WESLEY ALEXANDER MAGAT
CHAPEL HILL -- Wesley Alexander Magat died Sunday at home in Orange County, in the light of an afternoon warm with early Spring sun. He had lived the last year and a half with the hope of recovering from the effects of an inoperable brain tumor, and he willingly underwent every available therapy in the expectation that this and his family's unbounded love would prove stronger than the cancer. It was both ironic and appropriate that the battle was lost in view of the green, new life burgeoning just outside the window.
Wes, born 21 September 1948 in Wilmington, Delaware, was a graduate of Brown University and received his Ph.D. from the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University. He subsequently spent half of his fifty years as a professor of regulatory economics at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. As an academic dean for many of his last years there, he impressed other faculty and students with how much he cared for them and for their institution. His steady logic, selfless heart, and open mind inspired all who worked with him, and helped steer the new school steadily on a course towards the top echelon of business schools. This was a goal for Wes, personally, as well as for Fuqua, for it drew to that milieu other strong academics it gave him great satisfaction and pleasure to work with.
Wes leaves his wife, Joan, and his daughters, Marin, 20, and Claire, 17. Wes's parents, Eugene and Phyllis Magat, of Chapel Hill, and his sisters, Anita Magat and Barbara Coffman, also mourn his loss.
A memorial service in Wes's honor will be held in Duke Chapel Monday evening, 12 April 1999, at 7:30 p.m.
The family fervently asks that, in lieu of flowers or other material gestures of sympathy, contributions be made to the Duke University Fuqua School of Business to the Fund for Wesley A. Magat.
