Yorrington Abrahams

Yorrington "Yorrie" Xavier Abrahams died May 21, 2007. He was 73.

He was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and was the former owner of Simply Super Car Wash and a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered May 30 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with the Rev. John Durbin presiding. Burial will follow in Markham Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Ellison-Abrahams; a daughter, Celeste Jackson; two sons, Yorrie Abrahams and Ajene Hinton-Abrahams; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas More Building Fund, 940 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

C.W. Ferguson

Christopher Wilson Ferguson died Feb. 17, 2006 in High Point. He was 61.

Born Wesley Wilson Ferguson in Danville, Va., he changed his name upon converting to Catholicism and with the publication of his book, "The Molting Season." He received a bachelor's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and a master's from UNC-Greensboro. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam from January to December 1966. He taught English at the U.S. Marine Corps base high school in Quantico, Va. in 1971 and at UNC-Chapel Hill from 1974 to 1975, and was a professor of English at the University of Texas at Houston from 1975 to 1978. Baptized as a Catholic as a teenager, he held avid interests in nature and religions and philosophies of the East, especially Taoism, throughout his adulthood. He continued to write stories and poems until recent years.

Upon the publication of "The Molting Season," a novel described as semi-autobiographical, a book review in The New York Times declared him a new voice from the South. By 1978 severe mental illness permanently derailed his writing career and he was institutionalized for much of the remainder of his life.

A graveside service was held Feb. 18, 2006 in Blanch.

Survivors include a daughter, Melissa Erin Ferguson of Silver Spring, Md.; sister, Linda Dale Dunn of Denton; brothers, James Reynolds of Robbins and Jerry Reynolds of Danville, Va.; and one grandson.

Memorial donations may be made to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill at the National Headquarters, 2107 Wilson Blvd., Suite 300, Arlington, VA 22201-3042, or to a local NAMI chapter.

Marguerite T. Perry

Marguerite "Geet" Thompson Perry of Chapel Hill died Feb. 17, 2006. She was 80.

Born in Durham County, she was married to Ben Perry for 57 years. A graduate of St. Mary's Women's College, she was the administrative assistant at the John Motley Morehead Foundation at UNC-Chapel Hill for 28 years and served as volunteer administrative assistant for the "Justice Era Football Team" reunions. She was an enthusiastic "Nifty-Niners" and an avid bridge and dominoes player. She was a long-time member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church of Chapel Hill.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 22 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; sons, Sam Perry of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Michael Perry of Chatham County; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Minna K. Abernethy

Minna Karp Abernethy died Feb. 16, 2006. She was 94.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she followed her husband, Milton, to Chapel Hill, where they founded the Intimate Bookshop. She also worked as a social worker for the WPA, co-edited a literary magazine, championed peace and civil rights, and scoffed at McCarthyism. In 1954 she moved to New York where she remained until 2000, when she returned to Chapel Hill to live with her family.

Survivors include a sister, Mary; two daughters, Ellen and Amy; and two grandchildren.

Rather than flowers or charitable donations, the family requests a higher turnout at the next election.

Samuel Ernst

Samuel T. Ernst of Chapel Hill died Feb. 17, 2006 at his home.

He was 58.

A funeral was held Feb. 19 at New Hope Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a sister, Donna Birtchett of Chapel Hill.

C.R. Lamprecht

Christine Rosemond Lamprecht of Greenville died Feb. 18, 2006. She was 81.

A native of Chapel Hill, she lived in Greenville the last 10 years.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 25 at Christ Presbyterian Church in Winterville. Interment will follow at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Hillsborough. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville.

Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Sechler of Crofton, Md., and Marianne Voorbrood of Hattiesburg, Miss.; a son, Tom Lamprecht of Greenville; two brothers, Albert Montgomery Rosemond of Chapel Hill and John Rosemond of Roanoke, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

James E. Millett

James Ellsworth Millett of Chapel Hill died unexpectedly Feb. 17, 2006 in Chapel Hill.

A native of Waterville, Maine, he graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, Mass., and attended Rossol College in Blackpool, England for a year. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont and a law degree from the University of Maine School of Law in 1976.

He was assistant district attorney for Kennebec County, the Waterville City solicitor and partnered in two firms before moving to Scarborough in 1985. He remained in private practice until he moved to Chapel Hill in 1997 when he was employed by Research Triangle Institute and the Best Western University Inn.

Memorial services will be held Feb. 24 in Portland, Maine.

Survivors include his wife, Darline Joy Cloudman; children Kate Rojas of Atlanta, Ga., Corey James Millett of Chapel Hill, Morgan Millett of Greensboro; and a sister, Jane Dornish of Winslow, Maine.

Memorial donations may be made to the Center for Grieving Children, P.O. Box 1438, Portland, Maine, 04104.

John P. Filley

John P. Filley of The Villages in Florida, died Feb. 16, 2006. He was 83.

Born in New Haven, Conn., he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He received a medical degree from Yale University. His residency was in child psychiatry at the UNC School of Medicine. For 16 years, he was on the faculty of the UNC School of Public Health. After leaving UNC, he held public sector administrative roles in Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Upon retirement, he and his wife, Karen, traveled the country for 10 years. An avid birder, he recorded 494 North American species in his lifetime. In 1997 he and Karen settled in Florida.

