PATRICK DOWD JOHNSON
KINSTON -- Patrick Dowd Johnson, 81, of 1913 Carey Road, died peacefully Wednesday, July 28, 1999 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. He was born in Wake County April 1, 1918, the son of Martha Austin Dowd Johnson and David D. Johnson. His boyhood years were spent in Wake County. He has been a resident of Kinston since 1938.
He began his 60 year career in retail home furnishings with Quinn Miller Furniture and in 1951 founded Highland Furniture Shop where he remained happily employed until the time of his death. He served his country as a staff Sargent in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a former member and past president of the Kinston Lions Club and the Kinston Power Squadron. He was a member of First Baptist Church for over 60 years, where he was a deacon and a former chairman of the board of deacons, former Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Spillman Men's Bible Class. He also served as a Boy Scout Scoutmaster.
He is survived by his wife, business partner, and best friend of over 60 years, Clyde Lenora Gregory of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Julia J. Smith and B. Kelly Smith of Chapin, SC, Susan J. Jones and J. Warren Jones of Fuquay-Varina, Lynn J. Woolard and Jodie D. Woolard III of Kinston; five grandsons and two granddaughters-in-law, W. Gregory Woolard and Laurie G. Woolard, Kelly P. Smith and Kristy T. Smith, Christopher S. Smith, Joshua D. Jones, Zachary W. Jones; one granddaughter, Blakely E. Woolard; one great-grandson, Kelsey P. Smith; three step grandsons; three step-daughters-in-law, and one step granddaughter, Jesse W. Jones and Sue T. Jones, Burt W. Jones and Heather S. Jones, G. Robert Jones and Catherine C. Jones and Kimberly R. Jones; and three step great-grandchildren, Christopher B. Blacka, Evie A. Blacka, Blake W. Jones, as well as many friends and customers.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 30, 1999 at First Baptist Church, Rouse Road, Kinston.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Edwards Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Kinston, 2600 Rouse Rd., Kinston, NC 28501.

PATRICK JOSEPH MURPHY
RALEIGH -- Patrick Joseph Murphy, 28, of 3317 Brennan Drive died Sunday at Wake Medical Center after a lightening accident. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University and employed as an assistant scientist with Glaxo-Wellcome in the research and development department.
A memorial service will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Milbrook Road (876-6900).
Surviving are his parents, Andrew and Norma Murphy of Raleigh; maternal grandfather, Victor G. Cembellin of Hayward, CA; fiancee, Elisabeth Holscher of Raleigh; uncle, Victor G. Cembellin, Jr. of ElCerrito, CA; cousins, Deborah Cembellin of Phoenix, AZ, Douglas Cembellin of Hayward, CA and Victor G. Cembellin, III of Alameda, CA; great aunt, Clara Olivera of Castro Valley, CA.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Patrick J. Murphy Bike Trail Fund, c/o Elisabeth Holscher, 1920 Alexander Road, Raleigh, NC 27608.

ONA M. BAKER
STATESVILLE -- Mrs. Ona Maxine Baker, 76, of 232 Cooper Farm Rd., died Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at Davis Medical Center. Born January 14, 1923 in Topeka, Kansas she was a daughter of the late Arthur Scott Youngman and Laura White Youngman. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Giles Presbyterian Church of Raleigh.
Survivors include: son, Edwin Scott Baker of Apex; daughter, Connie Baker Tate of Statesville; four grandchildren, Patricia Alice Tate, Laurie Beth Tate and Jeffrey Alan Tate, all of Statesville, Stephanie Baker of Apex. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Deanie Y. Cooper of Greensboro.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Ann Baker.
Memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 1999 at Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas Sherrod officiating. Interment will be held following a graveside ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh with Rev. Jim Hodge, pastor of St. Giles Presbyterian Church officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home Thursday afternoon.
For those who prefer, memorials may be given to S.C.A.N (Stop Child Abuse Now) of Iredell County, P.O. Box 167, Statesville, NC 28687.
Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.

KATHERINE S. BARNES
WILSON -- Katherine Stevens Barnes, 67, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999. She was a native of Smithfield and long time resident of Wilson having retired from the Wilson County School System. Mrs. Barnes was a member of the First Christian Church.
Funeral, Friday, 10:00 a.m., Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: sons and their wives, Jimmy and Cotten Smith Barnes of Raleigh, Mitch and Ann Simmons Barnes of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Jimbo, Sarah Carr, Katherine, Walker, Anna and Liza; sisters, Helen Scott and Alice Adams of Wilson, Joyce Underwood of Raleigh and Louise Byrd of Panama City, FL; brother, N.S. Stevens Jr., of Smithfield.
The family will be at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Service, 2704 W. Nash Street, today, 7-8:30 p.m.

MODELL R. BRADLEY
McDONOUGH, GA. -- Modell R. Bradley, 76, of McDonough, Ga., died on Wednesday, July 7, 1999.
Born in Hartwell Georgia on October 8, 1922 to the late V.W. and Essie Rice.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are her daughter, Sheri Crockert and her husband, James of McDonough, Georgia; son, E.T. Bradley Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Oxford, NC; eight grandchildren and eight-great-grandchildren; brother, Nevian Rice of Murphy. NC; sister, Elizabeth Johnson of Coats, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Ms. Bradley was held on Saturday, July 10, 1999 at the chapel of Rainer-Carmichael Funeral Home, McDonough, Georgia 770-957-3535.

