JULY 6, 1909 -- JUNE 14, 1999
ZEBULON -- Irma Baker Smith, 89, of Guardian Care, died Monday night at Raleigh Community Hospital. She was born in Franklin County and the widow of William A. Smith.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Strickland Funeral Home with Reverend C.W. Driver officiating. Burial, Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklin County.
Surviving daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Dan T. Burnette of Wendell; son and daughter-in-law, Maylon and Janice Smith of Knightdale; sister, Helen B. Pearce of Bunn; grandchildren, Tim Smith, Dale Burnette and wife Michelle; great-grandchild, Nicholle Burnette; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home, 211 W. Third St., Wendell, other times at the home of Patricia and Dan Burnette, 109 S. Gaylee Lake Dr., Wendell.

CARRIE PAGE TERRY
RALEIGH -- Carrie Page Terry, 81, of 3009 Hickory Rd., died Monday, June 14, 1999. Mrs. Terry was born in Flora, Louisiana to the late William Edward and Eugenia Vercher Page. Prior to retirement Mrs. Terry was a Supervisor for BellSouth. Her husband Harvey J. Terry preceded her in death.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in the Montlawn Memorial Park by the Dr. Charles Johnson.
Surviving is her sister Opal Page Tucker, of Raleigh; two nieces, Bonnie Choate and husband Joe of Kuttawa, KY, and Wanda Harris and husband Ronnie of Wendell; four nephews, William Vascocu of Port Allen, LA, Gary Vascocu of Flora, LA, Allen Ray Hamilton and Larry Dale Hamilton both of Atlanta, GA; two grand-nieces, Melissa Rice and Kara Trull and two great-grand nephews, Austin Rice and Cameron Bell.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC.

GLADYS ELLIOTT WATTS
RALEIGH -- Gladys Elliott Watts of Springmoor Lifecare Community, Raleigh, NC died on June 13, 1999. A private graveside service for the family was conducted on June 15, 1999 with Reverend Phyllis Mayo presiding at Raleigh Memorial Park.
Mrs. Watts was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Grant Calvin Elliott of Wilmington, NC. She was married for more than fifty years to the late Walter A. Watts, a Certified Public Accountant and the senior partner of the firm of Watts and Scobie.
Mrs. Watts was a past president of the Raleigh Garden Club and later became an accredited flower judge. She was also the editor of the cookbook, "Favorite Recipes of the Old North State."
She is survived by her daughter, Beverly W. Warren and son-in-law, Robert S. Warren, Jr. of Raleigh, NC; two grandchildren, Robert S. Warren, III of Raleigh, NC and Elizabeth W. Capel of Troy, NC; and six great-grandchildren.
For those wishing to remember her, the family would like to suggest the following - Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education, 224 Sunnybrook Rd., Raleigh, NC 27610 or The Television Ministry of Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27608.

JOEL ISAAC WELLS
RALEIGH -- Joel Isaac Wells, 54, of Raleigh, NC, died Monday, June 14, 1999 at Wake Medical Center.
Mr. Wells was born in Washington, DC on October 2, 1944, the son of the late Oscar Kenly Wells, Jr. and Helen Waller Wells.
He was retired from Wake Medical Center after 30 years of service as an electrician.
Surviving are one brother, Oscar Wells of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Janice Matthews of Clayton, NC.
Graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 1999 in Montlawn Memorial Park by Rev. Leon Bizzell.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC.

