Cecil A. Putnam

SWANNANOA — Cecil Adam Putnam, 80, of 157 Edwards Ave., Swannanoa, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002.
A native of McDowell County, he was a son of the late Charles and Sue Mace Putnam and resided in Swannanoa for the past 70 years. He retired from the maintenance department of Northup Carolina and Co. He was a member of Swannanoa Free Will Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran having served during World War II and member of VFW Post 891.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Edwards Putnam, who died in 1990; and was also preceded in death by three sisters, Lillian Biggs, Lena Hollifield and Julie Putnam.
Surviving are two sons, Bill C. Putnam and wife, Teresa, of Montreat, and Bruce C. Putnam and wife, Deborah, of Marion; two daughters, Rita P. Parker and husband, Don, of Swannanoa, and Jean P. Hensley and husband, Charlie, of Asheville; one sister, Ruth Trantham of Canton; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bee Tree Baptist Church. The Revs. Larry Carver and Nelson Parker officiated. Burial was in Piney Grove cemetery.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Penland & Sons Funeral Home, Swannanoa.
Edna G. Mills
Canton resident
CANTON — Edna Gaddy Mills, 83, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
She was a daughter of the late John T. and Mary Jane Reid Gaddy, and wife of the late Jethro A. Mills.
She was preceded in death by a son, Michael A. Mills.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Rigsbee and her husband, William, of Taylors, S.C.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. The Rev. Keith Clark officiated. Burial was in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Edna W. Lindsey
Haywood County native
CLYDE — Edna Wyatt Lindsey, 72, of 38 Travis St., Clyde, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Hubert and Vinnie Ledford Wyatt. She was a beautician at Giant Dollar Hair Salon and a member of Clyde Wesleyan Church. She was a former paper carrier for The Mountaineer, serving the Bethel community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth R. Lindsey, who died in January 2002; two brothers, Sanford and Charles Wyatt; and a sister, Marie Gibson.
Surviving are one son, John Carroll Lindsey and his wife, Priscilla, of McAlpin, Fla.; two sisters, Clara Greene and Ruth Eager, both of Clyde; two brothers, Johnny Wyatt of Coatsville, Pa., and Robert Wyatt of Spartanburg, S.C.; two grandchildren, Kimberly Jones and Marty Lindsey; and four great-grandchildren, Kendra, Alyssia and Brooke Lindsey and Aaron Jones.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. Burial was in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family was at the home.

Betty L. Joy
Indiana native
Betty L. Joy, 84, formerly of Sandsridge Way, Waynesville, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at the Brian Center.
A native of Marion, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Mathew W. and Hazel Hume Lowder. She was a member of the Craft Guilders Association and Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Janice K. Joy and Judy Mongero Joy, both of Waynesville; two brothers, James N. Lowder and and Jack H. Lowder, both of Ocala, Fla.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be held at a later date.

Evelyn R. Freeman
Clay County native
Evelyn Carrie Reece Freeman, 81, of 404 Shovel Creek Road, Waynesville, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at her home.
A native of Clay County, she lived most of her life in Haywood County. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Eva Dye Reece. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, R.O. Chambers; and her second husband, Ezra Freeman.
Surviving are two sons, Carroll and Rex Chambers and his wife, Sandra, both of Waynesville; a stepson, Robert Freeman of California; four sisters, Ellen Henson, Edna Chambers, Stella Owens and Eva Mae Burris, all of Canton; two brothers, Roe and Algie Reece, both of Waynesville; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church. The Revs. Dr. Roy Kilby and G.W. Jameson officiated. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ray Chambers, Ricky Thompson, Dewayne Reece, Roger Burress, Mark Chambers, Danny Green and Wade Reece.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. At other times, the family was at the home.