LUVENIA L. COLLIER
LOUISBURG -- Luvenia Layton Collier, 90, died Tuesday at Franklin Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday from the Louisburg Baptist Church conducted by the Dr. Larry Williams. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Surviving: daughters, Janice G. Ayscue of Lakeland, FL, Anna C. deButts of Raleigh, Sara C. Newton of Louisburg, Susan C. Perry of Clayton; son, Richard W. Glasgowof Louisburg; sister, Ruby L. Layton of Louisburg; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Lancaster Funeral Home.
Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the Louisburg Baptist Church, 302 N. Main Street, Louisburg, NC 27549.

JOHN RAYMOND GOVE JR.
KOTA KINABALU, MALAYSIA -- John Raymond Gove Jr., 82, of Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, died July 27, 1999.
Mr. Gove graduated from UNC, Phi Beta Kappa, with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1938. In 1947, he obtained his Masters in Sanitary Engineering. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Gove is survived by his wife, Mary Chia; stepdaughter, Susie Strepay of Cary; sons, John Raymond Gove III of Upper Crystal Creek; Australia and Robert Paul Gove of Hillsborough, NC; brother, Norman Gove of Houston, Texas; sister, Mildred Biehler of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, Richard Douglas Gove of Japan, Jean Louise Gove of New York City, Lydia Elizabeth Gove of Hillsborough, NC, and Robert Paul Gove Jr. of Hillsborough, NC.

VICTORIA DATI KOSTNER
CARY -- Victoria Dati Kostner, 88, died on July 21, 1999, at Cary Health and Rehabilitation Center.She was a resident of the area for nine years, coming here from Lake Forest, Illinois.
Victoria is survived by her daughter, Joyce Dati Poynton of Holly Springs; son, Donald Dati of Fox Point, WI.
Services and interment were in Lake Forest, IL.A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex on Friday, July 30, at 9:00 am in the Chapel.

J. FLOYD MANESS
RALEIGH -- J. Floyd Maness, 84, of Raleigh, NC, died, Wednesday, July 28, 1999 in Rex Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Maness was born in Carthage, NC. He was preceded in death by a son, William T. "Bill" Maness in 1998.
He was associated with Gregory Poole Equipment Company in Raleigh for twenty years and also owned and operated the Ranch Motel in Raleigh for thirty-two years until his retirement in 1988.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Virgie Franklin Maness; one son, Dick Maness of Raleigh; two sisters, Bessie Oldham and Flossie Dowdy both of Carthage, NC.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 30, 1999 in the Mitchell Funeral Home, St. Mary's St. Chapel by Rev. Steve Hickle. Interment will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the residence.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Fairmont United Methodist Church, 2501 Clark Ave., Raleigh, NC 27607.

JAMES McCALL PROCTOR
HICKORY -- James McCall Proctor, 88, died Tuesday night at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
He was a native of Lincoln Co., and was a graduate of Davidson College. He was a former Vice President of Harrett & Henderson Yarns, Inc., and a former member of the Henderson Rotary Club. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Hickory.
Graveside service will be held Friday, July 30, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Gardens in Henderson.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara P. Smith of Raleigh and Addria P. Capps of Hickory; two brothers, William Proctor and Bennette Jackson Proctor, both of Charlotte; one sister, Edna Mae Proctor of Charlotte and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday from 12 noon until 12:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home in Henderson.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

NANCY O. SINCLAIRE
HILLSBOROUGH -- Nancy Ohlfest Sinclaire of 3731 Acorn Drive, died Wednesday morning following an automobile accident.
She is survived by her partner, Barbara Ann Yoder; her son, Chris McCown; her parents, Donald E. and Haydee Ohlfest of Miami, FL; brother, Lonny Ohlfest and his wife, Carlin, and their son, Matthew, also of Miami, FL; numerous friends.
Service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hillsborough United Church of Christ, 200 Davis Road, with the Reverend Kay Crawford presiding.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the charity of one's choice.

LEWIS E. TAFT JR.
APEX -- Lewis Edward Taft, Jr.,74, of 1100 Purple Glory Dr., died Tuesday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center inGoldsboro. He was born in New Haven, CT, and was a carpenter by trade until his retirement in 1980. Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 30, 1999 in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 511 W. Williams St., in Apex. Burial will be private at a later date.
Mr. Taft was preceded in death by a son, Lewis Edward Taft, III; daughter, Judith Taft Glowa; grandson, Lewis Edward Taft, IV; granddaughter, Suzette Storlazzi. He is survived by two daughters, Carol Cullen and husband, William of Apex, Kathryn Cain and husband, William of Cary; six grandchildren, Jennifer Cullen, William Cain, Christian Ford, Cathrine Taft, Thomas Storlazzi, Nicole Glowa; two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. preceding the service on Friday at Apex Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