W. RALPH BARBOUR
FOUR OAKS -- Mr. William Ralph Barbour, 74, of 503 Maple Avenue died Saturday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro. He was born in Johnston County, Feb. 2, 1925, to the late William Ralph, Sr., and Onnie Massengill Barbour. Mr. Barbour was a veteran of World War II, having served in the USArmy. He was a 50 year member of Post 346 American Legion, Four Oaks, VFW 5886 of Smithfield, 40 & 8 of Johnston County, a member of the Johnston County Veterans Council and the DAV of Johnston County.
For 42 years, he was employed by CSX Railway before his retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Four Oaks.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Four Oaks. Rev. John Norman & Dr. Sherrill Stevens will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Community Mausoleum at Roselawn Cemetery in Benson.
Surviving: wife, Lucille B. Barbour, son and daughter-in-law, Timothy J. and Terri Barbour of Four Oaks, daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia (Cindy) B. and Hank Wilkins of Garner, Joy B. and Al Worsham of Smithfield; brothers, Donald Barbour and Willis Barbour of Four Oaks; three grandchildren, Justin Wilkins, Alan Worsham and Meredith Worsham.
Memorials may be made to the Building Fund, First Baptist Church, PO Box 717, Four Oaks, NC 27524, or to ones favorite charity.
The family will be at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday night.

MRS. NELLIE RANKIN CAMPBELL
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Nellie Rankin Campbell, 87, of Raleigh, died Saturday, July 3, 1999 in Rex Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mrs. Campbell was born in Oconee Co., SC on October 3, 1911, the daughter of the late Walter A. and Mary Rachel Meritt Rankin. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Grady, Robert, and Marshall Rankin.
Surviving are her husband, Harold Campbell of the home; two daughters, Mary Jane Campbell of the home and Frankie Ray and husband, Gene Ray of Raleigh, NC; two brothers, Clarence Rankin and Carl Rankin, both of Seneca, SC; two sisters, Ethel Rankin and Pauline Klein, both of Toccoa, Ga.; one granddaughter, Kim Wall and husband, Ben Wall of Raleigh, NC and one grandson, Mike Ray.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 1999 in the Mitchell Funeral Home, Glenwood Ave. Chapel by Rev. Lewis Wall, Dr. Doug Murray, and Rev. Robert Montgomery. Interment will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC.
Memorials may be made to the Athens Drive Baptist Church, 1601 Athens Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606.

DAVID PRESTON SORRELL
CARY -- David Preston Sorrell, 40 of Cary died Saturday at NC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. He was a 1981 graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and proudly served as an officer in the US Marine Corp. for three years. David had a fourteen year career in the telecommunications industry with the last five years being associated with Nextel Communications in Cary.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at White Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Angela F. Sorrell; two cherished sons, Jesse Mark Sorrell and Nolan Douglas Sorrell of the home; brother, Douglas Baxter Sorrell of Houston, TX, Kathryn S. Womble of Dallas, TX; paternal grandmother, Louise Sorrell of Greensboro.
The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Cary from 7-8:30 p.m. on Monday and in the church parlor of White Memorial Presbyterian Church from 1-2 p.m. on Tuesday prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jimmy V. Foundation, 1201 Walnut Street, Cary, NC 27511.

DR. JOSEPH GWYN SUTHERLAND
RALEIGH -- Dr. Joseph Gwyn Sutherland, 82, of Raleigh, NC, died Friday, July 2, 1999 in Rex Hospital.
Dr. Sutherland was born in Ashe Co., NC, on September 6, 1916, the son of the late Emmett and Bina Greybeal Sutherland. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas A. Sutherland and Paul G. Sutherland, and also one sister, Mrs. J.C. Little.
He attended Appalachian State University, receiving a Batchelor of Science degree in 1938. He did post-graduate work in economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1947 to 1948, and received a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Agricultural Economics from North Carolina State University in 1952.
Dr. Sutherland taught science at Winecoff High School in Concord, NC from 1938 to 1941. He was a Farm Supervisor with the Farm Security Administration in Bakersville, NC from 1941 to 1942, and an Agricultural Economist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Raleigh, NC from 1947 to 1974. He was a research professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics at North Carolina State University from 1952 to 1976.
From 1941 to 1945, Dr. Sutherland served as an officer in the U.S. Navy, seeing active duty in the Pacific theater during most of World War II. He continued for the next two decades in the Naval Reserve, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Myrtle Marie Nance Sutherland; two sons, Joseph Edward Sutherland of Raleigh, NC and Douglas Gwyn Sutherland and wife, Theresa of Trumbull, CT; one grandson, Kevin Joseph Sutherland of Trumbull, CT.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 1999 in the Mitchell Funeral Home Glenwood Ave. Chapel by Rev. Sally G. Bates of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church officiating. Private interment service will be conducted on Tuesday at Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC.
Memorial contributions may be made to the CMT Association, 601 Upland Ave., Upland, PA 19015.

