Renetta Jane Keys

Renetta Jane Keys died Nov. 23, 2005 at UNC Hospitals from complications from triple by-pass heart surgery.

She was born in North Tonawanda, N.Y., and was a homemaker. Private memorial services and burial are planned.

Survivors include her husband, Loren D. Keys Jr.; three sons Loren "Dick" Keys of Scituate, Mass., Thomas S. Keys of Mechanicsville, Va., and William J. Keys of Middlebury, Conn.; and nine grandchildren.

Thomas E. Sullivan

Thomas E. Sullivan of Pittsboro died at his home under hospice care on Nov. 22, 2005 at age 84.

He was born in Worcester, Mass., and graduated from the College of Holy Cross in 1943. A veteran of World War II, he served in India, Burma and China.

After the war, he graduated from the School of Library Service at Columbia University in 1947 and worked at the Sterling Library of Yale University and received a master's in philosophy from the Catholic University of America. He worked at the Library of Congress and was appointed chief of the Catalog Department of John Crerar Library in Chicago. In 1961, he joined the H.W. Wilson Company in the Bronx, N.Y., from which he retired in 1987 as associate director of Indexing Services.

A memorial service will be conducted Nov. 29 at 4 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Family in Chapel Hill.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Bunker Sullivan; a daughter, Kathleen Rebecca Sullivan of Cambridge, Mass.

Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

Irving J. Ansfield

Irving Joseph Ansfield died in his home at The Forest at Duke in Durham on Dec. 6, 2005. He was 87.

A longtime resident of Milwaukee, Wis., he had lived in North Carolina the past year. He practiced medicine for more than 50 years (obstetrics and gynecology). He served as a member and president of the State Board of Health in Madison, Wis., and was a volunteer for the American Osteopathic Association. He practiced medicine until the age of 85.

A private ceremony was held in Milwaukee.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey; children, Michael Ansfield of Colorado, Bobbi Ansfield Marks of Chapel Hill, Alice Ansfield of California and Amy Ansfield Scott of California; and five grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Project Compassion, 180 Providence Road, Suite 1-C, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514.

Arrangements are by Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

Roger Alex Barth

Roger Alex Barth of Siler City died Dec. 8, 2005. He was 50.

A native of Chatham County, he was a carpenter.

A funeral was held Dec. 12 at First Wesleyan Church, Siler City.

Survivors include his wife, Arleen Olson Barth; four daughters, Heather B. Rivera of Fort Hood, Texas, Jennifer B. Sweet of Mount Pleasant, Texas, Holly Barth and Haven Barth, both of the home; his parents, Vernon and Virginia Cockman Barth of Siler City; two brothers, Michael Barth of Carrboro and Terry Barth of Siler City; a sister, Brenda B. Walters of Bear Creek; two step-daughters, Jacquline Wilson of Warrenburg, Mo., and Danielle Pender of Siler City; five grandchildren and two step-granddaughters.

Daisy Edmister

Daisy Elizabeth Moore Edmister of Chapel Hill died Dec. 10, 2005 after a massive stroke. She was 86.

A native of New Bern, she worked in the utility division at UNC as a bookkeeper for more than 30 years. She was Chapel Hill's mother of the year in 1966.

A private celebration of her life is planned for family and close friends.

Survivors include two sons, Russell S. Edmister and Gregory C. Edmister; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Daisy M. Edmister Scholarship Fund at UNC-Chapel Hill, P.O. Box 309, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599.

Arrangements are by Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

Sam W. Hitt

Sam William Hitt of Chapel Hill died at home Dec. 11, 2005. He was 84.

A native of Prescott, Ark, he grew up in Little Rock. He served in the Pacific campaign of World War II. After the war, he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1948 and a master's degree in library science from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.

In 1976, he became director of the Health Sciences library at UNC.

He was president of the Medical Library Association from 1974 to 1975, received the Marcia Noyes Award from the Medical Library Association in 1982 "for outstanding contributions to health sciences librarianship" and was nationally known as a consultant on library design.

No service is planned.

Survivors include his four children, Chris Hitt and Maria Hitt of Chapel Hill, Alex Hitt of Graham and Jon Hitt of Columbia, Mo.; a brother, Thomas Hitt of Little Rock, Ark.; and a sister, Lou Jane Schriver of Lompoc, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the N.C. Botanical Garden, Totten Center, CB#3375, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-3375 or, to the Sam and Harriett Hitt Library Fund of the UNC-Health Sciences Library, CB# 7585 Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-7585. Please indicate that the gift is in memory of Sam Hitt.

Natalie B. Moore

Natalie Bayless Moore died peacefully Dec. 11, 2005. She was 84.

A native of Seattle, Wash., she grew up outside of Baltimore and graduated from Vassar College. She received a doctorate in invertebrate zoology from UNC. She lived in Chapel Hill for more than 40 years. Her varied interests included art, gardening, the outdoors and her pets.

Survivors include her children, John Reid Moore, Marjorie Moore Kastrinsky and Stephen Wilson Moore; a sister, Anne P. Blakistone; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to National Alliance on Mental Illness, N.C. (NAMI), 309 W. Millbrook Road, Suite 121, Raleigh, N.C., 27609.

Arrangements are by Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

William Straughn Jr.

