DARRELL B. SIMMONS
FRANKLINTON -- Darrell B. Simmons, born April 6, 1947, died September 26, 1999 after a lengthy illness. Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his parents, Duke W. and Beatrice Hale Simmons and a brother, Wayne Simmons. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda W. Simmons; son, Cody W. Simmons of the home and NCSU; sister, Ella S. Rowe of Louisburg; stepbrother, Chuck Nixon of Wilson; three nieces; five nephews and many close friends.
He was blessed with many cards prayers and visits during his illness.
Family and friends were received at Lancaster Funeral home on Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at the home at 114 Beechwood Road, Franklinton. At Mr. Simmons request, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Franklin County to Staffbuilders, 1937 Hwy. 39 N, Louisburg, NC 27549 or to the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas and Lancaster Funeral Home.

MARJORIE M. SMITH
ATLANTIC -- Marjorie Murphy Smith, 83, of Atlantic, died September 27, 1999, at Carteret General Hospital, Morehead City, N.C.
She was a past member of the Women's Auxiliary of Taylor Extended Care Facility in Sea Level, N.C.
Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 1999 at Atlantic United Methodist Church, Atlantic, N.C. Burial will follow in the Atlantic United Methodist Church, Atlantic, N.C. Burial will follow in the Atlantic Community Cemetery.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Tosto of Madison, N.C.; three sons, John W. Smith Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., Jeffrey Smith of Stacy, N.C., Dick Smith of Atlantic, N.C. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 7-9 p.m. at Atlantic United Methodist Church, 146 School Drive, Atlantic, N.C. 28511.

JOSEPH SPENCER
RALEIGH -- Joseph Willis Spencer, 69, of 605 E. Bragg St., died Sept. 25, 1999. Funeral 12-noon Friday, Lightner Funeral Home. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: sisters, Mary Hunter of Raleigh, Minnie Barnes of New York, NY; brothers, William Spencer and Thomas Spencer, both of Raleigh.

CYRUS "BERKLEY" THOMAS JR.
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Mr. Cyrus Berkley Thomas Jr., 76, of 24 Cedar St., Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, September 27, 1999 at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh.
Mr. Thomas was born in Broadway, Lee County, the son of the late Cyrus B. Thomas Sr. and Geraldine Primm Thomas. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by one brother, Mr. Charles B. Thomas.
Mr. Thomas was a World War II veteran and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Rosemary Baptist Church where he was a lifetime deacon and a member of the James Davis Sunday School Class. Mr. Thomas was employed with Durham Life Insurance Co. with 50 years of service, retiring in 1995 as a manager. Mr. Thomas was also a member of the Roanoke Rapids Rotary Club for 39 years, serving as president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Rosemary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tom Bodkin. Burial will follow in the Cedar Woods Cemetery, Weldon.
Surviving: wife of 57 years, Lucille Traylor Thomas; two brothers, William C. Thomas and wife Mirian of Lakeland, Fla., John P. Thomas and wife, Ann of Cary; sister, Eloise T. Carr and husband, Herman of Chadburn; sister-in-law, Ann B. Thomas of South Bristol, Maine; brother-in-law, James B. Taylor and wife, Joan of Raleigh; sister-in-law, Thelma T. Gatewood and husband, James of Trinity.
Memorial donations may be made to the Rosemary Baptist Church Building Fund.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hockaday Funeral Home and other times at the home, 24 Cedar St.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

HELEN MAE YOUNG
RALEIGH -- Helen Mae Young, of 1321 Raleigh Blvd., died Sunday, September 26, 1999. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 1999 at Tupper Memorial Baptist Church. Visitation precedes the service beginning at 1 :30 p.m. Burial to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
She is survived by a sister, Ella Adams of Raleigh; nephews, Eric Adams of Raleigh and Larry Hunter of Washington, D.C.; along with a host of other cousins and friends.

