She grew up in Haney, B.C., with her brother, Bruce Palmer, now of Sidney, British Columbia, and sister Catherine Rudolph, now deceased, under the love and guidance of her Scottish mother, Louise Falconer Palmer, a skilled legal secretary. Her mother taught her that women are equal to any challenge.
Ruth earned a BSc in Genetics and a MSc in Oceanography at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She began doctoral work in marine Botany at the University of Hawaii where she also excelled in advanced organic chemistry and mathematics. She became a United States citizen in 1997.

Ruth has lived in Durham for 35 years where she has been as adept at gardening and her greenhouse as she has at rearing bright, fun, optimistic children and comforting her 7 grandchildren and imbuing them all with common sense, logic, and wit.
She was a Silver Life Master duplicate bridge player and was always very pleasant as partner or opponent, and she served on the Board of Unit 191 of the American Contract Bridge League. She enjoyed bowling in the local league for over 30 years, currently with the Sportettes.
While her children were growing up, she made over 100,000 colorful beads by rolling strips of paper taken from grocery bags, cigarette wrappers, wall paper, and junk mail. She strung her beads into attractive necklaces and 3-dimensional baubles and she made several bead doorways and wall hangings. These are admired by folks from far and wide for their Craftsmanship and design.
We have all been enriched by her strong, steady, positive approach to life that always centered on her family.
