William Bakewell Jr.

Dr. William E. Bakewell Jr. died Sept. 10, 2005.

A funeral will be held at 3 p.m Sept. 22 at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Hillsborough.

Robert Moats Miller

Robert Moats Miller died Sept. 19, 2005 at North Carolina Memorial Hospital with his wife and three children at his bedside. He was 80.

A native of Evanston, Ill., he grew up in Wilmette, Ill. and attended New Trier High School in nearby Winnetka. As an undergraduate, he was educated at Grinnell College in Iowa and at Oberlin College in Ohio. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a lieutenant in the United States Marines.

After the war, he resumed studies at Northwestern University in Evanston and in 1950 married Carol Herter. In 1955 he was awarded a doctorate in American History. Prior to completion of his dissertation, he assumed a position on the faculty of the University of Texas at El Paso where he taught from 1951 to 1956.

In the fall of 1956 he joined the faculty of the history department of UNC-Chapel Hill and remained with the department until his retirement in 1991. During his career at Chapel Hill, Dr. Miller authored numerous articles and four books and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to teach at the University of Hong Kong in 1968-69.

He enjoyed sports, bridge, gardening and fishing, and, particularly after his retirement, was able to travel with his wife to Europe, South America and throughout the United States.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 21 at the Chapel of the Cross.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years; brother, John, of Wilmette, Ill.; sister, Mary June Burd, of Jefferson, Md.; three children, David Wood Miller of Davis, Calif.; Abigail Gourley of Leawood, Kan.; and Amanda Miller Tsering of Cologne, Germany; and four grandchildren.

Eric Stitt Pfefferkorn

Eric Stitt Pfefferkorn of Chapel Hill died Sept. 15, 2005 at the Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro. He was 89.

A native of San Diego, Calif., he graduated from San Diego State, where he ran track as a sprinter and hurdler and was a championship swimmer. An avid golfer, he recorded two holes-in-one, and on two occasions shot his age, at 78 and 79. He loved the water, and spent as much time as possible sailing or body surfing. He had a life-long passion for gardening, which he shared with his wife Lyn. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he earned the Navy's second-highest commendation, the Silver Star, for his bravery and valor in the battle at Iwo Jima. He spent 45 years employed by Standard Oil of California (now Chevron), retiring as the Director of Sales and Marketing for the company's East Coast Operations.

Eric's generosity included offering his remains to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Medical School for anatomical research.

A service to celebrate his life was conducted by the Rev. Haywood Holderness Sept. 20 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Durham.

Survivors include his wife, Lyn Rupp Pfefferkorn; sons, Robert O. Pfefferkorn of Annapolis, Md. and Rogan Pfefferkorn of Houston, Texas; stepsons, David Rupp of Lucas, Texas and Michael Rupp of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Judy C. Mann

Judy Carol Seagroves Mann of Siler City died Oct. 18, 2005 at her home after a period of declining health. She was 61.

A native of Chatham County, she retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, where she worked in subscriber services. She was an avid crafter and loved making quilts for her family. She was a collector of Indian baskets and also enjoyed making baskets.

A service to celebrate her life was conducted Oct. 21 by the Rev. Richard Farmer at Merritt's Chapel United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Olive Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Chad Mann of Pittsboro and Johnny Mann of Chapel Hill; two sisters, Linda Phillips of Bear Creek and Jean Fish of Chatham County; a brother, Julius W. "J.W." Seagroves of Chatham County; and two grandchildren.

John Riebel

John Riebel of Chapel Hill died Sept. 8, 2005. He was 88.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Oct. 23 at Community Church, 106 Purefoy Lane. Family and friends will spread his ashes at the Memorial Rock behind the church at 2 p.m.

Robert John Boening

Rob Boening of Durham died Oct. 31, 2005 of leukemia. He was 51.

A native of Galveston, Texas, he graduated from the University of Texas in Austin. He spent more than 30 years in the nonprofit, continuing-care retirement community industry. He was executive director of Carolina Meadows for the past 17 years.

Over his career, he served on many boards and committees for the Texas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, and the N.C. Association of Nonprofit Homes for the Aging. He was an evaluator for the CCRC Accreditation Teams, was president of the board of Chatham County Hospice, volunteered at St. Thomas More School, at the homeless shelter, Meals on Wheels and many other charitable organizations.

The family will receive friends Nov. 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home, Chapel Hill. A mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Nov. 3 at St. Thomas More Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Beth Boening of the home; children, Lauren, Sarah and Jack Boening; a step-son, Ryan Dulude of Durham; a sister, Kathleen Boening Janca of Shreveport, La.; and a brother, Bill Boening of Houston, Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Family House at UNC, P.O. Box 16606, Chapel Hill N.C. 27516-6606.

Donald K. McIntyre

Donald Kenneth McIntyre of Chapel Hill died Oct. 28, 2005. He was 93.

A native of Mount Vernon, N.Y., he attended Dickinson College and Hahnemann Medical School. He was an Army medical officer during both World War II and the Korean War and was a general medical practitioner for 10 years in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. In 1959 he joined the Medical Division of the U.S. Department of State where, as a Foreign Service officer, he practiced in 52 countries. From 1972-1977 he was a family practitioner with UNC-Chapel Hill's Student Health Service.