LEE ROBERT LUCAS
ELM CITY -- Lee R. Lucas, 78, of 5611 Lucas Rd. in Elm City, died Sunday afternoon, October 3, 1999, at Wake Medical Center. He was a lifetime resident of Wilson and Nash counties. Lucas was serving in the Army and was stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was a farmer for many years and retired from Burlington Sheffield. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. He retired from the Cooper's Volunteer Fire Department and was an active member of American Legion Post 13.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Virginia Bridgers Lucas of the home. He was the son of the late Frank and Lena Daniel Lucas. He leaves four daughters, Gladys Lucas of Hawaii, Dale Poland of West Mount, Dianne Sanders and Jenny Lucas Wyatt, both of Sandy Cross; son, Doug Lucas of Rocky Mount; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. He also leaves several brothers and sisters of Wilson County, Daisy Barnes, Pearl Lucas, Frank Lucas, Jr., Dorsey Lucas, Gladys Whitfield and Roland Wayne Lucas.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clayton and Earl Lucas.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, October 7, 1999 from the Shingleton Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Johnny Ray Gardner. Interment will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Shingleton Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and other times at the home.

KATHARINE NASH CALDWELL
CHAPEL HILL -- Katharine Nash Caldwell (age 82) of Carol Woods, Chapel Hill died October 5, 1999. Born in New York in 1917, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Cleveland Nash, architect, and Mary Screven Arnold Nash, portrait painter and the granddaughter of Arthur Cleveland Coxe, Bishop of Western New York.
Katrina attended Chapel Hill grade school, St. Timothy's in Stevenson, Maryland and graduated with the Class of 1937 from Mt. Vernon College. For a number of years she worked as an interior decorator for the US Department of State on embassies, consulates and residencies. In Washington she and her parents were active in St. John's Episcopal Church on Lafayette Square.
In 1957 she married Edward E. Caldwell and moved to Baltimore. There Katrina was active in the Junior League, several garden clubs, and the Altar Guild of the Cathedral of the Incarnation. She was a volunteer and served on the Board of the Keswick Home for the Incurables.
Living in Kensington, Maryland for a short time, she was head of the Altar Guild at Christ Church. In 1974 she and her husband returned to Chapel Hill. Katrina served on the Altar Guild of the Chapel of the Cross and volunteered and served on the Board of Meals on Wheels.
She was active in the Colonial Dames beginning in 1948 with membership in the District of Columbia and continuing as part of the Durham-Orange County Committee of the North Carolina Society. As well she held membership in the Mayflower Society of North Carolina. Katrina was a long time member of the Candlelight Waltz group of Washington.
Survivors include her husband, Edward E. Caldwell, of Carol Woods, Chapel Hill, two sisters-in-law, Martha Painter Caldwell (Mrs. Robert W.) of Alexandria, Virginia and Martha B. Caldwell of Harrisonburg, Virginia, a niece, two nephews and a number of cousins, including Deborah Rutter Skoland (Mrs. Theodore) of Walterboro, South Carolina.
Memorial service will be held at the Chapel of the Cross, 304 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, 1999.
Memorial contributions may be donated to one's personal choice.
Arrangements are by Walker's Funeral Home.

SHERIFF EDWARD H. DANIELS
MERRY HILL -- Sheriff (Retired) Edward Hale Daniels, 80, died October 4, 1999 at his home. He was a native of Bertie County, son of the late Edward E. and Eula Hale Daniels.
Mr. Daniels was born March 9, 1919 in Perrytown. He was a graduate of Colerain High School. During World War II, Mr. Daniels served in the US Army as Cpl. from June 26, 1941 thru Oct. 17, 1945. He received 4 Battle Stars (including D-Day) and served in Iceland, England, Frances, Belgium and Germany.
Mr. Daniels was appointed Deputy Sheriff of Bertie County in 1951 and served as deputy until 1962. He was sworn in as Sheriff in August of '62 and served the citizens of Bertie County as Sheriff for 20 years. He also served as President of the North Carolina Sheriff's Association in 1980.
He was a member of Merry Hill Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. He was a member of Charity Lodge #5 in Windsor.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Phelps Daniels; son, Charles Edward Daniels of Windsor; two daughters, Bonnie Daniels Lucas of Kinston and Margaret D. Adams of Ahoskie; brother, Webester R. Daniels of Colerain; four sisters, Helen D. Cullipher of Orlando, Fl., Lorraine D. Keener of Roper, NC, Vivan D. Todd of Virginia Beach, Va., and Malva D. Hoggard of Newport News, Va.; six grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 1999 at Merry Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph Knight. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor and at other times at the home, 1645 US 17 North. Family and friends will assemble at the home in Midway following the funeral service.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Merry Hill Baptist Church, to the Midway-Merry Hill Fire Department or to the Bertie County Rescue Squad.

