigh. Tom's passions were playing football, wrestling and surfing. He was the son of Thomas P. O'Neill Sr. and the late Jean Marie English O'Neill.
Besides his father, surviving include his brother, Christopher O'Neill; maternal grandparents, Thomas and Virginia English; paternal grandparents, Warren and Julia O'Neill; many uncles, aunts and cousins.
Funeral service will be held at the Outer Banks Worship Center, Nags Head, on Thursday, April 1, 1999 at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at Twiford's Funeral Home, Manteo on Wednesday, 7-8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Thomas O'Neill Jr. Scholarship Fund, c/o Virginia Episcopal High School, 400 V.E.S. Road, Lynchburg, Va. 24503.

RAFAEL R. PAULL
PITTSBORO -- Rafael R. Paull, well known volunteer, community activist and curmudgeon, died at UNC Hospitals on March 27. He was 72 years old. Born in Jerusalem on July 10, 1926 he moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada as an infant and lived in the Triangle area since 1961. Ralph attended Montreal public schools, graduated from Bishops College School in Lennoxville, Quebec, attended Columbia University and graduated from Olivet College, Olivet, Michigan.
Ralph was one of the founding members of the Chapel Hill Senior Center and served on numerous town and county commissions and boards. He was extremely proud to have been the recipient of the order of the Long Leaf Pine and the J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award.
Ralph was an avid reader of nonfiction and devotee of classical music, ballet, opera and theatre.
Ralph's real legacy, other than his children, is the organization he founded called Santa Year "Round. Santa Year "Round was created when Ralph came to the realization that charitable donations and acts of kindness were usually reserved for the holidays. Santa Year "Round provided, as he said, "all the nourishing little goodies" to children in hospitals, Ronald McDonald Houses and other child-service organizations in 18 states and the District of Columbia. Ralph was particularly thankful to the McDonald's Corporation, Mrs. Grossman's Paper Company and the other special companies who made regular donations to Santa Year "Round. Santa Year "Round has more than 90 devoted and wonderful volunteers.
Survivors are his sister, Anna Paull Gertler of New York City, his wife of 47 years, Shirley Hurwitz Paull, and three daughters, Marie Creed, Wicca Leslie Davidson and Noelle Paull, as well as one granddaughter Becca. In additional he is survived by Joyce Fulcher, Stephanie Bass and Becky Kornegay, whom he affectionately referred to as his "blonde daughters."
There will be a memorial service in the Chapel Hill Senior Center on Elliott Road a 3 p.m. on April 7th.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chapel Hill Senior Center, Chapel Hill, Durham Jewish Federation or Santa Year "Round.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.
ANNIE SMITH
NEW HILL -- Annie Smith age 93 of New Hill, NC passed March 29, 1999 at the Rex Conv. Center in Raleigh, NC due to an extended illness. Mrs. Smith was the oldest living member of the New Hill Baptist Church and a life long member.
Funeral service will be held Friday, April 2, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the New Hill Baptist Church officiating will be Rev. Gerald Hart. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Survivors are: two sons, George A. Smith and wife Marion of Apex, NC, J.G. Smith, Jr. of New Hill, NC; four daughters, Margaret S. Keller and husband Bill of Raleigh, NC, Pat Hyatt of Raleigh, NC, Nell Sutton and husband C.L. of Raleigh, NC, Ethel Smith and husband Hugh of Apex, NC; one brother, Odell Eanes of New Hill, NC; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

CARY -- Carmela Alonso, 78, of Cary, died Monday, March 29, 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Dolores Alonso of Cary. A Memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Cary. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday.
LEONELL S. BIGGS (NANNY)
RALEIGH -- Leonell Smith Biggs, 95, of Raleigh, died Monday, March 29, 1999.
Mrs. Biggs was born in Pitt County, NC, the daughter of the late B.T. and Ella Smith.
A graveside service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, April 1, 1999 in Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at 9308 Dawnshire Rd., Raleigh, NC.
Surviving are her daughter, Joyce B. Satterfield of Raleigh; grandchildren, Karen S. Mozingo, Debra S. Holley, Howard Satterfield, Lisa Ann Satterfield, and Diane Lynn Satterfield; great-grandchildren, John, Thomas and Taylor Mozingo, Dustin Holley.

