SAMUEL P. MANNING
SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Honorable Samuel Phillips Manning, 73, attorney and former South Carolina State House Representative of Spartanburg, died Monday, July 26, in Columbia, SC at Magnolia Manor. He was born in Spartanburg, son of the late Andrew Adger Manning and Virginia Maxwell Manning. He was a a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent. He attended Wofford College and graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1949 with honors in Political Science. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received the L.L.B. from the University of South Carolina in 1954, where he was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa. He did post graduate work at George Washington University. He was admitted to the South Carolina bar in 1954 and served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of South Carolina from 1954 to 1956. He practiced law in Spartanburg since 1956. He was President of the Spartanburg County Bar Association in 1992. During World War II he served in the 25th Infantry Division in the Pacific Theatre. Called back during the Korean Conflict he served with the Army Counter Intelligence Corps. Afterwards, he was a Captain in the office of the Judge Advocate General, United States Army Reserves. He represented Spartanburg County in the House of Representatives from 1967-1982, serving on the Judiciary Committee. He co-authored Legislation which made the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg a four year institution and established its nursing program. He was the driving force behind the protection and preservation of important historic and natural sites such as Cowpens National Battlefield, Musgrove's Mill and Congaree Swamp. He introduced legislation in 1974 creating the Heritage Trust Program to continue efforts to preserve these areas. In 1976 he served as state vice-chairman of the South Carolina Bicentennial Commission. In recent years he had been very involved in state environmental issues. Active in community affairs, he was a past President of the Spartanburg Jaycees and County Chairman of the March of Dimes. He has been on the boards of YMCA, Charles Lea Center, Mental Health, Art Association, Historic Association, District Boy Scouts, USC Alumni and South Carolina State Museum. He was a former Commander of American Legion Post 28. He was a member of various local civic organizations. He was named "Citizen of the Year" by the Kiwanis Club in 1976. He had a deep love for South Carolina, its citizens and her heritage.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Carter Manning of Spartanburg, SC, formerly of Chapel Hill, NC; son, Sam Manning Jr. of Columbia, SC; daughter, Carter Manning Wade of Bristol, TN; grandson, John William Wade, Jr. of Bristol, TN; sister, Virginia Manning Moses of Spartanburg; brother, William Sinkler Manning of Macon, GA. He is closely related to six former governors of South Carolina: James B. Richardson, 1802 - 1804, Richard L. Manning,1824-1826, John P. Richardson, 1840-1842, John L. Manning, 1852-1854, John P. Richardson, 1886-1890 and Richard L. Manning, 1915-1918. He is directly descended from the former governor of North Carolina, David Stone, 1808-1810.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, July 29, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Advent conducted by the Rev. Elizabeth W. Ely. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

RICHARD L. PORTER
RALEIGH -- Richard Porter, died Thursday afternoon at age 53 of a heart attack while hiking in the mountains of Washington State. Mr. Porter was born on March 22, 1946 in Elmira, NY. He did his undergraduate work at Alfred University and earned his PhD at McMaster University; he taught ceramics and materials engineering at NC State for the past 18 years and had recently served as the assistant dean of academic affairs for the college of engineering.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Kelly Porter in 1980 and is survived by his son, Nicholas Porter, 26, who lives in Eugene, OR with his wife, Robyn Weir Porter, his father, two brothers, two sisters and their families. He will be remembered at an informal service at his home, Wednesday, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Richard L. Porter Scholarship Endowment in care of the North Carolina Engineering Foundation.

VIRGINIA KATHRYN GARRISON RUDISILL
BADIN -- Mrs. Virginia Kathryn Garrison Rudisill, 79, of 1 Tallassee Street, Badin died 9:30 p.m. on Monday, July 26, 1999 at her home.
Mrs. Rudisill was born to the late Banks Thompson Garrison and Myrtle Lenora Kirk Garrison on May 1, 1920 in Badin, where she graduated from Badin High School. She attended Queens College and Brenau College majoring in music. While in High School Virginia met her future husband Gerald Alton "Jake" Rudisill, Sr. who died July 1986. They were married October 19, 1940. Virginia was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Badin. She has taught Sunday School, served as pianist, worked in Vacation Bible School and Women of the Church. She has also been active in civic organizations which include: Member of the Board of Directors for the Stanly County Mental Health Association, Charter member of the Board of Directors for the Uwharrie Homes, Inc., "Volunteer Worker of the Year" in 1974 for Stanly County Mental Health Association and Chairman of the Children's Service Committee, Badin School PTA and Book Club. Mrs. Rudisill's hobbies and interest were music, flower growing, teaching and working with children. She is also remembered by her devotion as a wife, mother and grandmother.
Funeral arrangements 2 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 1999 at First Presbyterian Church, Badin, with Reverend Dan Wray officiating. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 28, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle other times the family will be at the home 1 Tallassee Street, Badin.
Survivors: sons, David M. and daughter-in-law Margaret Rudisill of Albemarle, William G. and daughter-in-law Debbie Rudisill of Wilmington, Gerald A. and daughter-in-law Sue Rudisill of Charlotte; daughter, Betty R. and son-in-law Scott Huneycutt of Burlington; brothers, John T. "Tom" Garrison of Badin and James B. "Jim" Garrison of Albemarle; eight grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 776, Badin, NC 28009-0776 or Hospice of Stanly County, 960 North First Street, Albemarle, NC 28001.

