Martha Cheek
Martha LaGrande Cheek died Nov. 15, 2005 at UNC-Hospitals. She was 62.
A life-long resident of Carrboro, she was the daughter of the late Walter Bunnie Riggsbee and Maude Riggsbee.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Hillsong Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Patterson and the Rev. Jim Greenlee officiating. Burial will follow in Westwood cemetery. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. at the church.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Leonard Cheek; son, Stephen Cheek of Bangkok, Thailand; sisters, Joan Carroll of Carrboro and Ann Craddock of Raleigh; and brother, Claiborne Riggsbee of Hillsborough.

Colette Martin
Colette P. Martin of Hillsborough died at home unexpectedly on Nov. 16, 2005. She was 52.
A native of Lowell, Mass., she attended Sandia High School and lived much of her adult life in Albuquerque, N.M., until moving to North Carolina in 1998. She worked for six years at Sports Endeavors as assistant shipping manager. Besides taking care of a blended family, she loved working around horses, working in the yard and was a “Jill of all trades.”
A casual gathering of friends and neighbors was held at 1 p.m. Saturday. An organ donor, Walker’s Funeral Home, Hillsborough will handle arrangements. Interment will be in Albuquerque.
Survivors include her sons, Christopher Martin and Ryan Martin; and long-time companion, Keitha Barrett of Hillsborough.
Memorial donations may be made in the care of Sports Endeavors, Inc. to be given to the Human Rights Campaign.
Harold R. Murdock
The memorial service for Harold R. Murdock, who died July 9, 2005, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Carolina Meadows auditorium. His entire family will be present, including Hart missionaries from Bolivia, South America.
Stephen W. Sharp
Stephen Wardell Sharp of Pittsboro died Nov. 14, 2005 at home in the loving care of family and friends from the complications of colon cancer. He was 45.
He served his country and community. He worked for the USDA, Soil and Conservation Service from 1979 to1981 then enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps and Reserve from 1981 to 1991. In May 1989, he received his Agriculture Engineering degree from A&T State University in Greensboro, where he pledged with his brothers of Alpha Phi Omega. From 1990 to 1996 he held several positions with the N.C. Department of Transportation utilizing his engineering skills. He was the Streets Supervisor for the Town of Chapel Hill from 1996 to 1999 and then for a short time was Streets Superintendent for the City of Durham. The past few years he worked for North Carolina Emergency Management as site and construction engineer for the division of Temporary Housing helping hurricane victims.
A memorial service was held Saturday at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his devoted and faithful caregiver, Lisa Baaske; a daughter, Stephanie Sharp; former wife, Velma Sharp; four brothers, Quintin, Donald, Eric and Ronald Sharp; sister, Tamira Ortiz; mother, Frances Sharp; and grandmother, Jeanette Moore.

John Weaver Jr.
John Weaver Jr. of Chapel Hill died Oct. 9, 2005 at his home. He was 78.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 26 at the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4707 Garrett Road, Durham. The Rev. Mary Grigolia will officiate.
Survivors include sisters, Jean Smith of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Joan Bright of Vista, Calif.; brother, Thomas Weaver of Commerce Township, Mich.; sons, Gary Weaver of Chapel Hill and Steven Weaver of Rockville, Md.; four grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
Phyllis Fearrington
Phyllis Fearrington of Chapel Hill died Nov. 21, 2005. She was 65.
She was a member of numerous community and philanthropic organizations.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Nov. 25 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. The Rev. George Walls will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 24 at the church, when Eastern Star and other organizational rites will be held.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis L. Fearrington; a sister, Delois Harding of Winston-Salem; and one granddaughter.

Richard J. Finneran
Richard J. Finneran of St. Louis, Mo., died Nov. 17, 2005.
A scholar of Anglo-Irish literature and editor of numerous volumes of the works of W.B. Yeats, he held the Hodges Chair of Excellence at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
A memorial service will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 26 at Bucholz Mortuary West in Chesterfield, Mo.
Survivors include a son, Richard E. Finneran; a daughter, Catherine A. Finneran of Chapel Hill; and a brother, Edward Finneran of White Plains, N.Y.
Joan E. McGowan
Joan E. McGowan died Nov. 20, 2005 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington. She was 74.
In 1987, she moved to North Carolina from New York and was an executive secretary for Pepsi Cola Co. She was a member of the Newman Catholic Center at UNC-Chapel Hill.
A funeral will be conducted at 9 a.m. Nov. 25 at the Newman Catholic Center by the Rev. Phillip Leach. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Brian McGowan of Wilmington and Kevin McGowan of Lake Ariel, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

Patrick H. Winston Jr.
Patrick Henry Winston Jr. died Nov. 20, 2005 at Delmar Gardens Nursing home in Lawrenceville, Ga. He was 83.
A native of Chapel Hill, he graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1938 and received a business degree from the University of North Carolina in 1942. He was a long-time real estate agent in Greensboro.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Nov. 26 at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.
Survivors include his wife, Janette; two daughters, Phyllis J. Ringler of Baltimore, Md., and Susan Presse of Bethlehem, Ga.; and nephew, Barry Winston of Chapel Hill.
Arrangements were made through Forbis and Dick Funeral Home in Greensboro.
Robert Beekman
Robert Wilson Beekman died Nov. 11, 2005 in Asheville. He was 87.
A member of the 45th Fighter Squadron, Army Air Corps, he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Retiring at age 62, he lived 25 years in central and south Florida, playing golf and enjoying life.
A private memorial and celebration of his life will be held in Asheville in December.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Delight; daughters, Joyce Beekman of Carrboro and Janna Beekman-Forst of Asheville; and one granddaughter.
Buck Blackwood
D.A. (Buck) Blackwood died in his Chapel Hill home Nov. 13, 2005 following an extended illness. He was 79.
A native of Orange County, he was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
A celebration of his life was held Thursday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with Dr. Dennis Hill and the Rev. Ned Thorpe officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell Merritt Blackwood; sons, Geary Blackwood and Charles Blackwood, both of Chapel Hill; sisters, Nan Phillips of Greensboro and Lucy Jefferson of Chapel Hill; brother, Kenon Blackwood of Chapel Hill; and three grandchildren.

Patrick Hobson Jr.
Patrick Henry Hobson Jr. died Nov. 18, 2005. He was 84.
He was born in Anderson, S.C., and graduated from Davidson College cum laude Phi Beta Kappa in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was discharged as a major in 1945. He received a doctorate in chemistry in 1949 from UNC.
He was a research chemist for American Viscose/ Chemstrand in Decatur, Ala., from 1949 to 1961. He moved to Chapel Hill in 1961 and became a manager at Chemstrand/Monsanto in Research Triangle Park. In 1976, he moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he continued to work for Monsanto until his retirement in 1982. He retired to Chapel Hill.
He was a founding member of the Church of Reconciliation and served as elder and clerk of session. He was an active member of the Choral Society of Durham for more than 25 years. He was a trustee of Davidson College and charter member of the Chapel Hill Tennis Club.
A memorial service will be conducted Dec. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Reconciliation, 110 N. Elliott Road, Chapel Hill.
Survivors include three sons, Henry Hobson of Sparta, Edwin Hobson of Chapel Hill and Kenneth Hobson of Norman, Okla.; a daughter, Shirley Colpitts of Durham; two sisters, Carolyn Cartwright of Moab, Utah, and Louise Callaghan of Charlotte; two brothers, Fred Hobson of Charlotte and Dick Hobson of Black Mountain; and five grandchildren.
The family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the N.C. Botanical Garden. Please indicate that the gift is for the Mason Farm Endowment in memory of Patrick Hobson.
