WILLIAM "BUCK" D. WALSTON
FARMVILLE -- Mr. William "Buck" Douglas Walston, 68, of 411 North Contentnea Street, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
Funeral service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. from the Church Street Chapel of the Farmville Funeral Home by Rev. Stephen Prescott. Interment will follow in Hollywood Cemetery.
Mr. Walston, a native of Greene County, lived most of his adult life in Farville. He was a member of Marlboro Free Will Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Johnson Walston of the home; one son, William Neal Walston and wife, Pam of Greenville; three sisters, Mrs. Onnie Whitley of Wilson, Mrs. Ollie Thigpen and husband, Bill of Beulaville, and Mrs. Celia Smith and husband, Joe of Fayetteville; one grandson, Douglas Karr Walston.
The family will receive friends at the Farmville Funeral Home, Thursday evening from 7 until 9 p.m.

MARTHA LOUISE WILLIAMS
RALEIGH -- Martha Louise Williams, the daughter of the late Roy and Bertie Pair Williams, wasborn December 26,1921. She departed this life on July 25, 1999 at Atlanta Medical Center, Atlanta, GA after an extended illness. Martha was a native of Raleigh, educated in Raleigh Public Schools, and a graduate of Washington High School.
Residing in the New York area for all of her adult life, she was involved in many civic and community organizations. Having accepted Christ, she was also a long-time active and dedicated member of Convent Avenue Baptist Church where she was a member of the Nurses Auxiliary, Sunday School, Club 75, and The Carnation Guild until her health began to fail.
Funeral to be held 12 noon, Friday, at Providence Holy Church, 320 Bledsoe Avenue. Burial to follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Booker T. and Sandy Roy Williams.
Martha leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Ginger W. Sullivan (Richard); grandson, Richard A. Sullivan, Jr. (Yvonne); granddaughter, Sheila Sullivan-Gray (Raymond); two great-grandsons, Kjiah Prather and Tahj Wedlowe, Lithonia, GA; two sisters, Mary Williams and Lizzie Williams, Raleigh, NC; two foster sisters, Alice W. Henry and Lula Mae Blandshaw, Raleigh, NC; two aunts, Mrs. Maude Griffis, Raleigh, NC and Mrs. Eugenia Freeman, Newark, NJ; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Pauline L. Williams, Yonkers, NY, and Mrs. Josephine B. Williams, Raleigh, NC; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation, 11-12 noon at the church.

DAVID M. BEVACQUA
RALEIGH -- David Michael Bevacqua, 52, died suddenly of a massive heart attack on Monday, July 26. Much beloved by his family, members of Edenton Street United Methodist Church and the community. Dave was born in Richmond, Ky., lived in Gastonia and moved to Raleigh in 1962. Dave graduated from Enloe High School and was a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with a degree in Political Science in 1969. He received his masters degree in Adult Education from North Carolina State University in 1974. A military veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Dave was employed as a regional sales representative with Riverside Manufacturing Co. and was recognized by his company in 1998 as Salesman of the Year. For several years Dave taught adult continuing education at Wake County Technical Institute assisting students with completion of their GED.
Dave was an energetic and devoted member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church where he witnessed daily to his dynamic faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. At the time of his death, he was serving as Chair of the church's Council on Ministries. A gifted teacher, he was a regular member of the Foundry Fellowship Sunday School Class, a leader in the SALT Bible Study and was the founding teacher of the Barnabas Class. He was much beloved as a former leader of the Children's Omega Club and happily coordinated the annual Christmas Love Feast. He served on the Finance Committee and was a past president of United Methodist Men.
Dave enriched many lives with his contributions to Edenton Street's family camping ministries at Camp Don Lee where he built dozens of camp fires and coordinated many unforgettable skits and sing-a-longs. He also served 16 wonderful years as the Director of Camp Shalom, an outreach summer camp for Edenton Street youth and inner city children in the Raleigh area. Additionally, Dave was a member of the Heart of Carolina Emmaus Community and served on the North Carolina Conference's United Methodist Council on Camping Ministries. A sports enthusiast, Dave was an avid golfer, gardener and devoted UNC athletics fan. Well known for his ingenious Christmas packages, he is fondly remembered for his artistic gifts as craftsman, cartoonist and gardener.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Leslie; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Eric Bolash; granddaughter, Mila of Lubbock, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Warren Bevacqua and Jennifer Williams of Harrisburg, Pa.; parents, A.J. "Tony" and Emma Bevacqua of Raleigh; brother, Rick Bevacqua and wife, Becky of Multrie, Ga.; sister, Terry Richardson of Durham; brother, Tim and wife, Suzie of Raleigh; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Warren and Margaret "Pee Wee" Hood of Wilson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Beverly and Ray Mitchell of Bailey; 10 nieces and nephews; three great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 28, 7-9 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall of Edenton Street United Methodist Church. A memorial service celebrating Dave's life will be held at Edenton Street United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 29, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Dave's memory to Edenton Street United Methodist Church, 228 W. Edenton St., Raleigh, N.C. 27603-1790.

