PRINCETON -- Dobie Reginald Potts, 64, died at his home Sunday. He was the son of the late Hugh Norman and Mary Leona Lamm Potts and was a retired paint supervisor at O'Berry Center in Goldsboro. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in Parrish Memorial Baptist Church near Selma. Burial will be in the Princeton Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Norma Leigh Mitchell Potts; daughters, Janet Medlin and her husband, Thomas Medlin, Jr. of Princeton, Sallie Potts of Princeton, Cathy Massey and her husband, Benjamin "Ben" Massey, Sr. of Selma; brothers, Hugh, Norman "Raymond Potts, Jr. and Delton Ray Potts, Sr., both of Goldsboro; sisters, Lillian Catherine Gallagher of Goldsboro, Rose Evelyn VanTuyl of Pikeville; brother-in-law, Cedric Mitchell of Princeton; grandchildren, Thomas Medlin, III, Catherine Massey, Victoria Massey and Benjamin "BJ" Massey, Jr.

JAMES TRUMAN SLOAN
ANGIER -- James Truman Sloan, age 54, a farmer of Angier died Tuesday.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Overby-Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Richard Walker officiating. Private burial will be later.
Survivors two daughters, Terry S. Holt of Coats and Tammy S. Barnes of Mamers; son, Tony R. Sloan of Angier; two brothers, Joe and Dan SLoan of Angier; two grandchildren, Brittnie Lynn Holt and Teria Rays Sloan.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

JOSEPHINE THOMAS
RALEIGH -- Josephine P. Thomas, of 5404 Emerson Drive, formerly of 1317 Beauty Avenue and 2901 Madelyn Watson Lane, Apt. 6, died Monday, September 13, 1999. Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday, September 16, at Grace A.M.E. Zion Church. Interment to follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens.
She is survived by one son, Frank Thomas; three daughters, Alice Peebles (Erving) and Dr. Maxine Highsmith, all of Raleigh, Anna Lane (Eddie) of Richmond, Va.; sister, Dorothy Mae Thomas of Raleigh; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

MARY LOUISE VIEHE
CHAPEL HILL -- Mary Louise Viehe, 79, of Chapel Hill, NC and Chautauqua, NY, died Sept. 12, 1999, of cancer after a short illness. The daughter of the late Thomas Bruce Spratt and Ellen Robinson Spratt of Charlotte, she was a native of Charlotte, NC. She attended Queens College, Charlotte and graduated from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She received her Masters of Social Work degree from Boston University.
She had lived in New Haven, CT, Lincoln, NE, Philadelphia, and 35 years in Amherst, NY. She moved to Chapel Hill in 1991.
She was the former Director of the Department of Social Work at Memorial Hospital in Charlotte. She also worked for Grace-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut and Children's Hospital in Buffalo. She then became the school social worker for the Williamsville, NY, Central Schools and for 18 years was school social worker for the Clarence, NY, Central Schools, retiring in 1985.
She was a member of the United Church of Chapel Hill and the Women's Fellowship. She was corresponding secretary of the Chapel Hill chapter of the American Association of University Women, a member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and West Triangle Chapter of the United Nations Association. She was also an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Peace Action, the Interfaith Council for Social Services, the Afterwards Book Club, and Peer Learning.
Mary Louise Viehe is survived by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Carl A. Viehe of Pittsburgh and three grandchildren, Stephanie Voss, Andrew and Matthew Viehe. She also leaves a brother, Thomas B. (Carolyn) Spratt of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Ellenora (Andrew) Barker of Love Valley, NC, Joy (Cecil) McCall of Ellerbe.
A memorial service will be held at the United Church of Chapel Hill on Sunday, September 26, 1999, at 3 p.m.

GEORGE R. ELLERSON
RALEIGH -- George Raymond Ellerson, of 4904 Lakemont Dr., died Friday, September 24, 1999 in Warrenton, VA. He was a WW II Naval Gunnery Mate. He was an IBM retiree of 38 years. He was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church since 1966.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 1999,at St. Marks United Methodist Church. Rev. Bryan Gentle of Fayetteville will officiate. Burial service pending to be in New York.
Surviving: wife, Alice Carver Ellerson and children, Scott Ellerson of Jacksonville, FL, Anna Ellerson Moon of Raleigh, Eddie Ellerson of Cary, Greg and Eloise Ellerson of Raleigh and New Bern; granddaughter, Darcy Ellerson of Liberty.
Memorial contributions to St. Marks United Methodist Church or the Cancer Society or Heart Foundation or charity of your choice.
He has fought the good fight of faith and has finished the race, and kept the faith. Now there is in store for him the crown of righteousness.

JOHN W. GRAHAM IV
SMITHFIELD -- John W. Graham, IV of 177 Serenity Drive, Smithfield, NC and formerly of 324 Main Street, Navassa died Wednesday.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 1999 at 11 a.m. on the campus at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC.