F. Bruce Owen
Teacher, veteran
CANTON — Franklin Bruce Owen, of Canton, formerly of Norfolk, Va., died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.
He was a native of Haywood County but lived in Norfolk, Va., for more than 50 years. He was a son of the late R. Joyce and Gussie Robinson Owen. He graduated from Canton High School and obtained a law degree and a master’s degree in education. He taught in the Norfolk Public School system for 20 years. He retired from the Navy with the rank of chief warrant officer after 33 years of service. He served in World War II as a fighter pilot. He also was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was commissioned on the USS Bunker Hill and the USS Forrestall. He was a lifelong member of the Retired Officer Association, was a commercial aircraft pilot and a past member of the aircraft pilot and owner’s association.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred J. Owen, who died April 17, 2002; and two brothers, Bill and Earl Owen.
Surviving are three sisters, Nancy Ford of Canton, Violet Bramlett of Clyde and Joyce Cathey of Tulsa, Okla.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Plains United Methodist Church cemetery in Canton. The Rev. Bruce Cayton will officiate. military honors will be held.
The family received friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. At other times, the family was at the home of Frank and Nancy Ford, 50 Ford Hollow, Canton, NC 28716.

Delphia L. Collette

CANTON — Delphia Lewis Collette, 81, formerly of Gilbert Street, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.
She was a daughter of the late Z.V. and Callie Burnette Lewis and the wife of the late Rufus Wallace Collette, who died in 1985.
Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Stalcup and her husband, “Butch,” of Morganton; a son, Joe Bob Collette and his wife, Wendy, of Maggie Valley; a sister, Marie Laws of Canton; a brother, Johnny Lewis of Gainesville, Ga.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. The Rev. Milton Hollifield officiated. Burial was in Morning Star United Methodist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Johney S. Strong
Southern Bell employee, veteran
COCOA, FLA. — Johney Saxon Strong, 85, of Cocoa, Fla., and Haywood County, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at his home.
He served in the 8th Air Force in the European Theatre during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He worked for Southern Bell Telephone Co. for 45 years. He was a member of the Fellowship of Riverside Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his son, Johney Frank Strong.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Frances Smyer Strong; one sister, Orthelia Strong Jones of Michigan; two daughters, Vivian Strong Klebs and husband, Dr. Bradley W. Klebs of Seattle, Wash., and Nancy Strong Taylor and husband, James H. Taylor of Wellford, S.C.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Cocoa. Burial will be at Glen Haven Memorial Park, Winter Park, Fla. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home in Rockledge.

Mary R. Williams
Former CIA employee
LAKE JUNALUSKA — Mary Rathbone Williams, 90, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at Haywood Retirement Center.
A native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel D. and Nancy Rathbone. She was a federal employee and worked for the CIA. She was a member of Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Wesley Sunday School Class. She was a NARFE member. She was a former teacher. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Goble, Dallas, David and Jack Rathbone; and three sisters, Flora Ballinger, Georgia Lines and Sarah Higgins.
Surviving is one sister, Anna Dee Moody of Lake Junaluska.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rob Fuquay and Woody Adams will officiate. Entombment will be at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church.

CLYDE — William Thomas “Tom” Snyder, 68, of Snyder Farm Road, Clyde, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at his home.
A native of Fort Walton, Fla., he was the son of the late Jesse T. and Verba Shell Snyder. He was a retired teacher from the Haywood County School System.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pat Snyder, who died in 1992.
Surviving are his wife, Charlene Duckett Snyder; a son, Bill Snyder and his wife, Beth, of Clyde; a daughter, Dianne Hilderbrand of Greer, S.C.; a stepson, Greg Earley of Canton; stepdaughter, Melanie Blankenship of Waynesville; five grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Clyde Central United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. The family received friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

TAYLORS, S.C. — Heidi Miller Alexander, 37, of 4 Woodleigh Drive, Taylors, S.C., died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002.
A native of Waynesville, she was the daughter of Jennie Fay Miller of Waynesville and the late Hayden E. Miller. She graduated from Tuscola High School and received a nursing degree in December 2000 from University of South Carolina in Spartanburg. She was an employee of Bausch and Lomb of Greenville, S.C., for many years. She was a member of Lee Road Baptist Church in Taylors, S.C. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, David L. and Bertha Free Putnam.
Surviving in addition to her mother, are her husband, Raymond L. Alexander of the home; a sister, Kathryn Miller of Piedmont, S.C.; and four aunts, all of Waynesville.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. Burial followed in Greenhill cemetery.
