Joe Hakan, a longtime local architect, builder and commentator, died Tuesday morning at his home in Chapel Hill. He was 80.

Hakan, a native of Joplin, Mo., left his mark throughout the Triangle. Indeed, it's difficult to imagine Chapel Hill and UNC without the projects Hakan had a hand in either building or renovating.

"Joe cut a wide swath, and his work is out there for everyone to see and enjoy," said Jim Heavner, president of Chapel Hill's VilCom media company. "It's truly hard to overstate how effective Joe was at implementing his considerable passions in this town. He deeply, deeply cared about Carolina and Chapel Hill, and he made a lasting impression not only architecturally but with his remarkable story-telling ability."

Hakan later built the Siena Hotel on East Franklin Street.

Hakan was president of the Public-Private Partnership, which spun off the Downtown Commission. Among the local projects, he either built or consulted on were Bolinwood and Foxcroft Apartments and Booker Creek North, The Oaks and Chapel Hill Country Club, Coker Hills West and Northampton Plaza.
