Ellen Johnston-Hale

Ellen Johnston-Hale of Chapel Hill died July 11, 2005 of lung cancer at the Durham home of her son. She was 75.

A native of Washington, D.C., she published nine books and won at least 25 awards from the North Carolina Poetry Society and the Poetry Council of North Carolina. From 1971 to 1991, Hale's poetry was published in the Durham Morning Herald and was featured in the PBS video "Poetry Alive," which won the Ohio State Educational Television Award. She taught writing courses at the Chinese School in Chapel Hill and in its summer enrichment program. She performed in a music video in 1992 titled "Over 60 White Woman Rap." She was seen each year, including 2004, rollerblading in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Holiday Parade.

A private memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Aug. 20.

Survivors include three children, Barbara Johnston of New York City, Pat Johnston of Roanoke, Va., and Reed; a granddaughter and her companion, Ira Robbins.

A Poetry Fund for Children will be founded in her honor.

Florence P. Marimon

Florence Phillips Marimon of the Carol Woods Retirement Center died July 30, 2005 after a period of declining health. She was 95.

Born in Salt Lake City, she and her husband, Robert Marimon, owned and operated a trading post in Whiterocks, Utah on the Uintah Ute Indian Reservation for 28 years. After her husband's death she moved to Chapel Hill. She was active in the University Presbyterian Church. She also served as an election judge and as a volunteer for the Inter-Faith Council.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at Carol Woods.

Survivors include a son, Robert Marimon of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; a daughter, Nancy Martin of Chapel Hill; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Employee Appreciation Fund at the Carol Woods Retirement Community, 750 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514; the P.E.O. Scholar Award, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, Iowa, 50312-2899; or Inter-Faith Council, 110 W. Main St., Carrboro, N.C. 27510.

Anna Marie Milliken

Anna Marie Milliken of Pittsboro and UNC-Wilmington, died Aug 1, 2005 from injuries sustained in a vehicle crash in Chatham County. She was 21.

A native of Orange County, she graduated from Northwood High School in Pittsboro in 2002 and was a rising senior at UNC-Wilmington. While home from college, she worked for Allen & Son Pit Cooked Bar-B-Q in Bynum. She attended Lystra Baptist Church.

A funeral service will be conducted Aug. 4 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Everett Smith at Lystra Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the Milliken family from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Griffin Funeral Service and Cremation in Pittsboro.

Survivors include her parents, Teddy and Noreen Milliken, of the home; a sister, Laura of Pittsboro; and her grandparents, George and Inez Riddle of Sanford, Sheena Riddle Jones of Chapel Hill, and Polly and Dempsey Milliken of Pittsboro.

Arrangements are with Griffin Funeral Service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

Rena Roberts

Rena Junkins Roberts of Chapel Hill died July 30, 2005 at Carol Woods Retirement Center.

A native of Falkville, Ala., she was an educator in the Falkville and Lanett, Ala., city schools. She was a supervisor of student teachers with Milledgeville State University in Georgia and a consultant of education for D.C. Health Publishing Company in Boston, Mass. She taught for 25 years in the Gainesville, Fla., City Schools, and retired in 1972. She moved to Carol Woods in 1985.

A graveside service in Gainsville, Fla., is planned.

Arrangements are with Walker's Funeral Home.

Emory S. Hunt Jr.

Emory S. Hunt Jr. of Chapel Hill died in his sleep of cardiovascular disease on Oct. 13, 2004. He was 87.

A resident of Chapel Hill for half a century, he was a past director of the Medical Foundation of North Carolina. He worked for the foundation for 36 years. In recognition of this work on behalf of the medical school and the citizens of North Carolina, he received the UNC School of Medicine Distinguished Service Award in 1991. A laboratory at the Thurston Arthritis Research Center bears his name.

A veteran of World War II, he served as a battalion commander in the 65th Infantry Division in France, Germany and Austria. He received the Silver Star, the Russian Medal for Valor, first class; and the Legion of Merit. He was promoted to colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1949. He was commandant of the Durham U.S. Army Reserve School from 1962 until his retirement in 1968.

He was a longstanding member of the First Presbyterian Church and a dedicated member and a past president of the Golden Key Kiwanis Club of Chapel Hill.

A memorial service is planned. His ashes will be buried at 3 p.m. Aug. 17 at Arlington cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Burkett Hunt; a daughter, Beth Hunt of Eugene, Ore.; and two grandchildren.

The family requests that letters of remembrance be sent to 2650 Cresta de Ruta, Eugene, Ore. 97403 for his grandchildren.

Annie Cottle Ray

Annie Cottle Ray of Chapel Hill died Aug. 3, 2005. She was 91.

A native of Onslow County, she was a devoted member of Carrboro Baptist Church, where she served as teacher and student.

A funeral was conducted Aug. 6 at Clover Garden United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jim Greenlee and the Rev. Bob Eldredge. Burial services followed at Westwood cemetery in Carrboro.

Survivors include five children, Warren Ray, Joe Ray, Thomas Ray, Monty Ray, all of Chapel Hill, and Nancy Ray Shieder of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Eugenia C. Bynum of Salisbury, Frances C. Chatfield of Southern Pines and Grace C. Genco of Margate, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Walker's Funeral Home.

Max Steele

Max Steele of Chapel Hill died Aug. 1, 2005. He was 83.

A native of Greenville, S.C., he attended Vanderbilt University, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1946. He lived in Paris, where he was a friend and colleague of George Plimpton and a founding editor of The Paris Review.

Returning to Chapel Hill, he taught in the creative writing program and was director from 1967 until 1986, when he retired as professor of English emeritus. He built the creative writing department into a nationally recognized undergraduate writing curriculum with such fellow teachers as Daphne Athas and Doris Betts.

