Nellie W. Rhinehart
Buncombe County native
CANTON — Nellie Wilson Rhinehart, 94, formerly of the Dutch Cove community, Canton, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at Pisgah Manor Nursing Home.
A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late George Russell and Lulu Taylor Wilson. She was one of the oldest living members of Dutch Cove Baptist Church, having served as Sunday school teacher more than 50 years. She was a homemaker and an active participant in the Senior Olympics, having received numerous awards. She was a volunteer with the Veterans Administration Hospital, the Canton Senior Center and Meals on Wheels.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Sewell Rhinehart; two sons, Earl and Bill Rhinehart; one daughter, Martha Sue Rhinehart; and one grandson, Rick Thomas.
Surviving are two daughters, Irene Livingstone of Atlantis, Fla., and Dorothy Jean Dockery of Lexington, S.C.; three sons, Ray Rhinehart of Clyde, Russell Rhinehart of Candler and Tony Rhinehart of Canton; one sister, Dorothy Coble, of Spartanburg, S.C.; brother, Walter Wilson, of Candler; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 29 at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. The Revs. Ed Lowder and Roy Houston officiated. The eulogy was given by Tony Rhinehart. Burial was in Ridgeway Baptist Church cemetery.
The family received friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Lena B. Roland
Jackson County native
CANTON — Lena Mae Bryson Roland, 88, of Silver Bluff Drive, Canton, formerly of Newdale community in Burnsville, died Friday, July 26, 2002.
A native of Jackson County, had lived most of her life in Burnsville. She had resided in Haywood County since 1986. She was a daughter of the late Robert and Sarah Wykle Bryson. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Spruce Pine.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Alvin Roland, who died in 1982; and by a grandson, Danny Joe Robinson, who died in 2000.
Surviving are one daughter, Gladys Robinson of Clyde; four sisters, Jessie Cagle of Hendersonville, Thelma Fisher of Charleston, S.C., Mary Parker of Sylva and Edna Wiseman of Swannanoa; four brothers, Glenn Bryson of Georgia, Richard Bryson of Franklin, Bill Bryson of Clyde and Robert Bryson of Sylva; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. The Rev. Phillip Wyatt officiated.
The family received friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. An interment service was held at 3 p.m. Monday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church cemetery, Estatoe community in Spruce Pine.
Charles Hughes
Army veteran
CLINTON, S.C. — Charles “Charley” Hughes, 68, of 100 Fair Drive, Clinton, S.C., died Friday, July 26, 2002. at his home.
A native of Orange County, he was the son of the late Robert Dawson and Lois Wilkerson Hughes. He retired from Whitten Center. He was a member and elder of the Shady Grove Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Confederate Veterans Laurens Camp No. 40. He was an U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Joann Bonds Hughes; three sons, Chuck Hughes of Easley, Eddy Hughes of Clinton and Michael Hughes of Pasadena, MD; two sisters, Virginia Bowland of Cedar Grove, NC and Martha Horowitz of Tucson, Ariz.; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Bonds Hughes; one sister, Sarah Bronsink; and one brother, Robert D. Hughes.
Services were held Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Shady Grove Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Gray Funeral Home in Clinton.

Verlan W. Shelton
Former truck driver
Verlan Wiley Shelton, 85, of Waynesville, died July 25, 2002.
A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late Jeter Ferdia and Martha Baldwin Shelton. He was a truck driver for a saw mill for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Shelton.
Surviving are one son, Ronald W. Shelton and his wife, Marcie, of Waynesville; seven daughters, Carolyn Shuler and her husband, Winston, of Balsam, Shirley Elbertson of Millville, N.J., Linda McCarter and her husband, Robert, of Waynesville, Faye Rogers and her husband, Bill, of Waynesville, Wanda Rider of Canton, Sandra Cooper and her husband, Harold, of Waynesville, and Diane Ashe and her husband, James, of Waynesville; three brothers, Odas and Doyle Shelton, both of Kings Mountain, and Arvil Shelton of Oregon; one sister, Lois Nanny of Shelby; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Rev. Paul Carden officiated. Burial will be in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
Grandsons served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Alice D. Turner
Former teacher
SYLVA — Alice Dills Weaver Turner. 79, of Sylva, died Thursday, July 25, 2002.
She was the daughter of the late Arthur Hale Weaver and Beulah Dills Weaver. She was a graduate of Western Carolina College of Teachers and George Peabody College of Teachers. She taught in schools in Jackson, Macon and Buncombe counties and Morganton City schools. She was a N.C. Probation Officer for several years in Western North Carolina. She owned and operated Lake Toohow Campground since 1974, owned Comment-Deux kennels and raised many champion dogs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, “Bill” Dixon Turner, who died in 1974.
There are no survivors.
Private graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Parris cemetery. The Rev. Robert Clegg officiated.