GRADY STURDIVANT
CHAPEL HILL -- Grady Sturdivant, 65, of Chapel Hill died July 27, in the barber shop that he owned and operated for over 40 years.
He was a loving husband, father and brother. He was a retired volunteer fireman with the Carrboro Fire Department, a member of the Masonic Lodge, a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Carrboro Methodist Church.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 Thursday at the Carrboro Methodist Church with the Rev. Daniel Earhardt. Burial will follow in Westwood Cemetery.
He is survived by: wife, Jane Whitaker Sturdivant; daughters, Sherri S. Woodcock of Chapel Hill, Donna S. Milner of Raleigh and Terri Compton of Durham; sons, Ricky Sturdivant of Chapel Hill and Russ Sturdivant of Snow Camp; sisters, Ruth S. Penninger of Carrboro, Mary Griffin and Jessie Andrews of Durham; brothers, John Sturdivant of Pittsboro and Larry Sturdivant of Chapel Hill; six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday evening at Walkers Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Carrboro Methodist Church.

HENRY PRESTON WINSTEAD
ELM CITY -- Henry Preston Winstead, 85, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999. He was born September 7, 1913, son of the late John Elbert and Senora Sherrod Winstead. Mr. Winstead was a retired attendant and member with Coopers Fire and Resque Squad and a member of Free Union Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving: wife, Onnie Gray Lamm Winstead of the home; daughter, Marie Perry of Raleigh; son, George Winstead of the home; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sister, Pearl Tyson of Nashville; brother, Raymond Winstead of Rocky Mount.
Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount with Rev. Lester Duncan, Rev. Kenneth Phillips and Rev. Romie Bunn officiating. Burial will follow at Free Union Free Will Baptist Chapel Cemetery, Spring Hope. Family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times 3032 Volunteer Road, Elm City, NC.

HENRY M. YOUNG
BURLINGTON -- Henry M. Young, 74, died Monday, July 26, 1999 at his residence.
A memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 1999 at First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Young was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington.
Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Nancy M. Young; son, Andy Young of Cary; daughter, Melissa Cross and son-in-law, Bob; grandchildren, Meredith and Robert Cross of Aiken, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, 730 Hermitage Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
The family will receive friends in the church board room beginning at 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. prior to the service.

DANIEL FLETCHER "DANNY" AUSTIN
RALEIGH -- Daniel Fletcher "Danny" Austin, 29, of 5516 Edington Lane, a commercial heating and air contractor, died early Friday morning, July 23, 1999.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, Knightdale. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: parents, Tommy Lee Austin and Suzanne S. Austin; wife, Alyssa Austin of Raleigh; son, Kalyn Austin of Raleigh; daughter, Raeanna Austin of Raleigh; brother, Terry Lee Austin and his wife Leigh Austin of Raleigh; niece, Ashlyn Austin of Raleigh; paternal grandmother, Marie Jordan Austin of Wilmington; maternal grandfather, Bill Schmidt of Zebulon; aunt, Maxine Austin Berry of Wilmington; special mom, Joyce Montgomery of Wilmington.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale and other times at the home, 5516 Edington Lane, Raleigh, NC 27604.