His fiction, which included "Debbie," "The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers" and short story collections, "Where She Brushed Her Hair" and "The Hat of My Mother," brought him such honors as the Harper Prize, the Saxton Memorial Trust Award, the Mayflower Cup Award and the O. Henry Prize. He received grants for his work from the National Endowment for the Arts and an honorary doctorate from Furman University.

A graveside service was conducted Au. 5 at the Old Chapel Hill cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Oliver Steele of Amherst, Mass., and Kevin Steele of Seattle, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Max Steele Scholarship Fund in care of the Arts and Sciences Foundation, 134 E. Franklin St., CB 6115, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599.

Louise F. Baddour

Louise Baddour died Aug. 19, 2005 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by her family. She was 90.

A native of Goldsboro, she worked and managed Neil Joseph's Ladies Wear in Goldsboro for more than 20 years. She had also worked at Music and Sports in Goldsboro. A lifelong member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Goldsboro, she was the first graduate of St. Mary Catholic School in 1928. She later volunteered at St. Mary, while her grandchildren were attending the school. She was married for 60 years to the late Goldsboro City Councilman Philip A. Baddour Sr.

A vigil prayer service was held Aug. 21 at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at St. Mary with the Rev. Tom Norris officiating. Burial followed in Willow Dale cemetery, Goldsboro.

Survivors include her sons, Philip A. Baddour Jr., Stephen Baddour and Neil J. Baddour, all of Goldsboro, and Richard A. Baddour of Chapel Hill; a sister, Agnes F. Harris; two brothers, John Allen Farfour and Edmund Farfour; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic School, 1000 N. Jefferson St., Goldsboro, NC 27530 or to the charity of one's choice.

Maxine Cole Bowden

Maxine Bowden of Chapel Hill died peacefully Aug. 22, 2005 at UNC hospitals. She was 87.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at Damascus Congregation Christian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Walker's Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Judy and Worth Johnson.

Survivors include her children, Monroe Bowden, Judy Johnson and Roger Bowden; brother, Clarence S. Cole; sister, Annie C. Wilson; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Damascus Church cemetery Fund.br>

Mary Etta Ennis

Mary Ennis died Aug. 19, 2005 at her home following a lengthy illness. She was 74.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., she was a wife and mother for more than 50 years.

A visitation was held Aug. 22 at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.

Survivors include her daughters, Beth Garrard and Susan Grady; a son, Richard C. Ennis Jr.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Orange County CrimeStoppers.br>

Fred B. Horton Jr.

Fred Horton of Carrboro died at his home Aug. 22, 2005 with his family by his side. He was 88.

A native of Chatham County, he retired from UNC Animal Research, where he worked for 21 years. He was a member of Bells Chapel Church. He was a sports fan and loved to hunt, fish and garden.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 24 at Walker's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jim Greenlee will officiate. Interment will follow in Westwood cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Walker's.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Clara W. Horton of the home; daughter, Betty Jo Davis; three sons, Kenneth Horton, Bobby Blake and Billy Blake; nine grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to UNC Hospice, P.O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312. br>

Ruth E. Thomas

Ruth E. Thomas died peacefully Aug. 18, 2005 at UNC Hospitals.

A scattering of her ashes is planned for September at the Marlboro Music Festival Site in Marlboro, Vt.

Arrangements are by Walker's Funeral Home, Chapel Hill.

Bill Ray Barnes

Bill Ray Barnes of Chapel Hill died Aug. 23, 2005 at his residence. He was 58.

Survivors include a son, Chad R. Barnes of Chapel Hill; two sisters, Rosemary Cobb of Spartanburg, S.C., and Dorocus Hatley of Belmont, S.C.

Arrangements are by Walker’s Funeral Home.

William S. Bischoff

William S. Bischoff of Tallahassee, Fla., died Aug. 22, 2005. He was 55.

Born at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, he moved to Tallahassee in 1984. He was a graduate of UNC and the law school of Mercer University in Macon, Ga. He was a member of the Florida, Georgia and American bar associations and maintained an extra-class license as a ham-radio operator.

A service was conducted Aug. 26 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Tallahassee.

Survivors include his wife, Christian Bischoff; children, Jason and Jennifer Bischoff, both of Tallahassee; parents, Elizabeth and Joseph Bischoff of Chapel Hill; and a brother James Bischoff of California.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1304 E. Sixth Ave., Tallahassee, Fla. 32803; or Loon County Humane Society, 413 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Fla. 32312.

Martin M. Stumpf

Martin Mathis Stumpf died unexpectedly on Aug. 18, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, N.Y. He was 42.

Born in Chicago, he grew up in Chapel Hill, with dual U.S. and German citizenship. He was a 1981 graduate of Chapel Hill High School and then received a bachelor’s from UNC in 1985. In 2004, he received a master’s in digital media from the International School of New Media at the University of Luebeck, Germany.

He had more than 13 years experience as a sound engineer in music, radio and film. After two years as a radio engineer at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, he spent most of 2002 in the Democratic Republic of Congo with the U.N. peacekeeping mission MONUC to help establish Radio Okapi, a network of new stations that radio-phonically unified the war-torn country and continues to broadcast in the name of peace.

A celebration of his life is planned.

Survivors include his parents, Walter Erich Stumpf and Ursula Emily Stumpf of Chapel Hill; and three sisters, Andrea Emily Stumpf of Washington, D.C., Silva Gabriele Stumpf of Chapel Hill, and Caroline Anne Stumpf Lloyd of Charlotte.

A memorial fund is being established. Contributions in the form of checks can be made to “Martin M. Stumpf Foundation for the Promotion of Omani-Zanzibari Cultural Ties” and sent to P.O. Box 4441, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27515-4441.
