Virginia S. Clontz

CANTON — Virginia S. Clontz, 80, died Sunday, August 3, 2003, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home in Canton. A native of Hopewell, Va., she had lived most of her life in Haywood County. She was a daughter of the late Harve and Minnie Myers Shepard. She retired from American Enka in 1969 and was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Canton. She was a life member of Central United Methodist Church Women’s Auxiliary and was in the choir for many years. She was a former volunteer at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert V. Shepard. Surviving are her husband of more than 60 years, Frank J. Clontz; one son, Robert J. Clontz and his wife, Genni, of Canton; and two grandchildren. Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. The Rev. Carrol Lindsey officiated. Burial was in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family was at the home, 78 Wesley St., Canton. In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Frankie Huffman

Frankie Huffman, 34, of Riverbend Street, Waynesville, died Monday, Aug.4, 2003, at her home. A native of Hampton County, Virginia, she had lived in Haywood County since 1997. She was preceded in death by her mother, Frances Elizabeth Huffman; and a stepbrother, Bobby Edmonds. Surviving are her father, Robert A. Huffman of Dobson; one son, Karry Huffman of the home; a grandmother, Elizabeth Huffman of Hazelwood; two sisters, Zinna Walls of King and Robin Huffman of Newport News, Va.; one brother, Michael Huffman of Dobson; four stepbrothers, David and Ricky Edmonds, both of Sandy Ridge, and H.P. and Danny Edmonds, both of Hampton, Va.; and an aunt and caregiver, Sue Dobbins of Hazelwood. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Rocky Branch cemetery. The Rev. G. W. Jameson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. At other times, the family will be at the home of Elizabeth Huffman, 199 Belle Meade St., Waynesville.

Wilma J. Norman

CLYDE — Wilma Jones Norman, 58, of 401 Long Branch Road, Clyde, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Chancy C. and Flora Wines Jones Sr. She was preceded in death by a son, Mark Hannah. Surviving are one son, Tracy Hannah of Pfafftown; six sisters, Carra Lee Haney and Ruth Moore, both of Clyde, Betty Arrington, Barbara Tate and Nancy Jones, all of Waynesville, and Sarah Hicks of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Chancy C. “Bill” Jones Jr., and Marion V. Jones, both of Clyde; and three grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. The Rev. Dr. Virgil Holloway will officiate. Burial will follow at Finchers Chapel cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ronnie and Donnie Moore, Larry Tate, Jeffrey Caldwell, Jimmy Arrington, Eddie Mintz, Wayne and Kevin Messer. Diane H. Wehking

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Diane H. Wehking, 68, of St. Augustine, Fla., formerly of Maggie Valley, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003. A native and lifelong resident of St. Augustine, she was a 1953 graduate of St. Joseph Academy and member of the Cathedral-Basilica. Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Donald S. Wehking; her children and their families, Melissa Wehking, Beth and Tray Parks, all of St. Augustine, Steve and Laura Wehking of Maggie Valley, David and Maudie Wehking of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Tim and Jennifer Wehking of Royston, Ga.; one brother, Jimmy Hoey of Satsuma, Fla.; and eight grandchildren. Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cathedral-Basilica. The Rev. Terrance Morgan officiated. The family received friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral-Basilica. Prayers were at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the cathedral. Charlie B. Cogdill

SYLVA — Charlie Baxter Cogdill, 97, of Crawford cemetery Road, Sylva, died Thursday, July 31, 2003 at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late John B. and Martha Williams Cogdill. He retired from Mead Corp. in the maintenance department . He was a member of Balsam Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dollie Queen Cogdill; three daughters, Mozelle Cogdill, Janie Norman, Divola Nicholson; and two sons, Charles and Jerald Cogdill. Surviving are two daughters, Dixie Crawford and Joyce David, both of Sylva; two sons and their wives, Willard and Mary Evelyn Cogdill of Waynesville and Lanny and Gayle Cogdill of Sylva; 24 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home of Sylva. The Rev. Hardin Nicholson officiated. Burial was held in Addie cemetery. Edna S. Bryson