LINDSEY R. FRANZWA
KNIGHTDALE -- Lindsey R. Franzwa, 14, of Glen Ellyn, IL, formerly of Knightdale, died July 21, 1999 in Alma, MI, in an automobile accident on her way to camp.
Lindsey graduated the 8th grade in June from Hadley Junior High School, Glen Ellyn, IL. She was an academician, played her violin, had a host of friends and was a gifted artist who loved to paint.
Surviving: parents, Richard A. and Pam S. Franzwa of Glen Ellyn, IL; sisters, Abby Franzwa of Glen Ellyn, IL; maternal grandparents, Patty Marlo of Wallace, and Jim Shouse of Cincinnati, OH; paternal grandparents, Fred and Marjorie Franzwa of Hobart, IN.
Memorial service 6 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 1999 at DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church, 4 S. 535 Old Naperville Rd., Naperville, IL with Rev. Jim Cofield and Rev. Ann Lindle officiating. A reception to follow memorial service at the church.

ALLIE MAE HARRIS
FUQUAY-VARINA -- Allie Mae Harris, 91, of 3621 Piney Grove-Wilbon Road, Fuquay-Varina, died on Sunday, July 25, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. Funeral service to be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 29, 1999 at First Baptist Church, Fuquay-Varina, with the Rev. T.E. McCullers officiating. Interment will follow at Justice Memorial Cemetery, Apex, NC.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cortez Harris, Sr.
Surviving are five sons, Joseph and Cortez, Jr., both of Raleigh, Jasper of the home, Ben Wiley of Fuquay-Varina and Wallace of Gardena, CA; two daughters, Rosa Mae Harris of Raleigh and Josephine McElveen of Riverdale, MD; two sisters, Clara Sims of Philadelphia, PA and Viola Parham of East Orange, NJ; fourteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Wake at the church, Wednesday evening, July 28, from 7-8 p.m.

IDA W. CURRIE
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Ida Withers Currie, daughter of Marie Sloan and George Hendon Currie, beloved sister of George Hendon Currie Jr., and James Sloan Currie (both deceased), born January 6, 1910 in Clarkton, N.C., died Sunday, July 25.
She is survived by four nieces and nephews, Marie Sloan Currie Thursby of West Lafayette, Indiana, George Hendon Currie III of Jacksonville, Florida, Neill Alexander Currie of Wilmington, N.C., and Mary Virginia Currie Jones of Richmond, Va.
She was a graduate of Peace College, Raleigh, N.C. in 1929, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1931 and Columbia University, New York, N.Y. in 1937. She taught on the business faculty at Peace College. She was a Federal employee at the National Security Agency - Office of Secretary of Defense for 37 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Arlington, Va.; member of Chi Omega Sorority at UNC-CH; avid and accomplished sportswoman, basketball and tennis players on womens' teams at UNC-CH as well as President of the Woman's Athletic Association at UNC; made a long commitment to Presbyterian Christian teaching youth for many years at The Church of the Pilgrims in Washington, D.C.; Distinguished Alumna of Peace College in 1972.
Funeral service to be at Clarkton Presbyterian Church, Clarkton, N.C. with burial at Clarkton Cemetery at 2 p.m. on July 31st.
Memorial service at The First Presbyterian Church, Arlington, Vaon September 11 at a time to be arranged.
Memorial donations are welcomed. Donations can be made to Ida Withers Currie Fund at Peace College, 15 East Peace St., Raleigh, N.C. 27604. This fund was established in 1979 by James Sloan Currie to allow an annual gift to the best student graduated from the business administration program.