HARRY W. ABBITT, JR.
GREENSBORO -- Mr. Harry West Abbitt, Jr., 80, of Fountain Manor Drive, Greensboro and 314 E. Boardwalk, Atlantic Beach, died Tuesday, September 28, 1999, at his home.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Abbitt at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 30, 1999, in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Interment will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson.
Harry West Abbitt, Jr. was born in Wilson, on February 20, 1919 to the late Harry West Abbitt and Margaret DixonAbbitt. Mr. Abbitt graduated from Charles L. Coon High School, Wilson. He attended Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. He was retired Regional Manager with Nationwide Insurance Company and a Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) Professional. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church where he was former president of the Men's Club. Mr. Abbitt loved tennis and golf and was a member of Bogue Banks Country Club in Atlantic Beach. He was a 32-degree Mason, member of the New Bern Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. Mr. Abbitt was a former member of the Greensboro Jaycees, the Greensboro Civitan Club, and a Rotarian.
Harry West Abbitt, Jr., served as a Captain in the United States Army, 84th Infantry Division, 335th Regiment during World War II, serving in France, where he was awarded the Silver Star for Bravery.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Catharine Thomas Abbitt of the home; daughters, Dr. Catharine Abbitt Hill and her husband, Henry of Greensboro and Lucile Abbitt Bond and her husband, Major of Hickory; sister, Margaret Abbitt Goodwin of Wilson; three grandchildren, John Matthews Teeter of Athens, GA, Charles Abbitt Bond of Murfreesboro and Harry West Bond of Hickory; brother-in-law, John R. Harriss of Wilson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Thompson Children's Home, 6801 St. Peter's Lane, Matthews, NC 28105-8450.

MYRTLE O. ATKINSON
MORRISVILLE -- Myrtle O. Atkinson, 68, of 7326 Green Hope School Road, Morrisville, N.C., died at her home Sunday Sept. 26, 1999 due to an extended illness. Mrs. Atkinson was a retired waitress and greatly loved by all who knew her and will be sorely missed by her family.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday Sept. 29, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 511 West Williams St. (Hwy. 55) Apex, N.C. Officiating will be Rev. Jim Boltz. Burial will be in the Green Level Baptist Church Cemetery, Apex, N.C.
Survivors are son, Edward H. Stallings Jr. of Pittsboro, N.C.; five daughters, Donna Adams of Cary, N.C., Vivian Cone of Morrisville, N.C., Susan Ridgway of Apex, N.C., April Levasseur of Raleigh, Michele Koblitz and husband, Dennis of Cary, N.C.; her stepmother, Norma Olinger of New Hill, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Tootie Sanderford of New Hill, N.C. and Jingle Diane Bennett of Sanford, N.C.; aunts, Kathleen Batchelor, Rachel Hatley and Frances Thompson, all of Apex, N.C., Ruby Mizelle of Jamesville, N.C. and Eula Batchelor of Morrisville, N.C.

SYLVIA JEAN COCHRANE
ANGIER -- Sylvia Jean Cochrane, 55, of Angier died at Raleigh Community Hospital in Raleigh on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999.
Funeral, 3 p.m. Thursday in Pleasant Union Christian Church with Rev. Brian Kinlaw officiating. Burial, Harnett Memorial Park.
Survivors: two daughters, Renee C. Yongue of Greenville, Michelle Cochrane; three brothers, Bennie Ted Johnson, Robert Eugene Johnson, and Larry Richard Johnson all of Lillington; one sister, Patricia Faye Shaw of Lillington; one grandson, Harrison Daniel Yongue.
Visitation at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home Wednesday from 7-9 p.m., other times at the home of Larry Johnson.

DOROTHY LOUISE DAVIS
RALEIGH -- Dorothy Louise Davis, 79, died Monday, September 27, 1999. Mrs. Davis met and married Wallace B. Davis on January 17, 1942 in Washington, DC. She raised her family in McLean, Northern Virginia and was a Credit Manager at 1st American Bank, now First Union. The Davis's retired in 1979 and moved to Long Beach, Oak Island, where they resided for 18 years.
Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband of 57 years; two sons, Michael S. Davis of Cincinnati, OH, Bradley W. Davis of Charlotte; daughter, Karen McKenzie of Raleigh; five grandchildren.
Services will be held on Thursday September 30, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Raleigh Memorial Park Chapel.
If desired, memorials to the Alzheimers Association.

RALEIGH -- Harper Jones Leonard, 85, of 5702 Woodcrest Drive, a retired employee of Winn Dixie, died Monday.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Ernest Myatt Presbyterian Church. Graveside service, 2 p.m. Thursday at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lexington, NC.
Surviving: wife, Clara Snyder Leonard; step-son, Cary Broadway of Merry Point, VA; grandchildren, Karen Moody of Herndon, VA and Barry Broadway of Manassas, VA; brother, Grady Leonard of Lexington; and great-grandchildren, Colin Moody, Trevor Moody, Garrett Moody, Carly Broadway and Julie Broadway.

ELIZABETH W. SHRINER
ARLINGTON, TX -- Elizabeth Willis Shriner, 87, a homemaker, died Tuesday, September 28, 1999.
Memorial services 3 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 1999 at Straiits Methodist Church, Gloucester, North Carolina. Burial, Bayview Cemetery, Morehead City, North Carolina.
She was born on November 5, 1911 in Gloucester, N.C. She recently moved to Fort Worth from Bogart, Georgia where she had resided for the part 40 years.
She was of strong will and faith and had always placed herself in the hands of the Lord. " I am home in Heaven, Oh, so happy and bright! There is perfect joy and beauty in this everlasting light."
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Franklin W. Shriner and her parents, Wilbur and Olivia Whitehurst Willis. She is survived by son, John Shriner and wife Dana of Athens, Ga.; daughter, Merena Shannon and husband, Michael of Fort Worth; sister, Rebecca Sanders of Morehead City, North Carolina; grandchildren, Tony May and wife Laura of Alpharetta, Ga., Jason Shriner and wife Melissa of Athens, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Carter and Hunter May of Alpharetta, Ga.; extended family: long time friends, Cathy and William Finley of Piedmont, South Carolina and many nieces and nephews.