SYLVA — Edna Mae Seay Bryson, 76, of Old Settlement Road, Sylva, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003. A native of Swain County, she had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She retired from Buster Brown Co. in 1992. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Roy Bryson. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Sheena and Gerald Holland of Clyde and Brenda and Joe Phipps of Brevard; one son and his wife, Ronnie and Barbara Bryson of Sylva; one sister, Mrs. Hardin Nicholson of Sylva; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church, of which she was a charter member. The Revs. Mike Moore, Hardin Nicholson and Matthew Queen officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Thelma P. Biddex

Thelma Pressley Biddex, 66, of Haywood County, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003 at the Brian Center in Waynesville. A lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late William Taft and Cora Belle Henson Pressley. She was a member of Center Pigeon Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Biddex; one daughter, Susan Reece; one son, Roger Crowe; one granddaughter and one great-grandson. Surviving are one daughter, Deborah Fish of Clyde; one brother, Wayne Pressley of Canton; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held from 6 to 8 Wednesday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Rev. R.G. Garland will officiate. At other times, the family will be at the home of her brother, 419 Smokey Cove Road, Canton.

Bertie C. Moody

GLENVILLE — Bertie Childress Moody, 99, of Glenville, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in Highlands Nursing Center. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Childress. She was a charter member of the Eastern Star Lodge. She attended Pine Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hyatt Moody; a daughter, Patsy Pressley; and a grandson, Joe Deane Norman. Surviving are six daughters, Bessie Lee Pressley and her husband, James, of Franklin, Betty Joe Norman of Waynesville, Jeane Stewart of Brevard, Jackie Rathbone and her husband, Ralph, of Hiawassee, Ga., Peggie Deane Hooper and her husband, Wendell, of Glenville and Karene Passmore and her husband, Arnold, of Hendersonville; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home in Sylva. The Revs. Johnny Norris, Ray Lewis and Tommy Owen will officiate. Burial will be in Hamburg Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Viola F. McDaniel

Viola Franklin McDaniel, 90, formerly of N. Welch Street, Waynesville, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Mige and Vinnie Coward Franklin. She retired from Wellco in 1970. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Edward McDaniel, who died in 1957; a son, David Lawrence McDaniel; and two daughters, Mary Ann McDaniel and Betty Vellano. Surviving are three daughters, Jackie Browning of Raleigh, Sharon Rathbone of Clyde and, Joan Greenman of Columbia, S.C.; one son, Charles E. McDaniel of Waynesville; two sisters, Katherine McFalls and Jane Wood, both of Waynesville; one brother, Lawrence Wood of Waynesville; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. The Rev.DeWayne Rathbone officiated.

Jessie Fouts

CANDLER — Jessie Fouts, 82, of Candler, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Moses Fouts and florence Brooks Fouts. He was a World War II veteran, having served more than five years in the 129th Army Air Force Base Unit, part of which was in Europe. Decorations and citations were Eamet Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, American Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He had been an active member of Balsam Grove Baptist Church in Jackson County for many years and had attended other churches in Buncombe County. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Fouts; a sister, Gladys Fouts Heines; foster parents, William “Coot” and Ora Hooper Wood Jones; stepmother, Lola Luther Fouts; half brother, R.L. Fouts; and his first wife, Minnie Mae Morgan Fouts. Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Sue Kilby Fouts; one daughter, Joyce Fouts Jones and her husband, Clinton, of Asheville; two sons, Jessie Lonnel “Sonny” Fouts and his wife, Janice, and George R. Fouts and his wife, Pat, all of Anderson; five half-sisters, Mozell Fouts Miller of Boone, Nina Fouts Peek and Ruby Fouts Thompson, both of Ronggold, Va., Flora Fouts Turner of Spartanburg County, S.C., and Lenora Fouts Wood of Abilene, Texas; three grandsons; two step-grandsons; and three step-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. The Revs. Jack W. Collins and Butch Stillwell will officiate. Entombment will be at Forest Lawn Mausoleum in Enka. Pallbearers will be Kevin Burrell, Shannon Fouts, Casey Fouts, Kevin Jones, Calvin Kilby and Donny Parris. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Clifford Bryson