CHARLES E. FESMIRE
SEPTEMBER 6, 1931 - JULY 27, 1999
CHARLOTTE -- Charles E. Fesmire, Sr., 67,a native Charlottean, died on July 27, 1999, while at Carolinas Medical Center after an extended illness.
Mr. Fesmire was born on September 6, 1931, a son of the late Ralph and Robbie Fesmire. He retired in 1998, after 9 years as Chairman of the Board and CEO of Fesmire Graphic Systems, Inc.
Mr. Fesmire served in the United States Air Force where he studied administrative procedures for the military while working in the Pentagon, as well as in the 57th Fighter Wing and the 9th Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
A past Deputy Governor of the International Club of Printing Craftsmen, Mr. Fesmire was very active in the Graphic Arts Industry and attended exhibitions both domestically and internationally in the last 25 years. Well-known for his professional accomplishments in Europe and Japan as well as the United States, the true impact of Charles Fesmire's contributions were felt here in the Carolinas where the Printing Industry of the Carolinas (PICA) Foundation awarded him the prestigious Norman Foust Award. The PICA Foundation made Mr. Fesmire one of only six recipient; of the highest honor it can bestow upon its members for outstanding contributors to the printing industry and his fellow man. He also received the Key Man Award from PICA in 1966-67. Also from Clemson University, he was presented the Graphic Arts Society Award in appreciation for his outstanding contribution and interest in Graphic Arts as a vocation for college students.
A 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner, Mr. Fesmire helped numerous children by taking them to the burn hospital inCincinnati. He also served as President of the Charlotte East Rotary Club. Prior to becoming a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church, Charles Fesmire was a member of Belmont Park United Methodist Church and then became a Charter member of University Methodist Church. He taught Sunday School for many years in the Allen Boger Class and in the Lamplighters Class.
Mr. Fesmire is survived by his wife, Frances Eubank Fesmire, sons, Charles E. Fesmire, Jr. and his wife, Sandra, Ronald W. Fesmire and Gary L. Fesmire and his wife, Amy; granddaughter, Leah Brittany Fesmire; step-daughter, Teri Roberts Marshall and her husband, William; brothers, Larry Fesmire and Danny Fesmire. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha Hall Fesmire in 1994.
Memorial service will be 4:00 p.m. Thursday at Myers Park United Methodist Church with Dr. Julian M. Aldridge Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service in the Owenby Hall. The interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charles E. Fesmire, Sr., Memorial Fund, PO Box 471476, Charlotte, NC 28247. This fund was established to promote future education in the Graphic Arts Industry.
Arrangements are in the care of Hankins and Whittington-Dilworth Chapel.

ARLENE B. HAWKINS
CHINQUAPIN, N.C. -- Arlene Blake Hawkins, formerly of Townsville and Henderson, N.C., 85, retired school teacher, the widow of James Connor Hawkins "J.C., " passed away July 26, 1999, in Chinquapin, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Annie Mae Hanchey; brothers, Edwin Blake, Robert Blake and Winford Blake.
The funeral services will be Wednesday, July 28, 1999, 4:30 p.m. at Sharon Baptist Church in Chinquapin, N.C. A brief service will be held Thursday, July 29, 1999, at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Townsville, N.C. at 3 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice Sandlin and husband, Levon of Chinquapin, N.C.; sons, James Connor Hawkins Jr. and wife, Margaret of Odessa, Texas, William Bruce Hawkins and wife, Linda of Norman, Oklahoma; sister, Lucy B. Chadwick; brothers, Willie Blake and Carl Blake; grandchildren, Robert Allen Moss Jr. and wife, Wendi of Wake Forest, Diana Lynn Bettis of Knoxville, Tennessee, William Connor Hawkins and David Wayne Hawkins of Norman, Oklahoma, Samuel James Hawkins and Andrew Brian Hawkins of Odessa, Texas; great-grandchildren, Dennis Dale Pegram of Henderson, N.C., Maggi Moss, Brandon Lassiter Moss and Bailey Allen Moss of Wake Forest. N.C.

WILMER SCOTT HOGGARD
LEWISTON -- Mr. Wilmer Scott Hoggard, age 73, died July 26, 1999 at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, VA. Mr. Hoggard was the son of the late William Scott Hoggard and Mattie Bazemore Hoggard. He was a World War II Army veteran and owner of Hoggard General Merchandise for 29 years.
Survivors include his wife, Louise "Lou" Lassiter Hoggard. A daughter, Donna H. Eways of Rocky Mount, NC; a grandson, Kamal Eways and great-granddaughter, Alana Kyle Eways, both of Rocky Mount, NC; four sisters, Lula Mae Hall of Lewiston, NC, Jean Robbins of Rich Square, NC, Frances Dunlow of Askewville, NC and Catherine Mizzelle of Winterville, NC; three brothers, Edward D. Hoggard of Windsor,NC, James Thomas Hoggard of Lewiston, NC and Charles Edgar Hoggard of Askewville, NC.
Graveside service will be held Thursday, July 29, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Hoggard Memorial Cemetery in Lewiston, NC by Rev. Blake Hayes.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m.