FARRIS E. HOFLER
CARY -- Mrs. Farris Eure Hofler, 89, of 124 Talon Drive, Cary, NC, died Saturday, July 3, at her residence. A native of Gates County, she was a member of Damascus Christian Church of Sunbury. She was the widow of W. Norfleet Hofler.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn H. Memory, and her husband, Jasper Memory of Cary; granddaughter, Margaret Memory and her husband, Derek Lane of Durham; grandson, William Memory and his wife, Jana Siciliano of Metuchen, NJ; two great-granddaughters, Heather and Emily Lane of Durham.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 6 at Damascus Christian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Riddick Pearce.
Visitation will be from 7:30-9 p.m. Monday, July 5, at Harrell Funeral Home in Gatesville.
In lieu of flowers, please send any memorial donations either to Damascus Christian Church of Sunbury, NC, or Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.

EVERETT L. JONES
CLAYTON -- Everett Lonnie Jones, 82, passed away July 2, 1999. Mr. Jones was born in Johnston County, January 14, 1917 to the late German and Alice Moore Jones.
Funeral service will be held Monday, July 5, 1999 at 11 a.m., Amelia United Church of Christ. Officiated by Rev. Tom Anderson, Rev. Clark Davis with remarks by Ben Franklin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 60 years Bernice Starling Jones; sons, Ronald Everett Jones and his wife, Judy Carr Jones of Raleigh, Norwood Shelton Jones and his wife, Judy Wall Jones of Brevard, Larry Yates Jones and his wife, Sylvia Murray Jones of Clayton, Leland Keith Jones and his wife, Jackie R. Jones of Forest, Va.; a daughter, Connie Jones Anderson and her husband, Rev. Tom Anderson of Concord; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
While flowers are appreciated, memorial contributions may be made to the Amelia United Church of Christ Building Fund, 1696 Amelia Church Road, Clayton, N.C. 27520.
The family will receive friends Sunday, 4-6 p.m. at McLaurin Funeral Home, Clayton.

PAUL GRAHAM JONES, SR.
WAKE FOREST -- Paul Graham Jones, Sr., 90, of 611 S. Brooks Street (Carolina House), formerly of 5405 Old Pearce Road, died Saturday, July 3, 1999. He was born in Wake County and was the son of the late Janadius Houston Jones and Lenora Shearon Jones. He was a member of Rolesville Baptist Church and was a retired farmer and a retired dispatcher for the Wake Forest Police Department.
Funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Monday morning, July 5, 1999, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Marshall Neathery officiating. Burial will follow in Rolesville Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Lucille Pearce Jones; daughter, LaFon Pearce and her husband, Frank, Jr. of Wake Forest; sons, Paul Graham Jones, Jr. and his wife, Lib of Wake Forest, Joseph Olive Jones and his wife, Terri of Spring Hope and Donald H. Jones and his wife, Paula of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Scott Jones, Stacy Pearce, Ritchie Pearce, Jerry Pearce, Michael Jones, Jennifer Jones, Carrie Jones, Kevin Jones and Dana Jones; great-grandchildren, Katie, Graham, Meredith and Blair Pearce.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rolesville Baptist Church Building Fund, the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.
The family will receive friends at Bright Funeral Home from 7-8:30 Sunday evening and at the home place, 5405 Old Pearce Road at other times. (919-556-5811)