A gathering to celebrate his life will be at The Villages on March 4.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Filley; a son, Bruce of Yarra Junction, Australia; three daughters, Brenda Currin of Oxford, Susan Filley Worthy of Chapel Hill and Joanne Filley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Amy Stanton of Brandon, Fla.; a foster daughter, June Wemlinger of Thayer, Mo.; a brother, Walter Filley of Manchester Village, Vt.; a sister, Isabel Rostykus of Bellevue, Wash.; a former wife, Lois Filley of Chapel Hill; and five grandchildren..

Memorials may be made to the Hummer Bird Study Group, P.O. Box 250, Clay, AL 35048.

Dirvon D. Hammond

Dirvon D. Hammond of Chapel Hill died Feb. 22, 2006. He was 89.

He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served until after World War II ended. He was a civil service employee of the U.S. Air Force until retirement in 1977. He and his wife moved to Chapel Hill in March 2005.

Graveside services and interment of ashes will be in Stockton, Ala., in the spring.

Survivors include his wife, Elna; two children, John Hammond of Pittsboro and Elizabeth Singleton of Evans, Colo.; and one grandson.

Memorials contributions may be sent to the Salvation Army.

Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

Louise M. Heineman

Louise Mary Heineman died Feb. 13, 2006 at UNC Hospitals. She was 93.

Born in Chicago, Ill., she was a homemaker and member of St. Thomas More Church.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. March 4 at St. Thomas More.

Timothy H. Kimrey

Timothy Hooper Kimrey died peacefully in his Chapel Hill home on Feb. 22, 2006. He was 63.

Born and raised in Raleigh, he graduated from Davidson College in 1965 and received a master of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York in 1971. He received a master of sacred theology degree in biblical studies from Union in 1980.

In 1970 he was ordained as a minister. He served a stated supply position at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Durham (1973-74) and served as pastor at The Church of Reconciliation in Chapel Hill (1974-1991). He retired as a member of New Hope Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church USA in 1991. Following his ministry, he devoted himself to art and to promoting house concerts through Afternoon Nap Productions.

He was director of the Experimental Housing Allowance Program of the Durham County Department of Social Services (1973-74) and chairperson of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Ministers' Association. He was the first chairperson of the Orange County Human Relations Commission (1987-90) and received the commission's first annual Pauli Murray Human Rights Award in 1990.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. March 1 at the Davie Street Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Davie St., Raleigh.

Survivors include a daughter, Erin Kimrey of Durham; and his sister, Elizabeth Kimrey of Raleigh.

Marcus L. Little

Marcus Lafayette Little of Hickory died Feb. 21, 2006. He was 96.

Born in Hickory, he graduated from Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute and Lenoir-Rhyne College. He also received a degree from N.C. State University and did graduate work at MIT. As a research chemist at Hercules Powder Company in Wilmington, Del., he made several technical advances for use by the military during World War II. In 1949, he returned to Hickory to operate Carosol Chemical Company until retirement in 1971.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 28 at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 130 39th Ave. Place, NW, Hickory. A reception will follow in the church Parish Hall.

Survivors include three children, Robert Marcus Little of Chapel Hill, Patricia Anne Little of Vale and Michael Wayne Little of Bethlehem; a sister, Mary Sheely Little Miller of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, William Frederick Little of Chapel Hill and Arthur Herbert Little of Hickory and St. George Island, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

George F. Mullen Jr.

George Francis Mullen Jr. of Pittsboro died Feb. 22, 2006 at Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was 67.

Born in Lincolnton, he graduated from UNC-Charlotte and was a long time resident of Harrisburg before moving to Pittsboro in 2002. He served as an elder, lay preacher and assistant at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg. Following his move to Pittsboro, he became a member of the Church of the Holy Family in Chapel Hill. He was owner of the Respiratory Group, a medical equipment supplier.

A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Timothy Kimbrough was held Feb. 26 at the Church of the Holy Family.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita D. Mullen; his mother, Clairee S. Mullen of Charlotte; two sons, George Martin "Marty" Mullen of Chapel Hill and Kevin Dale Skogan of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; a step-son, Andrew Dalzell of Stanley; three daughters, Dottie Mullen Porter of Williamsburg, Va., Nancy Bell of Charlotte and Sandra Jackson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two brothers, Brent Mullen and Jim Mullen, both of Charlotte; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Haiti Fund, In Memory of George Mullen in care of the Church of the Holy Family, 200 Hayes Road, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27517. Arrangements by Griffin Funeral Service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

Marie W. Wells

Marie Whitehurst Wells of Chapel Hill died Feb. 23, 2006. She was 80.

Born in Kinston, she graduated from Greenville High School in 1943. A homemaker most of her adult life, she worked for a time as a reading tutor at Elmhurst Elementary School in Greenville.

A celebration of her life will be at 3 p.m. Feb. 26 at The Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, with the Rev. Jim Pike officiating. A reception will follow in fellowship hall.

Survivors include three sons Jim Wells, Jr. of Hillsborough, Bill Wells of Winston-Salem and Stuart Wells of Durham; a sister, Marjorie Morris of Wilmington; two brothers, Don Whitehurst and B.J. Whitehurst, both of Greenville; and three grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be sent to NAMI at 309 W. Millbrook Road, Suite 121, Raleigh, NC 27609-4394.

Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.