Lucile B. Greer
Georgia native
Lucile L. Benton Greer of Waynesville, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Waynesville.
A native of Monticello, Ga., she was the daughter of the late James B. Benton and Lucy Cheek Benton. She was a member of the Monticello Baptist Church. She and her late husband, Patrick Henry Greer lived in Florida for a number of years where she worked in an aircraft factory during World War II. They returned to Monticello where she lived until moving to Waynesville.
Surviving are one son, Charles H. Greer of Waynesville; and six grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Liberty Hill cemetery in Hampton, Ga. The Rev. Dr. Kerry Bunn will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Jordan Funeral Home in Monticello, Ga.

Jessie M. Lime
Retired teacher
LATROBE, Pa. — Jessie M. Lime, 93 of Latrobe, Pa., formerly of Asheville and Canton, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Redstone Highlands Nursing Home in Greesburg, Penn.
A native of Whittier, she was the daughter of the late Erastus T. and Pallie Miller Moody. She was a member of the Canton Presbyterian Church in Canton where her husband of 64 years was minister for 25 years until his retirement as pastor emeritus in 1975. They moved to Latrobe in 1993. She graduated from Western Carolina University and was a school teacher at Beaverdam Elementary until her retirement in 1975.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. J. Clayton Lime, who died in 1997; a 3-year-old daughter, Margaret; one sister, Thelma Moody Gauding; and two brothers, Henry and Oscar Moody.
Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn L. Albert and her husband, Harry, of Latrobe, and Dr. Elizabeth Hadley and her husband, Phillip, of Jonesboro, Ga.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at Canton Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Beverly Brock and Riley Covin will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Canton Presbyterian Church, 190 Main St. Canton, NC 28716; or the Habitat for Humanity.

Carpenter
Leet Garnett Coley Sr., 87, of Waynesville, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Autumn Care of Waynesville.
A native of Habersham County, Ga., he was the son of the late Cleveland and Arlevy Wade Coley. He was a carpenter. He worked for Sheppard and Haywood Builders Supply for 14 years. He was a member of North Hazelwood Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Bell Myers Coley, who died in 1996; a son, Leet Garnett Coley Jr.; a daughter, Edith Imogene Coley Mintz; a brother, Columbus Coley of Arkansas; four sisters, Ester Dodd, Baney Reems, Dimey Lomax and Delia King of Georgia.
Surviving are three sons, John Coley Sr. of Asheville, Wayne Coley of Lancaster, S.C., and James Coley of Waynesville; four daughters, Edna Mullinax of Mount Airy, Ga., Frances Strickland of Clyde, Vivian Wright and Teresa Coley, both of Waynesville; two sisters, Izora Myers and Dorothy Autry, both of Alton, Ga.; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Revs. Harold Webb and Carl Chastain will officiate. Burial will be at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Coley, John Coley Jr., Harry Mintz Jr., Adam Wright, Brian Wright and Lane Strickland. Honorary pallbearer will be Reed Phillips.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Marion J. McCracken
Enka employee, veteran
Marion Jess McCracken, 92, of Waynesville, died Aug. 20, 2002 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A native of Franklin, he was the son of the late James and Lorie Bradshaw McCracken. He was textile worker at Enka and a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Faith Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Drennon McCracken; and one daughter, Joan McCracken.
Surviving is one son, Marion David McCracken of Waynesville.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Greenhill cemetery. Clayton Davis and the Rev. Terry Rowland will officiate.

Richard L. Seeber
Air Force retiree, deputy
MAGGIE VALLEY — Richard L. Seeber, 79, of Maggie Valley, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A native of Chicago, Ill., he had resided in Haywood County since 1983. He was the son of the late Joseph and Susan Durning Seeber. He attended Northwestern University in Chicago and retired in 1969 as a technical sergeant from the Air Force with 20 years of service. Afterwards, he was a deputy with Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department for 10 years. He was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Marie Seeber; one daughter, Patti Cox and her husband, Raymond, of Homestead, Fla.; one son, Dennis Seeber and his wife, Linda, of Kennesaw, Ga.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church. The Rev.Frank Doyle will officiate. Full military honors will be conducted by Shaw Air Force Base.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

CLYDE — Ronald Bruce Freeman, 63, of 52 Poulin Place, Clyde, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at his home.
A native of Richmond County, he had lived in Haywood County since 1984. He was an Air Force veteran and retired from N.C. Vocational Rehabilitation in February 2002. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Canton .
Surviving are his wife, Mary Anne Glenn Freeman; one daughter, Leslie F. Massie of Liberty; two sisters, Ann F. Yates of Randleman and Joyce Hargett of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, William H. Freeman of Burlington; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home chapel in Randleman.