WHITE PINE, Tenn. — Clifford Bryson, 74, of White Pine, Tenn., died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital. He was the son of the late Clyde and Isabella Bryson. He was a member of Leadvale Baptist Church. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in Italy. He was the owner and operator of Bryson Well Drilling for 40 years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hoyle Singleton. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Tilda Putnam Bryson; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Pero; one sister Ruby Bryson Nelson of Waynesville; two brothers, Lester and William Bryson of Canton; and one grandson; Services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Leadvale Baptist Church. The Rev. Charlie Harkleroad and Charles Robinson will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Farrar Funeral Home in White Pine. Georgia R. Wright

ASHEVILLE — Georgia Lee Robinson Wright, 89, of Asheville, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Alvertis Vert and Martha Lena Gaddy Robinson. She was a nurse’s aide at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System before retiring. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church in Asheville. Surviving are one daughter, Glenna Stephenson of Asheville; two sisters, Rosie Reynolds and Vangie Wheeler, both of Candler; one brother, Jack Robinson of Asheville; and one grandson. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. The Rev. Dennis Thurman will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the services.

Jared L. Hardin

CANTON — Jared Lynn Hardin, 20, of 494 Wilson Cove Road, Canton, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003. Surviving are his mother, Lisa Riddle; and one brother, Jason Hardin. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at his home. Wells Funeral Home of Canton was in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie Pitts

Johnnie Warren Pitts, 81, of Harris Street, Waynesville, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Nannie Rutherford Warren. Surviving are her husband of 60 years, William “Bill” Pitts; one son, Gerald Pitts and his wife, Vivian, of Waynesville; one brother, Jackie Ray Warren of Candler; and two grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. The Revs. Don Letzring and Tony McCall will officiate. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Anthony McCall, Mike Byrd, John and Melvin Allen and Brandon and Brian Burnette. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

J. Fred Wright

WEAVERVILLE — J. Fred Wright, 100, of 180 Stoney Knob Road, Weaverville, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003. A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Rachel Ford Wright and Pinkney Wright. He was a carpenter and he served as supervisor for many years for Merchants Construction Co. until his retirement in 1966. A member of the N.C. State Centurion Club, he was recently cited by Gov. Easley for his contribution to society for the past 100 years. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters; and four children, James Everette, Billy Van and Mary Jo Wright and Nancy Wright Atkins. Surviving are his wife of almost 82 years, Susie Buckner Wright; two daughters, Kathleen Landon and her husband, Milton, and Jane Roberts and her husband, Benny; two sons, Leo Wright and his wife, Elva, and Jerry Wright and his wife, Brenda; and two brothers, Claude Wright of Asheville and Roy Wright of Canton; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. The Revs. Ebb Jenkins, Frank Hopkins and Jim McCoy officiated. Burial was in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. Grandsons served as pallbearers. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family was at the home.

Lucille Mitchell

Lucille Mitchell, 78, formerly of Frazier Street, Waynesville, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003 at Britthaven of Clyde. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late James and Cumi Curtis Mitchell. She attended Calvary Road Church and Barberville Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mattie Kay Mitchell, Grace Sisk and Lucy McElroy; and two brothers, Norman and James Herman Mitchell. Surviving are one daughter, Betty Ann Rich of Waynesville; two sons, James “Peanut” Mitchell and his wife, Rhonda, and Robert Lee Mitchell, both of Waynesville; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. No services are planned. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, Mountain Region Office, 31 College Place, Suite D320, Asheville, NC 28801-2644. Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel G. Carson

ROSEVILLE, Mich. — Hazel Carson, 92, of Roseville, Mich., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in Canton. She was the daughter of the late Ada and Ralph McMinn. She was a licensed nurse and was employed for 22 years by the city of Roseville Court and Water Department. She was the first woman to solo a plane at the Detroit City Airport. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Carson, who died in 1946. Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Keeran of Waynesville; two brothers, Donald and William McMinn; three grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