J.T. BEDDARD JR.
AYDEN -- Mr. J.T. Beddard Jr., 79, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999 at Pitt Co. Memorial Hospital.
Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at Elm Grove F.W.B. Church, Ayden. Burial, Ayden Cemetery.
Mr. Beddard was a lifetime member of Elm Grove F.W.B. Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and choir member. He was a member and past president of the Layman's League. He was also a member of Red Men Mohican Tribe #56.
Survivors: wife, Elma Hines Beddard of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Bob Tillman of Wilkesboro; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnnie and Sandra Beddard of Ayden, Wesley and Kaye Beddard of Fayetteville; son, Wallace E. Beddard of Ayden; brothers, Walter Beddard and Garland Beddard, both of Ayden; sisters, Thelma Fellows and Betty Johnson, both of Raleigh, Nan Honeycutt of Beaufort, Lucille Briley of Ayden; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Mt. Olive College, c/o Elma and J.T. Beddard Endowment Fund, Mt. Olive, NC 28365; or to Elm Grove F.W.B. Church, Ayden, NC 28513.

VICTOR R. BENNETT
FUQUAY-VARINA -- Victor Robert Bennett, 70, died Thursday, July 22, 1999.
Funeral service 3 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 1999 at the Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Surviving: wife, Nancy D. Bennett; son, Victor Robert Bennett Jr. of Fuquay-Varina; brother, Don L. Bennett and wife, Ramona of Albermarle; mother-in-law, Frances L. Dillard of Wake Forest; brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman and Irene Dillard, Earl and Teresa Dillard, Brian and Rhonda Dillard, all of Wake Forest, Randy and Judy Dillard of Franklinton; several cousins; nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 24, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home.

GLADYS STRICKLAND BREWER
LORIS, SC -- Mrs. Gladys Strickland Brewer, age 76, of Cary, NC and formerly of Loris, SC, died Thursday, July 22, 1999 in Cary, NC, following an illness. Born January 5, 1923 in Warsaw, NC, Mrs. Brewer was the daughter of the late Julius Leonard Strickland and the late Nora Alice Blanchard Strickland. The widow of Carnegie Pearson "C.P." Brewer, Mrs. Brewer was a member of the Eastern Star, Woodmen of the World, Loris Garden Club, and a member of the Loris First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Brewer graduated from Louisburg College located in Louisburg, NC and Kings Business College of Raleigh, NC. Mrs. Brewer also served on the staff of the Durham area recruiting service for WACS and aviation cadets and served as a clerk-typist at the Army Recruiting Station in Raleigh, NC during World War II.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Galicia Hughes of Cary, NC; one sister, Addie Mae Pelt of Goldsboro, NC; and three grandchildren, David Hughes, Daniel Hughes and Nora-Ann Hughes all of Cary, NC.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 24, 1999 at 11 a.m. from the Loris First United Methodist Church with burial in the Patterson Cemetery. The Reverends Doug Gilliland and Gene Norris will be officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Loris First United Methodist Church, 3507 Broad Street, Loris, SC 29569 or to the Duke Medical Center, Duke Comprehensive Volunteer Program, Durham, NC 27710. Directed by Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris.

BRUCE W. DUNN
RALEIGH -- Mr. Bruce W. Dunn, 82, of 9337 Baileywick Rd., died Thursday. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: spouse, Sophia J. Dunn; daughter, Juanita Dunn Goodwyn of Raleigh; sons, Bruce D. Dunn and Donald W. Dunn, both of Raleigh; sisters, Leona Thompson of Durham, Georgia Ferrell of Raleigh; two grandchildren.
Visitation 1:30-2 p.m. Sunday, prior to the funeral service.

G. BARHAM FLEETWOOD
REIDSVILLE -- G. Barham Fleetwood, 86, of 1324 Cotswald Terrace, died Friday, July 23, 1999 at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville, North Carolina.
Funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 25, 1999 at 2 p.m. at Severn Baptist Church in Severn, North Carolina. Burial will follow in the Severn Cemetery.
Mr. Fleetwood was a native of Severn, North Carolina. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Wake Forest University. He had been a high school teacher and principal in LaCrosse, Virginia and Severn, North Carolina. He was a veteran of WWII, retiring as a lieutenant commander in the US Navy Reserve after 20 years of service. He was also a marketing specialist for the Peanut Growers Cooperative Marketing Association and a member of Severn Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth W. Fleetwood in 1982 and a sister, Frances Long.
Survivors include his son, Dr. George Robert Fleetwood of Reidsville; daughter, Martha Fleetwood Tardieu of chapel Hill; grandchildren, Susan Fleetwood Hinkle of Raleigh, Paul Fleetwood of Asheboro, Jessica Tardieu and Christian Tardieu of Chapel Hill; nephew, Atwood Long of Severn; niece, Jessie Matthew of Graham, N.C.