JOHN C. JEFFRIES
RALEIGH -- John C. Jeffries, 89, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999. Mr. Jeffries was born in Tampa, and came to Raleigh in the mid-1930s with General Motors. He was the owner of Jeffries Appraisal Service from 1953 to 1996. He served in the United States Army in World War II, and participated in campaigns in Italy and the Philippines. Mr. Jeffries remained in the Army Reserve after the War, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Virginia Langdon Jeffries; daughter, Joanna Jeffries Johnson of Raleigh; son, John C. Jeffries, Jr. of Charlottesville, VA and grandchildren Kenneth Lee Johnson and Anne Langdon Johnson.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today in the Chapel of Hayes Barton Baptist Church, with interment following in Raleigh Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for memorials to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605. The family invites friends to the home of Joanna Johnson, 606 Transylvania Ave., Raleigh, today from 5-7 p.m.

MARY ADAMS JOHNSON
WENDELL -- Mary Adams "Skeeter" Johnson, 85, formerly of Wendell, died Monday, July 26, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. Skeeter was a retired nurses aide with Wake Medical Center. Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 1999 at Baptist Tabernacle Church, Highway 231, Wendell. Burial, Baptist Tabernacle Church Cemetery.
Surviving: son, Marshall Johnson of Apex; daughter, Patsy Johnson Cender of Raleigh; brother, Paul Adams of Raleigh; sisters, Geneva Nolta of Minnesota, Marie Buffaloe of Raleigh, Margaret Storlie of Minnesota; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service & Crematory 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.

JAMES A. KISER
CHARLOTTE -- James Alexander Kiser Sr., 93, died Monday, July 26, 1999 at Presbyterian Hospital.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 29, at Cole Memorial United Methodist Church on Sugar Creek Road in Derita with Rev. Harold E. Peacock officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Landers Chapel United Methodist Church on 1205 Long Soals Road in Gaston County. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 28, from 7-8:30 p.m. at McEwen Derita Chapel, 6300 Mallard Creek Road.
Mr. Kiser was born October 11, 1905 in Gaston County, NC, the son of the late Henry Clay Kiser and Elizabeth Alexander Kiser. He retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System after 40 years in the educational field. He is a graduate of Tryon High School, Lenoir-Rhyne College, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he received the degree of Master of Arts on Educational Administration. Mr. Kiser served school principalships in North Carolina at White Oak School in Carteret County, Mooresboro and Polkville Schools in Cleveland County, Grantham School in Wayne County and Balls Creek School in Catawba County. He also taught at schools in Gaston and Mecklenburg counties and at N.C. State University in Raleigh.
He lived in the Derita Community of Charlotte from 1956 to 1994 and then at the Methodist Home in Charlotte from 1995 until his death. Mr. Kiser held office in local chapters of the North Carolina Education Association. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club, a former Mason, charter member of the Derita Lions Club and was a longtime member of Cole Memorial United Methodist Church. He was very active in his church and community and served as a Sunday school teacher at the various churches he attended.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Norma Lee Gurganus Kiser; sons, James Alexander Kiser Jr. and wife, Joan Petrea Kiser of Columbia, S.C. and Johnny Dan Kiser and his wife, Jo Ann Cantrell Kiser of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Mark Warren Kiser and wife, Nickie of Knoxville, Tn., Ross Timothy Kiser of Alexandria, Va., Alisa Kiser Smith and her husband, Michael Smith of Atlanta, Ga., and Scott Kiser of Atlanta, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Kiser, Linnet Kiser and Michael Joseph Smith Jr. and also three brothers, Wilbur Kiser of Shelby, Howard Kiser and Norman Kiser and wife, Betty Rhyne Kiser, all of Gaston County.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cole Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 26066, Charlotte, N.C. 28221 or to Landers Chapel United Methodist Church, 1205 Long Shoals Road, Linconton, N.C. 28092.
McEwen Funeral Service, Derita Chapel, is serving the family of Mr. Kiser.