Helena H. Allen

Helena Hyatt Allen, 87, of Waynesville, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Rufus Bedford and May Rogers Hyatt. She was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucius “Tud” Allen; one brother, Allen Hyatt; and two sisters, Ina H. Frady and Jincie H. Ferguson. Surviving are one son, Rufus C. Allen of Asheville; two daughters, Tyree A. Robinson of Charlotte and Linda A. Hyatt of Waynesville; one brother, Alna Hyatt of Waynesville; three sisters, Bernice H. Carter of Mars Hill, Georgia H. Williams of Elmer, N.J., and Flora H. Glavich of Waynesville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Allens Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Eddie Deitz officiated. Burial was in Greenhill cemetery. Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. At other times, the family was at the home at 888 Allens Creek Road. Evelyn J. Mullen

HENDERSONVILLE — Evelyn J. Mullen, 85, of Hendersonville, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Pine Park Retirement Home. A native of St. Louis, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Harry E. Stock and Anna Fink Stock. She attended business college in St. Louis and worked as a secretary before retiring. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph W. Mullen. Surviving are one daughter, Anne Lough and her husband, Robert, of Clyde; two sons, Robert F. Mullen and his wife, Mary, of Edinburgh, Scotland, and John W. Mullen and his wife, Johnnye, of Red Wing, Colo.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to World Harvest Mission, 100 West Ave. W960, Jenkintown, PA 19046-2697l or Four Seasons Hospice, 1825 Asheville Hwy., Hendersonville, NC 28791. CLYDE — Eva Conner Davis, 83, of Hospital Drive, Clyde, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.

Paul F. Reed

CANTON — Paul Fairis Reed, 88, of 125 Osborne Farm Road, Canton, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. He was a native of Pulaski County, Ga., and lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was a son of the late Robert Franklin and Texanna Aderhold Reed. He was employed by Greene Motor Sales in Canton and later retired from Anderson Chevrolet. He was a member of Crestview Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theatre. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Pearly Knight, Bertha Mathews, Alta Reed, Nola Ledford and Vernie Reed; and six brothers, James, Russ, Ralph, Trav, Buster and Haldee Reed. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Blanche Greene Reed; one daughter, Sharon Gail Bryson and her husband, Roy, of Canton; one son, Michael Neal Greene and his wife, Deanna, of Waynesville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Crestview Baptist Church. The Rev. Jerry Ensley will officiate. Burial will follow in Bon-A-Venture cemetery on Old Clyde Road. Honorary pallbearers will be the senior adult men’s Sunday school class. The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home. Robert L. Cope Jr.

ELYRIA, Ohio — Robert L. Cope Jr., 83, of Elyria, Ohio, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Life Care Center of Elyria. A native of Haywood County, he moved to Elyria in 1945. He was employed by Ford Motor Co. in Lorain, Ohio, as an electrician and supervisor for 17 years, retiring in 1987. He served as a deacon for 15 years in Elyria Baptist Church. He graduated from Waynesville Township High School and attended DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II and member of 30th Infantry Division Association in Old Hickory, N.C. Division, D-Day Plus 50 years. He went to Normandy to receive the Commemoration Medal of the Jubilee of Liberty which honored those who took part in the invasion that began the liberation of Europe, life member of VFW Post 1079 and UAW Local 425. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Ann Cope; three brothers, Ray, Joe and Ralph Cope; two sisters, Willie May Bean and Anna Kathryn Sutton. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Ruby V. Cope; three daughters, Carolyn Sullivan of Naperville, Ill., Mary Jane Edgar of North Ridgeville and Barbara Sue Yost of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three sons, Robert III of Midland Park, N.J., Richard A. of Elyria and Timothy James of North Ridgeville; 20 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Elyria Baptist Church in Elyria. The Rev. Jim Gordon will officiate. Burial will be in the Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon, Ohio, with full military honors provided by the VFW Post 1079. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home in Elyria.