Reflecting his love of travel, he worked for 12 years on short-term assignments with the American Indian Health Service, the National Health Service, and Clinical Research International, before fully retiring in 1989. He was a member of the University Presbyterian Church and a past president of the Chapel Hill Golden K Kiwanis Club.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Nov. 6 at University Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie, of the home; three daughters, Cathie McIntyre of Durham, Lynn Riley of Houston, Texas, and Susan McIntyre of Cary; two sisters, Gladys Decker and Isobel Bryant; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church, the Golden K Kiwanis Club, or the Salvation Army.

Mark Ross

Mark E. Ross of Chapel Hill died Oct. 28, 2005 while visiting family in Youngstown, Ohio. He was 58.

A native of Youngstown, he was a computer project manager with IBM and attended St. Thomas More Church in Chapel Hill. He received a bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University and a master's from Ohio State University. He was an avid coin collector and loved jogging.

A prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Nov. 3 at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Nov. 3 at St. Christine Church in Youngstown.

Survivors include a brother, John Ross of Austintown, Ohio; and a sister, Nancy Ferrante of Warren, Ohio.

Leonora Hornblow

Leonora Hornblow of Fearrington Village died Nov. 5, 2005. She was 85.

A native of New York City, she was the stepdaughter and heiress of tobacco magnate Leon Schinasi. At the age of 18 she met and married actor Wayne Morris, the father of her only son, Michael. In 1945, she married Arthur Hornblow, Jr., producer of such films as "Witness for the Prosecution," at the New York home of their mutual friend, the publisher Bennett Cerf. Her husband, 22 years her senior, adopted her son and introduced her to Hollywood, where she became friends with such well-known personalities as Ronald and Nancy Reagan and Frank Sinatra.

Hornblow turned her understanding of the Hollywood crowd into her first novel, "Memory and Desire," in 1950; then wrote about the East Coast crowd in "The Love Seekers" in 1957. She later turned to writing children's books, including a series of five books about the odd traits of various animals, from "Birds Do the Strangest Things" in 1965 through "Prehistoric Monsters Did the Strangest Things" in 1974.

She moved to North Carolina two years ago to be near her son and his family.

Survivors include her son, Michael, and three step-grandchildren.

Sandy Marks Sr.

Sandy Cole Marks Sr., died Nov. 8, 2005, days short of his 95th birthday.

A native of Apex, he graduated from Acme Delco High School and attended Davidson College for two years before attending Atlanta Southern Dental College. Following his graduation from dental school in 1933, he returned to Wilmington, where he opened a dental practice. In 1936, he married Katherine (Kitty) Stuart Woods, a registered nurse. They had three children and in 1948 went to the Belgian Congo as missionaries with the American Presbyterian Congo Mission. After returning from the Congo in 1961, he entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a master's degree in pedodontics. After two years on the staff at Howard University, he taught at the UNC School of Dentistry until his retirement in 1976.

In retirement, he became more involved with the Medical

Benevolence Foundation and the opening of a post-graduate clinic for training dental graduates in Zaire (former Belgian Congo). In 1997, in recognition of his life achievements, he was inducted into the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller as a Knight of Merit.

A graveside service was held Nov. 12 in Oakdale cemetery, Wilmington.

Survivors include a son, Stuart Marks; daughter, Katie Sawyer; sisters, "Gee" Myers and Louise

Slack; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Donnie Moore

Donnie Harris Moore died Nov. 10, 2005 at The Hospice of the Meadow Lane in Hillsborough. He was 58.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Haw River Baptist Church in Chatham County. Visitation will begin at 1:30.

James Moos

James Doster Moos of Chapel Hill died Nov. 9, 2005 at UNC Hospitals. He was 82.

He was a veteran of World War II and a prisoner of war in 1943. He served as a director with Playmakers Theatre.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Moos of the home; sons, Ron Moos of Birmingham, Ala. and Gary Moos of Safety Harbor, Fla.; daughter, Melissa Doeberl of Chapel Hill; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Frances Waggoner

Frances G. Waggoner of Chapel Hill died Nov. 9, 2005 in Alterra Wynwood Assisted Living. She was 92.

A native of Galt, Ontario, Canada, she grew up on the family farm and moved to Buffalo in 1940 to marry Carlton C. Waggoner. She was a social studies teacher at Amherst Central Junior High School for 18 years before moving to Chapel Hill in 1976.

Survivors include a brother, James E. McQueen of Oshawa, Ont.; sons, Carlton Waggoner of Chapel Hill and John Waggoner of Washington, D.C.; daughters, Margaret Rindfuss of Chapel Hill and Kathryn Kalcic of Plano, Texas; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Beekman

Robert Wilson Beekman died Nov. 11, 2005 in Asheville. He was 87.

A member of the 45th Fighter Squadron, Army Air Corps, he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Retiring at age 62, he lived 25 years in central and south Florida, playing golf and enjoying life.

A private memorial and celebration of his life will be held in Asheville in December.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Delight; daughters, Joyce Beekman of Carrboro and Janna Beekman-Forst of Asheville; and one granddaughter.

Buck Blackwood

D.A. (Buck) Blackwood died in his Chapel Hill home Nov. 13, 2005 following an extended illness. He was 79.

A native of Orange County, he was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

A celebration of his life was held Thursday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with Dr. Dennis Hill and the Rev. Ned Thorpe officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Jewell Merritt Blackwood; sons, Geary Blackwood and Charles Blackwood, both of Chapel Hill; sisters, Nan Phillips of Greensboro and Lucy Jefferson of Chapel Hill; brother, Kenon Blackwood of Chapel Hill; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Carmel

Church cemetery Improvement Fund.