ELBERT DOZIER
RALEIGH -- Mr. Elbert Dozier was born January 15, 1920 to the late Hubert and Olivia N. Dozier. He departed this life on October 4, 1999 at Rehab Health Center in Raleigh. He was educated in the Wake County Public School System.
Elbert joined Wake Chapel Baptist Church at an early age. He served as a custodian in the Old Wake Chapel and the New Wake Chapel. He served many years as the superintendent of the Sunday School Dept. Elbert served on the Deacon Board for over 50 years. He was also the chairman of the Deacon Board, member of the Senior Choir, Male Chorus and he always enjoyed participating in the Senior Citizens Ministry.
Elbert served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged after serving four years. He was employed with Carolina Builders for 20 years.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife, Esther D. Dozier; three sisters, Lucy Bowen of East Orange, N.J., Ida Haymon of Irvington, N.J. and Pathenia Davis of Raleigh; brother, Walter Dozier of Riverside, Calif.; sister-in-law, Frances Dozier; step-sisters, Rosalene, Elois and Pearline; step-brothers, Richard, James and Ernest, all of Raleigh; aunt, Lemetta Dozier of Durham; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be held 12 p.m. Thursday at Wake Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will be at Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday prior to the funeral.

H. WALLACE ELLIS
WILSON -- H. Wallace Ellis, 74, retired manager with FCX and Southern States died Monday, October 4, 1999.
He was salutatorian of his class at Saratoga High School, a Army veteran of WWII having served in the European Theatre and was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church.
Mr. Ellis was preceded in death by his father, Henry Ellis and son, H. Wallace Ellis III.
Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday, Thomas--Yelverton Funeral Chapel. Interment, Craft Family Cemetery, east of Saratoga.
Surviving is his wife, Betty Bulluck Ellis; daughter, Nancy Ellis Boyette of Huntersville; mother, Ethel Craft Ellis of Wilson; beloved grandchildren, Bob Ellis of Clayton, Geannine Boyette of Wilmington, Will Pope and Kevin Chewning of Wilson, Morgan Chewning of Greenville and Leslie Proctor of Pinetops; sister and brother-in-law, Jennie and Newton Williford of Wilson; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Delance Ellis of Saratoga; step-son, Tom Chewning of Greenville.
The family will be at the funeral home, today, 7-8:30.

ERNEST RUDY FRANKS
RALEIGH -- Ernest Rudy Franks, 72, of 116 St. Mary's St., died Sunday, October 3, 1999.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 Wilmington St.

LESTER M. GREENE JR.
RALEIGH -- Lester Maxwell Greene, Jr., 69, retired president of Stainless Steel Fabricators, died Saturday, October 2, 1999 in a Mt. Pleasant, SC hospital.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 1999 at Sorrells Grove Baptist Church, Morrisville, NC followed by visitation in the church according to McAlister Funeral Home, Charleston, SC.
Mr. Greene was born in Burlington, VT, a son of Dr. Lester M. Greene, Sr. and Josephine Parker Greene. He was a member of Sorrells Grove Baptist Church and was graduated from NC State University. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and was wounded in Korea.
Surviving are his wife, Janice Brockman Greene of Raleigh, NC; two sons, Lester Maxwell Greene, III of Raleigh, NC and James Earl Shockley, II of Charlotte, NC; one daughter, Diane Shockley Harris of Raleigh, NC and seven grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sorrells Grove Baptist Church, 210 Sorrells Grove Church Rd., Morrisville, NC 27560.