KENNETH C. BUDD
SILER CITY -- Kenneth C. Budd, 83, of 303 S. Dogwood Ave., Siler City, NC died Monday, March 29, 1999 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC.
Funeral, Thursday, April 1, 1999 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Ave., Siler City with Rev. Brian Reynolds, Chaplain Eugene Beane officiating. Burial, Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City, NC.
Mr. Budd was a native of Chatham County. He was a retired co-owner and operator of Siler City Cleaners & Laundry, and was owner of Budd Septic Tank Company. As a member of the First Baptist Church, he belonged to the Roy Edwards Sunday school class and was a former deacon. For 50 years, he was a member of the Siler City Masonic Lodge #403 A.F & A.M. He proudly belonged to the Siler City Rotary Club and held perfect attendance for 25 years. Formerly, he was a Town Commissioner and Mayor Pro-Tem of Siler City. He attended Louisburg & Guilford College, where he excelled on the baseball field. During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines. A loving husband for more than 60 years, he was totally devoted to his family. With wit and humor, he enjoyed life to the fullest, and was an inspiration to his family and community.
Survivors: wife, Margaret Barnes Budd of Siler City, NC; daughter, Rosemary B. Lentzen of Cary, NC; son, Kenneth C. Budd, Jr. of Siler City, NC; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Budd of Siler City, NC; two grandsons, Steven Lentzen of Sunnyvale, CA, Douglas Lentzen of Charlotte, NC; brother, Curtis Budd of Liberty, NC; sister-in-law, Jane Budd of Liberty, NC; two sisters, Della M. Budd, Leota Budd Thompson both of Siler City, NC; two step-granddaughters.

BUNNLEVEL -- Mrs. Daphne McLawhorn Byrd, 70, a native of Pitt Co., died Tuesday March 30, 1999 at her home. She was a school teacher for over 20 years, teaching junior high students. Surviving: husband, Roy Hobbs Byrd, Sr; daughter, Jenny B. Moorefield of Winterville; son, R.H. Byrd, Jr. of Bunnlevel; brother, Charles L. McLawhorn of Winterville; sister, Patsy M. Worthington of Ayden; five grandchildren.

GERTRUDE H. HARRIS
RALEIGH -- Gertrude H. Harris, of 607 S. East St., died on Saturday, March 27, 1999. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999 at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church. Viewing will be at the church on Thursday, 12-1 p.m. Interment, Mt. Hope Cemetery.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory: cousin, Cheryl Billups (Marvin) of Atlanta, Ga.; two goddaughters, Rhonda Rich of Raleigh, JesSanne Robinson Johnson (Anthony) of Raleigh; extended family, Dr. and Mrs. P.R. CECIL HOPKINS
ZEBULON -- Cecil Hopkins, 78, of 8945 Fowler Road, Zebulon, died Monday, March 29, 1999. Cecil was a retired farmer and store owner of the Hopkins community where he held the title "Unofficial Mayor of Hopkins". He was also a retired fireman with the Hopkins Rural Fire Department. Cecil was a genuine man with a heart of gold.
Surviving: wife, Mary E. Hopkins; God-daughter, Donna Anderson and husband Ricky of Zebulon; grandchildren, Faith and Isaac Anderson, both of Zebulon; brothers, W.H. "Buggar" Hopkins, Harvey Hopkins and Kenneth Hopkins all of Zebulon; sisters, Polly Brannan of Zebulon and Viola Nowell of Winston-Salem; 14 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Baxter and Lucy Pearce Hopkins; brothers, Ivan Hopkins, Willie B. Hopkins and Billy Hopkins; sister, Zola Duke.