William Ringgold Straughn Jr. died Dec. 8, 2005 at the Carolina Meadows Health Center after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. He was 92.

A native of DuBois, Pa., he graduated with a bachelor's degree from Mansfield State Teachers College, a master's from Cornell University and a doctorate in medical microbiology from the University of Pennsylvania. He taught and did research at UNC in the department of bacteriology from 1944 to 1976. He was the director of admissions for the UNC School of Medicine from 1968 until his retirement in 1976. As a professor emeritus, he continued to teach part-time until his full retirement in 1983.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 21 at University Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Harfst Straughn; four children, William R. Straughn III of Manchester, N.H., Arthur B. Straughn of Memphis, Tenn., Dorothy Beveridge of Caye Caulker, Belize, and Charles B. Straughn of Chapel Hill; four step-children, Richard Harfst of Mathews, Va., Dabney Narvaez of Edenton, Martha Crowdes of Bivalve, Md., and David Harfst of Brussels, Belgium; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Inter-Faith Council, 110 W. Main St., Carrboro, N.C. 27510.

Harold Langenderfer

Harold Langenderfer died Jan. 6, 2006 at the Dubose Health Center in Chapel Hill of complications from lymphoma. He was 80.

A native of Swanton, Ohio, he graduated from the University of Miami, Ohio and received a master's degree from Northwestern University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 in the U.S. and Okinawa, Japan.

After receiving a doctorate from Indiana University in 1953, he accepted a post at the UNC School of Business, where he continued for 40 years, rising to full professor as the KPMG Chaired Professor of Accounting. He retired in 1993.

He served as president of the American Accounting Association and the N.C. Association of CPAs. He also served on the State Board of CPA Examiners and Board of Fraud Examiners. In 1988, he received the Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award, a national recognition of excellence in teaching and prominence in the accounting profession.

He published numerous articles in accounting and ethics journals and was the author of several textbooks widely used by colleges and universities throughout the U.S.

He was an active member and former president of the Chapel Hill Kiwanis Club.

A memorial service was held Jan. 9 at St. Thomas More Church.

Survivors include his wife, Joan; a daughter, Amy; three sons, Tom, Jeff and Chris; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Reynolds-Langenderfer Scholarship Fund at the Kenan-Flagler Business School, CB3490 McColl Building, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599; St. Thomas More Church; or UNC Hospice.

Edgar John Tackett

Edgar John Tackett of Chapel Hill died Jan. 9, 2006 at his home from complications of cancer. He was 57.

A native of Floyd County, Ky., he was an employee in a local coal mine before moving to Chapel Hill, where he worked for Rice's Glass Company for 30 years.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 11 at Walker's Funeral Home. A funeral officiated by the Rev. Troy Little will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 12 at Walker's.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Hill Tackett of the home; eight children, Chris Knight of Timberlake, Jimmy Knight of Chapel Hill, Charlie Lester, Cheryl Lester and Kayla Knight, all of Chapel Hill, Lori Knight of Efland, Tonya Frazier of Liberty, Mo., and Patricia Tackett of Hillsborough; two sisters, Barbara Hall and Alphie Tackett, both of Kentucky; three brothers, Rex Tackett of Temple, Ga., and Carl Tackett and Bert Tackett, both of Hillsborough; and 12 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions for funeral expenses may be made to Chris and Jimmy Knight, 174 Hunters Edge Drive, Timberlake, N.C. 27583.

James G. Edwards

James Garfield Edwards of Carrboro died Jan. 7, 2006. He was 73.

He was born in Chapel Hill and graduated from Orange Training School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and worked for the Veteran's Administration Hospital for 35 years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. Paul AME Zion Church and a member of the Pride of Orange 276 Elk's Lodge in Chapel Hill.

A funeral service will be conducted Jan. 12 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul AME Zion Church by the Rev. Thomas Nixon.

Survivors include his wife, Ernestine Edwards of Carrboro; two sons, James S. Edwards of Mebane and Elliott W. Edwards of Durham; and a daughter, Chandra J. Edwards of Carrboro.

Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home of Chapel Hill.

Inez M. Abbenante

Inez Maria Abbenante of Aiken, S.C., died Jan. 11, 2006 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. She was 92.

A native of Flushing Queens, N.Y., she lived in Chapel Hill for 28 years before moving to Aiken in 1998. While in Chapel Hill, she volunteered at UNC Hospitals and at Charles House.

Funeral services were held Jan. 14 at George Funeral Home in Aiken. Interment will take place at Gate of Heaven cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.

Survivors include a son, Rick Bozzone of Aiken; a daughter, Carole Selkirk of Chapel Hill; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave. 6th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10001.

Dorothy R. Beal

Dorothy Ray Beal of Chapel Hill died Jan. 11, 2006 at the City of Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center in Raleigh. She was 84.

She was a retired ward secretary at UNC Hospitals and was a member of the former Carrboro Baptist Church.

A graveside service was conducted Jan. 13 at Westwood cemetery in Carrboro by the Rev. David Woodhouse.

Survivors include a son, Charles Beal of Raleigh; two daughters, Claudia Hester and Martha Waldrup; a sister, Phyliss Bradford of Garner; a brother, Brantley Ray of Georgia; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Walker's Funeral Home.
